Detroit's biggest movie in years halted by COVID-19 crisis

Julie Hinds, Detroit Free PressPublished 10:05 a.m. ET May 21, 2020

Detroit was just two weeks away from hosting its biggest film project in years when the coronavirus pandemic shut it down.
Director Steven Soderbergh revealed details of halting production on "Kill Switch" in an online interview this week.
The 1950s period crime drama, which is set in Detroit, was poised to film in the Motor City when filmmaking across the country came to a halt because of the COVID-19 crisis.
It would have reunited Soderbergh with George Clooney and Don Cheadle, who both worked with Soderbergh in the Motor City on the 1998 hit "Out of Sight."
"We were two weeks from shooting," said Soderbergh, who stressed that he still plans to bring the project to Detroit when it's safe to resume work.

Soderbergh did a lengthy interview posted on YouTube for "Nightcap Live with Dan Dunn," an online program for Flaviar, a distilled spirits club. The Oscar-winning director has a brand of Bolivian brandy called Singani 63.
Fielding questions sent in by viewers, Soderbergh opened up about "Kill Switch" after getting one from Detroit filmmaker and film programmer Ted Houser.
Soderbergh said the film was written for a star-studded cast that includes Jon Hamm, Sebastian Stan of the "Avengers" franchise, Benicio del Toro, and Ray Liotta along with Cheadle and Clooney.
Not mentioned was Josh Brolin, who previously had been in talks for the project (but Soderbergh did indicate he probably was forgetting some actors in the lengthy list).

"I wanna get back there," said Soderbergh of Detroit, where the project already had put out calls for vintage cars to be used in scenes. "This was a movie that I'd been working on for a long time. It's a great script. We had a great cast together. It's a period crime film set in 1955."
Soderbergh said he plans to restart the production "the minute that it is safe," but admitted that "Kill Switch" poses certain hurdles for a quick return to work — even when the shutdown is lifted.
"I think a lot of the films initially in the COVID world, their scale is going to be contained, so that you can sort of keep testing people and make sure that everybody is safe," he explained

"Kill Switch," however, is not a small-scale project. "It's a period film (with) extras ...The scale of it is big," Soderbergh said.
Soderbergh expressed disappointment at the delayed reunion for the "Out of Sight" team. The crime drama is considered one of the best cinematic adaptations ever of iconic Detroit author Elmore Leonard's novels.
"We shot 'Out of Sight' in Detroit with Don and George," said Soderbergh. "I was really excited about coming back. We're going to come back. We're just trying to figure out when. If (Houser) is patient, we'll see him there."
Director Steven Soderbergh's comments on "Kill Switch" begin at about the 47:43 mark.

Oh wow!  That's great news - even though the production's been shut down.

Guess we will be waiting for quite some time for this one to hit the big screen.  But I’m excited.  So will George play a bad guy, a good guy or a bad guy with good intentions?

One thing we do know, it's just fiction not real life.
