“There is little doubt that George Floyd was murdered,” writes George Clooney. “This is our pandemic. It infects all of us, and in 400 years we’ve yet to find a vaccine.”

So what do we do now?
Is it 1992? Did we just hear a jury tell us that the white cops that we watched on tape hundreds of times beating Rodney King weren’t guilty of their obvious crimes? Is it 2014, when Eric Garner was executed for selling cigarettes by a white cop who strangled him as we watched? His words “I can’t breathe” forever etched into our minds? How many times have we seen people of color killed by police? Tamir Rice, Philando Castile, Laquan McDonald. There is little doubt that George Floyd was murdered. We watched as he took his last breath at the hands of four police officers. Now we see another defiant reaction to the systemic cruel treatment of a portion of our citizens like we saw in 1968, 1992, and 2014. We don’t know when these protests will subside. We hope and pray that no one else will be killed. But we also know that very little will change.
As most of us wonder what we can do, I remember listening to Sarah Koenig, who spent a year just covering trials in a Cleveland courthouse, sum up her experience. She gives those of us who feel helpless a roadmap:
Let’s all accept that something’s gone wrong. Let’s make that our premise "
We’ve all heard the stats—that we here in the United States imprison a vastly higher percentage of our population than any other country in the world. We are number one. The numbers are well-documented, wildly out of whack, and unprecedented in our history.
Also well-documented—inequity. Every joint in the skeleton of our criminal justice system is greased by racial discrimination. Compared to white people who’ve committed the same crime and who have similar criminal histories, black people and other people of color are arrested more often. They’re charged more harshly, given higher bails, offered worse plea deals. They’re handed longer prison sentences, and their probation is more often revoked […]
These numbers aren’t floating above us in the sky. They’re alive all over the country.
We all know it’s true.
The anger and the frustration we see playing out once again in our streets is just a reminder of how little we’ve grown as a country from our original sin of slavery. The fact that we aren’t actually buying and selling other human beings anymore is not a badge of honor. We need systemic change in our law enforcement and in our criminal justice system. We need policymakers and politicians that reflect basic fairness to all of their citizens equally. Not leaders that stoke hatred and violence as if the idea of shooting looters could ever be anything less than a racial dog whistle. Bull Connor was more subtle.
This is our pandemic. It infects all of us, and in 400 years we’ve yet to find a vaccine. It seems we’ve stopped even looking for one and we just try to treat the wound on an individual basis. And we sure haven’t done a very good job of that. So this week, as we’re wondering what it’s going to take to fix these seemingly insurmountable problems, just remember we created these issues so we can fix them. And there is only one way in this country to bring lasting change: Vote.

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
The false perceptions imposed on people with African descent are vast with a looooooooooonnnnnngggggggggg history. The truth is man do not have the god given right to murder.
Lasting change can only come about when TRUTH is applied.
President Trump is not the problem and voting can't change hearts and minds. The violence imposed on George Floyd is not because Trump is President or Congress is majority Democrat.
Thank you George Clooney for speaking so eloquently on the subject!

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
So is it okay for Donald Trump to say 'when the looting starts, the shooting starts'!? Not inflammatory at all? I see Joe Biden went out to meet the protesters....is Trump still hiding behind twitter? Learned today that his attention span means that he is 'so over' the pandemic he's completely lost interest. I think I knew that when he handed all supply arrangements to his inept son-in-law who will almost probably auction to the highest bidder
So pleased George said this in his usual measured way and donated to Black Lives Matter.

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
Joe Biden's comment "you aint black" is beyond ignorant. If one could be black enough, how would he know?
President Obama, a man of African descent signed the diabolical Health Care Law that extends health care workers the legal right to extend substandard/lethal health care.
Trump certainly has a history that includes racial bias, however the violence imposed on people of African descent has deep roots that poseidon Biden, who don't know the difference the ACA and Medicare, CAN'T RESOLVE.

