LORI LOUGHLIN AND HUSBAND FACE NEW MONEY LAUNDERING CHARGE IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS CHEATING SCANDAL

Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband pleaded not guilty Monday to two charges against them in the college admissions cheating scandal — and a legal source close to the couple tells PEOPLE that having rejected an offer for a deal from prosecutors, their plea was “the only choice they’ve got.”
“She probably should have taken the deal, but at the time, she didn’t really realize how serious the charges were,” the source tells PEOPLE.
“More than that, I think she and her lawyers underestimated how motivated the prosecution was. So she didn’t plead, and then they hit her with another charge. Now she’s willing to negotiate, but the prosecution says that the deal is off the table. So the only choice they’ve got is to plead not guilty. That’s all they can do.”
The source confirms to PEOPLE that Loughlin and husband J. Mossimo Giannulli pleaded not guilty to both charges they face: mail fraud and money laundering conspiracy. If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison for each charge.

On March 12, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts announced that it had charged 50 people, including Loughlin and fellow actress Felicity Huffman, in the cheating scandal. The two actresses, along with coaches, admissions counselors and parents were accused of such alleged crimes as falsifying SAT scores and lying about the athletic skills of their children.

Huffman has agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, saying, “I am in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what I have done, I accept full responsibility for my actions and will accept the consequences that stem from those actions.”

Loughlin, meanwhile, allegedly wanted her daughters to get into the University of Southern California so badly that she and Giannulli paid approximately $500,000 in bribes to falsely designate their daughters as recruits to the USC crew team — despite the fact that they did not participate in crew.
Loughlin and Ginnulli have hired a team of high-profile attorneys to represent them in the case.
“They decided to roll the dice,” the legal source told PEOPLE last week about their decision to reject the plea deal, “and it may have been a bad gamble. Now they’re in worse shape than before.”
“[The prosecutors] are saying that the only way anyone’s going to escape jail time is if they go to trial and are found not guilty,” the source told PEOPLE. “But they’re saying the they have such meticulous evidence that it would be foolish to take that risk.”
Reps for Loughlin and Giannulli have not returned PEOPLE’s calls for comment.

 • This was the first time Trump tweeted about Sanders since he entered the race in February

 • Fox News' Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum hosted Sanders in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

President Donald Trump took a hit at 'crazy Bernie' Sanders for touting universal healthcare and tax hikes at a Fox News town hall Monday night.
Trump said the the audience and co-host Bret Baier were humoring the independent senator by being 'smiley and nice' during the town hall.
'So weird to watch Crazy Bernie on @FoxNews. Not surprisingly, @BretBaier and the 'audience' was so smiley and nice. Very strange, and now we have @donnabrazile?' Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.
Sanders is the Democratic presidential front-runner, and he engaged in a town hall with two Fox News hosts, Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, Monday night.

Trump has not tweeted about Sanders since February 20, when he congratulated him for entering the presidential race in his second consecutive bid for the Democratic nomination.
During the hour-long town hall on Monday, which was held in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Sanders faced off with the hosts about who would pay for a universal healthcare system.

Trump dubbed Sen. Bernie Sanders as 'Crazy Bernie' and slammed the audience from Monday's two hall, saying they were too 'smiley and nice' to the Democratic Socialist

The last time Trump tweeted about Sanders was in February when he announced he was entering the Democratic primary race
The rust-belt audience was surprisingly receptive to Sanders' socialist healthcare proposal.
'Senator, this audience has a lot of Democrats in it. It has Republicans, independents, Democratic Socialists, conservatives. I want to ask the audience a question, if you could raise your hand here, a show of hands of how many people get their insurance from work, private insurance, right now?' Baier asked the audience.
More than half the audience for Fox's town hall raised their hand in the impromptu poll.
'OK. Of those, how many are willing to transition to what the senator says, a government-run system?' Baier asked, which was met with even more hands raising and cheers from the audience.

Sanders, who represents Vermont in the Senate, identifies as a Democratic Socialist and says healthcare is a human right and should be free.
Baier's co-host, Martha MacCallum, asked how Sanders where the money would come from for a government-run healthcare system.
'I think everybody is in agreement that healthcare needs to be fixed in this country,' MacCallum said. 'You're going to pay one way or the other,' MacCallum rebutted. 'Whether it's in your income tax or your payroll tax.'
'Health care is not free,' Sanders conceded.
'Of course not, you just said it's going to be free for everyone.' MacCallum shot back.
'It's going to be free of the point of when you use it, OK? Why are you so shocked by this?' Sanders asked. 'Somebody is going to pay.'

Sanders is the 2020 front-runner among the 18 Democratic competing for the party's nomination
'Look, health care costs money,' Sanders continued. 'Every other country, or virtually every country, does it in the same way we do education for our kids. OK, when a kid walks into school, the kid doesn't have to take out a credit card, right? It's paid for out of public funds. That's what most countries do… Are people going to pay more in taxes? Yes. But at the end of the day, the overwhelming majority of people are going to end up paying less for health care because they're not paying premiums, copayments, and deductibles.'
Sanders is the only Democratic candidate that has had a town hall with Fox News in the 2020 cycle so far.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said that during the 2020 election cycle none of the Democratic debates would be hosted by Fox News.
'I believe that a key pathway to victory is to continue to expand our electorate and reach all voters,' Perez said in a statement in March. 'That is why I have made it a priority to talk to a broad array of potential media partners, including Fox News.'

Perez, however, said that recent reporting regarding President Donald Trump and his administration's relationship with Fox News, led him to reconsidering pairing with the network for the debates.
'[T]he network is not in a position to host a fair and neutral debate for our candidates,' Perez said at the time. 'Therefore, FOX News will not serve as a media partner for the 2020 Democratic primary debates.'
Sanders is leading in polling and fundraising among Democrats vying for the party's nomination.
Among Democratic primary voters, 29 per cent say they support Sanders, and his campaign raised more than $18 million in the first quarter of 2019.

A Wisconsin gym teacher has been placed on indefinite leave amid claims that she separated students in one class by race and assigned the black children to research games that enslaved children played.
The teacher at Shorewood Intermediate School was instructing seventh-graders about games from around the world on April 1 when she allegedly gave the assignment to the black students.
Shorewood School District Superintendent Bryan Davis sent a letter to parents outlining what happened and said that they were investigating the incident. He didn't name the teacher.

MaHailey Stephens (pictured) said she was separated from her other classmates and told by her gym teacher, who has been placed on leave, to research games that enslaved children played
'We take these allegations extremely serious,' Davis wrote. 'Throughout this situation, student safety and well-being have been our top priority.'

One of the African American students, MaHailey Stephens, told Fox6 News that she and her classmates were separated into groups based on race and asked to research games from their cultures.
'I went to my mom, I'm like, "mom, what are slave games?'". 'She told us to all go get into our groups and then she told us that she would help us research slave games,' said Stephens.

Her mother, Dr. Reshunda Stephens, told the station that there was a similar incident involving the same teacher with her other daughter, last year.
'This child was asked to be part of the colored club. How many more times do people have to feel uncomfortable until change happens?.
She added: 'We have to work together, have those courageous conversations and provide support not only for the adults but most importantly for our children because it's not fair for our children to have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.'

The Milwaukee Independent reported that some students were asked to play dodge ball, while others said they were paired up by race and told to reenact games enslaved children would have played on a Southern plantation before the Civil War.
One student's father told the publication: 'She came home and she told me she had to reconstruct games played during slavery.
'Yeah, I was completely shocked. I knew it was a problem immediately when she said she was uncomfortable,' he added.

Trump campaign uses Facebook to target 65 and older voters with anti-immigration ads and is barely spending anything to reach young voters, new figures reveal

 • President Trump is spending almost half of his Facebook campaign money on targeting elderly

 • He is spending less than 5 per cent on the youngest demographic, 18-35

 • About half the 44 per cent in ads targeting the elderly focus on illegal immigration and use nativist language

 • Bernie Sanders, 77, is spending 65 per cent of his Facebook advertising money on 18-35 year-olds

President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign is spending almost half its Facebook advertising budget to target voters over 65 years old.
While his campaign is focusing 44 per cent of its budget on targeting elderly voters, the top 12 Democratic candidates of the 18 already running are only spending 27 per cent on the same demographic, according to data collected by Bully Pulpit Interactive.
Only 4 per cent of Trump’s Facebook budget is being allotted to targeting 18-35 year-olds.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is the front-runner in the Democratic primary field and the oldest person running for president in 2020, is only spending 9 per cent of his Facebook budget on voters 65 and older.

Instead, Trump's 2020 reelection campaign is focusing 44 per cent of its advertising budget on the elderly, aged 65 and older. The average of the top 12 Democrats running in 2020 are spending only 27 per cent of their budget on that demographic

Sanders, 77, is spending 65 per cent of the budget on the youngest demographic.
Both Democrats and Trump are spending roughly the same amount of ad money on the middle-aged demographics of 34-65.
Of the ads Trump’s reelection campaign is putting out to target elderly Facebook users, many focus on immigration.
Recently Trump has upped his rhetoric against illegal immigration, claiming that he would begin directing the Department of Homeland Security to bus illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities.
There is nativist language – wording that relates to supporting policies that protect native-born U.S. citizens – in 54 per cent of the ads Trump put out regarding immigration, the study reveals.
BPI was able to analyze the data after Facebook opened up its advertising archive application programming interface for the first time in March. This gives insights to campaigns’ targeting ad strategies.
Trump is far ahead of the curve in fundraising compared to Democratic candidates. He raised more than $30 million in the first quarter of 2019.
Sanders was the highest earner among Democratic candidates with more than $20 million in the first quarter of this year, and Warren in second with $16.5 million.
Several Democratic contenders earned way below par with between $1 and $2 million.

