Re: The Descendants
While watching the film time went by without me being aware of it passing. When the end came I was surprised (in a good way) that the movie was over. AP did a great job of showing his audience Hawaii lifestyle from the locals point of view, I've lived there, not Honolulu, but on the big island of Hawaii. But I have vacationed on both islands shown in the film. The cast was well chosen, IMO those daughters could of been George's. Funny through out the movie I caught myself trying to picture the actress as George's wife and I couldn't accept it in my mind. When we left the theater we kept talking about how the film had been blown up, and although really good, didn't live up to all the hype. The next evening as soon as I saw my daughter we both said(at the same time) haven't been able to stop thinking about TD, it was soooo good, want to see it again!

Re: The Descendants
No risk of forgetting her lines ...
January 6, 2012
... but to not move a muscle during that kiss was a performance deserving of maybe not an Oscar but certainly an end credit, writes Susan Wloszczyna.
Patricia Hastie's career highlights have consisted of a small role on TV's Lost that was lost in editing and stand-in duty for Cate Blanchett in the 2008 film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Until now. In The Descendants, which is on the shortlist of potential Oscar best-picture candidates, she plays the wife of Matt King (George Clooney). He even plants a tender kiss on her lips.
Too bad she can't return the favour. Her brain-injured character is in a coma. Although she has numerous scenes as the catalyst behind most of the action, Hastie didn't have to learn a single line of dialogue. Instead, she has a motionless, silent presence. Still, Clooney describes her performance as ''spectacular''.
''Poor George,'' she says. ''There were three stages of coma make-up and I was in the second stage the day I met him.''
Hastie couldn't fully appreciate the sign of affection the first time she saw the film. ''I was looking at myself to see if I flinched,'' she recalls. But by the third time, she could concentrate on the movie. ''I was so teary-eyed. George is phenomenal and I was humbled to be a small part of that.''
Save for her joyride on a powerboat that opens the film, Hastie as Elizabeth King is seen lying in a hospital bed with eyes closed, a fading shell of her former self.
But the audience gets a keen sense of what kind of woman she was - especially when it is revealed early on that she had been unfaithful to her husband - by what the other characters say about her. ''Elizabeth was bigger than life,'' Hastie says. ''She lived it to the fullest. But she wasn't always a good girl.''
Director Alexander Payne, who hired the Honolulu resident in Hawaii, where the movie is set, says: ''We needed someone who could have been the halfway point between George Clooney and Shailene Woodley [who plays the couple's older teen daughter] … I told her, 'I need you to be very dedicated to this part. Will you lose weight?'''
A five-kilogram weight loss was just the start of her devotion. ''She would stay up all night and then come into work the next day,'' Payne says. ''After going through hair and make-up, she would get into bed. She said, 'Don't even tell me when you are shooting. Don't make a clapper noise. Just let me lie here.'''
A single ear plug allowed her to distance herself from the activity around her while still being able to hear Payne's directions. Melatonin made her too sleepy - no REMs (rapid eye movements) allowed. So she switched to a calming beverage from a health-food store.
Hastie, 50, also did research on coma patients: ''I read every book I could get my hands on and watched every documentary.'' One detail she used: those who suffer a blow to the head curl their hands in.
A month before filming began, she started skipping hair and nail appointments. ''I'm a jeans gal. Having a reason not to do all that was great.''
Her reward for her efforts? A promotion. ''Technically, her status is as a featured extra,'' Payne says, ''but she now has an end credit on the film.''
The Descendants opens in Sydney on January 12.

