Hell there is lots to like about the 90s Katie! I was a lot younger. A big plus. Really big plus! The U.S. economy better than it ever was, discovered Starbucks, no social media, and we had Seinfeld, Friends, NYPD Blue, and ER to indulge in on American TV. And I discovered this delicious young actor named George Clooney. Not a bad decade at all .... :D:D
I hope all of our Northeast friends survived the nor’easter yesterday. The winds here were out of control. But we didn’t have to worry about flooding or snow. But we lost power all day but thankfully got it back last night. Even the Federal Government was closed yesterday.

Donnamarie - Glad you got your power back. Hope it wasn't out long enough to spoil the food in the fridge. NYC got lots of rain and high winds. Lost a few trees, but all in all not too bad. Today is a beautiful sunny day. You'd never know we had a storm!
How's everyone across the pond doing? Has the snow stopped yet? I hope you all have help digging out. Maybe you'll get warmer weather soon and it will all melt away.

Thanks Lizzy. A few years ago we finally wised up and bought a portable generator after so many years of enduring storms that left us not only powerless for days but with a frig full of spoiled food.
I’ve been reading about the severe cold and snow happening in Europe. Hopefully spring is coming soon. The daffys are already showing themselves where we live despite the calendar.

Just checking in... everyone on the East Coast ok??? We're under water in alot of places, as in 6 ft or more. A few deaths reported here and along the east coast from trees falling on moving cars. Hey, Ireland and England, you guys okay?? You're all in my prayers. We'll get through this.

PP -Hope you're safe and dry. It's weird hearing about how hard some places were hit when the storm had so little impact here. A few power outages and some trees downed but on the whole we were very lucky.
It rained for a couple of days and then it stopped. The end. The sun is out and it's a bright winter day. Back to normal?

Re: March Chit Chat
Way2Old - Of course Oscars! Having seen none of the movies (only trailers and reviews), I watched to see Jimmy Kimmel and all the pretty clothes. Didn't like the songs. (Spent most of the commercials and speeches watching one of my favorite movies - "MINIONS"!!! - I know, I know, but it cracks me up!)
Wanted Laurie Metcalf to win just because I love her work, but I really like Alison Janney, too so that's ok. Don't think I would have given best picture to "The Shape of Water". From what I saw, not my kind of movie. I think I would have liked "The Florida Project", but it wasn't nominated. Maybe "Ladybird" or "Get Out" (although I don't like horror movies). Oh, and really happy for Sam Rockwell finally being recognized.
Ok? What did you think?

Re: March Chit Chat
I think all of the acting awards were the right picks. The adapted screenplay was expected, but disappointing; I thought Mudbound was a better adaptation. Original screenplay was spot on; I loved reading it, and I don't even like the genre. Jordan Peele should have won for best director too, IMO, but I would have been happy with Greta Gerwig. And the best picture...? Please. I saw every one of those movies except Phantom Thread (couldn't find it without leaving town), and any of them would have been a better pick than The Shape of Water.

Why do you think "The Shape of Water" got so much hype? Was it because of the look of the movie, or was there more to it?

Re: March Chit Chat
I think it's a unique story concept, and the visuals are undeniably remarkable. But the details of its execution fall short, IMO. del Toro is in the process of his Hollywood genius certification, so there's that. I didn't find it 'moving.' It's one of those movies you're supposed to like. I just didn't. Then again, I didn't like Manchester by the Sea, either (or, in the distant past, The English Patient), so I'm probably not the right person to ask about the hype.

BTW, Lizzy, Get Out is nothing like a typical 'horror' movie. You have to see it. I hate horror, so I resisted seeing it. But I gave in, and it was one of the best movies I've seen. Really.

To anyone in the path of this next snowstorm: Good luck and be safe! We're expecting anywhere from 3" to a foot of snow Tuesday into Wednesday. Then we'll get temperatures in the 40s and everything will melt and turn to slush. Why did winter have to wait til almost spring to come?