President Donald Trump said he would not apologize to Rep. Ilhan Omar for the criticism he's heaped on her after her 9/11 comments, saying she's 'been very disrespectful to this country,' as Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused him of using the terror attacks as a 'political tool.'
'No not at all,' the president said when asked if he had any second thoughts about a video he tweeted that the Minnesota Democrat claimed increased death threats on her life.
'Look, she's been very disrespectful to this country. She's been very disrespectful, frankly, to Israel. She is somebody that doesn't really understand life. Real life, what it's all about,' he told KSTP, a Minneapolis TV station, during his visit to Minnesota on Monday.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused him of using the terror attacks as a 'political tool'

'It's unfortunate. She's got a way about her that's very, very bad, I think, for our country. I think she's extremely unpatriotic and extremely disrespectful to our country,' he added.
Pelosi, meanwhile, doubled down on her criticism of Trump on Tuesday, charging him with playing politics with a national tragedy.
'I criticized the president for using video of 9/11 as a political tool. I think he was wrong to do that,' she told CNN. 'What the president did was not right.'
Omar, a 36-year-old freshman Democrat and mother of three, has been a subject of grief for Democrats and a target for Republicans after a series of controversies. First there were her statements that were taken as anti-Semitic and then there was her description of the September 11 terrorist attacks as 'some people did something.'
She charged the president's tweets with increasing death threats on her life, specifically a video he sent out on Friday.
'Since the president's tweet Friday evening, I have experienced an increase in direct threats on my life – many directly referencing or replying to the President's video,' Omar said in a statement Sunday.
'Violent rhetoric and all forms of hate speech have no place in our society, much less from our country's Commander in Chief. We are all Americans. This is endangering lives. It has to stop,' she said.

The video in question was pinned to the top of Trump's Twitter page but is now just in its regular spot in his feed.
'WE WILL NEVER FORGET' he tweeted on Friday night, accompanied by a 43 second video that showed Omar's comment during a speech to the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), interspersed with footage from September 11, 2001.
In her full speech to CAIR last month - the footage surfaced last week - Omar said: 'Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and frankly, I'm tired of it and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it.
'CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something, and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.'
Since the controversial comments resurfaced, Omar has defended what she said, using an example of George W. Bush making similar remarks in the wake of the tragedy and marking the difference in reaction.
Omar has said the furor surrounding the comments - which she believes were taken out of context - stem from the fact that she is Muslim, and not white.
'Was Bush downplaying the terrorist attack? What if he was a Muslim,' she asked on Twitter.

Democrats rushed to defend the freshman lawmaker, who made history last year when Minnesotans elected her to Congress. She is one of two Muslim women serving in the legislative body.
But some liberals have questioned whether or not Pelosi has done enough to defend Omar.
'They put us in photos when they want to show our party is diverse. However, when we ask to be at the table, or speak up about issues that impact who we are, what we fight for & why we ran in the first place, we are ignored. To truly honor our diversity is to never silence us,' freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the only other Muslim woman in Congress, tweeted on Saturday, in reference to another tweet complaining the party leadership was not supportive.
Pelosi told CNN she has not had a chance to talk to Omar because she's traveling. She's on a visit to the United Kingdom with other lawmakers.
'I haven't had a chance to speak with her I'm traveling,' she said.
The speaker on Sunday called on President Trump to remove the video criticizing Omar from his Twitter feed.
'The President's words weigh a ton, and his hateful and inflammatory rhetoric creates real danger. President Trump must take down his disrespectful and dangerous video,' Pelosi said in a statement from London.
She also said she's asked Capitol Police to investigate any threats to the freshman Democrat from Minnesota.
'Following the President's tweet, I spoke with the Sergeant-at-Arms to ensure that Capitol Police are conducting a security assessment to safeguard Congresswoman Omar, her family and her staff. They will continue to monitor and address the threats she faces,' Pelosi said.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (right) with Rep. Rashida Tlaib (left), who is one of the liberal left questioning if enough was done to protect the freshman lawmaker
Omar divided Democrats during her last controversy starting with her claim, later retracted, that moneyed Jews buy the support of U.S. lawmakers with a strategy that's 'all about the Benjamins baby.'
Then she reignited the controversy again when she said supporters of Israel were pushing for U.S. politicians to declare 'allegiance' to that nation.
A battle broke out between the older, powerful, more moderate Jewish members of Congress who accused Omar of anti-Semitism and the younger, progressive members who have stormed the House floor after the 2018 election and defended Omar's right to speak.
But all Omar's controversies have had one thing in common: they have brought the wrath of Republicans on to the Democrats.
Pelosi's call came after White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Sunday President Trump wishes 'no ill will' against Omar but added he is right to call out her comments on the September 11th attacks.
'Certainly the president is wishing no ill will, and certainly not violence towards anyone but the president is absolutely and should be calling out the congresswoman for her not only one time but history of anti-Semitic comments,' Sanders said on ABC's 'This Week.'

Trump's Attorney General Barr BLOCKS ruling allowing asylum seekers to ask for bond: Move means thousands of immigrants could face YEARS in detention before their cases are heard

 • Previous decision had allowed some immigrants to ask for bond from a judge

 • Barr's ruling now means they could be in detention for months or years

 • Trump's new AG's first ruling on immigration is in line with the administration

 • White House has moved to clamp down on the asylum process for thousands

The U.S. Attorney General on Tuesday struck down a decision that had allowed some asylum seekers to ask for bond in front of an immigration judge, in a ruling that expands indefinite detention for some migrants who must wait months or years for their cases to be heard.
The first immigration court ruling from President Donald Trump's newly appointed Attorney General William Barr is in keeping with the administration's moves to clamp down on the asylum process as tens of thousands of mostly Central Americans cross into the United States asking for refuge.
U.S. immigration courts are overseen by the Justice Department and the Attorney General can rule in cases to set legal precedent.
Barr's ruling is the latest instance of the Trump administration taking a hard line on immigration. This year the administration implemented a policy to return some asylum seekers to Mexico while their cases work their way through backlogged courts, a policy which has been challenged with a lawsuit.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr has struck down a decision that had allowed some asylum seekers to ask for bond in front of an immigration judge, in a ruling that expands indefinite detention for some migrants who must wait months or years for their cases to be heard
Several top officials at the Department of Homeland Security were forced out this month over Trump's frustrations with an influx of migrants seeking refuge at the U.S. southern border.

Barr's decision applies to migrants who crossed illegally into the United States.
Typically, those migrants are placed in 'expedited removal' proceedings - a faster form of deportation reserved for people who illegally entered the country within the last two weeks and are detained within 100 miles (160 km) of a land border. Migrants who present themselves at ports of entry and ask for asylum are not eligible for bond.

But before Barr's ruling, those who had crossed the border between official entry points and asked for asylum were eligible for bond, once they had proven to asylum officers they had a credible fear of persecution.
'I conclude that such aliens remain ineligible for bond, whether they are arriving at the border or are apprehended in the United States,' Barr wrote.
Barr said such people can be held in immigration detention until their cases conclude, or if the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) decides to release them by granting them 'parole.' DHS has the discretion to parole people who are not eligible for bond and frequently does so due to insufficient detention space or other humanitarian reasons.
Barr said he was delaying the effective date by 90 days 'so that DHS may conduct the necessary operational planning for additional detention and parole decisions.'
The decision's full impact is not yet clear, because it will in large part depend on DHS' ability to expand detention, said Steve Vladeck, a law professor at the University of Texas.
'The number of asylum seekers who will remain in potentially indefinite detention pending disposition of their cases will be almost entirely a question of DHS's detention capacity, and not whether the individual circumstances of individual cases warrant release or detention,' Vladeck said.
DHS officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the decision. The agency had written in a brief in the case arguing that eliminating bond hearings for the asylum seekers would have 'an immediate and significant impact on...detention operations.'

Barr's ruling is the latest instance of the Trump administration taking a hard line on immigration. A migrant from Honduras is seen in January passing a child over the border fence
In early March, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the DHS agency responsible for detaining and deporting immigrants in the country illegally, said the average daily population of immigrants in detention topped 46,000 for the 2019 fiscal year, the highest level since the agency was created in 2003.
Last year, Reuters reported that ICE had modified a tool officers have been using since 2013 when deciding whether an immigrant should be detained or released on bond, making the process more restrictive.
The decision will have no impact on unaccompanied migrant children, who are exempt from expedited removal. Most families are also paroled because of a lack of facilities to hold parents and children together.
Michael Tan, from the American Civil Liberties Union, said the rights group intended to sue the Trump administration over the decision, and immigrant advocates decried the decision.
Barr's decision came after former Attorney General Jeff Sessions decided to review the case in October. Sessions resigned from his position in November, leaving the case to Barr to decide.

The Trump 2020 campaign raked in $1million in donations after the Mueller report cleared him of colluding with Russia.

The campaign's COO Michael Glassner boasted about the boost on Friday, telling The New York Post that it represented a 250 percent increase in a day.

'The release of the full Mueller report directly led to the campaign raising more than $1 million.

'Relative to our recent daily average, the Mueller news drove a 250 percent increase in fundraising from grassroots donors,' he said.

Glassner added: 'Now it's time to investigate the investigators'. Now, the campaign has raised more than $40million.

It set an ambitious goal of raising $1billion by the time the polls open next year.

Trump's camp and the White House has reveled jubilantly in the report's release since it emerged on Thursday.

It found that despite relentless efforts from Russia, no none on the campaign team, transition team or in the White House colluded.

It also found no evidence that President Trump was guilty of obstruction of justice either.

Trump's campaign has raised more than $97million since 2017. After expenses, he has a little over $40million

Many have interpreted the glowing report as a huge endorsement for the president's re-election campaign.

Most of Trump's re-election campaign money came from the first quarter in 2019 when he raised $30million.

He had $10million to start the year off with.

The majority of the donations (nearly 99 percent) in Q1 were $200 or less.

