An embattled family who recently lost their home in a wildfire is facing more difficulties after all seven of its members contracted the novel coronavirus.
Matthew and Jessica Graham — along with their five children: Constantine, 10, Claudia, twins Zoe and Adele, 7, and Darius, 5 — tested positive for COVID-19 after their house and barn in Malden, Washington, was destroyed by one of the devastating wildfires ravaging across the west coast, The Spokesman-Review reported.
The Grahams started experiencing flu-like symptoms shortly after staying with family following the blaze, according to the outlet. Matthew said he began developing a cough, though he initially thought it was due to the heavy smoke.
Jessica told CBS affiliate KREM TV that her family "caught it from my parents and then we spread it to Matthew's mother," who babysat the children after the fire and later tested positive for COVID-19.

While the children have experienced mild symptoms, Matthew and Jessica said they still continue to suffer from fatigue and partial loss of their sense of taste.
"Before our house burned down, we were being really good about isolating and not having that much contact with other people and wearing masks and stuff," Matthew said. "And this thing is totally miserable and you really do not want to catch coronavirus."

To make matters worse, the Grahams said before testing positive they also unknowingly infected another family after having dinner with the household of nine.
"It’s horrible realizing that they reached out to us and have been so welcoming to us, and we spread it [coronavirus] to them," Jessica said.
The Grahams have since quarantined themselves at a hotel in Spokane Valley, putting a damper on their plans to find a new home.
"At this point, we really don’t have any plans. All that we have are questions that lead to more questions, and no answers anywhere to be found," Matthew said.
The Grahams left their house on Labor Day not knowing that a wildfire would shortly burn through their property, according to a GoFundMe page set up in support of the family. "By the time they received news of the mandatory evacuation, it was too late to return home to collect their things," a description for the page read.

Though the fundraiser said in an update that the family recently learned that their dog and chickens survived the fire, they "are having to completely start over" after losing all of their belongings.
"It’s just surreal, like being in a bad dream and you’re like, this can’t be real," Jessica told Q13 FOX.
Still, the Grahams said they're keeping their heads up during this trying time.
“This will be a year that we look back on and we’ll all probably be vastly stronger people for it," said Matthew.
"At least for us, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and I’ve explained to the kids they should be grateful because there is a light at the end of the tunnel and we just need to get there and not everybody has a light at the end of their tunnel."

A Texas family is reeling after 18 of them were infected with the new coronavirus, COVID-19 — and three were hospitalized — following a surprise birthday party.
Ron Barbosa, from Carrollton, Texas, said that 25 people attended the party to celebrate his daughter-in-law’s 30th birthday. His nephew was the host, and was unaware that he had COVID-19, thinking that his cough was from his job in construction, WFAA reported.
Barbosa, whose wife is a doctor, had refused to attend the party out of concern that he would get COVID-19. And though the family had intended to social distance, the virus quickly spread through the family.
"It wasn't that long. It was only a couple of hours," Barbosa told WFAA. "But during that brief time, somehow the other 18 family members are now infected with COVID."

Of those 18 family members, three are dealing with life-threatening cases — Barbosa’s parents Frank and Carole, who are both in their 80s, are hospitalized, along with Barbosa’s sister Kathy, who has breast cancer.
Kathy, who is undergoing chemotherapy treatments, and Frank did not attend the party — it was only Carole who had stopped by to drop something off — but the family sees each other frequently enough that they all got infected.
Carole and Kathy have since been able to leave the hospital, but Frank is “hanging on by a thread” in the ICU on life support, Barbosa said.
“They’re saying this is one of the last straws for my dad,” he said, adding, while holding back tears, “It’s heartbreaking.”

Barbosa has set up a Facebook page to share updates on their treatment, and said that he’s hopeful after his dad got a donation of plasma from a recovered COVID-19 patient.

“Prayers were answered today,” Barbosa wrote on Facebook, the Associated Press reported. “Now he needs to get well for mom and the Barbosa Family.”

