An article from a funny law website in the UK. They had previously stated in another post I read awhile back that when news of George and Amal first emerged that her Chambers website had crash with people trying to log on to see who she was. The website got a quote from the people who named Amal "hottest barrister"!

Did legal blog YourBarristerBoyfriend bring human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin and film star together?

Few anticipated what was to follow when, in August last year, Doughty Street junior barrister Amal Alamuddin was named the "hottest woman barrister in London" by the hit blog YourBarristerBoyfriend.

Two months later, on 28 October, George Clooney was spotted out dining with a young barrister at Berners Tavern in central London. The identity of the legal rookie? None other than Alamuddin. Had George been reading YourBarristerBoyfriend, and then somehow cherry-picked the Oxford-educated human rights lawyer from the list, wondered conspiracy theorists?

On 18 February this year Alamuddin, 36, and Clooney, 52, were spotted together again at a private screening of the Hollywood star's latest film, The Monuments Men. The sighting came about after a guest at the event posted a photo on Instagram showing the pair together.

Last month, on 13 March, gossip about an Alamuddin-Clooney romance went into overdrive after the tabloids carried photos of them together in the Seychelles, where they apparently went after enjoying a safari in Tanzania.

Five days later the duo were papped leaving the Carlyle Hotel in New York.

And now, according to People magazine, Alamuddin and Clooney are getting married! Sources told the US gossip magazine that the couple celebrated their engagement on Wednesday evening at a dinner with friends in Los Angeles, with Alamuddin apparently sporting a "huge ring".

Responding to the news, YourBarristerBoyfriend's Sonia van Gilder Cooke told Legal Cheek:

"Naturally we assume that George has always been an avid reader of YourBarristerBoyfriend. We like to think that our Hottest Female Barristers list is to George Clooney what the Victoria's Secret catalogue is to Leonardo di Caprio.

"We personally select who goes on our lists, so it's good to have our intuitions about Amal's star quality confirmed.

"George and Amal's coupling heralds the end of the bimbo age — quality men don't just want arm candy anymore, they want women who are their equals (or betters) in looks, intelligence and accomplishments."

The man who vowed never ever to get married again has apparently become engaged. I say apparently because no one has actually heard from the man(George Clooney) or the woman themselves. Kneepads reported it first and they don't ever go out on a ledge so there must be some kind of basis for their reporting, but so far, that only basis is that Amal Alamuddin had a ring on her ring finger that looked a lot like an engagement ring. George generally stays quiet about everything unless it is a fight with Steve Wynn about Obama or if you say something he doesn't like about one of his cocktail waitresses.

As I told someone on Twitter this weekend, just because you get engaged doesn't mean you will get married. Clooney, who has gone through a series of women since his divorce to Talia Balsam way back in 1989 would be giving all that up. Is that something he wants to do? The next thing you know Amal will want kids and that will really throw George into a tailspin. Maybe he has decided he is too old to keep going with those year long contracts and wants to find someone who will be around to take care of him when he is senile.

Amal is certainly a good match for him. Brilliant. A lawyer. A liberal. Very good looking. Those all seem to be qualities that George would find attractive even if she can't take a drink order. As a lawyer though, she does share one important quality George loves. She charges by the hour.

But she made some good point. He did comment on the Wynn argument so obviously the questions those reporter ask now why is Wynn more important then his engagement? But I guess the statement is still coming just a bit laaattterr

I think it's because George generally only comments on news stories that misrepresent him badly or make someone else look bad. The engagement rumour does neither.

Where on earth does it say that this thread is a happy one and that people can only post happy stuff? The thread is about George and Amal getting engaged and while for some posters it's happy news, for others it's not.

I've never hidden the fact that this site covers all aspects of George Clooney (it's even written in the house rules!) and is open to all opinions so if people want to say nasty things about George, then we're not going to pretend they didn't.

I'm not saying "pretend they didn't say nasty stuff," you've misunderstood what I've said Katie.
I'm asking that those kind of cheap articles have their own thread, that's all.
No matter if you don't agree.

In my mind any news about a couple in love getting engaged to be wed is happy news.

The news of film star George Clooney’s engagement to London lawyer Amal Alamuddin has triggered a Mexican wave of despair across the Western World. For Clooney is that rare thing: the objectified male – admired by men and women alike, albeit women making up the more hysterical part. Men want to be him; women be with him, even if only for one night (and, in fact, some of the chaps feel rather similarly).

Clooney, just short of his 53rd birthday, is a bona fide star of the old-school variety, and a significant element of this appeal is his eternal bachelor status. Wed once in the dim and distant past to one Talia Balsam – a woman whose name sounds suspiciously as if he invented it based on his shampoo – he had subsequently declared himself to be not the marrying kind. And that’s just the way we, the slavering public, liked him. In being no one’s husband, he could be everybody’s favourite fantasy.