Trump's fundraising far surpasses the other candidates who are running in 2020.

Bernie Sanders has the second highest amount with a little over $17million and John Delaney has $10million.  Elizabeth Warren has $11million.

With a net worth that hovers around $50 billion, Michael Bloomberg is by far the highest-rolling potential 2020 candidate, towering over President Donald Trump, and even self-declared person-of-means Howard Schultz. The former mayor hasn’t hesitated to throw his weight around, hinting that he might spend around $100 million to buy an advantage in the race, and shelling out donations to Democrats in the midterms. On Wednesday, however, Bloomberg upped the ante with a Politico report that he would spend at least $500 million in 2020 to defeat Trump—whether or not he runs.
Half a billion dollars is an ungodly amount by any metric. That’s roughly $175 million more than Trump spent in 2016, and outstrips the $129 million currently sitting in the president’s re-election war chest. And that might just be the beginning: “[$500 million] will get us through the first few months,” Bloomberg adviser Kevin Sheekey told Politico. “Mike spent $100 million in his last New York City election. And you can do the math as you think more broadly but New York City is 3 percent of the national population.”

As Democratic operatives briefed on Bloomberg’s operation told Politico, the billionaire philanthropist has earmarked said pile of money with two plans in mind. Plan A, obviously, is a presidential run as a Democrat. Plan B is bowing out of the race, but launching a massive parallel, data-driven campaign on behalf of the Democrats. According to internal polls, plan A could still pan out. “When people learn about his involvement in climate-change activism and gun safety, and when they learn that he’s not just a billionaire—but he came from a middle-class background and his dad never earned more than $6,000 a year, and you talk about the work he’s done on the ground and his philanthropy—Dem primary voters view him favorably,” said one Democrat familiar with the polling, adding that 80 percent of Democratic primary voters respond positively to Bloomberg’s biography.

Watch Now:

Steven Yeun’s Mysterious "Twilight Zone" Character

Still, the chances that Bloomberg wins the Democratic nomination are slim. His multi-year flirtation with running for president has never exactly caught the public’s imagination. Even now, after dropping $100 million on midterm races and continuing to fund gun-control efforts, Bloomberg is a dark horse: according to RealClearPolitics, he polls an average 4.5 percent among Democratic candidates, with Joe Biden, his primary rival for the centrist vote, field-stripping him by double digits. And that number is sure to fall as the field expands. In an election year in which Democrats are focused on identity politics and debating whether they should abolish billionaires altogether, a 76-year-old white man with an eleven-figure net worth isn’t exactly a shoe-in.
That leaves plan B, which seems carefully calculated to earn Bloomberg maximum goodwill. After promoting his favored policies in the Democratic primary—including strict gun-control measures—Bloomberg could easily pass his $500 million apparatus on to the nominee. That he’s publicizing plan B at all is an indication he’s eager to avoid the label of Schultz-style spoiler. “[His] priority No. 1 is Trump doesn’t get re-elected in 2020,” a Bloomberg insider told my colleague Chris Smith earlier this month. “Obviously, who else is running is a part of that. What the polls say is a part of that. But I wouldn’t say there’s one thing he’s looking for to make his decision.” Ultimately, Bloomberg’s massive fortune gives him a layer of insulation: even if he drops out, he’ll earn bragging rights for launching a full-scale attack against the most unpopular president in the modern era.

Trump tampered with witnesses. These Senate Republicans voted to oust Bill Clinton for doing just that

Trump-Russia investigation

Mueller’s report essentially accuses Trump of witness tampering – one of the offences Republicans impeached Clinton on. Here’s how they explained their votes

Robert Mueller’s report effectively accused Donald Trump of obstructing justice by witness tampering, one of the offences that led Republicans to impeach Bill Clinton 20 years ago.
Mueller’s team found Trump repeatedly made efforts to “encourage witnesses not to cooperate with the investigation” into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, the special counsel’s final report said.

Trump “made it known” that Paul Manafort, his former campaign chairman, could receive a pardon, according to Mueller. The president also urged Manafort and Michael Cohen, his legal fixer, not to “flip” and help Mueller’s inquiry.
In both these cases, Mueller found evidence that Trump acted with the intent of hindering the investigation – a necessary component for prosecuting witness tampering and obstruction of justice generally.
In addition, Mueller found that Trump asked senior advisers to tell Michael Flynn, his former national security adviser, to “stay strong”, and asked for two senior White House officials who were witnesses in the investigation to create fake records that would help protect him.

More than three pages describing Trump’s potentially obstructive actions towards yet another witness – seemingly his longtime friend and adviser Roger Stone – were completely redacted in Mueller’s report because they related to an “an ongoing matter”. Stone is being prosecuted on federal charges.

It is against federal law to tamper with a witness in an “official proceeding” such as Mueller’s investigation. But Mueller’s team declined to conclude whether or not Trump’s actions were criminal, in part because justice department policy holds that sitting presidents may not be indicted.
In a move that has attracted sharp criticism from Democrats, William Barr, the attorney general, decided that Trump had not committed obstruction.
Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives in December 1998 on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. The obstruction charge said he committed witness tampering by trying to “corruptly influence” the potential testimony of his secretary Betty Currie, and urged the former White House intern Monica Lewinsky to submit a false affidavit in a lawsuit against him.
Clinton was acquitted by the Senate. But 14 current Republican senators, some of whom were then serving in the House, voted either to impeach or convict Clinton on the obstruction charge. Some specifically cited his actions toward the witnesses when explaining their votes.

Following his deposition, the president had to decide what to do with his loyal secretary, Ms Betty Currie. And, again, the undisputed evidence shows that the president took the path of lies and deceit.
Contrary to federal obstruction of justice laws and contrary to judge Wright’s protective order … President Clinton left the deposition, went back to the White House and called Ms Currie at home to ask her to come to the White House the next day, which, I might add, was a Sunday.
… I am completely and utterly perplexed by those who argue that perjury and obstruction of justice are not high crimes and misdemeanors.

It is clear to me that the president committed serious crimes when he coached his secretary, Betty Currie, and when he misled his aides Sidney Blumenthal and John Podesta … These actions weren’t just outrageous and morally wrong. They were also illegal. They were a direct assault on the integrity of the judicial process.

The question I have that needs to desperately be answered by somebody is – when he approached Ms Currie to coach her in the fashion he did, is that a crime? Because I don’t want people at home to be confused that they can do these things, because if they do what the president did, in my opinion, they will wind up in jail.

 • Interview with CNN, 27 January 1999

[N]obody because of their position in society has the right to cheat and to get somebody to lie for them, even as the president. That means we’re not a nation of men or kings. We’re a nation of laws, and that’s what this case has always been about to me … He turned the judicial system upside down, every way but loose. He sent his friends to lie for him. He lied for himself.

We in Kansas know that you don’t call witnesses in the middle of the night unless you want to sway them. The president did so. We in Kansas know that you don’t urge hiding legal evidence under the bed unless you want to affect the outcome of a legal proceeding. The president did so.
… Do these actions rise to the level envisioned by our founding fathers in the constitution as ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ so warranting removal from office? Our constitution requires that the threshold for that judgment must be set by each senator sitting as a juror.
I believe an open-minded individual applying Kansas common sense would reach the conclusion that I reached.

While most of the national attention has focused on the tawdriness of this matter, this intense fixation on sensationalism diverts attention from the true issues – the true issues related to abuse of the power of the presidency, perjury, obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

 • Statement, 20 December 1998

Tampering with the truth-seeking functions of the law undermines our justice system and the foundations on which our freedoms lie. All Americans must abide by the rule of law, including the president of the United States, who is the highest official in the land and who has the additional duty to ensure that the laws are faithfully executed.

The president’s lawyers have argued that the president made these statements to refresh his recollection or to find out what Ms Currie knew in the event of a press avalanche. Neither of these explanations is plausible. It is impossible to refresh one’s recollection with false, leading questions. It is also impossible to find out what someone else knew if you tell them what they are supposed to believe.
The plausibility of either of these explanations is entirely discounted when you consider that the president called Betty Currie in a second time, on January 20, to ‘remind’ her of these statements.
The most likely explanation for these statements is far more sinister. That the president was intending to influence the testimony of a likely witness in a federal civil rights proceeding. President Clinton was, in fact, trying to get Betty Currie to join him in his web of deception and obstruction of justice.

Isn’t it true that [the federal law on witness tampering] criminalizes anyone who corruptly persuades or engages in misleading conduct with the intent to influence the testimony of any person in an official proceeding?

Shelby said Clinton’s January 1998 meeting with Ms Currie, after returning from his own testimony in the Jones lawsuit, was a key factor in his decision to vote for conviction on the obstruction charge. House managers accused Clinton of using that meeting to try to influence Currie’s testimony.
‘That was a strong component,’ Shelby said. ‘But it’s not just one thing in the obstruction evidence. If you put it all together, I thought it was beyond a reasonable doubt.’

There is clear evidence that President Clinton committed perjury on two or more occasions, and urged others to obstruct justice. These are serious felonious acts that strike at the heart of our judicial system. Oaths taken in the American system of government are serious commitments to truth and the rule of law. Violating these oaths or causing others to impede the investigation into such acts are serious matters that meet the standard for impeachment.

I believe the facts presented by the judiciary committee prove beyond a reasonable doubt that President Clinton repeatedly lied to a grand jury and encouraged a witness before that grand jury to provide false information. The United States is a nation of laws, not men. And I do not believe we can ignore the facts or disregard the constitution so that the president can be placed above the law.

It is clear that President Clinton on numerous occasions lied to a federal grand jury, lied in a civil proceeding affecting the civil rights of an American citizen, and orchestrated an attempt to obstruct justice.
… The untruthful actions of the president are not mere technical violations of federal law; rather, the president’s lies, obfuscation and overt acts to obstruct justice are serious and felonious, and they tear at the essential foundation of our judicial system.