Barbosa said that he and his wife were initially furious with their family for holding and attending the party.
"When people started getting sick, we really let everyone have it," he told WFAA. "We knew this was going to happen, I mean this whole time this has been going on we've been terrified."
But the whole family is now united as its patriarch fights for his life in the hospital.
"We were horrified. People couldn't believe that they took it to a family member," Barbosa said. "But now, we're holding on together."
Texas is currently seeing record-breaking numbers of new COVID-19 infections, with 6,057 on Saturday. The number of hospitalizations in the state — 5,102, as of Friday — has tripled since Memorial Day, when bars and restaurants reopened. Gov. Greg Abbott has since ordered bars to close again, and restaurants have to reduce their capacity.

With the first family they had no where to go so they trusted their family , we don't take the same precautions with family that we do with strangers out side.

The second family was just plain stupid, why did this woman need a party with what is going on they really should have
known better.

This is my theory on Trump's covid.
I don't believe for one moment you would give the President of U.S an experimental drug
that may or may not work or at worse kill him. If his case is mild why does he need the experimental drug? He said there would be a vaccine before election we know that won't happen. So now he is going to miraculously recover in what a week 10 days and hail this drug. And push for it to be given to others.

I may be wrong and he has it but , thinking about it things don't add up. I hate to think the doctors would go along with this but, everyone associated with Trump will go along with his craziness.

Annemarie - The drug they gave him is said to shorten the length of hospital stay for people with mild symptoms. It's beginning to look like anyone who works in the White House in proximity to drumpf has been exposed. They must be freaking out!

Now there is a question of how long he has had it. Mike Wallace said his doctor said it takes five days for it to get strong enough to test positive. Him not telling anyone earlier is no surprise he was probably hoping to give to Biden I put nothing past him. Even the facts around this are chaos White house says one thing doctors say another. Hope hicks hasn't said a thing. Did she hug and kiss everyone in the White House, that is how he claims she got it from the police and military people who were grateful for all they have done.

I don't know where he got it and I honestly don't care. IMO it's karma. Beau of the Fifth Column made an interesting point. (Especially to someone like me who wishes drumpf didn't exist) He said he hopes drumpf makes enough of a recovery to finish out the campaign so that he can be decisively beaten at the polls. He feels that a substantial Democratic victory is needed to prove to drumpf's base that they do not have the support of most of the country.

This man makes more sense than 90% of the "pundits" in the media. I wish he had a bigger platform.

I don't even think that a landslide win will help, Trump is already putting in motion the idea the election is rigged. That is what the shout out to the proud boys was. As for his followers they are too dumb to believe he lost because Most of America hates him. You have some of the idiots saying he doesn't have covid it is all fake news. He tweeted he has it yet they are denying it. Like I said I want him to suffer and know the pain others have gone through, not die. I want him to lose the election big.

There are a lot of people on both sides that doubt that he has it - and there are people who believe he does and that it's more serious than he's letting on. I don't know one way or the other, but I hope it's true.

Take a look at Beau's post "Let's talk about Trump going to the hospital..." to see the logic behind what he says. He really does make sense - a lot more than most of the talking heads out there.

White House doctor doesn’t answer questions on how or when Trump may have contracted COVID-19

President Trump released a videotaped statement Saturday from his hospital suite at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, assuring the nation that he was feeling better since being admitted the day before, and that he believed he would return to campaign trail “soon.”
“I came here, wasn’t feeling so well. I feel much better now. We’re working hard to get me all the way back. I have to be back because we still have to ... make America great again,” Trump said in the video. “We’ve done an awfully good job of that, but we still have steps to go. We have to finish that job.”
With polls showing him trailing former Vice President Joe Biden in the presidential race and just 30 days remaining until Election Day, Trump said he anticipated a quick return to the campaign trail.
“I’ll be back. I think I’ll be back soon. And I look forward to finishing up the campaign the way it was started. And the way we’ve been doing, the kind of numbers we’ve been doing, we’ve been so proud of it. But this was something that happened, and it’s happened to millions of people all over the world,” he said.

