PAN - Very Happy Very Happy WTF is the deal with Matt Lucas' song "Baked Potato" that I saw on MB's twitter page? Is it some sort of fund-raiser? scratch It's the silliest thing I've seen from a grown-up in ages!

Just wanted to add that as of today Capt. Tom has raised over 26 MILLION pounds!!!! and he's still walking for charity. He was on MB's radio show today and they announced that the purchase price of their song ("You'll Never Walk Alone") will go the NHS as well. They're hoping to get the song to No.1 in time for Tom's birthday on April 30th.

There's also a movement to get Capt. Tom a knighthood! Wouldn't that be a wonderful present for his 100th birthday?!

JUSTGIVING
Frank Mills, a 6-year-old boy from Bristol, England with spina bifida, is raising money for healthcare workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic by achieving an incredible feat of his own.
Frank only began walking 18 months ago, and still struggles to complete even short distances due to his condition, his mother Janet told BBC News.
Spina bifida causes a gap in the spine after a baby’s spine and spinal cord do not develop properly in the womb, according to the NHS.
After Frank witnessed 99-year-old Captain Tom Moore walk 100 laps with a walker at his Bedfordshire home, the young boy became inspired to walk with his own walker while also raising money for NHS Charities Together.
“When Frank saw Captain Tom on TV, he said, ‘I want to do that,’ ” Janet said. “So we took his walker outside and chalked up [about 33 feet] on the pavement.”

“He was very enthusiastic and shouted at one of the neighbors to sponsor him,” she added.
The family then decided to set up a JustGiving account to raise the funds.
Though his initial goal was £99 (the equivalent of about $121) — the age of Tom Moore — Frank has far surpassed that objective. As of Wednesday afternoon, the fundraiser has amassed over £89,935, the equivalent of more than $110,000.
“We cannot believe how people are responding,” Janet told the BBC.

Frank was born prematurely at 25 weeks, according to the BBC, and spent five weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Southmead Hospital.

In the years since, he’s gotten “absolutely amazing care and dedication” from both Southmead and the Bristol Children’s Hospital, making Frank all the more inspired to support the staff, Janet told the outlet.
“People have been so generous, especially at a time when people are struggling financially,” his father Tony told the BBC. “It restores your faith in humanity.”

On Friday, the Mills family wrote on the JustGiving page, “WOWZERS!!! Thank you everyone so much. Frank says he’s going to try and do this everyday now!”
Donations to Frank’s fundraiser for NHS Charities Together can be made here.
As of Wednesday, there have been 124,743 cases and 16,509 deaths attributed to coronavirus in the United Kingdom, according to The New York Times.

Great story, especially when the side flags of the Mail are full of well-off 'personalities' who have called the paps to complain that they're finding it really hard...and the likes of Beckham and McCarthy furlonging staff from government money.

Lizzy, yes I can confirm that Matt Lucas is often less than funny - his friend Rebel Wilson is a lot better and a good laugh..........

PAN - The only saving grace for that earworm Lucas released on the world is that he did it for charity - and that it's a reminder of what to do re: the corona virus. I can't get it out of my head!!! If he was standing in front of me I swear I'd smack him!

I hope someone tells Capt. Tom Moore how he inspired this lovely little boy. He'd be so proud! How's the campaign going to get him a knighthood?

Publix is doing what they can to help those in need amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The supermarket chain announced on Wednesday it would be buying fresh produce and milk from struggling farms and dairies across the country, donating the items to food banks feeding hungry Americans.
Their initiative comes as the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States has forced restaurant, hotel, and school closures, leaving farmers who traditionally supply to those institutions with an excess of product.
Many of those farms and dairies have been left with no choice but to dispose of their stock, with no distribution process in place.

But Publix's program will fix that hiccup in the supply chain. Buying the food from Florida produce farmers and southeastern dairy farmers, they'll give the products to local Feeding America member food banks — providing families with fresh fruits, vegetables, and milk during the pandemic.

More than 150,000 pounds of produce and 43,500 gallons of milk will be donated in the first week of Publix's new initiative, alone.

"As a food retailer, we have the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the needs of families and farmers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic," Publix CEO Todd Jones said in a statement. "In this time of uncertainty, we are grateful to be able to help Florida’s produce farmers, southeastern dairies and families in our communities."
"In addition to providing much-needed produce and milk to food banks, this initiative provides financial support to farmers during this challenging time," Jones added. "We’re honored to be able to work with these groups and do good together for our communities."

Publix has long supported local charities helping to alleviate hunger, giving more than $2 billion in food to people in need since 2009 (with a pledge of an additional $2 billion in food donations over the next 10 years).

The company's new initiative also comes after it made donations totaling $2 million to support Feeding America member food banks during the pandemic.
Said Paco Velez, president and CEO of Feeding South Florida: "As we respond to the coronavirus pandemic, Publix understands that more families are turning to us to help put food, especially fresh produce and milk, on their tables. We’re grateful to Publix for not only supporting growers, but also for their years of support of Feeding South Florida."
As of Friday morning, there have been at least 867,105 reported cases of coronavirus in the U.S. and at least 44,464 deaths, according to The New York Times.

I've been wondering why farmers haven't been offering to donate their excess product to people without enough to eat. I didn't think about the transportation problem. Kudos to Publix for figuring out a solution to the problem in their area. I wish it could be duplicated across the country.

This is awesome.  I had been seeing news reports showing farms plowing under crops in their fields and dumping fresh milk and it was heartbreaking.  How can this be?  I never thought about how difficult it is for suppliers to transfer their products to the regular public when they normally sell their products to large institutions or restaurants.  Kudos to Publix.