I believe the evidence of serious wrongdoing is simply too compelling to be swept aside. I am particularly troubled by the clear evidence of lying under oath in that it must be the bedrock of our judicial system.
I believe the long-term consequence to this country of not acting on these serious charges before us far outweigh the consequences of following what the constitution provides for and bringing this matter to trial in the United States Senate.

Our declaration of independence says it best. ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’ In America there is no emperor, and there is no Praetorian guard. There is one standard of justice that applies equally to all, and to say or do otherwise will undermine the most sacred of all American ideals.

As details emerge…

… from the Mueller report, The Guardian will continue to investigate, report and expose the truth to make sure we understand the complete story. At this critical moment in American history, we’ll use the strength of independent journalism to challenge false narratives, sort facts from lies and create transparency to hold the powerful accountable.
And we need your help, too. More people, all around the world, are reading and supporting The Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism. And unlike many news organisations, we have chosen an approach that allows us to keep our reporting accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live or what they can afford.
The Guardian is editorially independent, meaning we set our own agenda. Our journalism is free from commercial bias and not influenced by billionaire owners, politicians or shareholders. No one edits our editor. No one steers our opinion.
This is important as it enables us to give a voice to those less heard, challenge the powerful and hold them to account. It’s what makes us different from so many others in the media, at a time when factual, honest reporting is critical.
Every contribution we receive from readers like you, big or small, goes directly into funding our journalism. This support enables us to keep working as we do – but we must maintain and build on it for every year to

Sarah Sanders accuses CNN commentator April Ryan of wanting her 'decapitated' after demanding heads should roll in wake of Mueller report revealing White House press secretary's repeated untruths

 • CNN correspondent April Ryan said the White House needed to 'start lopping the heads off' of untrustworthy employees, including Sarah Sanders

 •  Sanders said Ryan 'hit a new low' in calling for her decapitation

 • Ryan's comments came after the White House's response to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's redacted Russia report was made public last week

 • Ryan has an ongoing feud with the White House due to her high criticism of the Trump administration

 • Sanders says she feels sorry for journalists who can't obsess over collusion reports now that the Mueller report is out

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said reporter April Ryan hit a 'new low' by calling for her to be fired and decapitated.
'Look, I've had reporters say a lot of things about me. They've said I should be choked, they said I deserve a lifetime of harassment,' Sanders told Fox and Friends Monday morning from the White House, where the 141st annual Easter Egg roll was taking place.
'But certainly never had someone say I should be decapitated. This takes us to a new low, even for the liberal media. I think this once again proves why this journalist isn't taken seriously.'
Ryan, a White House correspondent with CNN and D.C. bureau chief for American Urban Radio, said that the American people couldn't trust Sanders.

'The American people can't trust her. They can't trust what's said from the president's mouthpiece, spokesperson from the people's house. Therefore, she should be let go, she should be fired,' Ryan said on CNN Friday, the day after Special Counsel Robert Mueller's redacted version of the Russia report was made public.

Ryan said that the White House needed to 'start lopping the heads off' of administrations officials that Americans couldn't trust, including Sanders
'When there is a lack of credibility there, you have to start and start lopping the heads off,' Ryan continued.
Sanders said that she felt sorry for journalists now that they can't obsess over reports of collusion in Mueller's findings from his Russia probe.
'I think our team needs to remain focused on how we keep pushing those things that actually help Americans, and not engaged in these petty fights with journalists simply that, again, shouldn't be taken seriously… and are just looking for a couple more minutes on TV,' Sanders continued.

'Frankly i feel sorry for them because they have lost the collusion battle and now they're looking for anything they can hang on to keep this story alive, and frankly i think it's time to move on.'
Ryan has had an ongoing feud with the White House and rose to prominence in her role with CNN after engaging in heated back and forth confrontations with Sanders during press briefings.
She often asks tough questions of the administration and is hit back with rants about 'fake news.'

Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley defended Sanders by saying he would not be lectured by media after they perpetuated reports that the Mueller report would find collusion between Trump and Russia
White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley also took a hit at the media Monday morning.
'Listen the media basically accused the president of collusion for two years with no proof and no evidence, they lied about this man. And when we actually went through all the process… no collusion, no obstruction, total exenteration of this president,' Gidley told Fox and Friends.
When asked about Ryan's comments regarding Sanders and California Congresswoman Maxine Waters' claims that people who still defend the president are not patriots, Gidley said he would not listen to those who perpetuated a lie since Trump took office.
'We as a White House staff are not going to take a lecture in truth telling from a mainstream media that has been lying about this president for two years. They have no credibility on this topic,' Gidley said.

The fact that Gidley could make that final statement is proof that Ryan is right. Heads should roll at the White House. They're either too stupid or too morally lacking to have a place in government.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump will make a state visit to the United Kingdom in June to meet with Queen Elizabeth II and celebrate the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the start of the invasion that led to the end of World War II.
The White House announced Tuesday morning the first couple will make the three-day trip from June 3 to June 5 at the invitation of the Queen, which they follow with a visit to France.
While in Britain, President Trump will participate in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May, whose handling of Brexit the president has criticized. It's unclear if Trump will address parliament.

After their UK stop, the president and first lady will then travel to Normandy on June 6 at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron to observe the 75th Anniversary of D-Day at the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer.
Trump will also meet with Macron. Their meeting will 'reinforce continued close cooperation on our shared economic and security interests,' the White House said in a statement.
It is not known which royals will be attending the events marking the Trumps' three day state visit to the United Kingdom.
Prince Harry's wife Meghan - a vocal opponent of Trump in the past - will be on maternity leave when he is in the UK, so may not be in attendance.
May said Tuesday of the upcoming visit: 'The UK and United States have a deep and enduring partnership that is rooted in our common history and shared interests.
'We do more together than any two nations in the world and we are both safer and more prosperous because of our cooperation.
'The State Visit is an opportunity to strengthen our already close relationship in areas such as trade, investment, security and defence, and to discuss how we can build on these ties in the years ahead.'

The Trumps will be marking D-Day celebrations during their trip to the United Kingdom and France
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: 'The President of the United States of America, President Donald J Trump, accompanied by Mrs Melania Trump, has accepted an invitation from Her Majesty The Queen to pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom from Monday 3rd June to Wednesday 5th June 2019.'
To commemorate the launch of D-Day, the Trumps will attend a ceremony in Portsmouth featuring live performances, military displays and tributes to the Allied troops who fought in Normandy, including a flypast of 26 RAF aircraft and at least 11 Royal Navy vessels in the Solent.
The Trumps visited the UK in July 2018, but only for a two-day working visit, and he was not officially invited by the Queen.
A full state visit for the Trumps would look very different from the 2018 trip.
It would begin with a welcome from the Queen at Horse Guards Parade in London and an inspection of the Guard of Honour.
That is followed by a carriage procession to Buckingham Palace escorted by mounted soldiers from the Household Cavalry.
Gun salutes would also be fired from Green Park and the Tower of London.
After arriving at the Palace, guests are invited to a State Banquet held in the Ballroom.

Guests who have important cultural, diplomatic or economic links to the country being hosted are invited to attend.
Over the next few days, the visiting head of state would then meet the prime minister, Government ministers and leaders of the main political parties.
They may also attend a banquet hosted by the Lord Mayor and City of London Corporation where they will meet industry leaders.
The announcement of the state visit has been expected and it sparked calls for renewed demonstrations after thousands of people took to the streets last year when he arrived in Britain.
Campaigners are also calling for the return of the baby 'Trump Blimp' a year after the giant 20ft tall effigy depicting the President as a baby was flown above Parliament Square.
And Labour MPs said he would not be welcomed in the UK and demanded a return of the scenes that greeted his arrival in 2018.
The state visit follows a rare meeting between the Queen and US ambassador Woody Johnson, which is thought to have taken place last month.

During Trump's previous visit in 2018 more than 100,000 people - including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn - took to the streets to protest against his politics, but the visit largely passed off without any major incidents
Buckingham Palace did not officially reveal details of the dinner between the Queen and US ambassador Johnson last month, saying they would not comment on a 'private' engagement.
The pair are thought to have dined at Winfield House, the imposing Regent's Park residence of America's leading official in the UK.
The Queen seldom undertakes 'secret' dinners of this nature any more and if she were to do so, it would normally be held at one of her own royal residences, namely Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.
The fact that she was willing to go to see the ambassador at his own home is a sign of how significant the event was.

The visit follows a rare meeting between the Queen and US ambassador Woody Johnson  (pictured) which is thought to have taken place last month
Johnson is a personal friend of Trump and was nominated by him to be the official 'Ambassador to the Court of St. James's' in 2017.
It remains unclear if Trump will address parliament during the trip.
John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, has so far refused to offer an invitation.
He has previously said it was an 'earned honour' and not a right.
On Tuesday Bercow said a request for a state visit from President Trump would be 'considered in the usual way', but did not say whether a request had yet been received.
A spokeswoman for the Speaker's Office said: 'Should a request be made to address the Houses of Parliament, it will be considered in the usual way.'
It has been reported that Bercow has declined the privilege because of his private objections to the President's style of leadership.
US secret service agents are expected to land in the UK this week to finalise the logistics required for the visit, which is expected to be formally confirmed with days.
The Mail on Sunday reported that, as part of the preparations, No 10 has been asked to limit his meetings because of problems with his 'concentration span'.
Ministers and officials have been warned that, if a meeting lasts longer than half an hour, then 'after that he just starts doodling'.
The American embassy has also advised that UK-US business deals announced during the trip should not be 'sold as a UK win' because that would be likely to anger the President.