Questions arose Saturday over when Trump first learned he had tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. At a press conference earlier in the day, Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Conley, told reporters the president was “72 hours into the diagnosis,” which implied he had tested positive on Wednesday. Trump attended a large Wednesday campaign rally in Duluth, Minn., and then flew to a Thursday afternoon fundraiser at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J. Conley later said he had “misspoken,” and that Trump had first tested positive on Thursday evening.
Despite feeling under the weather, Trump interacted with roughly 100 donors at his club and, according to the White House, was tested for COVID-19 after leaving the event. When that rapid test came back positive, he was given a test to detect antigens for the disease. It confirmed his initial positive result.
On Friday, Trump’s condition declined and he was given oxygen while at the White House, multiple outlets reported. His doctors decided to move the president to Walter Reed late that afternoon. Since being admitted, the president has been given two different experimental drug treatments, a five-day course of Remdesivir and an antibody treatment made by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc., both of which have shown signs in trials of slowing the disease’s progress.
“So many things have happened. If you look at the therapeutics, which I’m taking right now, some of them, and others are coming out soon that are looking like, frankly, they’re miracles. If you want to know the truth: They’re miracles,” Trump said in the video. “People criticize me when I say that, but we have things happening that look like they’re miracles coming down from God. So I just want to tell you that I’m starting to feel good. You don’t know, over the period of a few days, I guess that’s the real test.”
Trump’s doctors noted earlier in the day that while the president’s condition had improved since Friday, he may still face a possible downturn. COVID-19 patients often experience the worst of their symptoms between the fifth and seventh days after the illness begins to manifest itself.

The Serious Side - part 8 - Page 17 9ee810b0-05cf-11eb-b6ff-bc74ddae1d16

The president also offered a conflicting account of the decision to be admitted to Walter Reed.
“I had no choice because I just didn’t want to stay in the White House,” he said, adding, “I was given that alternative: Stay in the White House, lock yourself in, don't ever leave, don’t even go to the Oval Office, just stay upstairs and enjoy it.”
But Trump depicted his admission to the hospital as a sign of strength.
“I had to be out front. And this is America. This is the United States. This is the greatest country in the world. This is the most powerful country in the world,” Trump said. “I can't be locked up in a room upstairs and [be] totally safe, and just say, ‘Hey, whatever happens, happens.’ I can’t do that. We have to confront problems.”
As for first lady Melania Trump, who also tested positive for COVID-19, Trump said her relative youth was helping her cope with the disease.
“Our first lady is doing very well. Melania asked me to say something as to the respect that she has for our country, the love that she has for our country,” he said. “And we are both doing well. Melania is really handling it very nicely. As you’ve probably read, she’s slightly younger than me — just a tiny bit.”

I saw that I get what he is saying. My thing is Trump said if the last election hadn't been rigged with 3 million illegal votes he would have won the popular vote. To me it won't make a difference to him or his minions they don't have common sense nor do they want to see the truth. He is already setting it up if he loses to say he was cheated . I don't think he will go quietly, nor do I think his followers will sit down. Trump is willing to tear this country apart to stay out of jail and keep making money off this country. I hope we can flip the senate that might help once he see's he has no back up to allow him to do what he pleases.

I do think it might make a difference to those people who are feeling uneasy about continuing to support him. The things he's been coming up with lately are so extreme, so repugnant to so many people who voted for him in 2016 that they might change their votes this time. If he loses decisively it might give them the option of returning to sanity. Who knows how people might respond without the constant drumbeat of his paranoia? We might even begin to return to some kind of normalcy

Physicians working closely with President Donald Trump during his bout with COVID-19 said he is doing well amid "frequent ups and downs" of his treatment.
On Sunday morning, doctors told reporters during a press conference that Trump, 74, could potentially be discharged from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and back in the White House tomorrow if he continues to improve.
"He has been up and around. Our plan today is to have him eat and drink, be up out of bed," said Dr. Brian Garibaldi. "[If] he continues to look and feel as well as he does today, our hope is to plan for discharge as early as tomorrow to the White House, where he can continue his treatment course."
Dr. Sean Dooley said the president "continues to improve" and has been without a fever since Friday morning, adding that Trump is "not complaining of shortness of breath" and is walking around his medical quarters in the hospital "without limitation or disability."

