Back in May, we reported that George Clooney was set to collaborate with Steven Soderbergh yet again on a new film “No Sudden Move” (then titled “Kill Switch”). News of these two reuniting for a film was exciting itself. However, when the formal cast was announced for Soderbergh’s upcoming crime thriller, Clooney was nowhere to be found. So, what happened?

According to an interview with Deadline, George Clooney talked about the circumstances that led to him leaving the cast of “No Sudden Move,” and sadly, it has nothing to do with the project itself or scheduling issues. Instead, it’s all about Clooney worrying about the health of his son and the idea of working on a film set during a pandemic.

“I’ve got a son with asthma,” said Clooney. “It’s not like I can just go taking any chances. I had to drop out of the Soderberg film [‘No Sudden Move’] that he was shooting because of that, which was a bummer because it’s a great part. It looks like I would have gotten to work with Don Cheadle and everybody again. It really looked like fun.”

Of course, we don’t know which role in the film Clooney would have taken. However, the current cast does include Cheadle, as well as Benicio Del Toro, David Harbour, Amy Seimetz, Jon Hamm, Ray Liotta, Kieran Culkin, Brendan Fraser, Noah Jupe, Bill Duke, Frankie Shaw, and Julia Fox, as well as Matt Damon in a small role. We’re going to go out on a limb and say that Clooney probably wasn’t going to occupy a role for Jupe, Shaw, Seimetz, or Fox. So, that does narrow it down, but not by a lot. Either way, it’s a shame that this pandemic has forced Clooney out of the film, which would have been his long-awaited reunion with Soderbergh.

Soderbergh and Clooney originally worked together on the ‘Ocean’s’ franchise, as well as “Out of Sight.” They were both briefly attached to a period version of “The Man from UNCLE” back in the early 2010s, but that fell apart. Eventually, that film was reimagined with Guy Ritchie as the filmmaker. So, for now, we’ll have to wait and see what project will find Soderbergh and Clooney back together again.
