[size=40]Steppenwolf Theatre postpones George Clooney project, adds streaming shows

CHICAGO TRIBUNE |

SEP 02, 2020 AT 12:01 PM

Steppenwolf Theatre announced Wednesday that it is postponing its staging of “Good Night, and Good Luck,” a high-profile project based on George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Oscar-nominated 2005 screenplay, until “a future season.” The play, dealing with the notorious Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy and the newsman Edward R. Murrow, was slated to open in December and was seen as a likely candidate for Broadway.
That change means Steppenwolf has nothing live on its schedule until “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter,” which is hopes to stage at an unspecified date in the first part of next year.
However, Steppenwolf shrewdly combined this announcement with a slate of new virtual programming, lasting the entire season and aimed at satisfying members and supporters and using the talents of its storied ensemble members. Much of the focus is on new work. Aside from a piece by Sam Shepard, who died in 2017, the entire virtual season is comprised of work penned by artists of color, many of whom are emerging talents.
Upcoming projects include “What is Left, Burns,” a new play by James Ijames, directed by Whitney White and featuring K. Todd Freeman and Jon Michael Hill. The piece, streaming in November, involves two academics, former lovers at different stages of their careers.

In December, Isaac Gómez and Lili-Anne Brown will co-direct Gómez’s “Wally World,” a comedy about department store employees toiling at Christmas. The cast will include Audrey Francis, Sandra Marquez, Karen Rodriguez and Sydney Charles.
Carrie Coon will star in January in a virtual piece by Rajiv Joseph. Cryptically titled “Red Folder,” the play involves a first grader and his binder.
In February, Steppenwolf will produce “Duchess! Duchess! Duchess!,” a play concerning an upcoming royal wedding, penned by Vivian J.O. Barnes, a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego.
In April, Steppenwolf will stream “Where We Stand” by Donnetta Lavinia Grays, a solo show produced live just prior to the pandemic at the WP Theatre in New York. Grays will film the piece anew at Steppenwolf.
Finally, in June, Ian Barford will direct Randall Arney and William Petersen in the late Sam Shepard’s “Ages of the Moon,” a Beckettian piece from 2009 about two old friends.
The virtual productions can only be bought as a membership package to all six shows. Existing Steppenwolf members (once known as subscribers) will receive the programming as part of their existing purchase.

That's such a shame, but I guess inevitable at the moment.