Addressing whether the president has been placed on supplemental oxygen during his treatment, Dr. Sean Conley said Trump had "two episodes of transient drops in his oxygen saturation," which "certainly never" dropped to the low-80 percentile.
"We debated the reasons for this, and whether we'd even intervene," said Conley of the two episodes. "It was a determination of the team based on the timeline from the initial diagnosis that we initiate dexamethasone."
Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid typically given to patients with severe COVID-19 cases.

Then, Conley, who confirmed the president had received supplemental oxygen while at the White House on Friday morning, was asked why the medical staff had been cagey about the use of oxygen in previous statements. "I didn't want to give any information that might steer the course of illness in another direction and in doing so it came off that we were trying to hide something, which wasn't necessarily true," he said, sharing that he was "trying to reflect the upbeat attitude that the team, the president, his course of illness has had."
Also addressing the mixed messages given by him and chief of staff Mark Meadows, Conley said Meadow's Saturday statement about the president's "very concerning" vitals was "misconstrued" and that Meadows was referring to Trump's report before he was admitted to the hospital.

The health update comes hours after Trump posted a video message Saturday on social media, in which he said that he "wasn't feeling so well" when he went to the Walter Reed Medical Center but has since improved. The night before, he tweeted, "Going well, I think!"
Conley told reporters on Saturday that Trump was "72 hours into the diagnosis," meaning the president would have received his positive test result on Wednesday morning. Trump, who publicly revealed his coronavirus diagnosis in a tweet on early Friday morning, had traveled to Minnesota for a campaign rally on Wednesday night without a mask and then went to New Jersey on Thursday.
Shortly after the briefing, Conley made a clarification on his briefing statements. "This morning while summarizing the President's health, I incorrectly used the term 'seventy-two hours' instead of 'day three' and 'forty-eight hours' instead of 'day two' with regards to his diagnosis and the administration of the polyclonal antibody therapy," read Conley's statement obtained by PEOPLE. "The President was first diagnosed with COVID-19 on the evening of Thursday, October 1st and had received Regeron's [sic] antibody cocktail on Friday, October 2nd."

President Donald Trump temporarily left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to wave at his supporters on Sunday, which was day 3 of his coronavirus hospitalization.
Possibly concerned about optics and taking publicity matters into his own hands, Trump, who was wearing a black face mask, was driven by his presidential motorcade in front of the D.C. hospital. Waving his bare hand from one of the black SUVs, Trump, 74, greeted the crowds of people who were waving "Make America Great Again" flags and posters.
Minutes prior to Sunday's unannounced car ride, Trump tweeted another video from the hospital. "We're getting great reports from the doctors. This is an incredible hospital, Walter Reed. The work they do is absolutely amazing. I want to thank them all, the nurses, doctors. I've also got to meet some of the soldiers and what a group," he began.
"I also think we're going to pay a little surprise to some of the great patriots we have out on the street and they've been out there for a long time. They have Trump flags and they love our country, so I'm not telling anybody but you, but I'm about to make a little surprise visit," he said.

Speaking about his coronavirus diagnosis, which he publicly revealed early Friday morning, the president, who was given three drugs -- dexamethasone, Regeneron's antibody treatment and remdesivir -- during his stay so far, said: "It's been a very interesting journey."
"I learned a lot about COVID. I learned it by really going to school, this is the real school. This isn't the let's-read-the-book-school. And I get it," Trump said. "I understand it. It's a very interesting thing, I'll be letting you know about it."
After his short drive, Trump returned to his presidential suite. "President Trump took a short, last-minute motorcade ride to wave to his supporters outside and has now returned to the Presidential Suite inside Walter Reed," said Judd Deere, the president's deputy assistant.

After Trump's drive-by greeting, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters that the president's "first positive test" was after attending a fundraiser at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, Trump's team of doctors, led by physician Sean Conley, told reporters during a press conference that the president could potentially be discharged from the hospital and back in the White House tomorrow if he continues to improve.