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
Trump is a big part of the problem from day 1 he has allowed racists to come front and center.
He has no clue how to conduct himself or how to calm a volatile situation. He simply doesn't care
he is a racist.
Pan I'm o.k I saw protests on Sunday from my terrace no shots fired but there were a few arrests.

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
PAN - The daytime protests are fairly peaceful. Most of the trouble seems to happen after dark, but with an 8PM curfew there was less last night than before.
Meanwhile there was a massive memorial gathering in downtown Brooklyn this afternoon that drew more than 5,000 people. Totally peaceful and inspiring. The participants are marching over the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan. There are apparently other events scheduled, but I'm not sure what they might be. So far no problems with the police and I don't expect there will be until curfew, when some of the protesters will refuse to leave, as they did last night. Apparently entitlement is rampant throughout our culture.

One of the things that's struck me is that these demos are huge - and I sense the cause is justified over the law of the curfew - combined with the self control it has required for over a month+ for a lockdown starting to be relaxed....and lots of young people

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
Im going to ramble a bit and may go on too long but first ...I’m doing fine PAN. Thanks. I haven’t posted in a while but hope all of you are staying well and managing safe distancing whenever you go out. And wearing your masks!
I wanted to go downtown and join the protests over the last few days but I just can’t take the chance with the pandemic. I live in a suburb 10 mins from DC. You’d never know such unrest was going on just across the bridge from where I live. Except I hear the helicopters overhead frequently.
I had the same thought as George. Racism in our country is far worse than any world pandemic. And racism will not be erased from this country. There is no vaccine. Not in my lifetime and probably not in my children’s’ either. Hopefully all of these energized young people will take the lead and help find ways to at least fight for more equal justice for minorities. They need to get involved in local politics and change the face of our political system. So glad George shared his thoughts about what’s going on. He’s spot on.
Trump is a racist. Period. He has caused chaos and division. He has abandoned taking care of the whole country. It’s all about his base. He has basically washed his hands of managing a national response to the pandemic. To me it’s a dereliction of his duty as a President. What he did the other day by sending in the military to push back peaceful protesters and then stand in front of a church holding what he considers a prop in his hand was obnoxious and despicable. He has violated the rule of law multiple times. It’s time to take out the trash. Someone wrote that about Trump the other day. Very fitting.

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
PAN - The crowd here was estimated at 5,000 before the march into Manhattan, where they joined with others who had been waiting in Foley Square and then marched further uptown. Being in a crowd like that is energizing and exciting, so I can see why the protesters want to ignore the curfew and keep going - I've been there myself.
The thing is, the police caught hell for not stopping the looters from doing so much damage the other night. The curfew was instated so that they could focus on preventing looting and property damage instead of doing crowd control. The protesters had all day to make their point. Insisting on staying on after curfew and making the cops' lives harder isn't really helping make things better.

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
It is my understanding "Black Lives Matter" is funded by the same people who currently fund the KKK. Do you know who is funding Black Lives Matter?
It is my understanding Black Lives Matter is designed to further perpetuate tension between the Police and the African/Black American community.
Tell me something. Why don't Black Lives Matter show up when an African/Black American is murdered by a gang member? Frankly I don't think "Black Lives Matter" benefactors care if gang members murder African Americans; that's why they don't show up.
Tell me something. What has the Black Caucus done to do address African/Black Americans murdered by gang members. Frankly I don't think the people who fund their campaigns care if African/Black Americans are murdered by gang members.
Bottom line, my position is the Black Lives Matter movement is there to feed the tension, they are not there to extend viable solutions to those in Law Enforcement who believe the rule of law do not apply to African/Black Americans; those in Law Enforcement who believe murdering African Americans are justified killing. Tell me, why would "Black Lives Matter" take a knee? The very action that reflect the means used to murder a defenseless human being.
Please don't misunderstand me. The actions of the man who murdered George Floyd and those in authority who stood by and watched should be prosecuted for MURDER. Do I think there are some in Law Enforcement who think African/Black Americans are less than human; yes I do. Do I think the officers involved in the murder of George Floyd is a reflection of the body of Law Enforcement who take an oath to protect and serve, no I don't.
Solution: We as a country have to address the myth, that African Americans are less than human. All three levels of Government: Judicial, Executive, and Legislative branches of government have to MAKE CLEAR people of African descent are fully human. Education has to reflect the institution of slavery as Justified Law was err. The TREATMENT imposed and slaves endured as a result of the institution of slavery was NOT BIBLICAL and NOT JUSTIFIED under any rule of law. Civil rights legislation has to be "Human" right legislation and has to be amended as the LAW of the LAND. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness under the Constitution is in a Human right. as well as a Civil right.
In the Love of Jesus
The right to live as a same sex couple could have been extended without re-defining marriage as outlined in prop. 8. We didn’t redefine women as men to extend civil rights to women. We did not have to redefine marriage to extend same sex couples the legal choice to live as a couple. Before you ALL jump on my case, I know George Clooney supported prop.8; we agree to disagree on this position.