NJ Community Puts on DIY Disney Parade for 10-Year-Old Whose Make-A-Wish Trip Was Cancelled
When Khloe’s visit to Disney World got derailed by the coronavirus pandemic, her family and friends brought the magic to her

Khloe Sudol was gearing up for a Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World when the coronavirus pandemic canceled her plans.
So her family and friends in Upper Township, New Jersey, rallied together to bring Disney World to her.
The 10-year-old, who has a rare blood disease, got a DIY Disney parade outside her home on her birthday in early April, complete with appearances from Cinderella, Mickey Mouse, Frozen's Olaf and more, plus a magical rendition of “Happy Birthday.” The parade of characters also left Khloe gifts.
Khloe’s trip to Disney will eventually be rescheduled when it is safe, Michael Dominick, Director of Communications at Make-A-Wish New Jersey, told local news outlet ABC6.

“We have ensured to our wish families that travel wishes in the near future have been postponed, but not cancelled,” he said. "Khloe's wish has not yet been scheduled. We remain committed to granting a wish to every eligible child we are working with as soon as it is safe to do so, including Khloe!"
On March 12, PEOPLE first reported that the Disney theme parks in Orlando, Florida and Anaheim, California, would both close over that weekend, following the closure of other major tourist attractions and the cancelation of events around the world.
The Walt Disney Company then announced on March 27 that both Disney World and Disneyland would be closed “indefinitely” due to the ongoing spread of the virus. The parks were originally planning to reopen at the end of March.

Dorothy Jean Tillman is a typical 14-year-old in many ways: she loves dancing, scrolling through TikTok and hanging out with her friends.
But the Chicago teenager’s latest achievement — a master’s degree from Unity College — certainly sets her apart from her peers.
“I’m very proud of her and I’m proud of the example that she’s leaving behind,” mom Jimalita Tillman tells PEOPLE of her daughter, who goes by DJ.
DJ’s academic journey began in schools for gifted and talented children, though she soon came to feel that the distractions of a regular school environment were actually making it harder for her to learn.

With that in mind, she started dual enrollment for high school courses at 8 years old, going to regular class during the day, then taking online high school modules after school.
After completing high school, she earned her associate’s degree in psychology from the College of Lake County at age 10, then went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Excelsior College at 12.
Earlier this month, she accomplished her biggest feat yet with a master’s degree in environmental science and sustainable engineering from Unity College.

“We did a little family celebration,” she tells PEOPLE of her graduation, which was tentatively postponed to August due to coronavirus restrictions. “It was something small and simple because we still have to respect the rules of quarantine.”

DJ says it was her grandmother who first stoked her interest in STEM and engineering, as she’d buy her various magazines and books on the topic, which led the avid young pupil to join engineering and coding enrichment programs as a child.

While she’s unsure what her future holds at the moment, she knows she wants it to somehow involve STEM — and she’s starting by giving back.

Last year, DJ accompanied her mom on a business trip to Cape Town, South Africa, where she met a group of local girls who shared her passion for STEM — but lacked the resources DJ enjoyed back at home. Inspired, she developed a plan to bring STEM labs to her new friends, and began fundraising for things like computers and microscopes, which she hopes to bring to Cape Town once coronavirus restrictions have lifted.
“I know in the future I want to be an entrepreneur. I want to be my own boss,” she says. “I kind of want to be able to take everything that I’ve learned, all of my degrees, and group them into one thing. Because the way I am, I can’t stay on one project. I have to hop around to different things to make sure I stay passionate in everything equally.”
Meanwhile, she’s also working on a book called Unlock the Jeanius Within — which she calls a “wellness, goal-oriented” compilation featuring excerpts from various people — and also floats the idea of one day hosting a podcast.

“To get where you want to be, you have to be dedicated,” she says. “ like, ‘Oh man, she’s so smart, I can never do that.’ That’s not what I want them to think when they read or hear or see my story. I want them to be like, 'Oh my gosh, she's so goal-oriented. I need to be determined. I need to have tunnel vision to get to where I want to be. I need to be able to communicate my goals,' and things like that.”
While her academic achievements are certainly impressive, mom Jimalita says it’s her daughter’s ability to balance her studies with a thriving social life that makes her the most proud.

“I try to keep myself really immersed in the arts, so like, normal, quote unquote, kid things,’” DJ says.
She’s a member of a local dance ensemble called The Happiness Club, with which she performs all across Chicago, and she’s also a student ambassador for the Harold Washington Cultural Center, a gig that earned her a trip to the Tony Awards several years back.

DJ has also performed with the Illinois High School Musical Talent Association and the Chicago production of Broadway hit Dear Evan Hansen — and even helped rewrite the Gettysburg Address to a rap, which Hamilton star Miguel Cervantes performed at the Illinois Bicentennial while dressed as Abraham Lincoln.
She’s also an alumnus of the Legacy Flight Academy, a youth aviation nonprofit inspired by the Tuskegee Airmen.

George Floyd’s Brother, Terrence, at Prayer Vigil: “Let’s Do This Another Way”
Posted at 3:15 pm on June 1, 2020 by Jennifer Van Laar

On Monday afternoon George Floyd’s brother, Terrence, led a prayer vigil in Minneapolis at the site where his brother died one week ago. The crowd was silent as Terrence knelt in the street, a poignant, powerful moment.

As he’s stated in earlier public comments (covered by my colleague Brandon Morse here), Floyd stressed that when protests turn into violence and looting they’re not honoring his brother and only further hurt a community already in emotional and economic distress. His comments at the prayer vigil went a little further and are worth highlighting. Holding a bullhorn and addressing the crowd, he said:

“I understand you’re all upset. But like it was already said, I doubt y’all are half as upset as I am.
“So if I’m not over here wilding out, if I’m not over here blowing up stuff, if I’m not over here messing up my community, then what are y’all doing? What are y’all doing? You’re doing nothing, because that’s not gonna bring my brother back at all. It may feel good for the moment, just like when you drink, but when you come down, you’re gonna wonder what you did.
“My family is a peaceful family. My family is God-fearing. Yeah, we are upset. But we’re not gonna take it – we’re not gonna be repetitious. In every case of police brutality the same thing has been happening. Y’all protest, y’all destroy stuff, and things don’t move.
“So let’s do this another way. Let’s stop thinking that our voice don’t matter, and vote. Not just vote for the president. Vote for the preliminaries. Vote for everybody. Educate yourself. Educate yourself. Don’t wait for somebody else to tell you who’s who. Educate yourself and know who you’re voting for. And that’s how we’re gonna hit ’em, because it’s a lot of us…and we’re still gonna do this peacefully.”

