finally saw it ! enjoyed all the cast, who did pretty good balancing the drama with more ackward moments.
I'm a pretty biased critic since I enjoyed everyhing Payne has done so far.
plus, the only good thing we have in getting movies later on the other side of the ocean is that i even had the time to read the book before. Both are excellent.

The PR for the UK is gearing up for next week's release:

From hey u guys

George Clooney Is All Smiles In New Poster For The Descendants

January 23, 2012 By Kenji Lloyd

Hotly tipped to go to the Oscars next month, we’ve got only a few days left before Alexander Payne’s The Descendants comes to cinemas here in the UK. We got the first trailer for the film back in May last year, and it’s been something to look forward to ever since.

The beautiful first poster arrived a few days before the trailer, and we’ve now got a new poster to share with you, via IMP Awards, with George Clooney front and centre, and his character’s two daughters, playing by Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller, off in the background.

“Synopsis: From Alexander Payne, the creator of the Oscar-winning SIDEWAYS, set in Hawaii, THE DESCENDANTS is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic journey for Matt King (George Clooney) an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family’s land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries.”

With a script co-written by Payne, Nat Faxon, and Jim Rash, adapted from the novel of the same name by Kaui Hart Hemmings, the film is led by George Clooney, in what many are calling a career-best performance, and also stars Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, and Robert Forster, as well as Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, and Nick Krause in the younger roles.

The film took two awards at the Golden Globes last weekend, winning Best Motion Picture and Best Actor for Clooney in the Drama categories, as well as a slew of other wins and nominations in dozens of other awards ceremonies. Along with Clooney and Payne, the young Woodley has also been receiving tremendous acclaim for her performance, earning a nomination at the Golden Globes and a number of wins in several other awards for Best Supporting Actress, which is quite rare for someone only recently turned 20.

America was lucky enough to get this on 9th December last year, and we’ll be getting it now on 27th January, this Friday, which can’t come fast enough for me. Having done so well as the Golden Globes as well earning dozens of other accolades, it will also be really interesting to see how well the film does at the Academy Awards next month. The nominations are announced at around lunchtime tomorrow, so we’ll know exactly what it will be competing for then. Until then, here’s the new poster to enjoy.

There does seem to be a lack of coverage this time around. I've only seen 1 bus stop advert, nothing on bill-boards or the buses themselves. When Ides was out it was wall to wall, so I assume, just because George is in it, it will get the same attention as The American, but not as much as if were his own film. Great shame, I think it should all have equal publicity, but then maybe because of Alexander, he doesn't need it??? Errrr

I was talking to my girlfriend on the phone last night and yes, because of the Descendents movie she became a George fan. Anyway she said that if George wins the oscar that they'll show the Descendents in the movies again and won't release the DVD. I pointed out that IOM is already out on DVD and she said that's because it didn't win an award. Has anyone else heard this?

CindiGirl, I don't even pretend to know how Hollyweird works, but that doesn't totally make sense to me. The Descendants still hasn't come out in wide release, and that may happen now since it and he are nominated. I believe that ALL films are eventually released on DVD. I think that they have a schedule from release date for the film and then release date for the DVD. Sometimes the time frame is exceptionally short. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

The Descendants - Page 13 Empty Re: The Descendants

Post by Merlin Sat 28 Jan 2012, 07:50

Who should play Matt King in The Descendants? Without hesitation I said George Clooney
I'm asked all the time 'Did you ever in a million years think George Clooney would star in the movie based on your book?'

Kaui Hart Hemmings
guardian.co.uk, Friday 27 January 2012 22.55 GMT

It's a question I get asked all the time. In fact I know when it's coming. I see it on people's faces, this manic glimmer: "Did you ever in a million years think George Clooney would star in the movie based on your book? Isn't it amazing!! You must be so excited!!"

I have my canned answers: "It's amazing," "I am thrilled," "I am excited."

I also get asked what was it like working with him, being in the same room with him. Their need for a juicy, ground-breaking tidbit is just too much and often I will deadpan: "It was very intimidating, but I kept reminding him I'm just a normal person."

The thing is, it is amazing and I am excited (though less so the more I'm required to act it out), but when it comes down to it, and I know this may not come off right – I couldn't imagine it otherwise. I couldn't imagine another actor playing this role. The director (Alexander Payne) asked who I saw playing the role of Matt King in The Descendants. Without hesitation I said George Clooney. The novel is set in Hawaii, about a man of mixed lineage (Hawaiian and Caucasian). George looked the part, he was the right age. He looks similar to a lot of people here, athletic types who frequent the Outrigger Canoe Club and have similar backgrounds to the character he plays. It made sense at that level. Also, I thought he'd be great at a part that required some unraveling, some dishevelment. This role was very real, very unheroic. There's no Clooney in King. The other reason, an important one, is that the book is just as funny as it is emotional. I thought of him as a talented comedic actor so he just made sense.

A few weeks after my suggestion Alexander had met with George in Toronto. Alexander emailed: "We got your man." Done. So when asked, "Would I ever think …" I guess my answer is: yes. Knowing Alexander and the films he has made, you'd be a fool to say no and Clooney's no fool. I highly doubt my book spoke to him or the role. Alexander spoke to him, and I'm grateful because to me, this is the best performance of his career (am I allowed to say that?) and I had the privilege of seeing him at work.

