EXCLUSIVE: The movie version of “August: Osage County” already has a heavyweight pedigree in Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep, who are playing the two lead roles in the adaptation of the Broadway drama.

Now the film’s credits are getting even glitzier. George Clooney has joined the movie as a producer, according to a person familiar with the project who was not authorized to talk about it publicly.

Clooney and producing partner Grant Heslov will produce the film, which is being directed by John Wells and financed and distributed by The Weinstein Co. The A-list actor-filmmaker, who has a relationship with Wells dating back to their “ER" days, will be heavily involved offering creative input. He is not expected to star.

A Weinstein Co. representative was not immediately available for comment.

The movie -- which is also being produced by Harvey Weinstein, Steve Traxler and initial Broadway producer Jean Doumanian -- is set to begin shooting in the fall for a potential 2013 release.

Tracy Letts’ black comedy about a few weeks in the lives of a dysfunctional Oklahoma family centers on Violet Weston (Streep), a drug-addled matriarch who doles out barbs and truths, as well as a motley crew of family members, particularly oldest daughter Barbara (Roberts), a control-freak professor who finds her life falling apart. When it was first staged several years ago, it won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, a Tony and a Drama Desk award.

Deanna Dunagan and Amy Morton incarnated the Violet and Barbara roles, respectively, on both Broadway and the West End; Estelle Parsons and Shannon Cochran played the parts when the show came to Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre.

Letts is adapting his own play for the screen. The male actors have yet to be cast in the movie.

Clooney is making a habit of bringing serious plays to the big screen. Last year he was the driving creative force behind the film adaptation of Beau Willimon’s political stage drama “The Ides of March.”

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - George Clooney and Smoke House Pictures partner Grant Heslov will produce the film adaptation of "August: Osage County," the Pulitzer-Prize winning play by Tracy Letts.

Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep will star as mother and daughter in The Weinstein Company's upcoming film, which John Wells is directing from Letts' adaptation.

"It's already a great cast and great material and I can't think of anyone better than Harvey to put this all together," Clooney said in a statement. "And we're particularly excited to work with our dear friend John Wells. It's such a terrific group and we feel honored to help bring it to the screen."

The dark comedy, which chronicles the women of the Weston Family, made its Broadway debut in 2007 and went on to win a Tony Award for Best Play.

Clooney and Heslov are producers of the upcoming "Argo," Ben Affleck's latest film, and teamed up for last year's "The Ides of March," which they co-wrote and co-produced for Clooney to direct.

Small world. Weinstein who is the husband of the designer that Stacy wore to as number of the award shows and turned up to her catwalk show. I'm sure the wife wooing the current girlfriend and paying her to wear her designs to the Oscars was just a concidence. A not so subtle way to develop a current "working relationship through the "spouses/arm candy" and to open the door for discussion between G and Harvey about this project in particular and to provide funding if G signed onto the project.

What was the world before Wiki??

I know we all were hoping George would do the occaional film out of his production office that are a bit more women-centric and with greater diverse roles (with substance) for women instead of the limited role of the female as the girlfriend/wife/knocked up intern in his films but this sounds like a Bold and the Beautiful script on a dry reading. I can only hope that the play is written beautifully and filled with pathos along with dark humour which has not translated to the factual telling of the plot below.

Its Broadway debut was at the Imperial Theater on 4 December 2007 and transferred to the Music Box Theatre on 29 April 2008. The Broadway show closed on 28 June 2009 after 648 performances and 18 previews.

The show made its UK Debut at London's National Theatre in November 2008. A US national tour began on 24 July 2009, with its first performance at Denver's Buell Theatre.

Plot
The action takes place over the course of several weeks in August inside the three-story home of Beverly and Violet Weston outside Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The play is reminiscent of Dumas' well-made play "Camille," centering as it does on the waning days of a sharp-tongued addicted dying woman who is surrounded by a large cast of eccentric lazy hangers-on revealed as various love-hate relationships unfold. The similarity is emphasized by links between the names of the main characters, "Violet" in Letts' play and "Violetta" in "La Traviata" (the opera made from Dumas' "Camille"). However, at the end of Letts' play, the man is dead and the woman lingers on.

