That's nice Joanna. I don't know how you post so many wonderful photos etc. Did you all already celebrate Mom's Day?

Kind of sad day for me as I lost my Mom in 2006 but it's gotten easier with time.

Well done to Angelina Jolie for coming out with the information that she's had preventative mastectomy. flower

Angelina Jolie has double mastectomy to reduce risk of breast cancer
Actor reveals she has had mastectomy because of gene defect that increases risk of developing disease that killed her mother

Angelina Jolie has revealed she has had a preventive double mastectomy to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer, and has gone public with the news to raise awareness.

The actor has a defective gene, BRCA1, which significantly increases her risk of developing breast cancer, the disease that killed her mother at the age of 56, she writes in the New York Times.

Jolie says she chose not to keep the decision private in the hope that other women would get gene-tested. "Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk," she says.

Women with a defect in BRCA1 have on average a 65% risk of developing breast cancer. Jolie says her doctors told her that her risk was 87% and that surgery had reduced it to 5%. The defect also increases the risk of ovarian cancer, which Jolie says doctors estimate is 50% for her.

The 37-year-old, who has six children – three by Brad Pitt and three adopted – finished three months of medical procedures on 27 April. She says she first had "nipple delay" to maximise the chances of saving her nipples, before breast tissue removal and, nine weeks later, reconstruction. Pitt was by her side for "every minute of the surgeries", she said.

Jolie said her children had often asked if she might get the illness that killed her mother, Marcheline Bertrand. She says now: "I can tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.

"It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that's it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was."

Jolie adds: "I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices."

A very difficult decision for her although the cynical side of me thinks that at least she could afford the very best plastic surgeons for reconstructive surgery.

I was a bit cynical too re her ability to afford the best, she's lucky in a lot of ways / if it means more women have that blood or gene test done, well good on her.

I think anyone with that high a risk of dying at an early age from the inherited cancer gene would just be so glad to get rid of the offending body parts and not worry about looks.
I know I would anyway. Prosthetics are very good these days.

This just makes her stock rise in my eyes, as far as how I view her. Was never a fan of hers, she just struck me as such an ice princess, but this puts her in a more vulnerable and human light for me. I applaud that she went public with it, using her fame to raise awareness of a critical issue for women. And I agree it's a brave thing to do.

We've been hearing on the radio from a lady here in UK who fought the medics to have it done 20 years ago before the gene was discovered. It was so prevalent in her family she just believed it to be hereditary, as it's now proved to be.
It's a huge news item and hopefully will inspire other vulnerable ladies
to get tested.
I believe breast reconstruction is a service offered on our NHS following preventative mastectomy, but I haven't researched that thoroughly.

Not to change the subject, but for the few of you on here who might miss me, I'm having eye surgery tomorrow and will be prohibited by my surgeon from computer use for at least a week. Tragic, isn't it?

I know, you folks must be thinking I'm a real medical mess - hip surgery, cataract surgery, now this. Well, let's just say I'm getting stuff repaired that I've put off for awhile. This surgery is to remove a godzilla of a 'floater' that looks like a big wad of mucous in my right eye. Normally they don't operate on floaters, but this one really obstructs my vision.

So don't worry when you don't see my profoundly witty and jaw droppingly insightful postings (a model of humility, aren't I! ha! Rolling Eyes ). I'll be back soon enough........much to the chagrin of some.

Lakin I hope the surgery goes well for you and I'll hold you in pray for a complete recovery. See you when you get back! flower

On topic: I'm glad that Angie had the surgery. Her life and the quality of that life is more important than any body part. And I agree that she can and probably will have corrective surgery, which is what any of us would do. But she put her health first and bravely put out the information as a public service message to other women who might be afraid or hesitate to be proactive and that's a great thing for her to do. And props for Brad being the compassionate person I always figured he was to stand by her and help her through this with grace. Bravo to them both.

Terrorist attack? With machetes? What is going on in the world?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22630303

A man has been killed in a machete attack and his two assailants shot by police in Woolwich, south-east London.

The government is reported to be treating the assault as a suspected terrorist incident and the prime minister said it was "truly shocking".

Home Secretary Theresa May has summoned a meeting of the government's emergency response committee Cobra.