Criticism swirled in and around Walter Reed hospital on Sunday after President Donald Trump took a break from his treatment for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) for an unannounced car ride around the facility to wave to some of his supporters outside.
Sunday marked Trump's second full day at the military medical facility after being suddenly flown there via helicopter from the White House on Friday. Officials acknowledged over the weekend that his oxygen levels dropped on Friday and again on Saturday and he also had a fever Friday.
Waving from the backseat of a black SUV, a masked Trump — who The Washington Post reported was getting “bored” of being in the hospital by Sunday — sat in the vehicle with at least two Secret Service agents. In a video on Twitter from inside the hospital, Trump, 74, called it a "little surprise."

The move, which the White House insisted had sign off from the president's doctors, drew backlash from some as trivial and risky to the others in the vehicle with the president, given that he is sick.

“Every single person in the vehicle during that completely unnecessary Presidential ‘drive-by’ just now has to be quarantined for 14 days,” tweeted Dr. James Phillips, an attending physician at Walter Reed and a doctor at George Washington University. “They might get sick. They may die. For political theater. Commanded by Trump to put their lives at risk for theater.”
“This is insanity,” Phillips added.
“This is an individual with an active infection in close proximity with two other individuals, in a vehicle with closed windows, performing an optional task,” tweeted Dr. Saad Omer, an epidemiologist and the medical director at Yale Institute for Global Health.
“Masks help,” Omer wrote, “but they are not an impenetrable force field.”

White House spokesman Judd Deere defended the appearance afterwards, saying that “appropriate precautions were taken.”
"The movement was cleared by the medical team as safe to do," Deere maintained, saying that the precautions for the president and his supporters included the use of protective equipment (presumably such as masks).
In a statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the Secret Service said that the agency "will continue to follow established protocols to ensure the safety of our employees" but added it doesn't discuss details about its work.
Nonetheless, current and former agents blasted the brief trip outside the hospital as careless and concerning.
“He’s not even pretending to care now,” one agent told the Post on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity.
A former agent, referencing the Trump administration, simply asked: “Where are the adults?”
"That should never have happened," a current agent, who works on the first family’s personal detail, told CNN. “The frustration with how we're treated when it comes to decisions on this illness goes back before this though. We're not disposable."

The president’s brief public appearance followed an extraordinarily confounding weekend in which White House officials failed to clearly provide accurate information about Trump's health while his doctors made a number of contradictory statements and declined to answer many specific questions about his current status.
White House physician Dr. Sean Conley also refused to answer reporters’ questions about what lasting damage Trump’s COVID-19 illness might have on his lungs going forward — weeks ahead of the Nov. 3 election.
Trump aides and other leading Republicans have repeatedly said he remains at work while hospitalized.
The ultimate course of his treatment and recovery remained unclear Monday morning, though his doctors have said they are trying to seem publicly optimistic and that he could soon be discharged.
Trump's opponent, Democratic nominee Joe Biden, sent his well wishes over the weekend as he was be able to continue campaigning while Trump remained hospitalized with the virus he long brushed off at his own campaign events.
“I genuinely feel badly for the president,” Biden, 77, said in an interview with local NBC affiliate WOOD in Michigan. “I hope to God that this is something that he and his wife will be able to tolerate and get through without any lasting impact on them.”

President Donald Trump cancelled talks for the next stimulus deal.
Here’s what you need to know—and what happens next.

Stimulus

Trump effectively ended stimulus talks today, and tweeted: “I have instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election when, immediately after I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill that focuses on hardworking Americans and Small Business.” Will there be a stimulus deal? Here are 3 possibilities for what happens next.

Option 1: Stimulus talks are cancelled until after the election

Option 1 is that stimulus talks are indeed finished until after the election on November 3. Trump tweeted that Republicans made a good faith offer of $1.6 trillion and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, according to Trump, is “not negotiating in good faith” and focused on federal spending not directly related to Covid-19. So, if Trump’s tweet is interpreted literally, then Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows would put pencils down until after the election. Effectively, this means game off, and no second stimulus checks or enhanced unemployment benefits for now. Of course, that could mean November or December, or it could mean in 2021 after the start of the new congressional term. It’s also possible that a stimulus deal never happens.