SPOILER ALERT

Prologue
The play opens with Beverly Weston, a once-famous poet, interviewing Johnna, a young Native American woman, for a position as live-in cook and caregiver for his wife Violet, who is being treated for mouth cancer. She is addicted to several different kinds of prescription drugs and exhibits paranoia and mood swings. Beverly, who freely admits that he is an alcoholic, lightly converses about Violet's current problems, most of which Beverly concedes are the result of personal demons too powerful to be cured by drugs. Violet enters the scene clearly affected by her drugs. After an incoherent and combative argument with Beverly, Violet returns upstairs. Beverly hires Johnna, lends her a book of TS Eliot's poetry and continues to drink.

Act One
Several weeks later. Beverly Weston has not been seen for five days. Several family members have gathered in the house to provide support for Violet including her daughter Ivy, her sister Mattie Fae and Mattie Fae's husband Charlie. When Violet is not making calls attempting to track down her husband or popping pills, she spends the time sniping at her family, particularly Ivy, whom she criticizes for her mode of dress and lack of a romantic life. The news comes that Beverly's boat is missing, ramping up the fears that he has committed suicide. Ivy's older sister Barbara arrives from Boulder, Colorado with her husband Bill and 14-year-old daughter Jean. Barbara has not visited her mother in several years, and has mixed feelings about returning to the house because of the confrontational nature of their relationship. They fall into an argument almost immediately, during which Violet accuses her of abandoning her family and breaking her father's heart.

Later in the evening, Jean bonds with Johnna after the older woman allows her to smoke some marijuana in her room. She confides to Johnna that her parents are separated and are attempting to hide the fact from the family. Bill and Barbara argue over the cause of their separation as they make a bed out of the fold-out sofa in the living room: Bill is sleeping with a much-younger woman, one of his students at the university where he teaches. At Five AM, the local sheriff, Deon Gilbeau (Barbara's high school boyfriend) rings the doorbell and breaks the news that Beverly has been found drowned. Barbara goes to identify the body as Violet comes downstairs in a drug-addled fog. The act ends with her spiraling into confusion.

Act Two
Several days later. The family has come from Beverly's funeral. Violet spends a quiet moment alone in Beverly's office, bitterly reproaching him for leaving her, and takes some more pills. Before the memorial dinner prepared for the family by Johnna, several family arguments and scenes arise. Ivy and Barbara's sister Karen has flown in from Florida with her new fiancé and can talk about nothing except her wedding plans, distressing Barbara. During an argument with her mother and Mattie Fae, Ivy unwittingly confesses that she is seeing someone romantically but refuses to say who. Mattie Fae and Charlie's son Little Charles has overslept and missed the funeral. His father is sympathetic but Mattie Fae is, as usual, rude to and critical of her son. Karen's fiancé Steve discovers that Jean is a pot-smoker and offers to share his stash with her, lewdly flirting with the teenaged girl. In a private moment, it is revealed that Ivy's lover is actually Little Charles, her first cousin.

Dinner is served, and Violet begins insulting and needling all of her family members. After inappropriately discussing Beverly's will at the table, she cruelly exposes Barbara and Bill's separation. When Barbara starts to fight back, Violet tauntingly reveals the full extent of her addiction, and the tensions develop into a violent confrontation, culminating in Barbara physically attacking her mother. After family members separate them, Barbara takes control of the situation, ordering that the family raid the house to discover all of Violet's hiding places for her pills.

Act Three
Several hours later things have calmed down, but the pain of the dinner confrontation has not gone away. Ivy reports that Violet's doctor thinks she has brain damage, and the three sisters share a drink in their father's study, discussing their mother. Ivy reveals that she and Little Charles are planning to run away to New York, and refuses to acknowledge the need for soemone to take care of Violet. She reveals that it was Violet, not Beverly, who was heartbroken when Barbara left Oklahoma. Violet enters, now more coherent and off her drugs but no less incorrigible, is resigned to dealing with her demise on her own terms. She discusses a depressing story from her childhood with her daughters. In a private moment, Barbara and Violet apologize to each other, but it is uncertain how long the peace will last.

Mattie Fae observes a tender moment between Little Charles and Ivy, and begins taunting him again when the ever-patient Charles finally loses his temper with his wife, berating her for her cruelty to her own son and promising her that unless she can find a way to be kind to Little Charles, he is going to leave her. The lecture is accidentally overheard by Barbara, who confirms when pressed that Little Charles and Ivy are lovers. She is shocked when Mattie Fae reveals that Little Charles is not Ivy's cousin but her half-brother, the result of a long-ago affair between Mattie Fae and Beverly. She refuses to tell Ivy or Little Charles the truth, leaving it up to Barbara, who knows that the news will destroy Ivy, to find a way to end the incestuous affair.