And so it came to pass that the Las Vegas outpost of Madame Tussaud’s boasted a “Marrying George Clooney” photo opportunity, in which visitors could don a wedding frock and stand next to a waxen statue of the actor clad in a tuxedo; a cult tourist attraction not merely for the girls.
For who among us remembered the original Gorgeous George (American wrestler George Wagner), after the advent of Le Clooney? It is something to do with that smile: an easy, open, self-effacing grin-plus-requisite-twinkle that makes man, woman and child alike think: “Oh, that’s all right, then.” Even those previously unaware of their status as Neoplatonists could understand that this beatific masculine pulchritude was somehow a reflection of all that was good in the universe.

As with so many an objectified female star, adulation also required a hairstyle. Clooney laboured for a good 15 years in a big-hair wilderness that carried him no nearer fame than a role in 1998’s Return of the Killer Tomatoes. It was a seminal new haircut that brought him his breakthrough part as Dr God’s Gift (technically: Doug Ross) in the Nineties sex and scrubs drama ER. A big-screen presence followed, in which he cornered the market in easy, open, self-effacing-grin-plus-requisite-twinkle type roles.

For an indisputably dashing chap, Clooney has maintained a pleasing lack of vanity, as anyone who witnessed his tubby, flip-flop running as the cuckolded hero in 2011’s acclaimed The Descendants can testify. A run-in with Bell’s Palsy as a teen, failed baseball career, two false starts at university, and the aforementioned pre-ER hair atrocity seem to have kept him grateful and grounded.

Meanwhile, his innate personality – itself not an attribute shared by many Hollywood denizens – would appear to be of the good egg variety. He is evidently in possession of a brain, a hinterland, is universally liked in addition to being adored. An altruist as he is an activist, Clooney is famously concerned: about voting, about the Democrat cause, about Darfur, Haiti, the Sudan. Given a wrong, he is keen to right it, even if it means getting banged up for his cause, as he was in 2012, when he was arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy for civil disobedience.

A stalwart champion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights, he will not “do a Jason Donovan” and deign to deny rumours about his own hotly and heavily debated sexuality. Instead, he has asserted: “The last thing you’ll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, 'These are lies!’ That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community. I’m not going to let anyone make it seem like being gay is a bad thing.” If he is closeted – this not only adds to his old school, leading-man appeal – it is a very contemporary kind of closet, door insouciantly ajar, details the business of no one.

Meanwhile, there is the ostensibly strenuous heterosexuality, closely documented by the world’s tabloids. Previous Clooney arm candy includes: British model Lisa Snowdon, former wrestler Stacy Keibler, cocktail waitress and “reality personality” Sarah Larson, Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis and Baywatch starlet Krista Allen. A friend of a friend, who received the benefit of his, ahem, attentions, rapturously recalls that it was the single most erotic night of her life.

And there Clooney transcendently hovers: the great 21st-century dashing / modest / concerned / gay / straight / bisexual / universal fantasy of all men and women, beaming bachelorishly, and thus forever availably, away in the global imagination. Until now. Worse, Ms Alamuddin seems just the kind of perfect woman who would ensnare such an elusive paragon: being bright first, beautiful second.
And, what a beauty – with a lavish, natural loveliness of the sort to make La-La Land’s plastic people only weep, were they able.

Fluent in French and Arabic, and now working out of London’s Doughty Street Chambers, she specialises in international law, human rights, extradition and crime. Previously, she served as an adviser to former UN Secretary general Kofi Annan, now special envoy to Syria, a subject close to her fiancé’s heart.

Alamuddin, 36, and once voted “hottest barrister in London”, issues from a family of prominent Lebanese intellectuals, who fled warring Beirut when she was a child to settle in Buckinghamshire. Her father is business academic Ramzi Alamuddin, her mother the celebrated journalist Baria Alamuddin, foreign editor of the Lebanese newspaper Al Hayat. After leaving St Hugh’s College, Oxford, where she gained a 2:1 in law, she studied at the New York University School of Law, before returning to Blighty where she is at once the very model of hard graft and a much sought-after party guest.

Earlier this year, a former colleague of Clooney’s informed People magazine: “He’s with someone who is a very accomplished attorney. She isn’t someone who is pursuing a career in acting or entertainment. She’s on his level.” Some might argue that she occupies a rather dizzier perch.