Barbra Streisand gives Disney stock to George Floyd's 6-year-old daughter

 • By Caitlin O'Kane

June 15, 2020 / 11:03 AM / CBS News

Gianna Floyd, the daughter of George Floyd, is now a shareholder in Disney. Barbara Streisand gifted the 6-year-old with Disney stock, according to Gianna's Instagram.

The post shows Gianna opening the special package the music icon sent her. Gianna received a letter from Streisand, stock certificates and two albums, according to the photos. "Thank You @barbrastreisand for my package, I am now a Disney Stockholder thanks to you 🥰🥰🥰," the caption reads.

Gianna has more than 52,000 followers on Instagram. Her account is often used to show photos of her late father and to promote justice. George Floyd died last month when a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. The officer was fired and charged with murder; three other cops involved in the arrest were also fired and face charges.

GOFUNDME
Rehan Staton, a hard-working college student from Maryland, landed a spot at one of the most prestigious law schools in the country after collecting garbage to make ends meet.
"It was the people that were on the bottom of the hierarchy who really lifted me up," Staton told CBS News of his path to Harvard Law School. "It helps me keep my eyes on the prize. If this were just about me and just fighting for myself, I definitely would have quit."
Staton spent years waking up in the early morning hours to collect trash for Bates Trucking & Trash Removal before attending class at the University of Maryland. It was an arduous job that left him no time to shower, he recalled to the Boston Globe, and he often sat in the back of his lecture halls to steer clear of classmates. But the 24-year-old worked this tireless schedule to overcome some of the numerous obstacles he's faced.

From an early age, Staton said his father struggled to raise him and his older brother as a single parent.
“My mom abandoned my dad, my brother and I when she moved back to Sri Lanka,” Staton told the newspaper. “I was probably too young to notice some of the things that happened, but I know it was bad.”

"Things just kept falling on us," Staton said. "My dad lost his job at one point and had to start working three jobs in order to provide for us. It got to the point where I barely got to see my father, and a lot of my childhood was very lonely."

These financial difficulties often meant the family went without food or electricity, Staton recalled.
Despite this, Staton excelled in high school while also training to become a professional boxer. But his dreams were diverted when he experienced a double shoulder injury during his senior year, CNN reported. When he didn't get into college, Staton signed up to become a sanitation worker — and the experience would be life-changing.
"It was the first time in my life people were lifting me up for the sake of lifting me up and not because I was good at sports," Staton told the outlet.
Soon, a higher-up at the company caught wind of Staton's story and took him to meet a professor at Bowie State University. That professor eventually persuaded the university's admissions board to allow Staton to enroll, and he started that year.

Staton later transferred to the University of Maryland and set his sights on going to law school. But during his studies, his father experienced a stroke, and Staton rejoined Bates Trucking & Trash Removal to support his family and continue his schooling.
"We all took losses and made sacrifices to take care of each other," Staton told the Boston Globe.
After graduating in 2018, Staton took an analyst job at a consulting firm in Washington D.C. He eventually applied to law school, and was accepted to Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California and Pepperdine University. (Georgetown University; New York University; the University of California, Berkeley; and UCLA placed him on their waitlist.)

Ultimately, Staton chose Harvard Law School, and he'll start class this fall. A GoFundMe has been set up to raise funds for Staton's tuition and has raised more than $46,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.
"When I look back at my experiences, I like to think that I made the best of the worst situation," Staton told CNN. "Each tragedy I faced forced me out of my comfort zone, but I was fortunate enough to have a support system to help me thrive in those predicaments."

It's great, but it must have come as a bit of a shock that Harvard are still going to be

charging full university fees even tho many lectures will be online, whereas Princeton is not.

But no doubt he'd allowed for that way before Covid 19

Harvard received stimulus money and said it was for the students. Trump got involved and said because of their endowment they should return the money. So they returned it and didn't give any to the students. It's not fair to the one's who want the full Harvard experience the price is too high.

Considering all the great schools he had to choose from he must be really smart. I can't imagine he'd accept enrollment anywhere without a plan for paying his tuition and expenses. It wold be nice, though, if Harvard made it easier for students of limited means.

Andi and Thomas Bonura's eight children

ANDI BONURA
Five siblings that were living apart in foster care have been reunited permanently thanks to one loving Texas family.
On May 6, husband and wife Andi and Thomas Bonura decided to officially adopt siblings Thomas, 8, Carter, 8, David, 6, Gabrielle, 4 and Bryson, 2, facilitated by DePelchin Children's Center via Zoom call.
Now, the couple are legal parents to eight kids total: their five newly adopted children and their biological children Joey, 11, Sadie, 10 and Daphne, 8.
"These are their brothers and sisters and there's no argument," Andi told Good Morning America in an interview published Monday. "The kids have been through a lot but they're the sweetest. They're amazing — and resilient."

Andi said that for years, she and Thomas wanted to adopt due to her struggles to conceive. She lost one pregnancy then became pregnant with twins, who arrived early at 25 weeks.
One of the twins, Eli, did not survive, while Joey, now 11, has cerebral palsy and is visually impaired — only able to communicate through sign language.
"He's very smart ... whenever people start to pity him, I tell them, 'Don't.' He's the happiest kid in this house," Andi told GMA of Joey.

The mom went on to give birth to daughters Sadie and Daphne, neither of which she was able to carry full term — solidifying Andi's decision to not have any more children biologically.
In 2017, Andi and Thomas got licensed to become foster parents, she told GMA. That November, they began fostering baby Bryson straight from the hospital.

