‘Gravity,’ ‘Her’ top L.A. Film Critics Awards

A tie-happy Los Angeles Film Critics Association gave its Best Picture of 2013 award to both “Gravity” and “Her” at a meeting of 45 members in Cheviot Hills on Sunday.
“This year has seen one of the closest votes in the history of our group, as evidenced by the unprecedented number of ties in major categories,” said the group’s president Stephen Farber. “The top contenders were often separated by one or two votes, and several other films were very close behind them. I think this testifies to the strong number of memorable films this year, including enterprising big studio offerings, as well as independent and foreign films”
The best actress award was also a tie between “Blue Jasmine’s” Cate Blanchett and “Blue Is the Warmest Color’s” Adele Exarchopoulos. Supporting actor was also a two-fer, “Spring Breakers’” James Franco and “Dallas Buyers Club’s” Jared Leto.
“Gravity” was the organization’s — which is composed of print, online and radio movie reviewers from the Southern California region — big winner. The groundbreakingly staged outer space extravaganza also took LAFCA mentions for its director Alfonso Cuaron, cinematography and film editing.
“Her,” about a near-future romance between a man and his computer’s operating system, won production design kudos as well, and the French lesbian love story “Blue Is the Warmest Color” was additionally voted best foreign language film.
Bruce Dern won best actor for his taciturn old curmudgeon in the movie “Nebraska.” Newcomer Lupita Nyong’o took the supporting actress nod for her tormented portrayal in “12 Years a Slave.”
“Before Midnight” won the screenplay award and “Inside Llewyn Davis” was cited for best use of music.
Sarah Polley’s exploration of her mother’s – and to her surprise, her own – secret past, “Stories We Tell,” was named best documentary and the French language “Ernest & Celestine” won the group’s animation award.
LAFCA’s independent/experimental award was given to Charlotte Pryce’s magic lantern work “Cabinets of Wonder.” Megan Ellison, the young cyber-scion who has produced such acclaimed films as “Her,” “Spring Breakers,” “American Hustle” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” was named this year’s Next Generation award recipient.
A special citation was bestowed on the creative team of “12 Years a Slave.” Boutique home video outfit the Criterion Collection was given LAFCA’S Legacy of Cinema citation. “A Hard Day’s Night” director Richard Lester was voted the group’s Career Achievement award at an earlier meeting.
LAFCA’S 39th annual awards will be presented at a dinner Jan. 11 at the International Hotel in Century City.
Runners-up this year were: director, Spike Jonze (“Her”); actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”); supporting actress, June Squibb (“Nebraska”); screenplay, “Her”; animation, “The Wind Rises”; foreign language film, “The Great Beauty” (Italy); documentary, “The Act of Killing”; film editing, “Upstream Color”; cinematography, “Inside Llewyn Davis”; production design, “Llewyn Davis”; music, “Her.”
