Lakin, while Fosamax was the culprit, it was because I was on it for about 15 yrs. without a "holiday". Nowadays, when it's prescribed, it's usually for only a period of about 5 yrs., and then a holiday with none.
Joanna, Dr. said that calcium with vitamin D would do the job for now. Don't know about herbalists, possibly there are but I'm really not a believer so I don't think I'd be into trying them.
Lucy, believe me, I'm not planning on falling anymore, never intended to in the first place. Actually, I didn't fall until the bone snapped, and sincerely hope that doesn't happen ever again.

Love you all for you kind wishes, and caring ways. love1

http://www.barbaracartland.com/static/home.aspx?from=5

Barbara Cartland was the most prolific and well-loved author
of her time.

She sold over 1,000 million books, giving her a place in the Guinness book of Records. Her novels of romance and love have been enjoyed by generations in over 36 countries.
Not only was she a successful and well-loved author but she also lived a truly amazing life which spanned two world wars.
The following is a brief summary of the life of a truly remarkable and fascinating personality.

Click here for a detailed chronology including many photographs.

Helping Others
During the Second World War Barbara Cartland was Chief Lady Welfare Officer in Bedfordshire looking after 20,000 service men and women. She had the idea of gathering as many wedding dresses as she could for hire, so that service brides would have a white dress to wear on their wedding day.
She bought 1,000 second hand gowns without coupons for the ATS, the WAAFS and the WRENS and made many brides’ big day, very special. In 1945 Barbara Cartland received the Certificate of Merit from Eastern Command.

In the early 1960’s she campaigned for the rights of gypsies' to have a permanent place to live which resulted in an act of Parliament.
One of the first gypsy camps was opened by Barbara Cartland in 1964 and called Barbaraville and there are now 14 in Hertfordshire. This has meant thousands of gypsies and their families have a place to call home and their children can be educated in their local area.

One of Barbara’s passions was fighting for better conditions and salaries for midwives and nurses. Through this cause she became a Dame of Grace of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, Chairman of the St John Council in Hertfordshire and Deputy President of the St John Ambulance Brigade.

Other books and recordings
As well as her romantic novels she also wrote books on health and vitamins and was a great believer in the healing power of honey and the benefits of vitamins. She also wrote a number of cookery books; the recipes from which were often used in the House of Commons.

Barbara wrote a number of biographies of famous characters from history, including the biography of her brother, Ronald Cartland, who was the first Member of Parliament to be killed in the Second World War. This book has a preface by Sir Winston Churchill.

In 1978 she sang an Album of Love Songs with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Awards and achievements
In 1931 Barbara and two RAF Officers devised and created the first aeroplane-towed glider airmail.
In 1984 she received the Bishop Wright Air industry Award at Kennedy Airport USA for her contribution to the development of aviation.
In 1964 Barbara founded the National Association for Health in the UK, of which she was President, as a front for all the Health Stores and for any product made as alternative medicine.
This health industry now enjoys a huge turnover each year, with one third going in export.

In January 1988 she received "La Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris", (The Gold Medal of Paris). This is the highest award to be given by the City of Paris for achievement - 25 million books sold in France.

In 1981 Barbara was made a Dame of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year's Honours List by Her Majesty the Queen, for her contribution to literature and for her work for the Community.

Good morning everybody - I got a phone call from my son at 4:00 this morning to tell me his wife is in labor. He could only talk for a minute - I thought wonderful, hope everything goes OK. An hour and a half later he called back and said his new baby girl was born, weighing 7 and 1/2 pounds and "she shot out like a freight train."

Men have such a charming way of saying things, don't they? LOL I'm excited about new grandbaby. This big

Funny Joanna "shocked that he's naked underneath his clothes"

I did see this morning that the royal family blocked the publication of the pictures in the papers in the UK so they used a stand in to recreate the picture! HA!

Also heard he was reprimanded by his military unit because of conduct unbecoming an officer? Or something like that...

Post by LornaDoone Thu 23 Aug 2012, 15:37

On a different note - (and off to work soon so won't see any responses till much later) but does anyone have any suggestions on how to get noisy neighbors to stop?

I've tried speaking to them myself - get nothing but lip from the young guy the gal who is the tenant is shacking up with. He's the "big man on campus" when I tried to talk to them and when their 78 year old neighbor who shares their wall spoke to them but to no avail.

I've spoken to the landlord who I know has called them several times.

I've called the police who have now come out 3 times but each time, by the time the police get here, they've quieted down enough that the police can't site them.

I did notice though that the guy who has no issue mouthing off to an older woman and a 78 year old, didn't want to open the door when the police came the first time - to the point that they had to bang on the side of the wall to his apartment until he came out. And then a second time he sent his "wife/girlfriend/whatever" out to deal with the police. So I'm starting to think that perhaps his immigration paperwork may not be up to snuff or perhaps non-existent.

I don't want to lower myself to their level and make noise in the mornings when I leave for work plus it would disturb the other tenants.

I don't want to move -- I've lived here over 30 years and I'm rent controlled so I have really inexpensive rent in comparison to anything else I could find and frankly, moving wouldn't guarantee that I'd be any less likely to find a quieter neighborhood but then I'd be paying more in rent.

It is getting to be quite an issue. The one neighbor who spoke up and said something was harassed by him in the small yard area they share behind their units, but unfortunately, there were no witnesses to it so now she's just decided she's going to move.

It just seems so unfair and frankly quite infuriating that people like this are so good at lying to officials and to the landlord and then have no qualms about trying to silence those who might speak up about their actions.

Heck, I've even tried video but the camera I have doesn't pick up the noise very well. Takes great pictures but the audio pick up sucks.