David and Gabrielle soon joined their brother in the Bonura's care, while older twin brothers Thomas and Carter, who lived with other families, would come to the home and visit their siblings.

Not long after, the Bonuras were given the legal opportunity to adopt all five kids as their own.
"One day we got a call saying, '[The parents] are terminating rights. Do you want them?'" Bonura recalled. "We said yes."
After the adoption was finalized, the Bonuras neighbors organized a car parade with family and friends to celebrate the new family of ten.
"They're fun to be around and they're the greatest kids," Andi said. "God's hand was in it. Our family is complete."

Dr. Cynthia Kudji Sylvester vividly remembers the day 31 years ago when she knew she was going to become a doctor.
It was 1989 and she was visiting Ghana — the West African country her family left when she was just 2 — when a female stranger who needed urgent help approached the then-19-year-old.
“She was talking about her daughter who was sick and had a fever,” Cynthia, now 49, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “She picked us just because we were American. There was such a drastic divide between us, and that really hit home. It was in that moment that I knew I wanted to be a physician.”
What Cynthia never could have known was how long that journey would take — and the surprising person who would join her.

Just a year after that memorable trip to Ghana, Cynthia became pregnant with her daughter Jasmine during her senior year at Tulane University, and had to put her dreams on hold.
“Medical school at that time was out of the question,” says Cynthia.
She instead became a nursing assistant and eventually worked her way up to nurse practitioner over the next 10 years.
For more on this inspiring mother-daughter duo, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday, or subscribe here.
With help from her family, Cynthia, who raised Jasmine as a single mom, had finally saved up enough money to go to medical school in 2013.
“I knew it was time,” says Cynthia, who went on to marry Mark Sylvester, a 50-year-old military IT assistant, last June. “Even though it was a long uphill journey, it shaped me. Every disappointment, every accomplishment made me want to push further and create a better life for my daughter.”

It was then that Jasmine, who was a junior at Louisiana State University, had already decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps — even though she admits she struggled with math and science.
“My mom always inspired me to be everything that I wanted to be,” says Jasmine, now 26. “I watched her overcome things firsthand. We’ve come a long way.”

And while Jasmine is at LSU Health in New Orleans pursuing general surgery, and Cynthia is in Lafayette focusing on family medicine, the two are as close as can be despite the nearly 200 miles apart.
“Jasmine has always been my rock,” says Cynthia. “We’re in this together.”

THE KROGER CO.

LaShenda Williams is making the most of a life-changing opportunity.
Late last year, 46-year-old Williams had fallen on hard times and was living in a car she regularly parked outside of a Kroger in Tennesee. According to USA Today, Williams had experienced abuse and drug addiction, making it difficult for her to find work and a stable home.
"I would lean my seat all the way back so no one would see me because, you know, I knew I wasn't supposed to be there," Williams told NBC News.
But she eventually crossed paths with Kroger hiring manager Jackie Vandal, who gave her a heads up about an upcoming job fair after Williams repeatedly asked if the store was hiring.
"You get a feel if someone's sincere or if they're just trying to get a job to say they got one and then quit a month later," Vandal told USA Today. "She was very sincere."

"It was just a sense, a gut feeling," she added to NBC. "You can just tell when people are really genuine and when people, you know, are trying."
On the day of the job fair, Vandal suggested Williams submit her application online. Williams retrieved an old laptop from her car and spent hours filling out her application with Vandal's help — and as soon as she submitted it, Vandal hired her on the spot.

“We are so lucky to have Lashenda as part of our Kroger family,” Melissa Eads, corporate affairs manager for the Kroger Nashville division, said in a statement to PEOPLE. “Her uplifting spirit is contagious. She has made such a positive impact on her fellow team members, and so many customers as well. We are so proud to have her as an associate," she added.

In a recent report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness, 567,715 Americans experienced homelessness on a single night in Jan. 2019. More than 200,000 of them were sleeping outside or in locations "not meant for human habitation."

According to the organization, one of the primary solutions to homelessness is "rapid re-housing," which works by recruiting landlords to shelter a person or family as soon as possible after becoming homeless. Doing so will help stabilize the person experiencing homelessness by connecting them with services and support while keeping them sheltered until they are no longer facing the threat of being unhoused.

Williams has now been at the store for all of 2020 and is making the most of her opportunity. According to NBC, she saved up enough money to get her own apartment that her coworkers helped to furnish.
"I was sleeping in a parking lot and looking for something to eat," Williams, who helps customers at the self-checkout lines at Kroger, told USA Today.
"Now, all my babies here love on me," she continued. "No one abuses me, and no one calls me dumb and stupid. For the first time in my life, I finally got peace."

A young girl was gifted a sizeable check to purchase a new sewing machine and equipment after making 1,200 masks for health care workers fighting the coronavirus outbreak.
Holli Morgan, an 11-year-old girl from Stone Mountain, Georgia, has made hundreds of protective facial coverings for those on the pandemic's frontlines, according to WGCL. She initially started with a goal of sewing 500 masks, but was motivated to surpass that mark once she reached it.
"I’m going to be honest, I was relieved because I thought — good we can stop," Holli's mother, April McMillian, told the news station of her daughter making her first 500 masks.
"She said, 'No mommy, I’m going to make 1,200,' " McMillian recalled. "I’m like, 'You wanna do what?' "
Holli told WGCL that seeing how much her church helps those in need encouraged her to continue making the masks.

"Every time we pass by the church, we see somebody sitting asking for food or money," Holli said.

With this latest round, Holli said she is focusing on giving them to the homeless and people who couldn't otherwise afford them.
"It makes me feel good," she said of her selfless work.
Holli's ambition, of course, has left a powerful impression on those who know her.
"At a young age, she is aware that she can still make a difference for humanity," Kerwin Lee, senior pastor at Berean Christian Church in Stone Mountain, told the station.