Option 2: Nancy Pelosi lowers her price tag for the next stimulus

Option 2 is that House Democrats further revise their $2.2 trillion Heroes Act stimulus bill to get a stimulus deal done before the election. If Pelosi chooses this option, Pelosi has several choices. First, Pelosi could cut proposed spending to bring the overall price tag closer to $1.6 trillion, which was the latest offer from Republicans, to finalize a stimulus deal. Second, Pelosi could re-engage directly with Mnuchin and Meadows without making an offer (and despite the president’s tweet) to gage interest in a potential stimulus deal before the election. It’s possible, however, that following the president’s tweet, Mnuchin and Meadows won’t reengage.

Option 3: Republicans pressure Trump to approve a stimulus deal

The third option is that Senate Republicans—potentially moderate senators up for re-election—could lobby Trump to restart stimulus talks, despite his tweet. However, this is low likelihood. While Congress, not the president, passes any potential stimulus legislation, the president has the power to veto the legislation or sign the bill into law. Therefore, the president and Senate Republicans must be aligned on any potential stimulus legislation. Most Senate Republicans don’t necessarily want more stimulus spending. Some support elements of a stimulus deal such as small business loans, unemployment benefits and school funding. However, few, if any, Senate Republicans would support a $2.2 trillion stimulus deal. Most Senate Republicans would rather secure the Supreme Court confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett before the election than finalize a stimulus deal. While it’s possible to accomplish both, the likelihood of a deal before the election without Trump’s support is non-existent.

Next Steps

Anything can happen in an election year. If Congress and the president want a stimulus deal done before the election, it will get done. Simply put, Mnuchin and Pelosi can re-engage at any time. Otherwise, the next stimulus deal, if there is one, could be pushed to later this year or early next year. Remember, Trump still want a stimulus deal and supports second stimulus checks for the American people. The composition of Congress—specifically which party controls each chamber—will dictate the price tag and policy priorities of a potential stimulus package. Are these the only potential outcomes? No, there are other options. However, these three options represent potential next steps worthy of consideration. This is not the first start-stop combination of the stimulus dance, but the trend line has been leaning toward no stimulus deal before the election. For now, that trend line will continue—no deal.

The family of Juan Ciprian (pictured) 81, of Massachusetts, says their loved one didn't wear a mask because the president downplayed the virus. Ciprian died last week from COVID-19
'He was the only one that wasn't complying. He was hearing all these conspiracy theories, and saying Trump said this or that,' she said. 'He didn't believe it was a real thing.'
Ciprian, who was described as not having any ailments, started experiencing COVID-10 symptoms on September 20. He was taken to a local hospital three days later.
Ciprian died from COVID-19 on September 29, according to his family. The 81-year-old's wife was also diagnosed with the virus and was hospitalized before being  transferred to a rehabilitation home where she is still seeking treatment.
It was only a matter of time before Landaverde's parents caught the virus. Landaverde's grandparents live with her parents who were also hospitalized due to the virus.

Landaverde shared a message from her mother, Maria, with the Globe that reads: 'We, all the people who have been affected by COVID-19, lost their jobs, got sick, or even died from it, deserve to be heard. My heart is with President Trump and wish him the best but the country needs him to stop playing politics and remember we are people.'
In total, seven people in Landaverde's family were diagnosed with the virus, leading them to believe they contracted it from her grandfather.
Just a day after the family received Ciprian's ashes, they learned that Trump also had the virus.
Landaverde said the president's diagnosis devastated the family and 'brought some anger into our hearts'.

Trump takes off his mask as he arrives at the White House on Monday
Trump says 'don't be afraid' of coronavirus at the White House