The June state visit will look different from the Trump's July 2018 visit to the United Kingdom
During the 2018 visit, the Trumps were treated to dinner at Blenheim Palace with May, and a meeting with the 92-year-old monarch at Windsor castle, before jetting off to Scotland for the president to play golf at his Turnberry resort.
Trump later described the Queen as a 'tremendous woman' who had 'really never made a mistake'.
The Trumps were first invited by the monarch for a full state visit within weeks of entering the White House, at the suggestion of Downing Street.
The offer was accepted, but President Trump pulled out amid fears over widespread protests.
A second plan for Trump to open the new US Embassy in London last February was also abandoned.
His previous visit was, however, marked by large scale protests in London.
More than 100,000 people - including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn - took to the streets to protest against his politics, but the visit largely passed off without any major incidents.

Two teenage neo-Nazis are facing jail for encouraging terrorism in online messages to a group which posted threats against Prince Harry.
Michael Szewczuk, 19, a Polish student living in Leeds and studying at Portsmouth University, pleaded guilty to encouraging terrorism, disseminating terrorist publications and possessing terrorist material today.
Szewczuk and his associate Oskar Dunn-Koczorowski, 18, were members of SonnenKrieg Division, a British arm of an American neo-Nazi terrorist group said to be responsible for the murder of a gay teenager.

The group posted a picture of the Duke of Sussex set against a swastika, with a gun pointed at his head and the slogan: 'See ya later, race traitor!'

Neo-Nazi teen Michael Szewczuk (left) has admitted terror offences. He and Oskar Dunn-Koczorowski (right) both face jail after a court heard of posts threatening Prince Harry
They communicated using the Gab social media platform that has attracted neo-Nazi users including the Philadelphia synagogue killer, Robert Bowers.
The Daily Mail reported last year that the security services had concerns about British users of the site.
Dunn-Koczorowski and Szewczuk were members of a group called SonnenKrieg Division, which has links to the US group called Atomwaffen Divsion.
They believe in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and think that a 'race war' is imminent and 'white separatist' and 'survivalist' tactics will be necessary.

Szewczuk also had terrorist documents including the White Resistance Manual, a Practical Guide to the Strategy and Tactics of Revolution, Anarchist Cookbook.
He also had a copy of a document called the al-Qaeda Manual and another called How to Survive in the West - a Mujahid's Guide 2015, produced by an ISIS supporter.
Dunn-Koczorowski from Acton, West London used a gaming message board to publish an image suggesting that Prince Harry should be shot for marrying someone of mixed race and added: 'See ya later race traitor'.
He previously pleaded guilty to two separate charges accusing him of publishing messages on the Gab accounts between August 6 and September 11.

Group's shocking material lionised serial killer Ian Brady

According to the anti-extremist group Hope not Hate, Sonnenkrieg Division has produced 'some of the most frightening and sickening material' seen on the British far right for decades, including 'open interest in Satanism and the promotion of paedophilia, rape and murder.'
Hope not Hate said in a report earlier this year that members of the Sonnenkrieg Division 'openly celebrate and encourage sexual violence' and 'lionised' notorious figures such as the Moors Murderer Ian Brady.
They said that SKD was 'more extreme and potentially violent' than National Action, the group which encouraged attacks on MPs to emulate the killing of Jo Cox.
SKD was said to have links to an American based neo-Nazi group called Attomwaffen Division whose branding appears on some of the media on the Gab sites.
Atomwaffen Division was founded in 2013 and follows the neo-Nazi ideology of 'Universal Order', propagated by cult leader Charles Manson.
The group has been linked to high profile murders in the US including the murder of an openly gay, Jewish man named Blake Bernstein (pictured below) in California.

Judge Rebecca Poulet QC today granted the pair continued conditional bail ahead of their sentencing on June 17.
She ordered a pre-sentence report be prepared for Szewczuk but warned it should not be seen as a sign he would not receive a prison term.
The pair were arrested on December 6 in relation to material posted to three accounts on the social media account site.
The primary purpose of all three sites was said to be promoting the ideology and activity of a group known as SonnenKrieg Division (SKD).
Prosecutors said that SKD was an extreme right-wing group inspired by the book Siege written by James Mason in the 1980s and subsequently updated and re-released on several occasions.
The book examined neo-Nazi tactics and strategy, violent racism and anti-Semitism, and a belief in a coming 'race war'.
The tactics it suggested included withdrawal from the liberal-democratic system and political violence through 'lone actor' or small cell terrorism.
It supported 'white separatism' and 'survivalism' - the concept of establishing a separate state within a state of 'survivors'
Prosecutors said the book may be considered among 'the most extreme, revolutionary and potentially violent writings from the neo-Nazi perspective today.'
The Gab website calls itself a “free speech” alternative to Facebook and Twitter and does not have the same limits on hate speech.
It is said to have become a "haven" for white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other extremists as mainstream sites attempt to squeeze them out.

Barrister and human rights activist Amal Clooney has told the United Nations, 'This is your Nuremberg moment,' at a debate in New York.
Clooney, 41, - wife of Hollywood actor George - told the Security Council's debate on Sexual Violence in Conflict a genocide had been perpetrated against the Yazidi women by ISIS fighters.
She advocated setting up a special tribunal to adjudicate on ISIS atrocities against women, citing conflicts in Bosnia and Rwanda as precedent, Global Action reported.
Clooney argued for four options to put Islamic State fighters on trial: International Criminal Court referral, setting up a court by treaty, an EU special court or a hybrid court.

'Justice is not inevitable and it doesn't stand a chance if people around this table don't make it a priority,' Sherine Trados of Amnesty International reported Clooney as saying.
Clooney said it was time to 'truly honor survivors like Nadia,' as she appeared alongside Yazidi trafficking survivor and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Nadia Murad.

The Yazidi ethnic minority were enslaved and trafficked by Islamic State throughout their so-called 'caliphate' after being taken prisoner in northern Iraq and Syria.

Clooney was made a Global Citizen of the Year by the Correspondents Association (UNCA) in 2018 and is a friend of Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle.
In December, Clooney made a blistering attack on President Donald Trump at the UNCA Awards in New York.
She accused Trump of giving the 'green light' to autocratic regimes who jail and kill journalists after he named the American press the 'enemy of the people'.
Clooney said reporters across the globe were 'under attack' from autocratic regimes including in North Korea, the Philippines, Hungary, Turkey, and Brazil.
She added: 'The U.S. President has given such regimes a green light and labeled the press in this country the "enemy of the people".
'And of course two months ago a Washington Post journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, walked into a consulate in Istanbul and was brutally tortured to death.'
Clooney was appointed to her first UN commission in 2013 and has taken on a number of high profile international cases in her career as a civil rights lawyer.

'The American people deserve to know who is in this Country': Trump urges Supreme Court to leave citizenship question in 2020 census plan after justices lean toward allowing it

 • The Supreme Court has heard arguments over whether the Trump administration can ask about citizenship in the 2020 Census

 • Question has not been asked in full census since 1950 and opponents say it will cut the number of people who respond to the survey

 • Neil Gorsuch, a Trump's appointee, said question was 'not improper' and Brett Kavanaugh, said: 'It's a very common question internationally'

 • If 5-4 majority back Trump it will be victory for administration after series of lower courts ruled against his commerce secretary Wilbur Ross

President Donald Trump stepped into a brewing controversy over the coming 2020 Census on Wednesday, urging the Supreme Court to permit a question that could establish how many non-citizens are living in the U.S.
'The American people deserve to know who is in this Country,' he tweeted. 'Yesterday, the Supreme Court took up the Census Citizenship question, a really big deal. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!'
The high court's conservative majority appeared inclined on Tuesday to hand Trump a victory on his administration's plan to add the citizenship question to the head-count that happens every 10 years.
Democrats call the plan an effort to deter illegal immigrants from participating.

During arguments in the closely watched case, conservative justices rallied in defense of the administration's stated justification for using the citizenship question in the decennial population count, while their liberal counterparts remained skeptical.
The court has a 5-4 conservative majority. Among the conservative justices indicating support toward the administration's stance were Trump's two appointees, Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, as well as Chief Justice John Roberts, considered the court's pivotal vote.

Lower courts have blocked the question, ruling that the administration violated federal law and the U.S. Constitution in seeking to include it on the census form. A ruling by the Supreme Court is due by the end of June.
Opponents have said inclusion of a citizenship question would cause a sizeable undercount by frightening immigrant households and Latinos from filling out the census forms, fearful that the information would be shared with law enforcement.
This would cost Democratic-leaning areas electoral representation in Congress and federal aid, benefiting Trump's fellow Republicans and Republican-leaning parts of the country, they said.
The census is used to allot seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and distribute some $800 billion in federal funds.
During extended arguments that lasted about 80 minutes, Roberts and other conservative justices appeared to embrace the administration's argument that the question would yield better data to enforce the Voting Rights Act, which protects eligible voters from discrimination.
Roberts challenged New York Solicitor General Barbara Underwood, whose state sued the administration over the plan to add the question, saying citizenship is critical information for enforcing the Voting Rights Act.

Roberts also said it is 'quite common' for census questions to capture demographic information.
Kavanaugh cited other countries that ask a citizenship question as part of their censuses.
'It's a very common question internationally,' Kavanaugh said.
Gorsuch and fellow conservative Justice Samuel Alito both challenged evidence that asking about citizenship could cause census response rates to decline, as the challengers contend. Gorsuch noted that 'it's not like this question is improper to ask.'
Trump has pursued hardline immigration policies. The Supreme Court already has handed him some major victories, including last year allowing his travel ban targeting people from several Muslim-majority countries.
The case comes in a pair of lawsuits by a group of states and localities led by New York state, and a coalition of immigrant rights groups challenging the legality of the question. The census forms are due to be printed in the coming months.
Liberal justices noted evidence presented in the case from the Census Bureau's own experts that showed the citizenship question would lead to a population undercount, and, contrary to the administration's stated goal, less accurate citizenship data.
They also appeared skeptical about the administration's stated justification regarding the Voting Rights Act.
'You can't read the record without sensing this need is a contrived one,' Justice Elena Kagan said.
U.S. Solicitor General Noel Francisco, arguing on behalf of the administration, said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, whose department includes the Census Bureau, acted within his discretion in deciding to add the citizenship question.
'It boils down to whether the secretary's judgment is a reasonable one,' Francisco said.

