Re: What international Fame Really Means to Amal Clooney
The UN does seem to lack backbone. I don't understand the politics of their actions/inactions at times. Why should it be so difficult to make the case for genocide and defending the Yazidis case with so much evidence in hand?
Thanks for the video and article links!

Re: What international Fame Really Means to Amal Clooney
Exactly, Donnamarie
Amal is actually at the UN today to discuss the Yazidi and the genocide charges.....Pretty sure she'll be asking precisely the same thing.BBC News at Six yesterday has the interview and a visit to SW Germany by a reporter to see the refugees. and at the beginning of the news there is footage of Amal with Fiona Bruce walking through the house to her study. Briefly!

Re: What international Fame Really Means to Amal Clooney
Maybe it's because if they admit that ISIS is committing genocide they'll have to do something about it, and they don't know what to do - any more than anyone else does - short of bombing them into oblivion, which hasn't worked so far.Donnamarie wrote:The UN does seem to lack backbone. Very true, Lizzy.
Astonishing really that no-one has done anything at all about this until now given how very dangerous ISIS/Daesh in almost every corner of the world.
It takes a woman...............(IWD)

Amal Clooney Shows Baby Bump in What Could be the Ultimate International Women's Day Poster

Frame it: Amal Clooney may have just won International Woman's Day.
The pregnant British human rights lawyer and wife of George Clooney was spotted leaving the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City Wednesday, showcasing her baby bump in a dark grey pencil skirt, short cropped blazer and grey and black striped pumps. A source told E! News she visited the U.N. to attend the high-level "The Fight against Impunity for Atrocities: Bringing Da'esh to Justice" event, which was co-organized by the Permanent Missions of Belgium, Canada, Germany, Iraq and the United Kingdom and the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.
Amal is pregnant with twins, her and husband George Clooney's first children. They are expecting a boy and a girl in June.

Amal had also visited the U.N. in September, when she spoke at the General Assembly about women from the persecuted Yazidi minority group who survived being raped and enslaved by ISIS terrorists and criticizing the U.N. for failing to help protect their people from the group and bring their men to justice for genocide and other crimes. Amal wants ISIS to be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court.
One of the lawyer's clients is Nobel Peace Prize nominee Nadia Murad Basee Taha, one ISIS' victims. She also spoke at the U.N. with Amal in September. They were invited when Taha was appointed a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador.
"I am ashamed as a supporter of the United Nations that states are failing to prevent or even punish genocide because they find that their own interests get in the way," Amal said in her speech. "I am ashamed as a lawyer that there is no justice being done and barely a complaint being made about it. I am ashamed as a woman that girls like Nadia could have their bodies sold and used as battlefields. I am ashamed as a human being that we ignore their cries for help."
"I am proud to sit beside this young woman whose strength and leadership astounds me,. She has defied all the labels that life has given her: orphan, rape victim, slave, refugee. She has instead created new ones. Survivor, Yazidi leader, women's advocate. Nobel Peace Prize nominee. And now, as of today, Goodwill ambassador," Amal said. "I am proud to know you Nadia, and I am sorry that we have failed you."
Being married to one of the most famous celebs in the world and one of Hollywood's former most popular bachelors has led the public to learn more about Amal's work. Now pregnant, she draws even more attention.
"I think if there are more people who now understand what's happening about the Yazidis and ISIS, and if there can be some action that results from that, that can help those clients, then I think it's a really good thing to give that case the extra publicity that it may get," Amal recently told BBC News.

Re: What international Fame Really Means to Amal Clooney
I think that it's really tough to find an effective way to fight ISIS, and the UN doesn't seem to have found out how der: Bombing doesn't end them, in fact, it brought back Assad; About two years ago, everybody thought that it's necessary to disempower him, and since Russia joined the war, it's suddenly: "Assad is the lesser evil, we need him to stabilize the country!"
But as long as they are able to recruit young people from all countries, religions and social classes, they have to find another way.
I think that George's idea concerning Sudan, is the right way: Follow the money and block their accounts. Make their financial backers and the banks they use banks responsible.

Amal Clooney is continuing to speak out against ISIS — and she’ll be back on the world stage this week, appearing at the United Nations.
The human rights attorney and wife of George Clooney is calling for the UN to investigate allegations of genocide against the terrorist group. On Tuesday, she discussed the decision with Fiona Bruce on BBC News, which showed a haunting reel of ISIS atrocities before the beginning of the interview.
“I’ve been to refuges in Germany like the one you showed in your piece and I have interviewed former child soldiers and young girls who were raped and enslaved by ISIS,” Clooney told Bruce.
“It’s been the most harrowing testimony I’ve ever heard. We know that it’s genocide. The UN has said so. In other words: ISIS is trying to destroy them as a group and we are allowing it to happen without actually calling ISIS to account,” she added.
One of the first steps to holding ISIS responsible, Clooney explained, is to preserve evidence of the atrocities on the ground. Unfortunately, that evidence is hard to collect, and it’s disappearing fast. “There are mass graves that are being discovered; just a few days ago in Mosul a huge mass grave that’s thought to have 4,000 bodies in it was discovered and there’s other types of evidence as well,” she explained.

“ISIS is actually a big bureaucracy, believe it or not, and they are leaving behind documents,” she added. “You need to collect DNA, you need to collect phone records. And none of that is being done at the moment.”
Clooney’s clients include Nadia Murad, a young Iraqi woman from the Yazidi minority group who survived ISIS human trafficking and became a Nobel Peace Prize-nominated activist and UN Goodwill Ambassador.
When she addresses the UN this week, Clooney said she will ask representatives why action has not been taken. “This is exactly the question that I’ll be posing to member states and [I’m] going to ask them: ‘Are the crimes not serious enough for you to investigate?’ Well, that can’t be it. This is genocide. ‘Do you think there is no evidence for you to collect?’ That’s not right either. There are mass graves whose locations are known. You can start there and there’s plenty of other evidence to collect.”

Clooney, who’s pregnant with twins, also discussed how George supports her work and the fame he brings to their marriage. “There’s lots of my work that takes place behind closed doors that is not ever seen,” she said. “I think if there are more people who now understand what’s happening about the Yazidis and ISIS, and if there can be some action that results from that, that can help those clients, then I think that it’s a really good thing to give that case the extra publicity that it may get.”
However, she noted, “If you don’t have a good case and you don’t have a good message, then shining a light on it is not going to get you very far.”