"I love her courage and her willingness to do what she does not only for herself but to help others," he added.
The WGCL crew was also inspired by Holli's commitment to helping those in need, and recently presented her with a $1,200 check to purchase a brand new sewing machine, which will help her make masks easier and faster. She can also use the leftover money to pursue another dream — starting her own a YouTube channel.

PAN - I don't think it's too late, but it's only one piece of the puzzle of voter suppression the Republicans are deploying. The courts will have to deal with all the other issues that are affecting the voting process and the vote count.

A federal judge on Tuesday night ordered the U.S. Postal Service to reverse limitations on mail collection imposed by Trump-backed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, giving the agency until Wednesday morning to inform workers of the court's changes as more mail-in ballots continue to flood in.
In a highly detailed order, Judge Emmet Sullivan of the District Court for the District of Columbia granted an emergency motion by plaintiffs against President Donald Trump to enforce and monitor compliance with Sullivan's previous injunction tied to USPS services.

No later than 9 a.m. Wednesday, the judge said, agency workers must be told that a USPS leader's July guidelines limiting late and extra trips to collect mail are rescinded.

"USPS personnel are instructed to perform late and extra trips to the maximum extent necessary to increase on-time mail deliveries, particularly for Election Mail," Sullivan wrote. "To be clear, late and extra trips should be performed to the same or greater degree than they were performed prior to July 2020 when doing so would increase on-time mail deliveries.
The judge further instructed the Postal Service to send him daily updates on the number of extra and late trips occurring every day at national, regional and local levels, in addition to information about on-time deliveries. And starting Wednesday, the agency and the plaintiffs who sued USPS will meet in a daily video conference to discuss status updates of how the agency is complying with Sullivan's order.

Mark Cuban Reveals Former Mavericks Player Delonte West’s Rehab Is Going 'Incredibly Well'
When the coronavirus pandemic first hit, all 11-year-old Cartier Carey could think about was how the single parents in his community were handling the new stress.
“Ever since I was little, I’ve seen a lot of people struggling,” Cartier tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “During the pandemic, I knew single moms were having a hard time trying to afford diapers for their babies.”
Inspired by the hardships many of his friends’ families were facing due to the pandemic, the sixth grader set up a lemonade stand in front of his house in Hampton, Virginia in July to benefit families in need.

He sold $1 glasses of lemonade and snacks to his neighbors for a couple of hours every day, using the daily earnings to buy diapers and baby wipes. The supplies were then set up on a table outside for people to pick up.

Word about the lemonade stand and its sweet mission spread quickly. In the first three days, Cartier —along with his four siblings, parents and kids in his neighborhood — raised $3,000. To date, the stand has collected more than $7,500, enough to provide nearly 28,000 diapers and wipes to give to hundreds of moms through local shelters, churches and other organizations.

According to Cartier’s mother Britany Stewart, a prospective law student, Cartier has always shown an extraordinary willingness to help others.
“When he was younger, he would ask me if we could give homeless people on the streets money and how we could help them.” Stewart, 30, tells PEOPLE. “He’s helped some kids who were struggling or lonely at his school before.”
Last year Cartier started making care packages —  which included liquid sanitizer, hand warmers, soap, tissues, snacks and water — that he distributed to the homeless.

“If some people, like the homeless, don’t have what they need, they’re not going to live for a long time,” Cartier says. “It’s hard to see, so I love to help out.”
Stewart helped Cartier set up a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised an additional $34,000. Each week they receive hundreds of requests for diapers from parents throughout the country and even from far-flung places like the Philippines.
“I have a baby in diapers still, so I can imagine what a lot of these moms who don't have jobs are going through,” Stewart says. “I feel like if you’re able to, you should give back and help others who can't afford to get things that they need.”
Cartier says he’s just getting started and has established Kids 4 Change 757, a nonprofit organization that urges youth to help out in their communities.
“I want," he adds, "to keep doing things like this for the rest of my life."

I actually can't listen to Trump's whiny voice any longer.  Does he have some sort of speech impediment?

To embed tweets in this forum is really simple.  On twitter, find the 'embed' button and click on it.  Then copy the code it gives you.  Then paste that code in your post in the forum. The forum will do all the magic of turning code into tweet!

12-Year-Old Girl Becomes One of N.Y. Philharmonic's Youngest Composers: A 'Way to Express Myself'
"I feel like music can change how people see the world around them," Grace Moore said at the world premiere of her classical piece, "Summer"
By Joelle Goldstein

A 12-year-old girl is making history as she becomes one of the youngest composers for the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra.
Grace Moore's achievement is explored in a video for the Philharmonic's Very Young Composers program, which provides people with or without musical backgrounds the chance to create music and have it played by the Philharmonic musicians. Participants are also mentored by the Philharmonic Teaching Artists, according to the program.
Moore — who wrote "Summer," the song featured in the video above — was one of the chosen few who had the opportunity to hear her original piece played by the Philharmonic orchestra at a world premiere in October.
"Music just gives me another way to express myself because I'm shy," Moore, of Brooklyn, explained during the event. "I feel like music can change how people see the world around them."

The =AZU2dMcRG08J1-hyfDoyPk2a8SRCxuDJKrhwddNBcnxAd4dHj8PxhlIGlbOAuSu4zpQT6wnFBSg92LDDml2FQUlqmjqUv_DLKXbzPqdzYBzq8VjtZMEu80bmdrZhE5HaEXyYcxEPvif_Qd-YepNDt_vz&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R] seventh-grader, who attends Poly Prep Country Day School in Dyker Heights, first got into music when she was just 2 years old after her mom bought her a piano, CW affiliate WPIX reported.
"I think music is really important," her mother explained in the Philharmonic's video. "If you don't remember anything, you remember a song."
From that point on, Moore has stuck with it and continued to create music — something she told KPIX she hopes will inspire others.
"I hope everyone follows their hobbies and do what they love," she told the local outlet.