Just to be clear: I don’t want the LGBTQ to misunderstand my position here. I do not support the Supreme Court decision to extend Gay marriage as defined in prop 8. The LGBTQ concerns can not in any way shape form or fashion compare to 400 years of unthinkable harm imposed on people of African descent in this country. And can NEVER be compared to the unthinkable treatment and murder suffered during the Civil rights movement, that extended civil rights to people of African descent.

Where do you get the information on which you base your opinion? You say you understand it to be the truth. On what is that understanding based?
I wouldn't presume to make the kinds of statements you made as I haven't investigated the situation, nor do I have personal knowledge of where BLM gets its funding - although I have seen requests for donations made to the general public.

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
I've learned when things don't make sense they are probably not true.
The amount of Black men murdered by the police and the amount of black men murdered by people other than police is a telling statistic. You only care about people murdered by police?
Black Lives Matter is dedicated to the stand against police brutality. Why did not show up at a ralley to save the statute of a Confederate military leader. What did that have to do with police brutality? I would presume they showed up to bolster the position of a racial divided.
One thing we now know, there is no racial divide. Our Country is standing together all races, all ages, men, women, old, and young are standing together on holding those who murder accountable for their actions.
You all have every right to NOT believe Black Lives Matter is funded by the same people who fund the kkk, I do.
By the way, I'm not surprised you all have focused on who I believe fund Black Lives Matter as oppose to, talking about viable solutions to the unjustified 400 years of violence imposed on people of African descent in the United States of America.

This country is even more divide than before, the racists aren't giving up or changing.
The only way to change things is to change people's mind set and that is impossible if they don't want to change.

Please don't play games. The conversation you started was not about solutions. It was about who funds BLM. I have yet to see your solutions to the problem of race relations.
As far as who's divided, it's the people of this country. If you think there are no more racists because so many people of all races turned out for the protests you're mistaken. The racists stayed home.

Lizzy my post included a solution. What got Annemarie, Pan, and your attention was who I believe fund Black Lives Matter.
A country divided means half the country believes one way and the other half believes something else. No I don't believe half of our country is racists and stayed home. Our Country and Countries across the globe stand in agreement on a defenseless human being murdered; that's evident. The fact you think half the country is racist, I find very interesting.

As always Trevor Noah gets to the point clearly and without political rancor. His explanation of reparations was beautifully done.
Ladybug - 1. Your "solution" is hardly new and has proved ineffective. "Solutions" need to be more realistic and functional.
2. "Divided" means separated into parts - not necessarily two equal parts. I certainly do not believe that half the people in the US are racist. I do, however, believe that many of them are ignorant.

You think it is difficult for the people who govern us to acknowledge people of African Descent are fully human?
You think it is difficult for law makers to Amend the Civil Rights as the Law of the Land?
You think it is difficult for educators to teach the truth: the institution of slavery was NOT Biblical, nor right by any legal definition and the abuse suffered was unthinkable wrongdoing?
There is no place on earth where every person thinks the same way. By your definition, if there is a small descension we are divided. A small group of people who think differently than the majority does not create a divided country. Clearly the reaction of people across the globe show a single mindedness regarding this case and call for change in the bigger picture.