Local MP Nick Raynsford said the dead man was a soldier at Woolwich barracks but this has not been confirmed.

They dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road and left his body there”

James
Eyewitness
Mrs May said she had been briefed by the director general of Security Service MI5, Andrew Parker, and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe on the "sickening and barbaric" attack.

"It has been confirmed to me that a man has been brutally murdered," she said. "Two other men were shot by armed police and they are currently receiving treatment for their injuries."

One witness, identified only as James, said two men had attacked another man, aged about 20, who was wearing a T-shirt of military charity Help for Heroes.

"These two guys were crazed. They were just animals. They dragged him from the pavement and dumped his body in the middle of the road and left his body there," he told LBC radio.

He said after the "horrendous" attack, the two men, who were also in their 20s, stood around, waving knives and a gun, and asked people to take pictures of them "as if they wanted to be on TV or something".

"They were oblivious to anything, they were more worried about having their photo taken, running up and down the road," he said.

The incident took place before many eyewitnesses
Thomas, a witness who contacted the BBC, said: "I got there minutes after it happened because you could hear gunshots from Woolwich High Street.

"Basically two men carried out an axe attack on a young army cadet walking along the street, by the looks of things the police responded and then shot them in front of the public, at the same time I couldn't really tell if the cadet was fatally or not hurt as police were crowded around him."

Downing Street said Prime Minister David Cameron, who was planning to stay in Paris overnight after meeting the French president, would be returning to the UK tonight.

Whitehall sources have told the BBC it is "a fair supposition" that the incident was a terrorist incident but police have not commented publicly on the suggestion.

BBC political editor Nick Robinson said the police view is that the attack may have been filmed and footage may exist.

According to senior Whitehall sources the people carrying out the attack were heard to say Allahu Akbar [God is Great], said our political editor.

On Twitter, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson described the attack as a "sickening deluded and unforgivable act of violence".

School lock-down
Mr Raynsford, the Woolwich and Greenwich MP, said he had spoken to local police and understood a number of weapons had been seized at the scene including a gun, knives, and a machete.

Scotland Yard said the initial attack happened in John Wilson Street, the A205, at 14:20 BST.

Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford said the two attackers were then shot by armed officers.

He said: "Police were called to reports of an assault... where one man was being assaulted by two other men. A number of weapons were reportedly being used in the attack, and this included reports of a firearm.

Head teacher David Dixon describes seeing a body in the street and hearing gunshots
"Officers including local Greenwich officers arrived at the scene, and shortly after firearms officers arrived on the scene.

"On their arrival at the scene they found a man, who was later pronounced dead....

"Two men, who we believe from early reports to have been carrying weapons, were shot by police. They have both been taken to separate London hospitals. They are receiving treatment for their injuries.

"I can understand that this incident will cause community concerns and I would like to reiterate that we are investigating the circumstances."

Meanwhile, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) confirmed it had been informed.

In a statement, the IPCC said: "Investigators have been deployed to the scene and to the post-incident process."

London Ambulance Service confirmed one man had been found dead at the scene.

It said two men had been taken to hospital - one by air ambulance - and one of them was a serious condition.

David Dixon, a local head teacher, told the BBC News Channel he walked out of the school gates and saw a body lying in the road a short distance away.

He then heard gunshots and instructed staff to lock all the gates of his school.

The air ambulance landed in the playground and most of the children have now gone home, he said.

It's an appalling murder of a young soldier in front of witnesses.
I feel deep sympathy not only for the young man and his family but for the medical staff having to treat the murderers.
How one earth do they cope with that ?

I guess they just have to be professional about it, but yep, glad it isn't me.

the parents and family of the young man that was slain must be heartbroken, not only about his death, but about the entire brutatlity of it. My heart goes out to them.

So I was thinking about the Cookie Aisle today and if anyone is in touch with new kid tell her the one thing I miss about that forum is the live chats.

New kid and I would get on there and type hysterical insults back and forth so quickly that some of the chat members couldn't keep up. Was thinking about how funny that was.

There would be several conversations going at once and you had to be quick to keep up. Some of the funniest stuff came out of those chats.

So tell her I said hi if anyone is in touch with her. Thx.