Regardless, without Gorgeous George, who will fulfil the necessary function of universal bachelor? Johnny Depp has proceeded straight from one long-term relationship into a hurtle toward marriage. Leonardo DiCaprio may be a “modeliser”, but he pursues these clothes horses in the listless and desultory fashion of a man defeated. Meanwhile, in the potential-to-be-lusted-after stakes, he has evolved straight from snivelling sub-aqua waif to he of giant jowls, with no intermediate period. And I cannot be the only individual to fail to distinguish between the various Ryans.

No, if I had to put my money on any bachelor carrying off the Clooney crown, it would be Cameron Diaz. At 41, the actress is acute of cheekbone, pert of pout, fit as a flea, not given to breeding or co-dependency of any sort, keen on men, yet open to the idea of being keen on women, witty, intelligent, socially engaged, widely liked, and clearly something of a gas.

Meanwhile, however much one wishes the happy couple well, one senses this may not be the end of the romantic road for The Cloon. After all, this is a man adept at fantasy, narrative, at keeping balls forever circling in the air. And, reader, I assure you, this is not merely wishful thinking.

I would be furious if a business colleague or associate passed public comment on something that was said to them in private.  There has been no official comment/announcement from the couple.

Doughty Street Chambers chose to be the first to "jump-in", how terribly unprofessional.

Smacks of self promotion....Noughty Doughty.

They certainly would not have done it without authorisation from everybody concerned - they're lawyers. Clever move............

We don't know that it was said in private. I don't think it was such a big secret she was showing off the ring in a couple of restaurants . I think after the attorneys were allowed to speak Nick and Nina were allowed to speak. George and Amal don't have to say anything it is now announced.

Eric Bolling Was Totally Kidding When He Called George Clooney Gay

George Clooney may have gotten engaged to girlfriend Amal Alamuddin over the weekend, but according to Fox’s The Five host Eric Bolling, the actor is “gay.” Bolling outed Clooney on the show Monday, telling “all the ladies out there who think he’s amazing” to admit to themselves that “he’s either gay or married,” adding, “get over it.”

The discussion continued unimpeded, but at the end of the segment, Bolling broke in to clarify that he was “kidding” about Clooney being gay.

And if that wasn’t enough, when the show returned from commercial, he did it again. “I have to clarify the clarification,” Bolling said. “I was kidding about the George Clooney thing.”

We are awaiting clarification numbers three and four on Twitter and Facebook shortly.

This pretty much proves it: No one, anywhere, wants to tick off George Clooney.
Fox News' Eric Bolling made a crack while discussing the Oscar winner's engagement during The Five today, and then insisted a couple times over by the end of the segment that he did not mean it.
So, what did he say?
"Find someone who makes you laugh and you'll have a great life...It's clear, though. George Clooney's gay," Bollins said, pretty randomly, while on the topic of what goes into making a happy marriage. Even his four cohosts seemed startled and there was an audible gasp from one of them.

"Now, he watches the show," Bolling continued, holding out a wait-a-sec hand as if he was sharing some sort of inside joke between himself and Clooney.
"Let me explain. For all the ladies out there who think he's amazing, just admit it. He's either gay or he's married, just get over it. Move on, there's got to be somebody else."
So Bolling was trying to make a joke about how Clooney can't be perfect in every way as so many of his fans would happily argue, so being either gay or taken by another woman would be the fly in the ointment for all the ladies who love him.
But the resounding thud you hear is the result of his ill-advised attempt at wink-wink celebrity-crush humor.
The conversation carried on for another 40 seconds or so before Bolling broke in to add, "Wait, wait: They want me to make sure I point out that I was kidding about Clooney—get it? He's either gay or married, so he's off the market, so stop dreaming about George Clooney? That was the point."
"They" presumably being those who don't want Fox News getting sued.
And again, at the end of the segment, after they had moved on to another topic, Bolling reiterated: "I have to do this again, I have to clarify the clarification. I was kidding about the George Clooney thing. He's married—he's off the market," he quickly corrected himself as a nod to the fact that Clooney isn't married, either.
"That's all, that's all I've got to say," he laughed, holding up his hands in mock-surrender. (Thanks to Mediaite for clipping the whole thing.)
But Clooney has never been one to get up in arms over idle commentary. In fact, he handles rumors with the same humor and class he handles pretty much everything else.
He told Esquire U.K. just last year, when asked about rumors of him being gay, "[A headline read] 'George Clooney's Gay-Gay-Gay.' And I said, 'I'm gay-gay. The third one's pushing it.'"
And to The Advocate in 2012, he said about the persistent chatter, "I think it's funny, but the last thing you'll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, 'These are lies!' That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community.
"I'm not going to let anyone make it seem like being gay is a bad thing. My private life is private, and I'm very happy in it. Who does it hurt if someone thinks I'm gay? I'll be long dead and there will still be people who say I was gay. I don't give a s--t."