Determination: Wilbur Ross, Trump's commerce secretary, is in charge of the Census and has pushed to include the question. A New York federal judge found Ross had concealed his true motives for adding the question
Business groups and corporations such as Lyft, Box, Levi Strauss and Uber also opposed the citizenship question, saying it would compromise census data that they use to make decisions including where to put new locations and how to market products.
Manhattan-based U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman on Jan. 15 ruled that the Commerce Department's decision to add the question violated a federal law called the Administrative Procedure Act.
Federal judges in Maryland and California also prohibited the question's inclusion in subsequent rulings, saying it would violate the Constitution's mandate to enumerate the population every 10 years.
In November, when the Supreme Court allowed the trial before Furman to proceed, three of the court's conservative justices - Gorsuch, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito - said they would have blocked it, indicating they may be sympathetic to the administration's legal arguments.
Furman found that Ross concealed his true motives for his March 2018 decision to add the question.
The Census Bureau itself estimated that households corresponding to 6.5 million people would not respond to the census if the citizenship question is asked, leading to less accurate citizenship data.
Citizenship has not been asked of all households since the 1950 census. It has featured since then on questionnaires sent to a smaller subset of the population. While only U.S. citizens can vote, non-citizens comprise an estimated 7 percent of the population.

Sri Lankan authorities were told by foreign security agencies more than four months ago that a network of violent Islamic extremists was active in the country and likely to commit terrorist attacks, regional and western officials have said.
The revelation that officials may have known last year about the threat posed by those responsible for the Easter Sunday bombings that killed more than 350 people will fuel outrage at what now appears to be multiple and systematic intelligence failings.
On Wednesday, President Maithripala Sirisena demanded the resignation of senior officials who failed to pass on three separate formal warnings sent by Indian agencies in the three weeks before the attack.

The sources said these formal warnings followed months of informal conversations between Indian investigators and their Sri Lankan counterparts in which details of the network, including the identities of its leader and members, were passed on.
Sirisena has already called for a massive security overhaul after the failure to prevent one of the most deadly terrorist attacks of recent years.
Sarath Fonseka, a Sri Lankan field marshall and politician, told parliament the attack appeared to have been “seven or eight months in the making” and exposed a “monumental lapse in intelligence gathering”.
“In any other country, the entire government would have had to resign for making a mess of things like this, but it won’t happen here,” he said. “Security has become a joke.”
The Indian information was gathered from a huge haul of data seized during raids on suspected Islamic State sympathisers in November, as well as their subsequent interrogation.
Large number of phones, discs and USB keys collected in the raids revealed links between detainees and Mohammed Zahran Hashim, the suspected leader of the Sri Lankan terrorist network responsible for the bombings, security officials told the Guardian.
A surveillance operation then revealed the radical cleric, who was already known to Sri Lankan security services, repeatedly contacted known Isis activists in Bangladesh. According to some reports, Hashim was also in touch with militants in eastern Afghanistan linked to Isis.
Isis has claimed responsibility for the bombings, believed to be the most lethal ever conducted by the group.
Indian officials increased their informal warnings to the Sri Lankans after explosives were found on a remote farm at a national park in north-west Sri Lanka. Hashimi’s network was linked to the cache. They were not aware at that time of any plot to target churches or hotels, the sources said.
It is not clear why Delhi waited until April to issue a formal communication about the threat.
On Wednesday, the death toll from the attacks on three churches and three luxury hotels in and around the capital, Colombo, rose to 359, with 500 injured.

Despite the scale of the ongoing security operation, Sri Lanka’s prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, said several suspects armed with explosives had yet to be found.
He said there were more explosives and militants “out there”, and confirmed reports there had been a failed attack against a fourth major hotel, and that the Indian embassy was also a possible target.
One of the suspects was identified on Wednesday as Abdul Lathief Jameel Mohamed, after Sri Lanka’s defence minister said a suspect had studied in the UK and Australia. British counter-terrorism investigators said they believed Mohamed attended a university in south-east England from 2006-07, and they were searching for any associates or signs of extremist activity during his time in the UK.
Eighteen suspects were arrested overnight, bringing the total number detained to more than 60.
Up to nine people directly linked to the attack could still be at large, sources involved in the investigation said. Officials said authorities expected to make further arrests in the coming days.
The exact role of Isis in the attacks is yet to be established. It is possible the group’s involvement reorientated Hashim’s network away from bombs directed at destroying major Buddhist monuments and towards targets more closely associated with its global jihadist ideology.
Hashimi could be seen in a video released by Isis on Tuesday after it claimed responsibility. Dressed in a black tunic and headscarf and carrying a rifle, the cleric is seen leading a group of men, said to be Sunday’s attackers, in a pledge of allegiance to the leader of Isis, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Western and south Asian officials said Hashmi had started a group of extremists in a small village in eastern Sri Lanka, attracting disaffected young men. The middle-aged cleric travelled overseas about two years ago, possibly to the Maldives, which has become a hub of Islamist activism in recent years. Security agencies followed Hashim’s online extremist activism closely and were concerned he could develop links to either al-Qaida or Isis.
Islamic State’s Amaq news agency also published a statement saying its “fighters” were responsible and listed the names of the suicide bombers.
The funerals of those killed in the blasts continued in Negombo and Colombo on Wednesday, as a social media ban and state of emergency remained in place across the country.

Bernie Sanders was booed and jeered by the crowd at the She The People Forum on Wednesday as he struggled to answer questions about black voters.
The 2020 presidential candidate was subjected to heckling from the fired-up crowd at Houston's Texas Southern University as he was asked about his plans to combat white-supremacist violence.
At one point host Aimee Allison asked the 77-year-old Vermont senator what he would do to protect black communities.

'I know I date myself a little bit here, but I actually was at the March on Washington with Dr. [Martin Luther] King back in 1963,' Sanders said, launching into his familiar anecdote.
But before he could continue, loud jeers broke out among the crowd and one person shouted: 'We know!'
'As somebody who actively supported Jesse Jackson's campaign, as one of the few white elected officials to do so in '88, I have dedicated my life to the fight against racism, and sexism, and discrimination of all forms,' Sanders continued.
At one point in the discussion when Sanders appeared to dodge another question on white supremacists, host Aimee Allison drew loud applause when she reminded him that the 'core of the question' concerned violence against minorities.

Sanders got a mixed response from the crowd. Some of whom clapped for him, others booed when he mentioned his well-worn anecdote about being on a march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Co-host Joy Reid then asked Sanders how he planned to win over Hillary Clinton voters, including black women in particular.
Sanders then launched a long rant about Trump and was again heckled by the crowd over his refusal to answer the question, prompting Reid to ask, 'Yeah, and for black women specifically?'
'I'm sorry', Sanders replied as the jeers grew even louder.
Reid repeated: 'For black women specifically.'
Sanders' response was then cut off as the heckles drowned out his speech: 'Black women will be an integral part of what our campaign, and what our administration is about. Okay? And that means...'
After a few seconds waiting for the crowd to quieten down Reid appeared to ask if he was finished with his point, to which he simply replied 'Yeah'.

I think that is Sanders biggest negative, as it was in the 2016 primary. He can’t win over the black vote, especially black women. I saw another segment of that session last night with Elizabeth Warren. She seemed to really wow that crowd with a very personal story about her family life and how it struggled to make ends meet when she was a teenager. One of the session’s moderators said she had the best positive reaction from the crowd of all the candidates who showed up.

Carol, I’m glad Joe Biden is in the race. Too soon to tell how well he will be received by voters but he does have a solid group of supporters. At this point he seems like the best candidate to go up against Trump. I want to see how the Democratic debates go. The first one is in June. It’s way too early for me to have a favorite. There is so much at stake that it is equally important that we nominate someone who can strongly go up against Trump as well as having a forward looking agenda for the country.

President Donald Trump on Friday announced at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting that the United States will drop out of an international arms treaty signed in 2013 by then-President Barack Obama but opposed by the NRA and other conservative groups.
Trump told members of the gun lobby that he intends to revoke the status of the United States as a signatory of the Arms Trade Treaty, which was never ratified by the U.S. Senate.
'We're taking our signature back,' Trump said to thousands of cheering attendees, many wearing red hats emblazoned with the Republican president's 'Make America Great Again' slogan.
'Under my administration, we will never surrender American sovereignty to anyone, Trump said, before signing a document on stage asking the Senate to halt the ratification process. 'We will never allow foreign diplomats to trample on your Second Amendment freedom.'

The NRA has long opposed the treaty, which regulates the $70 billion business in conventional arms and seeks to keep weapons out of the hands of human rights abusers.

The lobbying group argues it would undermine domestic gun rights, a view the Obama administration rejected.
Trump said the United Nations would soon receive formal notice of the withdrawal.
The NRA spent $30.3 million in support of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a group that tracks campaign spending.
The 193-nation U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved the treaty in April 2013 and the United States, the world's No. 1 arms exporter, voted in favor of it despite fierce opposition from the NRA.
Trump's action drew an immediate rebuke from international human rights groups.
'The United States will now lock arms with Iran, North Korea and Syria as non-signatories to this historic treaty whose sole purpose is to protect innocent people from deadly weapons,' said Oxfam America President Abby Maxman.
Adotei Akwei, of Amnesty International USA, said in a statement: 'With this announcement the Trump administration will re-open the floodgates for arms sales with weakened human rights criteria.'
So far 101 countries have formally joined onto the treaty. Another 29, including the United States, have signed it, but not yet formally joined.
Ted Bromund, senior research fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, said the treaty 'can only have the perverse effects of driving potential importers to buy from China or Russia' and other nations that are not party to the agreement.
Trump was joined on his trip to the NRA's meeting in Indianapolis by White House national security adviser John Bolton, an advocate of withdrawing the United States from international treaties out of concern they might undermine U.S. authority.
With Friday's announcement, Trump continued his drive to roll back Obama-era initiatives.
Nearly two years ago, Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, which aims to reduce global carbon emissions that scientists link to harmful climate change.

