George Clooney: My Marriage to Amal 'Changed Everything'

At the Disneyland premiere for his upcoming film Tomorrowland, George Clooney talked about the way his wife, Amal, has affected his perspective on things.

"All I know is that it sort of changed everything in terms of what I thought my future – my personal future – was going to be," he told PEOPLE when asked how connecting with Amal, 37, a distinguished human rights lawyer, changed his vision for the future.

"But I've always been an optimist about the world," the actor, 54, continued. 

"I wasn’t always completely optimistic about how it was going to work out personally for me. But now I am."


The couple, who attended the film's Saturday premiere at the Anaheim, California, theme park, has had an eventful week.

On Wednesday, they celebrated his birthday with an intimate gathering at his L.A. home.

The actor's production partner Grant Heslov, Cindy Crawford, and her husband Rande Gerber, were in attendance at the cocktail party, along with about 50 other guests.

Asked by reporters on Saturday about how he rang in his first birthday as a married man, he responded: "By drinking, unfortunately."

I'm glad George finds back his optimism. inpersonal life at this age. Never too late to pursue. the happiness. Congrats on them.

Amal is wonderful, Amal is smart, Amal is good ... George really wants to convince us that he is in love with Amal. I think "he pushed it"

I don't think he wants or needs to convince anyone he knows what he has and is happy. He knew people wanted to know about Amal and is is not avoiding the questions. I love hearing him speak like this for so long I think all his fans wanted him to settle down and be happy and he really is good for him and Amal.

Most men who love the women they marry would say the same things.  And if they don't they should.  George doesn't have to to say much of anything about Amal if he didn't want to.  No need to convince anyone.  I think his words are sincere.

He can't win either way (and I realise I'm being unfair here). If he says nothing, it's proof he's not happy and if he says he's happy, well of course, he would say that!

One thing I AM happy about is that for the first time that I can remember, he's actually talking about the woman standing next to him. He was always stumm on the subject of his relationships unless really really pressured to comment in which case he'd come out with a bland statement like "we're happy" or similar.

For the first time ever, he actually talks about his wife and about his relationship and I like that.

Those of us who have doubts about this relationship (and I'm still one of them) will continue to have doubts and (I speak for myself only here) hope that we're very, very wrong.
