EXCLUSIVE: Paramount is understood to be closing on a US deal in the $10m range for Suburbicon, the upcoming George Clooney-Coen brothers reunion that has been one of the most sought-after titles of the EFM.

The studio pounced after Clooney dropped in to meet with buyers in Berlin yesterday (Thurs) ahead of festival opener Hail, Caesar!, directed by the Coens.
Black Bear Pictures fully finances Suburbicon, a dark comedy that peels back the horror of a suburban locale and will star Matt Damon and Julianne Moore based on a screenplay by the Coens.

Joel Silver will produce via his Silver Pictures alongside Clooney and his Smokehouse Pictures partner Grant Heslov, and Teddy Schwarzman of Black Bear.

CAA represents US rights and Bloom handles international sales at the EFM.
Paramount and the financiers had not returned calls at time of writing.

The studio confirmed today at the Berlin Film Festival that it has acquired U.S. rights to the dramedy, which will star Matt Damon and Julianne Moore.

Paramount Pictures has closed a deal for U.S. rights to George Clooney's Suburbicon, the studio announced today at the Berlin Film Festival.
Clooney will direct the film, written by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, and set to star Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Josh Brolin and Oscar Isaac. A dramedy, the film is set in the quiet family town of Suburbicon, where a home invasion causes a picture-perfect family to turn to blackmail, revenge and betrayal.
Clooney, who was in Berlin for the screening of the opening night film Hail, Caesar!, in which he stars, presented Suburbicon to buyers at the European Film Market on Feb. 11 and it quickly stood out as one of the market's hot titles, with Paramount moving in to take the U.S. rights for about $10 million, according to sources.
The film, which is to begin shooting this October in Los Angeles, is being produced by Joel Silver on behalf of Silver Pictures, Clooney and Grant Heslov on behalf of Smokehouse Pictures, and Teddy Schwarzman on behalf of Black Bear Pictures, who will finance the project.
In announcing the acquisition, Brad Grey, Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO, said in a statement: “George has assembled a stellar project, starting with Joel and Ethan’s great script, a wildly talented cast lead by Matt and Julianne, and an extraordinary producing team with George, Grant, Joel and Teddy. We are both proud and excited to be releasing Suburbicon in the U.S. and look forward to this picture with great anticipation.”
CAA handled the U.S. sale, with Bloom handling international sales. Paramount's Eben Davidson and attorney David Miercort represented the studio in the deal.

You're right, Nicky!
But did you ever get a chance to see him when he was filming in Berlin? I mean, he filmed 'Monuments Men' for quite some time in my area, but everything I heard was that he was protected so well that nobody could get nearby. And when he showed up it was unexpected so it was just by chance...

Well done George! Great cast and a reliable studio distribution.

Matt Damon and Julianne Moore are attached to the crime comedy that's already been picked up for the U.S. by Paramount and is expected to close more worldwide sales later on Monday.

The George Clooney-helmed Suburbicon, considered one of the hottest projects in the Berlin market, has sold to eOne for the U.K. after its splashy domestic deal to Paramount.
Bloom locked in a slew of sales around the world, including: Germany (Tele München/Concorde); Spain (Tri-Pictures S.A.); Italy (Leone Films); Latin America (Sun Distribution); Canada (Elevation); Greece (Odeon); Hong Kong, (Bravos); Scandinavia (MisLabel); Romania (Odeon); Turkey (Bir); Korea (Woosung); Japan (Tohokushinka Film Corporation); India (PVR); Taiwan (Filmware); Czech Republic (AQS); Poland (Monolith); Australia (Roadshow); Former Yugoslavia (Blitz); Middle East (Salim Ramia).
Clooney, in town for the premiere of opening night film Hail, Caesar!, charmed buyers at a presentation Thursday about his directorial project. A slew of distributors put in bids, with Paramount winning the domestic rights.

Currently in pre-production, Joel Silver will produce under his Silver Pictures banner alongside Clooney and Grant Heslov under their Smokehouse Pictures label, and Teddy Schwarzman for Black Bear Pictures. Black Bear Pictures is fully financing the project.
Bloom handled the film's international rights at the market, while CAA repped U.S. rights.

This is exciting...The premise sounds like the TV series Fargo Season 2-which I consider as the best TV mini-series last year...Gosh I've got to love this! I love the Coens and their script must be better than the TV show they produced! The main character in Fargo S02 insanely resembles Matt Damon and here we got the REAL Matt Damon!

The film centers on the Lodge family, who live in a suburban community of smiling young families nestled in the heart of Middle America. Their lives are turned upside down when a home invasion gone wrong is responsible for the shocking death of little Nicky Lodge’s mother. An unlikely and highly suspicious series of events consumes the Lodge household as the family descends deeper into a web of betrayal, adultery and blackmail.

“Suburbicon” has sold out in almost all of the international territories, said Alex Walton of the film’s sales company Bloom. “The U.S. deal was of major importance,” he said, adding that without it, “Suburbicon” would have sold but not as effectively within the timeframe of the market.