Republicans argue the U.S. economy would suffer if it met the deal's carbon-reduction goals.
In May, 2018, Trump pulled the United States out of a 2015 international deal that eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for strict limits being placed on Iran's nuclear activities.
The United States has since reimposed some sanctions that had been suspended under the deal.
Friday's speech marked the third consecutive year Trump has spoken to the annual meeting of the NRA. Since his election, he has been a vocal proponent of gun rights, a position that plays well with his political base.
Trump has vowed never to infringe on the right to own guns enshrined in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which he said on Friday was 'under assault' by Democrats.
Trump banned 'bump stocks' - rapid-fire gun attachments used in the October 2017 mass shooting that killed 58 people at a country music festival in Las Vegas.
But he sidestepped tough restrictions he considered after the February 2018 shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 people were killed and embraced an NRA proposal for arming teachers to defend schools.

I was socked when I heard that Trump announced the US would step back from the ATT agreement. Buf on the other hand he's cancelled about every agreement Obama hd signed. He wants other countries to stop critisizing the US but continuesly tells them what to do.
He's simplly an embarrassment - and there are still millions of people who support him. I simply don't understand them.

Carolhathaway - Welcome to our hell. Most of us don't understand it either.

Donnamarie - Part of the problem,I think, is that younger voters are so idealistic they can't (or won't) acknowledge the need for pragmatism in politics. Bottom line is you can't accomplish anything if you don't get elected. If your choice isn't the party's candidate you don't just take your ball and go home like so many of Bernie's supporters did in 2016 - unless you want to hand the election to Trump.

The Democratic party has an embarrassment of riches in their field of candidates. Each ticks off many of the boxes we'd want in a president. The problem is in choosing which things we value most and which person who has those qualities can get elected.

Carol, sometimes I look at the rallies that Trump speaks at. I look at the NRA convention he spoke at yesterday and I see a sea of people wholeheartedly cheering him on. It IS embarrassing for our country and it makes me feel like I don’t know my own country anymore. It’s really painful.

Lizzy, that is my worry that younger voters won’t realize that first and foremost Trump has to be beaten. And a far left progressive agenda is going to turn off those independents and maybe the last few quasi Trump supporters (tho I can’t imagine there are many of those left). It is time for our country to have a new vision and embrace far more progressive policies. But the 2020 election is all about whatever it takes to beat Trump.

I assume Trump usually speaks in front of supporters (and other politicians seem to do the same). Of course they are hailing every single word coming out of his mouth, bug it allows no discussion or opposition. Town hall meetings or talk shows seem to be much more interesting and meaningful.

Carolhathaway - Trump's handlers don't let him appear anywhere he might be challenged and made to look in any way unsuited for office. He goes where they know it's safe for him to spout his garbage to a base of supporters who will give him money no matter what he does or says. It's embarrassing how many of them there are.

PAN - The sickest thing about that clip is that they weren't booing him for saying something so despicably untrue. They were booing the doctors and mothers who do such horrible things because, of course, it's true. It must be true because their beloved anti-abortion liar said so. When I see something like this I despair for the future of this country. The bean counters say the birth rate here is dropping. Good!

 • A new book claims North Korea gave the United States a $2 million bill to cover its expenses for the care of comatose Otto Warmbier

 • President Trump tweeted on Friday that he hasn't paid anything for hostage releases, but didn't rule out the possibility that an invoice existed

National Security Advisor John Bolton confirmed Sunday that the Trump administration agreed to pay the North Korean regime $2 million as part of a deal to secure the release of American prisoner Otto Warmbier, but never paid the bill.
President Donald Trump denied Friday morning in a tweet that his administration paid the totalitarian country a reported ransom in 2017. The president did not, however, address a report about the $2 million invoice for Warmbier's medical care.
'No money was paid to North Korea for Otto Warmbier, not two Million Dollars, not anything else,' Trump wrote Friday.
But when 'Fox News Sunday' host Chris Wallace asked Bolton if Trump's negotiator, Joseph Yun, and his team agreed to pay, he responded, 'It appears that they did.' The agreement was inked before Bolton joined the administration, he said.

Bolton emphasized that the U.S. never paid a dime.

Warmbier was arrested and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for stealing a propaganda poster in Pyongyang; he was flown to Ohio in June 2017 after he fell into a coma from unknown causes
'I think that's the key point,' he said. 'The president has been very successful in getting 20-plus hostages released from imprisonment around the world and hasn't paid anything for any of them.'
'No money was paid,' he said. 'That is clear.'
Trump on Friday blasted his predecessor for agreeing to a 5-to-1 prisoner release as a condition of the Taliban cutting former Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl loose in 2014, and complained about a separate transaction that saw a 10-figure payout to Iran in an unrelated release of Americans in Tehran's custody.
'This is not the Obama Administration that paid 1.8 Billion Dollars for four hostages, or gave five terroist hostages plus, who soon went back to battle, for traitor Sgt. Bergdahl!' Trump vented on Twitter, misspelling the word 'terrorist.'
Washington Post report on Thursday concluded that the administration agreed to reimburse Pyongyang for Warmbier's care but stiffed the rogue nation on the bill after it released the comatose student to U.S. officials.

Bolton emphasized on Sunday that no money changed hands, but his statement was the first to confirm that Trump's negotiator in North Korea agreed to pay what amounts to a ransom

Warmbier mysteriously fell into a coma on the day he was sentenced, and died days after he was released into U.S. custody in 2017
Trump quoted an unnamed American 'chief hostage negotiator' in a second tweet to support his contention that he hadn't paid a ransom for Warmbier.
'“President Donald J. Trump is the greatest hostage negotiator that I know of in the history of the United States. 20 hostages, many in impossible circumstances, have been released in last two years. No money was paid.” Cheif Hostage Negotiator, USA!' he wrote, misspelling the word 'chief.'
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders identified the author of the quote for DailyMail.com: 'His name is Robert O’Brien, the Administration’s Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs.'
The administration has not said who the '20 hostages' are.
O'Brien has offered similarly sweeping praise for Trump in the past. Last month in the Oval Office he told reporters that 'the president has had unparalleled success in bringing Americans home without paying concessions, without prisoner exchanges, but through force of will and the goodwill that he’s generated around the world.'

Warmbier died shortly after returning to his home state. He fell ill while he was in a North Korean detention center after being sentence to 15 years of hard labor for stealing a propaganda poster from a hotel.

Robert O'Brien, the president's chief hostage negotiator, offered glowing praise for Trump on Friday, as he has in the past
An Ohio coroner said Warmbier died from a lack of oxygen and blood to the brain. Pyongyang blamed botulism and ingestion of a sleeping pill and dismissed torture claims.
Barack Obama was president at the time of Warmbier's incarceration and his State Department was not successful in freeing him.
Months after Obama left office, North Korea agreed to release the student, who arrived home in a vegetative state, to the Trump administration.
Fred Warmbier, Otto's father, told the Post that he had not been informed about a hospital bill and said it sounded like a 'ransom' request for his late son.

Warmbier traveled to North Korea from China while completing a study abroad program in Hong Kong at the end of 2015, as part of a tour group that included ten other Americans.
The group celebrated New Year's Eve in Pyongyang, and at some point during the stay, Warmbier took down a propaganda poster from the wall of his hotel that he planned to take home as a souvenir.
He was arrested at Pyongyang airport shortly after, before tearfully confessing on North Korean television six weeks into his detention that he had taken the poster.
A court sentenced Warmbier to 15 years in prison with hard labor for his confessed crime.
The U.S. State Department said at the time that it was evident that North Korea arrested Warmbier to make a political statement.

Shane M. Piche, 26, has been spared jail time despite admitting to raping a 14-year-old girl he met on his bus route
A former New York bus driver, who admitted to raping a 14-year-old girl he met on his route, has been spared jail time.
Shane M. Piche, 26, who used to work as a bus driver for the Watertown City School District, pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in February.
Last week, Judge James P. McClusky sentenced Piche to 10 years probation and ordered him to register as a Level 1 sex offender.

McClusky said he gave Piche the sentence because he had no prior arrests and there was only one victim involved, according to the Watertown Daily Times.
Level 1 sex offenders are considered to be at low risk for committing the crime again.
Piche will not be included in the online sex offender databases.
Authorities said Piche met the teenager while on his bus route. According to the Daily Times, the rape happened at his residence along Ridge Road.
Piche was fired from the bus company as a result of the incident. In addition to the probation, Piche is not allowed to be alone with anyone under 17 years old

He also has to pay $375 in court fees and a $1,000 special sex offender registration fee.
The victim's mother shared a statement with 7 News that reads:' 'I wish Shane Piche would have received time in jail for the harm he caused to my child.
'He took something from my daughter she will never get back and has caused her to struggle with depression and anxiety.'

So men get one free child rape now?

I would deal with this POS myself, then make sure the judge's days were numbered, too.

And yeah, he looks like a one-time offender, right? I'm not saying rapists have a certain look. I'm saying the factors that made this apparently low-success, unattractive, slob of a man use the little power he has over a 14-year-old are not going to change. He'll just find a way to channel his deviance that won't get him caught so easily.

Article from a German news magazine (yes, we have not just gossip magazines):

Short (and rough) translation:

The religious leaders of the Yazidis have declared that female survivors and their children are welcome back in their community - but this doesn't include children whose fathers are ISIS fighters but children of Yazidi parents who who were displaced after August 3rd, 1014.