Late that night, Steve and Jean share a joint, and before long, Steve attempts to molest Jean. Johnna walks in on the scene and attacks Steve with a frying pan; the noise brings Jean's parents and Karen to the scene. An ugly argument follows when Jean defensively lashes out at her parents with hurtful comments about her father's affair, and Barbara slaps her. Karen leaves with Steve, choosing to lie to herself and mistakenly blaming Jean for what happened. Bill elects to return to Boulder with Jean and admits, when Barbara confronts him, that he is not going to come back to her. He leaves as Barbara tells him she loves him.

Two weeks pass. Barbara, now drinking heavily, offers Johnna a chance to quit and leave the toxic environment of the Weston house, but she chooses to stay. Sheriff Gilbeau drops by the house with the news that Beverly had stayed at a motel shortly before he committed suicide. He and Barbara nearly share a tender moment, but she is too emotionally exhausted and drunk to consummate it.

Several days later, Ivy has dinner with Barbara and Violet. Ivy attempts to tell her mother, over Barbara's objections, of her plans with Little Charles but Violet suddenly confesses that she already knows that Little Charles is Beverly's son. Ivy recoils in shock and horror, rebuffing Barbara's attempts to comfort her, she says that she will never tell him and leaves for New York anyway. Violet calmly reveals that she has deliberately destroyed Ivy and Charles' affair, which she knew of the entire time. Barbara and her mother have one last angry confrontation during which Violet blames Barbara for her father's suicide. Violet also reveals his suicide might have been preventable since she knew which motel he stayed in the night he left the house. Barbara, realizing that her Mother has slipped beyond her help, leaves the house. Violet breaks down and is left only with Johnna, who ends the play with a quotation from a T.S. Eliot poem: "This is the way the world ends, this is the way the world ends."

George and Harvey have known each other and been friends for years. I don't see why he would need to use Stacy to get to George.

I just think it makes things easier if the wheels have been greased - so to speak.

If this is "ready to go", as in actors already picked and signed, etc., then George and Harvey probably discussed this some time ago. Not that I don't agree Watching, about the greased wheels, I doubt that Stacy had any big role in the decision of putting this together.

Sounds like a great project...I agree that it looks like he has picked a great film to work on with a strong female cast. I hope he takes it to heart with Monuments....there is only one really pivotal female character that I could see so I hope he finds a great actress to do the part and make her a central part of it.

I do the exact same thing with everything I post; I use Control C to copy and Control V to paste. I do NOT know why sometimes the link copies, and other times I have problems. Andrea Riseborough is rumoured to be joining August: Osage County.

The rising British star, who starred in Madonna's WE and Brighton Rock, would share the screen with Hollywood heavyweights Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in John Wells' big-screen adaptation of Tracy Lett's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, reported the Daily Mail.

Meryl has been cast as pill-popping matriarch Violet Weston, while Julia is to play her eldest daughter Barbara.

Andrea, 30, is tipped to play youngest daughter Karen.

The film, which is being produced by George Clooney's Smokehouse Pictures, follows the women in the Weston family who are brought back together when their alcoholic father disappears.

Production is set to begin in September, with a 2013 release.

Andrea, who made her big-screen debut in 2010's Made In Dagenham, will next star in British drama Shadow Dancer with Clive Owen and Gillian Anderson, and British thriller Welcome To The Punch alongside James McAvoy and Mark Strong.

She has recently been filming sci-fi thriller Oblivion in Iceland with Tom Cruise.

Andrea Riseborough has been linked to the film adaptation of the Pulitzer-winning play August: Osage County.

Riseborough is said to be in negotiations to portray Meryl Streep's daughter Karen, reports the Daily Mail.

August: Osage County follows the Weston family, who are reunited when the alcoholic patriarch disappears and is subsequently found dead.

Streep and Julia Roberts were attached to the project for two years with George Clooney recently signing up as a producer, according to Vulture.

Roberts is tipped to play one of Streep's daughters in the movie.

Riseborough was previously seen in Madonna's W.E. in the main role as Wallis Simpson, and recently joined the cast of thriller Hidden.

Why is it a two step process?

You can right click on the URL in the address bar and paste it into your post.

You don't hit send, you just go back to the source (of course I'm assuming you have more than one internet window open) and then copy the text (highlight the text all the way to the end and then right click and select copy) and go back to your still open post a reply page and paste the text into the post. THEN you hit send (or preview if you want to check the like is working).