Lo

Trump announced his diagnosis just days after the first presidential debate last week.
He spent three nights at the Walter Reed medical center in Bethesda, Maryland, before returning to the White House on Monday.
Trump staged a dramatic return to the White House after leaving the military hospital where he was receiving an unprecedented level of care for COVID-19.
He immediately ignited a new controversy by declaring that despite his illness the nation should not fear the virus that has killed more than 210,000 Americans — and then he entered the White House without a protective mask.
'Don't let it dominate you. Don't be afraid of it,' Trump said in a video after his return from the Walter Reed Medical Center military hospital outside Washington where he was treated for COVID-19.
'I'm better, and maybe I'm immune - I don't know,' he added, flanked by American flags and with the Washington Monument in the background. 'Get out there. Be careful.'
Trump's message alarmed infectious disease experts and suggested the president's own illness had not caused him to rethink his often-cavalier attitude toward the disease, which has also infected the first lady and several White House aides, including new cases revealed Monday.
Landing at the White House on Marine One, Trump gingerly climbed the South Portico steps, removed his mask and declared: 'I feel good.'
He gave a double thumbs-up to the departing helicopter from the portico terrace, where aides had arranged American flags for the sunset occasion. He entered the White House, where aides were visible milling about the Blue Room, without wearing a face covering.
The president left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where his doctor, Navy Cmdr Sean Conley, said earlier Monday that the president remains contagious and would not be fully 'out of the woods' for another week but that Trump had met or exceeded standards for discharge from the hospital.
Trump is expected to continue his recovery at the White House, where the reach of the outbreak that has infected the highest levels of the US government is still being uncovered.
Still, just a month before the election and anxious to project strength, Trump tweeted before leaving the hospital: 'Will be back on the Campaign Trail soon!!!' And in case anyone missed his don't-worry message earlier, he rushed out a new video from the White House.
'You're going to beat it. We have the best medical equipment, we have the best medicines,' Trump said.
His remarks were strong, but he was taking deeper breaths than usual as he delivered them.
Trump's nonchalant message about not fearing the virus comes as his own administration has encouraged Americans to be very careful and take precautions to avoid contracting and spreading the disease as cases continue to spike across the country.
For more than eight months, Trump's efforts to play down the threat of the virus in hopes of propping up the economy ahead of the election have drawn bipartisan criticism.
'We have to be realistic in this: COVID is a complete threat to the American population,' Dr David Nace of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, said of Trump's comment.

For the first time in its 208-year history, The New England Journal of Medicine is wading into political waters, offering a scathing indictment of President Donald Trump in a new editorial.
In the essay, "Dying in a Leadership Vacuum," editors of the publication write extensively about the novel coronavirus pandemic, specifically calling out the Trump administration for what they call an "astonishing" public health failure.
Though the journal's editors don't offer a ringing endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, Trump's rival in the Nov. 3 election, they harshly criticize the current administration, which they say has squandered any opportunities to contain the virus and risked countless American lives.
"Here in the United States, our leaders have failed that test," the editors wrote. "They have taken a crisis and turned it into a tragedy. The magnitude of this failure is astonishing. According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering, the United States leads the world in Covid-19 cases and in deaths due to the disease, far exceeding the numbers in much larger countries, such as China."

"Covid-19 is an overwhelming challenge, and many factors contribute to its severity," the editors wrote. "But the one we can control is how we behave. And in the United States we have consistently behaved poorly."
As the editorial points out, the U.S., despite being the wealthiest nation in the world, has seen a death rate that dwarfs that of much lower-middle-income countries, such as Vietnam, "by a factor of almost 2000."
The piece argues that other world leaders who responded similarly "would be suffering legal consequences," but that President Trump and his allies "have largely claimed immunity for their actions."
"When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent," the editorial continues. "We should not abet them and enable the deaths of thousands more Americans by allowing them to keep their jobs."

Like many medical journals, The New England Journal of Medicine has remained nonpartisan over the years and has never publicly supported — or condemned — a political candidate.
Last month, Scientific American offered an endorsement of Biden, the first in the publication's 175-year history.
Its announcement also denounced Trump's handling of the ongoing pandemic, writing that he "repeatedly lied to the public about the deadly threat of the disease" and therefore must be voted out come November.
In response to criticism about how he handled the coronavirus, Trump has repeatedly said the blame should be with China and he has touted some of his decisions, such as initially restricting travel and efforts to increase the ventilator supply.

PAN - The Twitter link you posted wasn't available. Don't know if that means in the US or just me.

Annemarie - You can vote early if you are voting by mail or if there's an early voting site near you. October 24th is the last date to register if you haven't voted before. At least that's what they told me when I checked with Election Protection last week. I've already mailed my ballot so I hope they were right. (I tried to check with the Board of Elections but their line's been busy for weeks and their website doesn't answer the right questions.)