Moore explained that she was influenced by what was unfolding around her while writing her classical piece.
"I was thinking about current events in quarantine like coronavirus and Black Lives Matter," she shared in the Philharmonic's video.
She also expressed her gratitude, saying, "I want to say thank you to everyone who decided to choose me."
Her proud mom, who watched on as her daughter's piece was performed, echoed her sentiments in the video.
"I am so happy that she was able to showcase her piece, her debut of 'Summer,' with the wonderful program Very Young Composers and the New York Philharmonic," she said.

This past spring, 11-year-old Aiden Taylor was looking for something to do — just like a lot of kids whose schools were shut down by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
"You can't go outside; kids can't play with their friends . . . it's kind of wack," Aiden tells PEOPLE ahead of Black History Month.
Inspired by his love for reading, the sixth-grader decided to write a children's book, Me and My Afro. His goal was to help kids "love the way they are," Aiden says.
Me and My Afro follows all the adventures Aiden and his favorite hairstyle take together, from riding the bus to playing basketball. Aiden says the book gives kids "something to do [at home] — and who doesn't want to learn about self-love?"

Spencer Jaffe, Aiden's 27-year-old mentor of three years through New York City's Big Brothers Big Sisters program, encouraged Aiden to write Me and My Afro and even helped him edit the 26-page book over Zoom.

"It's been incredible to watch the perseverance he's had in writing and promoting the book," Jaffe says. "Aiden just shows if you put your mind to something, you can accomplish anything."
Jaffe himself has been impacted by Aiden's message.
"Aiden's book has inspired so many kids already … I might be the big brother, but I learn from Aiden every day," he adds.
When they virtually "hangout," the pair also likes to talk about sports and play chess together.
"I never beat him, but I'm getting better!" Aiden says.

Aiden also jokes that he "hired" his mom Monique to help put Me and My Afro together, too.
"Her job was telling the publisher and the illustrator [Tana Teeya] what I wanted the pictures to look like," he says. "For example, I wanted a picture of an ice skating rink downtown and there's water behind it, and when they first drew it, there was no water behind it, so she told them and they fixed it."

Me and My Afro and its accompanying coloring book, which were published in August, have sold more than 1,400 copies to date.
"It makes me feel great because I accomplished this big goal," Aiden says.
Not surprisingly, Aiden plans to continue his career as an author. "Writing's very fun," he says, "and I want to keep inspiring other kids."

Principal Who Stocks Walmart Shelves to Raise Money for His Students Gets $50K Donation from Store
“This is going to go a very, very long way,” said North Charleston High School Principal Henry Darby

A high school principal in South Carolina is being recognized for working around the clock to help take care of his students.
After learning about the economic hardships some of his students face, North Charleston High School Principal Henry Darby took a second job at Walmart, working the overnight shift several days a week in order to raise funds for students in need, the Today show reported.
"I get emotional because when you've got children you've heard slept under a bridge, or a former student and her child are sleeping in a car...I wasn't going to say no," he said during a Today interview that aired Friday.

"At my age, we don't ask for money, we just don't," he added. "You just go ahead and do what you need to do."
Although news of Darby's generosity would eventually go viral, he initially kept the fact that he was working two jobs to himself — even from his manager at Walmart.
"I didn't expect the attention," he said during a recent interview with WCBD. "I simply wanted to work for Walmart without fanfare and to use those resources for my students."
"It leaked out and this is beyond my greatest imagination," he added during his Today show appearance, noting that he gets his sense of duty from his mother, who impressed on him the importance of giving back to his community without asking for anything in return.

In recognition of all of the work that Darby has put in on behalf of his students, Walmart reached out to Today in order to orchestrate a special surprise — presenting him with a $50,000 check.

"You're awesome and we appreciate you here at Walmart for all that you're doing to support your community," said his boss.
"I'm speechless," Darby replied. "Thank you so very much. This is going to go a very, very long way."

As for what the future holds, Darby said that he has no plans to step away from his second job and will continue using that paycheck for his students.
"I'm going to stick with Walmart," he said.
A GoFundMe was also created earlier this month in order to help the principal raise funds — and ended up meeting its original goal of $20,000 within just 48 hours. As of Friday afternoon, the GoFundMe has already raised nearly $100,000.
Darby also told WCBD that someone who recently visited his office offered 10 separate $5,000 scholarships as well as an ongoing $1,000 donation for the next 12 months.

A 79-year-old man from Alberta, Canada, went to beauty school last week for a lesson on how to do his "beautiful" wife's hair and makeup.
His wife of 50 years has always "taken pride in" her appearance and "it's important to her," but due to failing eyesight it became increasingly difficult, Delmar College of Hair and Esthetics director Carrie Hannah told SWNS.
The husband – who has chosen to remain anonymous – wanted to first learn how to do his wife's hair as she kept burning herself with a curling wand because of her vision impairment.

Delmar College set the loving spouse up with a student and mannequin to teach him how to curl hair and protect his wife's skin.
After he learned how to do her hair, he asked the beauty school employees for tips on how to apply mascara on his wife.
"He also asked for tips on applying mascara because that task was hard for her also, so we gave him a makeup lesson too!" Hannah told SWNS. "He spent about an hour with us for lessons on curling iron sets and mascara application."
The husband's love for his wife "touched" staff and students of the beauty school and had them "in tears."

"He lovingly pulled pictures from his wallet, showing everyone his wife, and boasting about how beautiful she has always been and how talented she was with skill set of typing over 100 words a minute when she was working," Hannah told the outlet.
She added, "Her appearance has always been something she has taken pride in and it's important to her so therefore important to him."
"He is turning 80 in May, and I think he is also a very brave man for stepping into a hair college and asking for lessons on styling hair. I don't think too many men would do that," the beauty school director told SWNS.

A Missouri teen who earned a college scholarship is now giving back to others in need to ensure they'll have the same opportunities to succeed.
Joshua Nelson told Good Morning America that he'd been saving up his money so he could pay for college tuition after he graduates from St. Charles West High School this week.
As it turned out, Nelson, 18, didn't need to use his savings because he was awarded the President's Scholarship from Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), where he'll be attending in the fall, GMA reported.
The President's Scholarship is considered the university's "most prestigious," with a $43,000 total value, and is only awarded to five top students annually, according to the school's website.

