Kilkenny George Clooney lookalike looks nothing like George Clooney

Traditionally, someone classed as a ‘lookalike’ must bear some sort of physical resemblance to the person in question. Obviously that criteria didn’t apply in Kilkenny recently.

27-year old David Glendon beat off reportedly stiff competition in the Marble City recently, where nearly 800 people entered a competition to see who most resembled Hollywood hunk George Clooney, whose ancestors hail from the region.

Entrants were asked to submit photographs where they posed and dressed like the suave and sophisticated Clooney and a panel of experts reduced the 783 entrants to a shortlist of five before announcing Glendon as the winner.

The problem is, as you can see from the photograph above, (photie wasn't there]

is that Glendon doesn’t look like Clooney at all, not one bit. There is absolutely no resemblance whatsoever, yet as a reward for 'winning' the competition, David gets to head off to the Oscars in March with Kilkenny-based film-maker and historian Gabriel Murray, who organised the competition.

Commenting on his success, the “currently single” Glendon (not for long, eh David?) told the Kilkenny People: “I decided to do it for a bit of craic, for the fun of it.

“I am delighted to have won. To go to the Oscars, well that would be anyone’s dream come true,” he said.

Heads are bound to turn at the glitzy ceremony in Los Angeles next month when Hollywood’s finest catch sight of Glendon’s Clooney-like movie-star looks.

Our sympathies go out to the poor members of the press manning the red carpet when George and David enter the Kodak Arena before the event.

After all, how will they ever tell them apart?

'My pals don't believe me... but I AM George Clooney's cousin'

By Caroline Crawford

Thursday February 02 2012

AN Irish cousin of Hollywood legend George Clooney has revealed how friends wouldn't believe her when she told of the connection.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Fiona Clooney (26) first became aware of her famous relative when a cousin completed a family tree linking them to the Oscar-nominated actor's Kentucky clan.

"It took a while to sink in. None of my friends would believe me, it got to the stage where I just stopped telling people," she said.

Since then she has holidayed in the US home of George's father Nicholas and taken him on tours of his ancestral home here in Ireland. But she has yet to meet her famous cousin.

"I'm still working on that," she laughed.

The two families have stayed in constant contact, with George's father Nicholas paying a visit to Fiona's Abbeyleix, Co Laois, home five years ago.

"He came over about five years ago and saw the cottage next door to me and we went to Kilkenny to the old family home and out for dinner. I have to say, he's such a lovely man. He's a real genuine person and he's so grounded and down to earth," she recalled.

Two years ago, Fiona and boyfriend David Greene enjoyed a holiday with the Clooney family in the US. "Myself and my boyfriend where on holidays in New York a couple of years back and because we'd often be in contact with Nick he invited us down to where he was in Kentucky. We stayed there three days and had a fantastic time.

"He treated us like the VIPs out there because we were the Irish relatives," she revealed.

Fiona stars in a new documentary George Clooney's Irish Roots -- The Real Descendants by Kilkenny documentary maker Gabriel Murray. It tells the story of the star's links to Abbeyleix in Co Laois.

But far from being stunned at the famous link, Fiona took the whole thing in her stride.

"Strangely it fell into place. We always knew that my great-grandparents and grandparents had been in touch with their American relatives, they would send letters and packages but they lost touch over the years.

"I think most people didn't believe me, they thought I was messing about it so in the end I just went with the joke," she revealed.

Fiona is a member of Abbeyleix Heritage Town Tourism. She now hopes that if her famous cousin makes the planned trip to Ireland that it will help promote the area.

"It's such a beautiful town but we just don't get many tourists. Maybe if George comes to the town it will spark an interest," she added.

The feature documentary will be completed in April.

If you ask me, she's using an incredibly lose definition of 'cousin' here, but still it must be exciting for her!

GEORGE CLOONEY is roaring off on a motorbike tour to console himself after missing out on the Best Actor gong at last night's Baftas.

he star — nominated for role in The Descendants — is going to ride around Ireland after taking advice from petrolhead pal BONO.

Although George, who lost out to The Artist's Jean Dujardin admitted the wild weather there terrifies him, his biggest worry is that he will have Gaelic ladies hurling themselves at him.

George said: "I ran into Bono in Toronto who was there for a documentary about U2. Turns out he's as nuts about bikes as me and told me Ireland is a great place to ride around.

"He's already given me a list of cool places to check out so I'm really looking forward just riding around the country on my bike."

George and the U2 frontman rode around Lake Como in Italy together last year.

George added: "It will be very hard to keep your balance on one of those bikes when you've got Irish housewives throwing themselves in front of the wheels."

He'll be all right for personal security with girlfriend Stacy Keibler as a pillion passenger — she's a former pro wrestler.

A petrol station owner in Dublin was trying to increase his sales.
So, he put up a sign that read, 'Free Sex with Fill-Up.'
Soon Paddy pulled in, filled his tank and asked for his free sex.
The owner told him to pick a number from 1 to 10.
If he guessed correctly, he would get his free sex.

Paddy guessed 8, and the proprietor said, 'You were close.
The number was 7. Sorry. No sex this time.'