I'm assuming you have the option of having more than one internet page open at one time. On Firefox browser and newer Internet Explorer versions you can just click on the + sign next to the open window tab at the top of the page and then open up another window.

So doing a send and then edit wouldn't be necessary.

I appreciate that Lorna, but no, I have to do things the roundabout way. I don't have two windows open, so I do alot of back and forth. Remember, I'm computer illiterate!!!! And yes, I agree, your way would be MUCH easier...

And Juliette Lewis may be added to that list.

Based on Tracy Letts' play and directed by John Wells, the story centers on a dysfunctional Oklahoma-based family that's brought together by a family crisis. Meryl Streep has been cast to play the wife of the family patriarch, who goes missing. Chris Cooper is playing Streep's brother-in-law. Today Deadline reported that Juliette Lewis is in negotiations to join August: Osage County. If everything goes well, she'll play "the self-deluding youngest daughter" in the dark family comedy.

Better known for her film work (Natural Born Killers, Christmas Vacation), Lewis turned her talent toward the small screen recently with a supporting role in NBC's The Firm, a series based on the 1993 film (based on John Grisham's best-selling novel). The series was cancelled during its freshman run and Lewis has since been cast to star in The Days of Mary, a reimagining of Fellini's Nights of Cabiria. Streep has other projects she's working on. There is also a question if Julia Roberts has the acting chops for such a demanding role. Of course she is well known overseas; her movies have done better there than in the US.

Now, I haven't like all of Julia's movies, but who would question her "chops"? She's been very diverse and has shown quite brightly. It doesn't sound any more demanding than some of her other seriocomedic roles.

She was good in From Dusk til Dawn. She was also good in Cape Fear with Nick Nolte, playing a clueless teenager. I think she's pretty good friends with George.

Julia, CindiGirl, not Juliette. Unless Davida read her article wrong and they were talking about Juliette and she typed Julia.

Sorry, I should have made myself more clear, both Juliette and Julia were mentioned in the article. I did mean Juliette Lewis. Even years ago she was a good actress.

I just was paraphrasing an online source that said the project would be significantly delayed. It also questioned if Julia was the best possible choice for such an extremely demanding role, as she generally is known for lighter material. (Of course Julia did get an Academy Award and high praise for . . .) Still she is well-known abroad which makes a difference in who's cast. When I mentioned that G could advise Channing Tatum in the other thread, I was referring in part to the fact that G is very popular overseas. Channing would stay high on the A-list if he was as famous in Europe, Asia, South America, Russia, etc. International fame tends to be more important than talent in most casting decisions.

Julia Roberts would need to work around production for “The Normal Heart,” another prestige theater adaptation. The actress is set to star as Emma Brookner, the wheelchair user who became an AIDS activist, in Ryan Murphy’s film adaptation of the Tony-winning work. Meryl Streep also has a major film commitment first. Many projects are announced and then pushed back. Sometimes it's financing that hasn't been completed, or star's schedules can't be coordinated. Weinstein had to spend so much money marketing "The Iron Lady," that he actually lost money despite Streep's Academy Award. Wonder if that's one of the reasons why he wanted G's attached; he opens doors.

Weinstein lost money for investors on one of his last deals. It's not that anyone NEEDS G or anyone else per se, it's that EVERYONE wants to hedge their bets and get the very best possible advantage, ALL of the time. Rumors are that this movie would be a "prestige pic" but not an easy sell because of the downbeat story.

‘August: Osage County’ Adds Margo Martindale

EXCLUSIVE: Margo Martindale has joined the cast of August: Osage County. The Emmy winner will play the jaded sister of Meryl Streep in the feature adaptation of Tracy Letts’ family clan play.

Martindale’s character is Mattie Fae Aiken, the wife of Charles Aiken, played by Chris Cooper, and the sister of Violet Weston, played by Streep.

The actress will start filming in Oklahoma on September 24. Martindale won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2011 for her role on FX’s Justified.

Julia Roberts also stars in August: Osage County as Violet’s daughter Barbara. Abigail Breslin, playing Barbara’s daughter, recently joined the film, as did Juliette Lewis. John Wells is directing August: Osage County, Letts is writing the adaptation of his Pulitzer and Tony-winning play.

George Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing along with Jean Doumanian, Steve Traxler and Claire Rudnick Polstein. The Weinstein Co. is financing and distributing August: Osage County.