Re: The Descendants
Some interesting info for anyone who wants to know about the technical side of things:
From Hollywood reporter
Fox Searchlight Highlights Cinematography, Editing of 'The Descendants' (Exclusive Video)
THR debuts footage that the studio plans to employ as part of its effort to nab the Oscar hopeful tech noms that the vast majority of best pic winners have scored.
10:32 PM PST 1/11/2012 by Scott Feinberg
Over the past 15 years, Fox Searchlight has proven to be as savvy as any studio at navigating the often-murky waters of the awards season. Therefore, I am quite confident that its awards team knows exactly how few films have won the best picture Oscar without first scoring nominations for best cinematography (just 30 in the 84 years in which the category has been presented, and none since The Departed five years ago) and/or best film editing (just 9 in the 77 years in which the category has been presented, and none since Ordinary People 31 years ago), and that it is precisely for that reason that it is fighting very hard to win the support of the Academy's cinematography branch (201 members) and film editing branch (220 members) for The Descendants, their 2011 best picture Oscar hopeful. Their most recent move? Piecing together a special featurette entitled "Piecing and Editing The Descendants,' which we are exclusively premiering here today.
At the moment, at least, The Descendants is not a sure-thing for either category, however worthy it may be.
The film's cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, who previously collaborated with Payne on Sideways (2004) and who also lensed George Clooney's other 2011 film The Ides of March, was not nominated last month by the Broadcast Film Critics Association or this week by the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), the cinematographers' guild. The ASC snub particularly stings, since the group has perfectly predicted the best cinematography Oscar nominees and winner two out of the last three years, and had previously nominated Papamichael twice in the 1990s for TV work.
Meanwhile, the film's editor Kevin Tent, who has spliced all five of the feature films that Payne has directed (dating back to Citizen Ruth in 1996), provides an interesting case study: snubbed by the BFCA last month, he is awaiting the verdict of the American Cinema Editors (ACE), the film editors' guild, which will announce their nominations next Monday -- but even if they do nominate him, he will probably find it hard to rest easy about landing an Oscar nomination eight days later, since ACE previously nominated him for Election (1999), About Schmidt (2002), and Sideways (2004), but, bizarrely, the Academy then declined to nominate all three.
If The Descendants is going to have any shot of surpassing the presumptive frontrunner The Artist and winning the best picture Oscar, it will, in all likelihood, need at least one of these two artisans to score an Oscar nod -- and, if we're being realistic, probably both. And if you needed a good reason to study the below-the-line categories on Oscar nominations morning, that is it.

Re: The Descendants
From MSN today, discussing Oscar nominations.
Jonathan Crocker, MSN Movies contributor - George Clooney (The Descendents)
He was knocked out by heavy-hitters Daniel Day-Lewis and Jeff Bridges in his first two Best Actor noms, but this looks like George Clooney's best shot. His painfully sad performance in The Descendents has had audiences blubbing like children. And, as if to make damn certain, he's also terrific (on both sides of the camera) in The Ides Of March. Shoe-in?
Anna Smith, MSN Movies contributor - George Clooney (The Descendants)
The Descendants isn't my favourite Clooney performance but it's a very moving film and ticks a lot of awards boxes. There may well be a feeling that it's George's time to nab a leading gong rather than the supporting one he gained for Syriana in 2005.
Ed Holden, MSN Movies editor - George Clooney (The Descendants)
It's extremely tempting to disagree with the two scribes above and opt for Michael Fassbender for Shame (Fassbender has had an incredible year and dominates every frame he appears in) or Brad Pitt, who recently picked up a 'contribution to cinema' award at the Palm Springs Film Festival thanks to Moneyball and Tree Of Life. There's a sense of 'his turn' with both Brad and George. But the two previous nominations will swing voters into Clooney's corner.

Re: The Descendants
I saw it again, and it really is an amazingly understated movie and performance. I just find the whole movie moving and real. I honestly forgot I was watching George. He really did seem like a man overcome with his circumstance but pushing through.
If you haven't seen Moneyball, Brad Pitts performance is similarly understated and good, not as good, but could be the topic. Still I wonder if George might not get the Oscar to Jean DuJardain of The Artist. A lot of buzz and it is so unique to do a silent film in 2011. Then I read that some movie goers in Britain are asking for their money back from the Artist because it doesn't have any dialogue. Tell me that isn't funny.