Murad Ismael, principal of Yazda, explains the problems the religious leaders were facing: "Only children whose father and mother are Yezidis, are Yezidis themselves. So accepting a child whose father is an ISIS terrorist in their community, is a violatikn of their religious rules and laws. Under Iraqi law, children with a moslem father are moslems themselves - including children of ISIS terrorists, this would also cause problems. Plus the fact of the unbrlievable crimes committed by ISIS makes it really hard for people to accept children in their community which are connected to ISIS."

Ismael's vonclusion: "This decision is a catastroph for women and children who are affected by it, nevertheless I accept it."

According to Yazda, nearly 3,000 displaced women are still missing. Yazda suspects that many of them shrink from returning to their communities because they would have to leave their children behind. Obviously, some of them even stay with their tormentors since they are afraid of losing their children. Others live in the refugee camp al-Hol in Syria.

Appearently, these rapes were part of  the genozide to the yezidis. Now Yazda hopes that other countries will include these Yazidi women and their children - in safety of ISIS terror and of the intolerance of their own religion.

After I had read Nadia Murad's book, I had already asked myself how the Yazidis would cope with these problems: women whonhad lost their virginity by being raped, had to convert to islam and also had children whose genitor is an ISIS terrorist.

And that's the result...

This must be a horror for those women who live in a nightmare for nearly five years, and this nightmare doesn't seem to end. I can't tell you how sorry I feel for them.

A group of self-proclaimed white nationalists have stormed a bookstore in Washington D.C. chanting 'this is our land' to protest the launch of a book on politics of racial resentment.
About 10 white male protesters marched into the Politics and Prose bookstore on Saturday with a megaphone as author Jonathan M. Metzl was discussing his new book.
Metzl's book - 'Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland' - touches on how racial politics impacts lower and middle class white Americans.
The group, who identified themselves as nationalists and identitarians, marched in shortly after Metzl began speaking about his book.

'You would have the white working class trade their homeland for handouts,' the man with the megaphone shouted.
'But we, as nationalists and identitarians, can offer the workers of this country a homeland, their birthright, in addition to health care, good jobs and so forth.'
Many who were there to listen to Metzl speak started booing loudly in response to the protesters.
The group started chanting 'this is our land' before they marched back out of the bookstore.
The interaction lasted about five minutes.
Metzl, who is a psychiatrist and director of the Center for Medicine, Health, and Society at Vanderbilt University, told the Washington Post that the group were well-organized and had a videographer.
'It was pretty intense. I think everyone was really surprised. I get lots of threats on voice mail, but this was the first time in person,' Metzl said after the event.

He said he had just recognized a man in the audience who had helped his father and grandparents escape the Nazis in Austria when the protesters walked into the store.
'I was saying how much stronger America is when we think about our responsibility to people in need. At that point, the Nazis walked into the talk,' he said.
'It was very symbolic for me. In case anybody's wondering what's happening right now, they're illustrating my point.'
Metzl's new book talks about how middle class white Americans can be drawn to politicians who promise to improve their lives but also support policies that place them at greater risk of illness and death.

The protest happened on the same day a gunman opened fire inside a California synagogue.
Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted shortly after: 'Today's senseless attack on worshipers at the Chabad of Poway synagogue was a cowardly attack on the religious fabric that holds many of our communities together. I pray for an end to these acts of hatred and to the many senseless acts of gun violence plaguing our country.
'Between the horrific act of hate and antisemitism at Chabad of Poway and the ignorance and hate from the white nationalists who interrupted a book talk today in DC, my heart is broken.
'Let's continue fighting hate with love. Hate will not win because we will always fight back, united in love. Today, on the final day of Passover, we pray for the victims and their families.'

has said drug cartels are “in total control of the Mexico side of the Southern Border” as he orders sweeping reforms to the US's immigration system.

The plans introduced in a memo by attorney-general William Barr and acting homeland security secretary Kevin McAleenan would see impoverished asylum seekers required to pay a fee to have their applications and work permits processed and migrants who have attempted to enter the US illegally prevented from receiving employment authorisation before any relief or protection is granted.

The president is meanwhile suing Deutsche Bank and Capital One to prevent them complying with House subpoenas and handing over records of his financial dealings with them as deputy attorney-general Rod Rosenstein confirms he will leave office on 11 May.

Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg has been falsely accused of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old university student in a stunt allegedly made up by two right-wing trolls.
The claims surfaced on Monday when Hunter Kelly, a student at Ferris State University in Michigan, appeared to publish a post on Medium that claimed he was sexually assaulted by Buttigieg in February.
Despite that post and a Twitter account under his name that tweeted details of the so-called abuse, Kelly came out hours later to deny ever being sexually assaulted by Buttigieg.

He said the Twitter and Medium accounts bearing his name were fake and that he had nothing to do with the false abuse narrative.
A Republican source told the Daily Beast that conservative lobbyist Jack Burkman and conspiracy theorist Jacob Wohl were behind the fake allegations.
The source accused the right-wing duo of trying to convince several young men to go public with fake sex assault allegations against Buttigieg in recent weeks in a bid to derail with his 2020 campaign.
Burkman and Wohl have refused to comment.
Buttigieg, who is openly gay, is the mayor of South Bend, Indiana and is a former Navy Reserve officer who served in Afghanistan.
He is one of several Democrats to put their name forward to be the presidential candidate. Buttigieg has already won over voters and many skeptics with his intelligence and an articulate yet plain-spoken speaking style.

A Twitter account under the student's name, which also bears his photos, posted a link on Monday to the Medium article with the title: 'Pete Buttigieg Sexually Assaulted Me'. A follow up tweet also asked his followers to pray for him as he prepared to do an interview about his 'horrific experience'
He's also shown an ability to inspire voters of different ages with a message of hope and 'a new generation of leadership' and has been able to raise millions more than many of his Democratic rivals.
On the campaign trail on Monday, Buttigieg said the allegations were made up.
The Medium post, which was first published Sunday night, has since been deleted.
The initial post, which appeared under Kelly's name, falsely claimed that the student had been sexually assaulted by Buttigieg in February.
The post didn't offer exact details of the so-called abuse but said that coming forward with the allegations was the 'toughest thing' he has had to do.

It detailed that he had contemplated suicide, hadn't slept for the past three days and had vomited eight times.

Kelly came forward on Monday afternoon to say that he was not behind the post and that the Twitter account was fake.
'I was not sexually assaulted,' Kelly wrote on his Facebook account. 'It's important for everyone to know that I was not sexually assaulted and would never falsely accuse anyone.

'To keep it brief for now - I was approached by a political figure to come to DC to discuss political situations from the standpoint of a gay Republican.
'When I arrived they discussed Peter Buttigieg and started talking about how they would be working a campaign against him. I went to bed and woke up to a fake Twitter @RealHunterKelly and an article that I in no way endorsed or wrote.
'I have since left and am working on a formal statement to give to everyone including the Buttigieg family.'
Kelly went on to tell the Advocate that Wohl and Burkman had flown him to Washington D.C. on Sunday. They picked him up from the airport and he stayed at Burkman's home.
He said the two men discussed the need to end Buttigieg's campaign but Kelly said he never agreed to the tactic they used.
Kelly claims he went to bed and woke to find the false story and Twitter account already peddling the fake narrative. He said his sister and brother-in-law immediately came to get him from D.C.
It is not the first time Wohl and Burkman have been embroiled in a fake sex assault allegations.
The duo were accused of being involved in the bizarre plot to smear Robert Mueller as a sexual abuser last year.

I hope there are some kind of criminal charges that can be brought against those two jackasses. Identity theft? Civilly could be grounds for a slander/libel lawsuit? Something. They'll just keep on doing the same thing over and over unless they're stopped. There should be consequences.

Trump demands European countries take back astonishing total of 1,800 ISIS fighters captured in collapse of the caliphate

 • President Donald Trump demanded European countries take back the 1,800 ISIS prisoners captured in the collapse of the caliphate in Syria and Iraq

 • 'European countries are not helping at all, even though this was very much done for their benefit. They are refusing to take back prisoners,' he tweeted

 • Some of the prisoners are natives of European countries like Britain and France

 • Trump has made this demand of European allies before

 • But European nations have mixed feelings about accepting the prisoners

By EMILY GOODIN, U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM

President Donald Trump on Tuesday demanded European countries take back the 1,800 ISIS prisoners captured in the collapse of the caliphate in Syria and Iraq.
'We have 1,800 ISIS Prisoners taken hostage in our final battles to destroy 100% of the Caliphate in Syria. Decisions are now being made as to what to do with these dangerous prisoners....,' he wrote on Twitter.
The president also complained European nations were failing to take back prisoners from their specific countries.

'European countries are not helping at all, even though this was very much done for their benefit. They are refusing to take back prisoners from their specific countries. Not good!, he added.

Trump has made this demand of European allies before.
In February, he tweeted European countries should take the 800 prisoners being held, a request that was received mixed reaction across the ocean.
'The Caliphate is ready to fall. The alternative is not a good one in that we will be forced to release them,' Trump warned at the time.
Some of the prisoners are natives of European countries such as Shamima Begum, the British schoolgirl turned ISIS wife and mom, and Lukas Glass, who is German.
French jihadis made up the largest contingent of European recruits.
The prisoners were actually taken by Kurdish militias, backed by U.S. and other coalition forces including France and Britain.

But few European nations have have embassies in Syria or Iraq - the two countries where the prisoners are being held - let alone extradition treaties.
Plus there is the question of the prisoners' families.
And then there's the concern the prisoners could face torture or the death penalty. The European Union opposes the death penalty.
Britain refuses to take back its subjects who have joined ISIS and has stripped them of their citizenship.
The topic could come up in talks between Prime Minister Theresa May and President Trump during June's state visit by the Trumps to the United Kingdom.
