Miguel Ferrer Dies: ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ & ‘Crossing Jordan’ Star Was 61

Miguel Ferrer, who had played Owen Granger on NCIS: Los Angeles since 2012 and co-starred with Jill Hennessy on CBS’ Crossing Jordan, died today of cancer. He was 61.

The son of Oscar-winning Cyrano de Bergerac actor Jose Ferrer, he also was to reprise his role as FBI Agent Albert Rosenfeld on David Lynch’s revival Twin Peaks on Showtime.

A veteran of 40-plus movies and scoreds of TV shows, Ferrer launched his career in the early 1980s with small guest shots on such series as Magnum, P.I., CHiPS and Cagney & Lacey and features including Heartbreaker, The Man Who Wasn’t There and Star Trek: III: The Search for Spock. He would go on to focus mostly on TV throughout that decade before landing the Twin Peaks role in 1990.

The Santa Monica native toplined the short-lived Stephen J. Cannell-creator cop drama Broken Badges in 1991 and also starred in Lynch’s 1950s romp On the Air the following year. He appeared in a number of features during the 1990s but continued to star on short-run TV series including Fallen Angels and Al Franken’s LateLine.

In 2001, Ferrer landed a role in the NBC drama Crossing Jordan, starring opposite Hennessy’s Boston medical examiner. The show was among the top 20 in the year-end ratings for 2001-02 and remained on the air until 2007.

After that series wrapped, Ferrer starred opposite Michelle Ryan in Bionic Woman, which lasted nine episodes, co-starred with Ally Walker and Tisha Campbell-Martin in the LAPD drama The Protector in 2011. But his next role would be his biggest.

In 2012, Ferrer joined the cast of CBS’ popular spinoff NCIS: Los Angeles, opposite Chris O’Donnell, LL Cool J, Linda Hunt and others. He came in early on as the assistant director of NCIS and at first was a hard-as-nails unpleasant sort to the team. But during the course of the ensuing seasons, his Owen Granger warmed up to them and became a friend. There has been an ongoing mole-hunt storyline in the current eighth season of NCIS: LA, and Granger was stabbed while in police custody in the most recent episode that aired Sunday.

Ferrer is survived by his wife Lori, sons Lukas and Rafi and his brothers and sisters.

That's really sad, I always loved him in 'Crossing Jordan'.

That is very sad .

Another wonderful actor gone too soon. I saw the last episode of NCIS:LA and thought he looked really haggard, but didn't think he would still be working if he was that ill. This really is an awful start to the new year. Since the Clooney family is so close, I wonder if they'll all be in LA for the funeral. So sad.

So sad to hear this.  He was a solid actor.  Nice words from our guy.

I remember when he was on an episode of ER.  It was the first season I think.  He played a patient who coincidentally was diagnosed with cancer.  He had a very touching scene.

he was in Kentucky shooting a film and George had a small part in it.

There are some pix on eastnews.pl of Samer Alamuddin leaving Heathrow today, with a caption saying he'd been staying in London with the Clooneys for a month. 

Don't ask me how they know, but if so I can imagine George going back and forward to LA to him. Vaguely remember him being on red carpets for George's films.........

PAN - Not quite making the connection between her brother being in London and George going to LA - unless you mean he was trying to get away from her family? (What's the saying? "Fish and guests stink after three days"?)

No, Lizzy. Not sure I figured it out myself! Maybe I was thinking she might have to stay in London and so if she was pregnant it would be good that her brother was there to stay with her rather than fly back and forth to LA

Just thought it was a bit bizarre to see him and the caption.........he could have been staying half an hour up the road with his stepmother........

Miguel Ferrer, Star of NCIS: Los Angeles and Crossing Jordan, Dies at 61

“NCIS: Los Angeles” will pay tribute to the late actor Miguel Ferrer next March. Ferrer, who starred for seven seasons on the CBS drama, died last month at the age of 61 of throat cancer.

The March 5 episode of “NCIS: Los Angeles” will feature a version of the Bob Dylan song “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” performed by Ferrer’s band the Jenerators and sung by Ferrer. A title card remembering Ferrer will be displayed at the episode’s end.
Ferrer was the son of singer Rosemary Clooney and actor Jose Ferrer, and also first cousin to George Clooney.

In a statement last month following Ferrer’s death, “NCIS: Los Angeles” showrunner R. Scott Gemmill said, “Today, ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ lost a beloved family member. Miguel was a man of tremendous talent who had a powerful dramatic presence on screen, a wicked sense of humor, and a huge heart.”
Ferrer’s other live-action TV roles included “Twin Peaks,” “Shannon’s Deal,” “Broken Badges,” “Crossing Jordan,” “Bionic Woman,” and “Desperate Housewives.” He was a voice actor on films, TV shows, and videogames, including “Mulan,” “Superman: The Animated Series,” “Robot Chicken,” “American Dad!,” “The Spectacular Spider-Man,” and “Halo 3.” His live-action films included “RoboCop,” “Iron Man 3,” “The Manchurian Candidate,” “Sunshine State,” “Hard Ride to Hell,” and “Mr. Magoo.”