A week later, Paddy, along with his friend Mick, pulled in for another
Fill-up. Again he asked for his free sex.

The proprietor again gave him the same story, and asked him

to guess the correct number.

Paddy guessed 2 this time. The proprietor said, 'Sorry, it was 3.
You were close, but no free sex this time.'

As they were driving away, Mick said to Paddy,
'I think that game is rigged and he doesn't really
give away free sex.'

Paddy replied, 'No it ain't, Mick. It's not rigged at all at all.
My wife won twice last week.'

Limerick’s Corrigan brothers write song for McIIroy and Clooney
The Corrigan Brothers

By Anne Sheridan

Published on Friday 23 March 2012 08:00

THE CORRIGAN brothers are back, and this time they are singing the successes of golfer Rory McIlroy and praising George Clooney’s Irish heritage after moving on from US President Barack Obama.

The brothers, who hail from Castletroy in Limerick, appear on have another American hit on their hands, after previously reaching the American top 40 with “There’s no one as Irish as Barack Obama”. That song enjoyed over nine million YouTube hits, while the trio were also mentioned in President Obama’s address in Dublin last year.

“Last week we were asked by an American friend to record a song for a golf news site in honour of Rory’s achievement. We wrote and recorded the song and 24 hours later it had appeared all over the sports media and mainstream US media. We were amazed,” Ger Corrigan, lead singer with the band, told the Limerick Leader.

The newspaper USA Today have featured the song, as well as NBC news, CBS news, the Fox sports website Yardbarker, ESPN as well as hundreds of other social media sites, blogs and online newspapers. “We obviously underestimated the popularity of Rory McIlroy in the USA,” laughed Ger.

The brothers rushed to release the song as a single in the USA and they think it may eclipse the Obama hit. It now has over 20,000 views on YouTube. “The single is getting airplay across the sports radio networks as well as mainstream networks and it has featured on CBS and NBC national news as well as news and sports networks in Canada,” continued Ger. The Corrigan brothers will also film a performance of the single for CBS TV in Ireland later this month, and said they are currently completing the music for a film on George Clooney’s Irish roots which will be on cinema release in the USA later this year, as well as planning a tour of the West Coast of the US in September.

Recently they performed “Welcome Home George Clooney” in Kilkenny where they met relatives of The Descendants star, in anticipation of the film star’s visit here this March.

From an article about his Irish ancestry and the Titanic:

It has been said that Sarah Clooney, a distant relative from County Laois, was the person responsible for making the carpets which lined the ship, and that Clooney will learn more about her story when he makes a visit to Ireland later this in year. His familial link will be detailed in Gabriel Murray’s documentary “George Clooney’s Irish Roots — The Real Descendants”, a pun on his latest film release.

Maybe he's there for this:

#TITANIC MEMORIAL CRUISE - Following Balmoral's recent call to Belfast in memory of Titanic, the Fred.Olsen Lines cruiseship returned to Southampton where today she started a 12-night Titanic Memorial Cruise which will follow the White Star Line liner's original itinerary that included calling to Queenstown, now Cobh.

Before Balmoral calls to Cobh tomorrow, she is to pass Cherbourg, where the passenger tender SS Nomadic served the liner that layed anchored offshore. The 101 year-old tender was also built by Harlalnd & Wolff and she is undergoing restoration work in Belfast, to read more about her click HERE.

Likewise to Balmoral's Belfast visit, her arrival to Cobh is the inaugural call for this year's season, though her poignant arrival will be two days short of Titanic's call a century ago on 11th April 1912.

On Titanic's second anchorage at Queenstown, this too required tenders to transfer 123 passengers who embarked from the town's pier and of those only 44 survived the disaster. The timber built pier still exists albeit what survives is in a derelict state. There have been calls to raise funds to save the structure as previously reported.

Along the scenic waterfront passengers can take a tour of the town's new Titanic Experience in the White Star Line building, the Queenstown Heritage Story in the Cobh Hertiage Centre and the walking Titanic Trails.

From Cobh the Balmoral will sail across the Atlantic, arriving at the Titanic site on April 14th/15th - exactly 100 years on from this tragic voyage, where a memorial service will be held to pay tribute to the brave passengers and crew who perished on that fateful night.

The cruise will then continue to Halifax, Nova Scotia, the final resting place of many who were on board, before sailing on to New York, the Titanic's ultimate planned destination.

Looks like he's been to the Titanic Expo in Cobh, according to John Regan @SamuelJArun52. Bit more info there.

Cobh goes Clooney mad

By Tom Mc Carthy on April 8, 2012in Entertainment
George Clooney has been spotted doing the rounds in Cobh, taking in the Titanic exhibition, Fota Wildlife Park and dinner at Gilbert’s.

The mega-rich movie star and activist, who was recently arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, is likely to get a warmer reception from the female contingent of Cobh at least. He is believed to be making a whistle-stop tour of both Cork and Belfast in search of his ancestors and long-lost relatives. Meanwhile, Cork women are also searching – for his current whereabouts.