However, Nelson still wanted to put his $9,000 to use — so the teen opted to donate his savings to fund a scholarship at his high school for other students in need, according to the outlet.
"It comes from my upbringing and faith," Nelson explained to GMA. "I've always lived by strong principles as far as being a cheerful giver and having an open hand when it comes to giving back so I feel like that really motivated me."

Nelson decided to fund an annual scholarship at his high school after meeting with his counselor, Yolanda Curry, according to GMA.
The teen said he initially planned to donate his money only once, but later changed his idea to give annual $1,000 payments, which now goes toward the Joshua Nelson Leaders In Action Scholarship, the outlet reported.
The scholarship will include Nelson's $1,000 donation, and outside donations have help ensured the fund will be around for many years to come.
"I was actually shocked... I wasn't expecting it at all!" Curry recalled to the outlet of developing the fund with Nelson. "He asked if we could Zoom one day because he had a great idea and wanted to share it with me. I could tell he was really excited."

On June 1, Nelson got to hand out his first scholarship to fellow student Darrell Montalvo-Luna, according to GMA.
The two reportedly snapped a photo together in which Nelson and Montalvo-Luna stand side-by-side with a giant $2,000 check between them (Montalvo-Luna received an extra $1,000 as the inaugural recipient).
"Joshua has the heart of a servant leader," Curry told GMA of the teen's actions. "He leads by example and he's genuinely excited when good things happen for other people."
"He's an encourager," Curry continued. "He's good at building others up and does what he can to help encourage and motivate those around him."

In the face of conflict that's been brewing for years, an Israeli woman and a Palestinian family forged a life-long bond after she donated a kidney to their 3-year-old son.
Idit Harel Segal wanted to do "something big" to celebrate her 50th birthday, and decided to donate a kidney based on advice from her Holocaust survivor grandfather to live meaningfully, she told the Associated Press and The Times of Israel.
Segal, a mother of three, turned to Matnat Chaim, a group connecting donors and recipients, and was soon paired with her match: a 3-year-old Palestinian boy from the Gaza Strip who'd been on dialysis his whole life thanks to a congenital kidney defect, the outlets reported.
Despite years of violent turmoil between Israel and Palestine, Segal was not fazed by the revelation.

"From my perspective, my donation was personal and not political," she told The Times of Israel. "And the news of who was receiving the kidney did not make me regret it or reconsider it even for a minute. I felt that this is what was meant to happen, and not a day goes by that I'm not happy about saving the life of that sweet child."
Still, her family was not exactly on board, even before they found out who her recipient would be — a part of the story she kept quiet for several months.
"My family was really against it. Everyone was against it," Segal told the AP. "My husband, my sister, her husband. And the one who supported me the least was my father. They were afraid… I told myself if the reaction to the kidney donation is so harsh, [then] obviously the fact that a Palestinian boy is getting it will make it even harder."

Israel has "maintained a tight blockade over Gaza since Hamas, an Islamic militant group that opposes Israel's existence, seized control of the area in 2007," according to the AP.
This past spring saw the worst escalation of violence between Israel and Palestinians since 2014. In May, Hamas fired hundreds of rockets into Israel in what it claimed was a response to this violence and ongoing tensions in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem.

In retaliation, Israel, which is much more militarily advanced, carried out at least 130 strikes on Gaza. Sixty-five Palestinians have reportedly been killed, including 16 children. The country says it takes steps to minimize and avoid civilian deaths.
Though few Gazans are allowed entry into Israel due to the political strife, the country does allow a few medical patients in need of serious treatment in, according to the AP.
For Segal, the situation was a sensitive topic, as she and her family have lost three relatives to Palestinian attacks, including her father's parents, the outlet reported.
Even so, she said her family eventually came around to offer their support, and her father — to whom she had not been speaking since announcing she would donate the kidney — called her the night before her surgery.

Upon learning the recipient would be a Palestinian boy, he responded, "Well he needs life, also," Segal told the AP.
The transplant took place on June 16, and Segal was able to visit the boy the night before his surgery with a special letter she'd written for him, she told the outlet.
Upon visiting the hospital, the boy's family told her their home in Gaza had been destroyed in a recent Israeli airstrike, the Times of Israel reported. Still, the family was able to share special moments with Segal that transcended their nationalities, like singing the boy to sleep in the hospital together.

The family, who did not want to be identified "due to the sensitivities over cooperating with Israelis," are still in touch with Segal, a kindergarten teacher, according to the AP.
For Segal, the successful donation and transplant accomplished her goal and then some — in order to boost the boy to the top of the donor list, his father donated a kidney of his own to a 25-year-old Israeli mother of two, Matnat Chaim chief executive Sharona Sherman told the AP.
"Deep inside I know I did something good," Segal told the outlet in a video. "And it's true it will not solve Israel-Palestinian relations, but it's another small thing."

The Good News - Page 2 Empty Re: The Good News

Post by carolhathaway Thu 14 Oct 2021, 22:32

Last Sunday, a family with three kids from Berlin went hiking in the mountains between Germany and Czech Republic while on holidays. The kids were running around, playing hide and seek in a dark wood - and they all got lost. After a whild, the two younger kids were found while the eldest, an eight-year old girl, was still missing.

1,400 people - policemen, firemen, soldiers and rangers from both countries were looking for her, supported by rescue dogs and drones with IR cameras. Since it was really cold at night and she wasn't found after 24 hours, nearly everybody feared she could have died. On Tuesday, after about 48 hours (and two bitter cold nights), a eanger found her in the forests, diagnosed with hypothermia but not injured. And after having speng one night in hospital, she was able to go home with her family.

Since medias had reported about her disappearance and how they tried to find her, I was just happy that she survived.

