Government of Ukraine Announces the Creation of a Legal Task Force on Accountability for Crimes Committed in Ukraine

The government of Ukraine today announced the formation of a legal Task Force on Accountability for Crimes Committed in Ukraine to support Ukraine in delivering justice for victims of international crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.

The Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova, commented: "We are grateful to this esteemed group for their support for Ukraine. Their assistance and guidance will be invaluable in the process of securing justice for Ukrainian victims and rebuilding our state."
Amal Clooney added: ‘I am honoured to have been asked by the government of Ukraine to be a member of their legal task force on accountability. Ukrainians deserve to see perpetrators held to account and to recover compensation for the horrific abuses they are suffering. I am privileged to be working alongside such a distinguished group of lawyers and experts in this endeavour to ensure that nobody is above the law and that survivors will have their day in court.’

The government of Ukraine today announces the formation of a legal Task Force on Accountability for Crimes Committed in Ukraine to support Ukraine in delivering justice for victims of international crimes committed by Russia in our country.
The task force is comprised of some of the world’s leading international human rights lawyers: Amal Clooney and Baroness Helena Kennedy QC of Doughty Street Chambers, Richard Hermer QC, Tim Otty QC, Philippa Webb, and Lord Neuberger, the former President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.
The task force will also include legal experts from U.S. firm Covington & Burling LLP, led by Nikhil Gore, the French firm Sygna Partners, led by Luke Vidal, as well as the Withers firm, led by Emma Lindsay. Each of these firms is already representing Ukraine, including at the International Court of Justice. 
The task force will be supported by leading academics in the field of international humanitarian law including Professor Marko Milanovic (University of Nottingham) and Professor Andrew Clapham (Graduate Institute, Geneva) as well as the Centre for International Governance and Dispute Resolution at King’s College London, the Clooney Foundation for Justice and the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute. 
All members of the task force and the supporting lawyers and academics will carry out their work on a pro bono basis.
The remit of the task force will encompass advice on proposals for accountability including through the United Nations and regional organisations; advice and potential representation relating to civil and criminal cases (including under universal jurisdiction laws) to secure accountability and reparations in national jurisdictions; and strategic guidance on Ukraine’s cooperation with the International Criminal Court. 
Microsoft Corporation will serve as the technology partner to the task force and will provide technological assistance free of charge to help with securing, analysing and sharing evidence of international crimes with appropriate authorities.[/size]

Wow, that's really a great appointment.

Yep. Given the appalling news coming out of Ukraine for the last couple of days it's 
     probably likely to be huge, especially given the fact that it would have be evidence based  
     with witnesses.

     But it looks like a brilliant team of people who are  involved in this,  including Baroness             Kennedy and Lord Neuberger

Sadly- they have their work cut out for them

This seems like a massive undertaking, but with so many legal minds devoting their resources to bringing Putin and Russia to justice maybe there's a chance they'll succeed - especially if they can provide evidence of genocide. That war  crimes were committed has already been proven by the video records coming out of Ukraine.

If charges are brought against Putin by the ICC or some other body, I wonder if he will really suffer any consequences. I assume any trial would have to be held with Putin in absentia, since I can't see him voluntarily leaving Russia to stand trial. I'm guessing any repercussions would have to come from within Russia, and the way things look right now that doesn't seem likely.

True Lizzy what exactly can anyone do to that monster.

But I think the original criminal Al Bashir is now in prison in Sudan (he got two years!) but is or has been handed over to the International Criminal Court....

PAN - I wish the two could be compared, but I can't see Putin ever turning himself over to the ICC for trial. I think it would take a massive upheaval in the Russian government for him to be either tried there or given over to an international body for trial.

Russia might throw some of their military leaders under the bus, but I can't see Putin ever taking the blame for any of this. In that respect he's like his protege Drumpf. Somehow nothing seems to stick - no matter how much proof there is and no matter what we see with our own eyes!

Yep, I agree - and the world is very soon going to realise that China and Russia are in an alliance across the globe - but my point was that Darfur (and the beginning of George's involvement in the area) was in 2006 and it was only last year that Al Bashir was removed from prison in Sudan to the ICC - and now this other character is before the courts in Khartoum and no doubt the fact that there is no money available in Sudan to cover the costs of these things doesn't help. 

And that is why human rights lawyers like Amal do not charge for their services in similar cases.

Interesting footnote - I see that many oligarch yachts are now based in the Maldives, where former President Nasheed (another Amal client) is now out of office and so would not be able to sanction them..

PAN - I'm confused. Is it your point that it may take years for Putin to be brought to justice? If so, I'm afraid he may die of old age before it happens - unless the Russian people act against him, which doesn't seem likely right now. In the future, who knows? My crystal ball is broken.

Re: the Russia/China alliance - I don't think it will come as a surprise to many if it actually solidifies. I think China will do whatever works best for China. Whether that's an alliance with Russia or not remains to be seen. I'm sure the Chinese government is very interested in how the situation in Ukraine turns out.

Right on every count, Lizzy. It is already solidified. At the current rate of global warming the Arctic will not be ice for very long - and when it melts (causing appalling flooding as it does)  this will be a direct route through for both Russia and China to move into the Atlantic.

Unfortunately we don't seem very concerned given the number of flights (and huge queues) over Easter - and those nice air conditioning units we insist on using when it's a bit warm.....

And yes, it will take years for Putin to be brought to justice - and al Bashir is a prime example: it's taken 15 years....