There's a scene where King tells a large gathering of friends about his wife's impending death. I watched him do this scene over and over, each time moved by his performance and his ability to express a variety of emotions – grief, pain, vulnerability, utter fatigue and disconnection, yet in the controlled way of his character. It was such a skillful performance because while it stirred up your emotions, it avoided sentimentality. It was the way a man like this would cry in public. The background extras (who included my mother, who had no problem sobbing) were stunned. We were watching an actor act and it was breathtaking. When the scene ended, George said: "Oh don't cry, I'll get a new wife."

What was it like to have Clooney star in the film of my first book? It was always fun, and it was a chance to see an actor acting as opposed to reading about them in magazines or seeing them on awards shows. It was a very cool front-row seat.

I had a scene with George, a quick one where I play his secretary. I had one line. I can now say I was in a Clooney movie and since I was standing across from him I can say that I played opposite George. Here's what's funny: I didn't expect to feel like an equal. He treats everyone as an equal, but it was more than that. The director asked me where King would go to lunch. I said he wouldn't. He's too busy, too frugal; he doesn't know how to go out, sit down, and enjoy himself. He would sit at his desk and eat a home-made or takeaway lunch. When I showed up on set for my scene there was George at his desk with the lunch. I had a part in that. George's costume included a Hawaiian shirt and deal-breaking khakis. He said he'd never get laid again. I had a part in that. All the things that he had to subject himself to traced back to my novel, which gave me this funny queen-like feeling, especially when I was on set just observing. Sometimes I'd think: my god, what am I making this man do?

One day during filming on Kauai, Clooney was standing on the beach wearing his surf shirt and board shorts. My six-year-old daughter was in the background as an extra, on the sand at Hanalei Bay, playing herself. They looked equally related to the place I call home. I was watching my life, my memory, a movie star and my book collide. It was flattering to be used this way. To see fact and fiction, my life and a movie merge so seamlessly. I got to see the pieces of The Descendants and now the film is complete. What is it like? It's a timeless gift. George Clooney's performance is timeless as well. He didn't just convey sadness and grief – he conveyed rage, hurt, love, remorse and my favourite: an awed confusion. We've all felt it – the awe for what can happen to us in this life – the good, the devastating, the magic of letting go.

The Descendants - Page 13 Empty Re: The Descendants

Thanks Merlin, great article.

Many people have said that George always plays the same role, or a variation of himself in each role. But I think that impression might be steered more by the public image he has created. Far fewer people have probably witnessed what it's like to be around him for longer periods of time, and have watched him work (like KHH above.) No one usually gets to see the transformation happen between what the actor is really like, before they step into the shoes of the character they're playing. The public only gets to see the 'after', not usually the 'before' (unless you wait for the DVD to come out months later and it includes the behind-the-scenes footage.) Maybe if people could see what the actor is like before filming (instead of relying on an over-blown public image), then watched the film, it would be easier for people to acknowledge that a transformation has taken place, and that somebody like George isn't just 'playing himself.' Does that make any sense? scratch

Oh wow, that was such a great article. It must have been amazing for Kaui to see George's transformation in progress. That description of him giving the speech was mind blowing.

Duffy, great insight. I loved the article and Kaui certainly dispells the thought that George "always plays himself".

YaaaaY, I saw The Descendants, finally and I liked it.
It's a really good movie but not the best picture of the year.
It's an awesome performance of George but not the best of his career.
Overall, I would give 8 out of 10.

I've been to see the film yesterday, which I have to say I was looking forward to. I was hoping for all the emotions, but not sure I got them all. George, fab as he is, was good, maybe not great, but in the crying scene, it was very touching. My only problem knowing that there were onions around to enduce his tears! As for an Oscar, hmmmmm, not sure. I hope he does as everyone has raved over the film, and if he's soon to change over to directing, maybe his last chance to get one. Having said that, George was good, typical funny, brow moving expressions, noted.

Loved the funny running scene, thought that Shailene should have got some recognition, also the "dude" who got thumped was entertaining!!

For those that didn't stay for the end credits, Waldo was incharge of "all" hair, Angel is still the assistant and surprisingly Gary Strong? was incharge of security for George.

Overall, a good film certainly to see again. But knowing the bits that we do, the red T shirt means it was his birthday that day, the goat on lawn (nuff said!), it made it more personal that we've "been" there too for him, so I do really hope you all manage to see it at least once to give bums on seats! cheers

The Descendants - Page 13 Empty Re: The Descendants

I've seen the film today and found it to be a lovely, slow, thoughtful film with George giving a very good performance.
He didn't make me cry, the two girls did.

They were both brilliant. Shailene was so understated in her portrayal of a rebellious teenager, at first so angry with her mother and then gradually becoming a more mature support to both her young sister and her father. I found that very moving and could feel her relief once she'd come clean about the reason she fell out with her mother.
Amara, as the 10 year old, was delightful and she too brought
tears in one scene.

Throughout the film the word "authentic" was in my mind and it was an authentic film in every way, even down to the grey days and misty weather in some lovely scenes.
The background music is lovely too.
The ending of the film made me want to know how they
all fared as a family.

I look forward to watching it again & again when the blu ray version is available because I thought every thing about the film was so well done.

BTW am I correct when I believe that when George mentioned "onions" he was joking ?