All Romay Davis wanted in her early 20s was to follow her five brothers into the U.S. military, leave the rural Virginia home she shared with her supportive parents and chase a little adventure along the way.
She found it while making history in the first all-female, all-women-of-color unit to serve in the U.S. Army in World War II. Now, at age 102, as the oldest of six survivors of the groundbreaking 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, she's a new recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor Congress can bestow.
"I was surprised," Davis tells PEOPLE of learning about the award. "I'm still surprised, very much so because I didn't do anything out of the ordinary, except go in the military."
She received her citation, which was approved by President Joe Biden in March for all 855 members of the unit, on Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala., from Col. Eries L.G. Mentzer, the first Black woman to command Maxwell Air Force Base.

The presentation also marked the 74th anniversary of Executive Order 9981, which integrated the Armed Forces in 1948, several years after Davis enlisted.
Davis knew she was bound for a female-only unit in Europe but downplayed its significance, then and now. "What difference does it make?" she remembers thinking. "We do work just like anybody else. We learn, like anyone else."
The base commander countered Davis' humble portrayal.

"It was not easy for Rosa Parks," Col. Mentzer tell PEOPLE. "It wasn't easy for Romay Davis. Frankly, my life and my career have not been easy. There's a constant pressure to be perfect, especially when you're the 'first' at something. You want to make sure that the work you're doing doesn't close the door for others, to give any reason to say, 'Well, look, we tried it once.'"

"Despite what she was handed, despite the fact that there were so many barriers for her service, she persevered and she pushed to allow more freedom for people to serve our nation in the Armed Forces," she continues.
"I would not be here without Romay Davis," Col. Mentzer adds.

Davis later worked for 30 years as a children's fashion designer, earned a Taekwondo black belt in her 70s and then spent two decades in her 80s and 90s stocking shelves for the Winn-Dixie grocery chain in Montgomery. She also paints and writes poetry.

All these decades later, Davis credits her military service for jump-starting her full life.
"I had traveled and grown up with five boys, and my mother and father were very active people," she says. "So I was in the active group, ready to do whatever was chosen for me to do."
Among those brothers who enlisted ahead of her, Davis says two of them went into the Marines, one became a sailor, one worked as an aircraft airman and one was stationed in Hawaii with the U.S.O.
"My main reason for enlisting was my last brother," she says. "When my baby brother left, I thought about it a few days, and I thought about my mom and pop being left by themselves."
"But I said, 'They could make it,' because they were younger and healthy and active, and I was also, and I wanted to be free to take the chance, to get the experience of being in a group and away from home."
"I talked it over with mom," she says. "She wasn't necessarily a homebody. She was into whatever was going on. She was a very forward-looking person. Thank goodness for that."

The female veterans of what became known as the "Six Triple Eight" served stateside and in Europe, says U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas, who sponsored the legislation awarding the medals.
"Though the odds were set against them, the women of the Six Triple Eight processed millions of letters and packages during their deployment in Europe, helping connect WWII soldiers with their loved ones back home — like my father and mother," Moran said in a news release.
After serving "two years, four months and three days, I think," Davis followed her time in the Women's Army Corps by relocating from her parents' home in King George County, Virginia, to New York City. An alum of New York University, she took up fashion because another career she coveted wasn't open to her.
"I wanted to be a doctor and I couldn't be at that time," she says. "I chose design secondly."

She landed in Montgomery, Ala., she says, after moving there with her husband, Jerry Davis, who was from the area. The two — both retired from military service — married after the war and were together about 47 years before he died in 1999. The couple did not have children.
In 2019, Winn-Dixie celebrated Davis' work for the grocery chain on her 100th birthday. "It's unreal," store manager Bobby Godwin told the Montgomery Advertiser upon the occasion. "She's doing more work than a 25-year-old."

The pandemic sent Davis home against her will. "I'm delicate and I catch anything that goes by me, but I've been very fortunate," she says. "I was very healthy, for one thing. I'm old. I've admitted that I'm old, but I never thought about it before. Mama never taught us about watching your birthdays."
Along with her citation — the actual medal will come later — on Tuesday Davis received a duplicate of the WWII uniform she wore, which was lost long ago. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden recently called to congratulate her. A representative of the Smithsonian Institution was on hand to document the ceremony.
"Think about Romay's service," says Col. Mentzer. "She served in a segregated unit. She proudly wore the uniform of her nation and went overseas fighting fascism, working to spread democracy around the world, when she and people like her were denied democracy in America."
"I just think about the burden that she and the women of that unit had to bear," she adds. "She worked in a rat-filled warehouse where they had to deal with sexism and racism in deplorable conditions. And yet they performed to such a high level of perfection that earned congressional medal recognition. That level of excellence is so inspiring."

Says Davis: "I've enjoyed my life."
But far from a retiring presence, she remains an advocate still aware of the need for change.
"Women are as capable, if I said that correctly, as men are in their chosen positions," she says. "So if you give them more chance — and Black women especially, because they haven't had the same opportunity — give them a chance and see what they can do. Ask them."

Elijah Muhammad made history as he accepted his diploma from Oklahoma City Community College on Saturday.

On Saturday, his family says he became the youngest Black student to graduate college with a degree in computer science and cybersecurity, according to ABC news affiliate KOCO-TV. When he enrolled at Oklahoma City Community College in August 2020, he made history as the youngest Black college student in the state, per local station KFOR.

"I didn't really understand the full impact of it until my dad fully explained it and was like, 'You're really doing this. You're the youngest to ever do it,'" Elijah told KOCO-TV.

The teen actually has four diplomas from the school to his name now, he told the outlet.

"He is the smartest person I know," sister Shania Muhammad, a 15-year-old college grad, told the outlet. "Regardless of if you're older or not, it's like I've never seen nothing like him."

Elijah previously told KFOR that the siblings are always rooting for each other. "We have a bunch of competitiveness. But she really helps me out with a lot of my studying," he said during an interview with the station.