So to the point, Ladybugheart, what is your solution?
Going back on what we all know is old ground and resentment, having asked what we think is clearly not satisfactory to you.
So please do give us your ideas and how you would go forward.

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
I went back and re-read your post. I think your "suggestion" is political theater. It wouldn't change anything in the real world. We are all part of the human race - none of us more fully human than any other. Do you really think it would change anything for the better for the government to make some sort of special proclamation or ruling that people of African descent are fully human? Do you really think rational people don't know that? Do you think the African-American community would appreciate it?
Because in this country we have separation of church and state, public education cannot and should not teach anything in terms of what your bible, or any other, condones. That is the job of your church. There are many religions in this country which have their own sacred texts which may not agree with your bible. Must their opinions be taught as well? Educators in our public schools do teach about the evils of slavery and its effects on our culture and do so without connection to religious belief.
Finally, if someone dissents from an opinion they are divided from that opinion. That many people may hold an opinion does not mean there is not division. There is division unless there is universal agreement.
Have a nice day!

1. Yes. Any person who knows the scope of how slavery was shaped in this country will appreciate documented legislative clarity.LizzyNY wrote:I went back and re-read your post. 2. I did not include the Bible for public education. It was included for Bible Teacher/Preacher/Scholars who teach/believe the institution of slavery in this country was/is Biblically correct.
3. You were the one who stated our country is divided, not I.

Re: George Clooney: America’s Greatest Pandemic Is Anti-Black Racism
Heartlove rules and laws will not change anything as far as racism. We already have rules and laws yet the police don't follow them.
There are laws against discrimination yet we are still discriminated against. There are states and towns in the U.S where black people can't buy a home. There are still restaurants in the south that won't serve black people.
Human decency and respect aren't things you need a law for , people know how to treat others. Racists do not care about those things black people are nothing not human less than animals and should be treated as such.
Racism is in grained in people some can change but only if they choose too. No law is going to make people who hate change.

It is exactly this kind of lazy, parroting, semantically racist rhetoric that has kept me away from here this past week. Being part of a productive discussion requires you to leave the Unite the Right and Boogaloo Boi talking points at the door - or better yet, in the trash where they belong. You are not helping. This and your other posts are not sincere contributions to the dialogue. This is too serious for your particular form of interactive theater. It's bait, and nobody has time for the bullshit.

When Black Lives Matter starts focusing on the loss of life across the African/Black American community then I will change my dialog.
When they show up at a rally for statue and don't show up for Mothers who have loss their children as a result of gang violence I seriously question their motives. I'm not going to stop speaking the truth whether you agree with me or not.
By the way, I included solutions that I believe can lead to resolve, that's missing from your comments.

Ladybug - PAN posted a link to the BLM homepage. I suggest you visit it and read about who they are and what they're doing before you post about them again. You might not be as well informed about them as you think.

Laws won't make racists like us or respect us hate is hate.
As I said above there are laws yet they are ignored. Racists don't care about laws or rules.
Clarity for whom we as black people know about slavery so do white people it makes no difference and it never will.

Racism is a learned behavior, it's not something your born with.
Taking legislative steps builds a foundation that racists/racism can no longer stand on.

Racism will only stop when people change their mind set. No legislation will change their minds.

If you can't believe what you read then I guess you have to live things yourself to have an opinion or you just have to make things up. Either way it limits your ability to have an opinion on pretty much everything.

I said you can't believe everything you read. I have many years of research on this topic. I've been involved in grass roots as well as main stream party politics since I was 16years old. I've watched the movement of specialize interest and how the operate; my opinions in this thread are from years of research.LizzyNY wrote:If you can't believe what you read then I guess you have to live things yourself to have an opinion or you just have to make things up.
