The map above shows how widespread the challenges were that faced the Monuments Men, or as they are more formally known, the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Program. The personal papers of some of the Monuments Men, including conservator George Leslie Stout (a version of whom is played by George Clooney in the new movie), are held in the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art.

The Archives also has a fantastic series of oral history recordings with the soldiers,
which are well worth your listen.

Maybe we should point the recent film critics in it's direction for their edification and education ?

I can't stand to read any more of them. They seem to miss the greater idea behind this and how much poorer our culture would have been had these treasures been destroyed. They must be related to the school reformers in the U.S. who see no value in art and music... (sorry, a little off topic snarkiness, but believe me, it does apply.)
