'Gravity' to Kick Off Mexico's Morelia Film Fest

Alfonso Cuaron's film joins one of the fest's strongest lineups ever.

Gravity had its world premiere at the Venice Film Vestival last week with stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in attendance. It received rave reviews and after another highly praised screening at Telluride, it has emerged as a favorite to land Oscar nominations in multiple categories, including a possible best picture nod.

The Warner Bros. release will also bow at the Toronto Film Festival before making its way down south to Mexico.
The premiere at Morelia, a top-tier Mexican film fest, is a homecoming of sorts for Mexican director Cuaron (Children of Men), who co-wrote Gravity with his son, Jonas.

As for Morelia's official selection, the lineup for the upcoming 11th edition is one of its strongest ever, as it includes the latest films from several new generation directors who have fared well at Cannes or Berlin over the years. Among the much-anticipated screenings in the Mexican features competition are Fernando Eimbcke's Club Sandwich, Michael Rowe's Manto Acuifero, Michel Franco's A Los Ojos and Diego Quemada-Diez's La Jaula de Oro.

Up-and-comers Jose Luis Valle, Mariana Chenillo and Aaron Fernandez will also be presenting their new works.
Morelia runs from Oct. 18-27. In addition to Cuaron, Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky will be on hand as guest of honor.