They don't seem to have regular work hours but that's not my problem. They are continually making noise during times that most others in the neighborhood are sleeping but I think I get the brunt of their noise because their door opens to a courtyard we all share and the sound reverberates thru it.

I'm at my wits end. Didn't get much sleep now for two nights in a row and this has been going on for months....

Any legal eagles out there with any suggestions? I live in the Los Angeles area as I know laws vary but I'm just tired of being tired all the time.

How bad has it been? I've mentioned this to my co-workers and yesterday I yawned in front of my supervisor and he says, "Neighbors keeping you up again?" All I could say was YES! Aaarrrggh!

While I don't know if litigation is an option for you, either against your neighbor or your apt./condo management firm, for sure you should be documenting all occurences of intrusive and distrubing noise. Time of occurence and nature thereof (ex. loud music, yelling, screaming, engines revving, etc.) In the event legal action is taken, your documentation will be invaluable to show a pattern of abuse.
Also, have you considered a petition signed by equally irritated and sleep deprived neighbors as a tool to apply pressure to the landlord to take aggressive action? If the management feels as if they could potentially lose several good tenants, they might sit up and take notice.
Also, document the day and time you actually spoke to your neighbors about the noise level. If it ever rises to the level of a courtroom, you will be asked if you took this step. It is eseential that you have in order to get some kind of injunction or civil relief.
Hope this helps some.

Here in UK the Local Authority will send someone out at the time of the noise to measure it on a decibels monitor.
Whether you can get hold of one to do your own readings or hire a good video camera with excellent pickup for sound or even one of those "spy" microphones that are used by journalists.
You really need to be the "passive aggressor" in this now and gather as much real evidence as you can.
And try very hard to keep the emotions out of it....easier said than done.
Have you got some good industrial ear plugs that are used by workers in very noisy environments ? They may help you get some
sleep Lorna. Good luck, I know it can become very stressful. flower

Lakin has some very good ideas there....and you can rant as much as you like here, don't forget !

Thanks so much! I was going to look into getting a better camera.

I documented the times and days that I had to call the police but didn't document the times I spoke to them. Darn it! I won't be speaking to them any further.

As to the other tenants - as i mentioned the 78 yr old is moving but "doesn't want to get involved" and I guess I don't blame her. One other tenant is a stay at home mom and don't get up early so she can sleep in and I guess it's not an issue for her. One tenant that it probably does effect is having his own issues about getting kicked out for non-payment so HE's not going to complain about anyone else. And my immediate next door neighbor is in the process of suing the landlord (long story there..) and she's also moving so there's no help from her either.

The last tenant is way in the back of the courtyard so I don't think he hears as much as I do as I'm just across from them. But I will continue to document issues, dates and times and occurances, whether I call the police or not and will look into that better camera!

Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks I think I will look into some sort of noise meter! Hopefully, something is available that is not too expensive.

I did get a suggestion from a co-worker. Considering how reluctant the man is to come to the door when the police are there - my co-worker suggested that he might have come in on a visitor visa and overstayed his return date. So I'll check on that - not sure how but I can always call the immigration service.

I hate going that route but look, if you want to come to a new country to have a better life then it would be nice if you obeyed the laws and kept a low profile if you did overstay your visa. But there are just some people who are so ingrained obnoxious that they do these kinds of things to bring attention to themselves and shoot themselves in the foot.

If they hadn't awakened me on so many occassions and played loud music so much I would have had no issues with them. I may find it highly offensive that he has on one occassion slapped his sig other around to the point that SHE called the police but it's HER choice to stay with her - I can't be interfing in that as much as I'd like to smack him around to see how he likes it.

But that their lives spill over into mine and affect my ability to function during the day that's when I have issue with their "rights."

Rights are great as long as you also consider the rights of others and abide by the laws of the land in which you live! Anyway, off the soap box but I'm so tired of dealing with these type of immature people. It just gets old!

No need to justify your actions to us here Lorna...you've put up with it.... and now the time has come for some action.

I suppose the "invite them round for coffee with some of your mates there too to ask for cooperation" option wouldn't work ?
Just a thought....

Lorna,
Just googled tenant's organizations and this was the initial offering. I note on the page are several links for California communities. I didn't go any further to see what services they offer, but perhaps contacting one of them closest to your area will be a first networking step toward a solution. Surely similar situations have occurred elsewhere. Good luck!

Thanks Lakin!

I just looked I know one of those organizations was shut down several years ago. But another food for thought resource! :-)

I think the time for coffee cooperation is long past.

it's too bad they moved in where they did instead of on the other side. There are units that don't face inward toward the courtyard and had they moved into one of the units on the street side those of us in the courtyard would probably not be affected by their inconsiderate actions.

The unit that came emtpy AFTER they moved in was just taken by an eldery lady with a little dog so she might have been a better fit in the unit the noisemakers are located in since then she would be sharing the wall with the 78 yr old - perfect match! HA! Of course with my luck she'd have one of those yappy dogs that barked all night so it would probably still be an issue!

I'm sure it will get sorted out - one way or another!

Anyone hear if George needs a tenant for his guest house? HA!!

HELP NEEDED !!!! headbang

I now have an iPad 3..... and while all the web sites I like to go on regularly load in exactly the same way as on my MacBook Pro this one doesn't....it's missing the top part where I can sign in and the left hand side where the rolling headlines are....grrrrrrrrrrr.

I've tried the "pinching and finger squeezing" on the screen....everything else loads as normal....even "les frenchies" site does....so please can anyone give me any advice ?? pityviolin

Yipeeeeee.....my husband has today solved my problem of my iPad not loading the forum correctly.
Apparently it wasn't loading the classic version.
He spotted the word classic at the bottom of the page, in very small print, clicked it and voila...up came the full version so that I could sign it at last on my iPad !!

Yahooooo