Re: March Chit Chat
I haven’t seen ‘The Shape of Water’ so I can’t comment on it. Just watching clips it seems like a very tender movie but odd at the same time. I have lots to catch up on when these movies make it to Amazon. What I have seen ... ‘The Post’ and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great storytelling. I also have seen ‘Three Billboards’, ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Lady Bird’, and ‘Phantom Thread’. I thought Steep’s performance was terrific. I thought McDormand’s performance was raw and gripping and I did love her acceptance speech last night. But I think of the two I preferred Streep’s more subtle portrayal of Katherine Graham. I thought ‘Phantom Thread’ was a fascinating and unexpected story with a Hitchcock twist to it. The music and the costume design, which did win, were stunning. Daniel Day-Lewis doesn’t disappoint.
Wag2, after you mentioned ‘The Big Sick’ a few weeks ago I checked it out. It was such an enjoyable movie. It is not easy to find entertaining, smart and relatable romantic comedies. This one was solid. And the back story - written by a husband and wife and based on their real life romance was brilliant. I remember you said that at the very least this movie should get a Best Screenplay nomination ... and it did. Rightly so!

D-marie, I'll see Phantom Thread on one of the services. Daniel Day-Lewis is phenomenal, and I wouldn't miss his farewell movie performance.

Re: March Chit Chat
I haven't seen any of the award-winning movies yet, since I don't have the chance to go to the movies that often. What I do really like is that our tv stations show a lot of award-winning movies of the past years around that time. So I had the chance to watch 'Good Will Hunting', 'From Now to Eternity', 'The Shawshank Redemption', 'In the Heat of the Night' and a few others over the last weeks.
Today I found 'Victor/Victoria' on VOD and just watched it. I know it's not very up-to-date, but I simply love this movie. All the characters are just perfect.
When my husband and I first went to the States in 1996, we thought about watching a play on Broadway but decided to climb the World Trade Center instead. Two days later, we met a couple who told us that they had just seen 'Victor/Victoria' on Broadway - with Julie Andrews!
I'm not sad because I missed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Julie Andrews live on Broadway. Because climbing up WTC was a once-in-a-lifetime chance either, we just didn't know it at that time...

Lizzy, the Minions and especially Tip & Oh (from Home) dominate allotted screen time with the two-year-old here. And don't be offended. She provides me with some of my most enjoyable conversations.

We have headed off more than a few adolescent meltdowns with a timely "What is the purpose of your face?" or by noting that said adolescent is 'sad mad.'
The scene where Oh is driving the Slushious (sp?) while Tip and Pig sleep in the back, after they've bonded...? And Oh turns up the music and actually feels how to move to it? I love that scene. Laugh every time. One of my favorites ever, animated or live action.
Did you know there's a Home series? The little one has memorized every episode.

Way2Old -I know the scene you mean, but don't ask me how to spell Slushious(?). I love the scene where the Gorg(?) comes out to get the "shusher" and it turns out to be a little guy in a BIG suit - and the party at the end where everyone starts to dance!
I didn't know there's a series of Home, and it's a good thing I didn't. DO NOT tell me where to find it! I'd probably be watching it all the time. I love animated films and I'm always watching them on YouTube. As a matter of fact, the only nominated film I saw this year was Lou - an animated short, and last night I watched Wall-E for the umpteenth time. Why are cockroaches so cute in animation and so disgusting in real life?
Anyhoo...Are you guys getting hit by this stupid storm? If you are, I hope it's not too bad. I just looked out the window and it's still snowing - has been since early afternoon - but it really isn't accumulating. I'm sure there are other places getting hit harder than we are, but so far we've been lucky. Hope you are, too. Be safe and warm.

Re: March Chit Chat
It's cold, but not snowy. Or even raining today, thank the weather gods. We seem to be at the center of a weird conflation of hellish systems, where we get one from column A and two from column B. For instance, last week we got all the wind but not the precipitation, and the weeks before it would rain for days on end, break for a day of beautiful sunny 70-degree spring perfection, then drop 40 degrees again. I don't know how kids learn about 'seasons' anymore; they don't exist. At least, not the way they used to be.
Anyway, I won't tell you where to find the Home series. Netflix Kids. Just know that some of the episodes are pretty damn funny. Netflix Kids. Most of the characters from the movie are in it, there are some new ones, and Tip deals with some obnoxious 'friends' in her Gratuity Tucci way. Netflix Kids.

I really enjoyed The Shape of Water, but oscar winner? Not so sure. Reminded me so much of Delicatessen from years and years ago, in tone and style.
Three Billboards is one of the those films I wouldn't have bothered to see (it seems to be a 'message' film) but someone here recommended it and I'm so glad I saw it.

Watch The Shape of Water in a few years. I'll bet you a bottle of Casamigos to a case of ginger ale that it doesn't hold up.
I think I'm probably the one who recommended Three Billboards. I saw it before it went 'wide,' and I knew it was going to be a winner.

Hawking was a brilliant thinker. I read one of his quotes this morning ....
“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”
Kind of puts things in perspective.