A federal judge in Washington D.C. has blocked a Trump administration rule that would have stripped food stamps from nearly 700,000 unemployed Americans.
In her 67-page ruling on Sunday, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Beryl Howell called the administration's proposed plan "arbitrary and capricious."
"The final rule at issue in this litigation radically and abruptly alters decades of regulatory practice, leaving states scrambling and exponentially increasing food insecurity for tens of thousands of Americans," Howell wrote in the ruling.
Howell also called out the Department of Agriculture (USDA) in her ruling for being "icily silent" about how many Americans would have been denied food stamps had the changes been put into effect during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The USDA did not immediately return PEOPLE's request for comment.
The ruling also estimated that as of May, two months after the pandemic broke out, the number of Americans that signed up for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, rose "17 percent with over 6 million new enrollees."

The Trump's administration's proposed plan to cut food stamps was formalized by the USDA back in December. Had it passed in court, it would have slashed nearly $5.5 billion from SNAP over five years, according to the Washington Post.
That could have impacted 688,000 people losing their SNAP, CNN reported.
USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue said at the time that the changes were made "in order to restore the dignity of work to a sizable segment of our population and be respectful of the taxpayers who fund the program," according to NBC News.

In an attempt to challenge the USDA's ruling, a coalition of attorneys general from 19 states, D.C. and New York City filed a lawsuit back in January, CNN reported.

Tiffany Trump was back on the campaign trail this week defending what she called President Donald Trump's support for the LGBTQ community — and plenty of people had plenty to say in response.
"I am part of the LGBTQ. I am a gay man. Donald Trump does NOT represent me, and neither does: Tiffany Trump. Donald has attacked my community in the military and through executive orders attacking the ACA," advocate Peter Morley wrote in a viral tweet.
“Seeing Tiffany Trump try to label her father, someone who banned trans people from serving in the army, tried to change the legal definition of gender & worked to make it possible for LGBTQ people to be discriminated against, as an LGBTQ ally makes my skin crawl as an LGBTQ person,” another Twitter user, who identifies as a Democratic supporter, wrote.

Tiffany, 27, hosted a Saturday afternoon Pride event in Florida, sponsored by her father's re-election campaign, along with Richard Grenell, who was the highest-ranking openly gay official in the Trump administration.
“I know what my father believes in,” the president's youngest daughter told the crowd, adding she was speaking “truthfully, honestly and from my heart.”
“Prior to politics he supported gays, lesbians the LGBQIA+ community, okay!” Tiffany said, shifting her energy between excited and somber throughout her speech.

At one point, Tiffany introduced her mother, Trump's second wife, Marla Maples, who stood up, jumped and waved with both hands to the small crowd.

Immediately after, as attendees were still cheering, Tiffany dramatically shifted the tone.

"Back in the Broadway days — I mean, let's just — I mean, some of her best friends when she was on Broadway, unfortunately one of her best friends passed away from AIDS," she said.

In addition to the wave of viral social media criticism, other users defended Tiffany, arguing that she was being unfairly maligned compared with Democratic nominee Joe Biden's son Hunter, who has a long history of personal troubles and substance abuse.

But Tiffany's critics honed in on what they called obvious hypocrisy, particularly for someone who has largely avoided her father's political career.
(She has faced other recent backlash, including for a birthday party in Miami during the novel coronavirus pandemic that Trump detractors turned into a viral video.)

The president, 74, has taken contradictory stances on the LGBTQ community — at times presenting himself as an ally, unlike many other Republicans, while at others advancing policy to marginalize gay and transgender people.
His campaign website says that Trump "stands in solidarity with LGBT citizens by supporting and enacting policies and initiatives that protect the wellbeing and prosperity of all gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans."
His record shows otherwise.
Earlier this summer, The New York Times reported the president’s administration moved to erase Affordable Care Act mandates that specifically protect transgender Americans from being discriminated against in healthcare settings.

Separately, the Trump administration pushed forward this summer to grant single-sex shelters the ability to deny transgender homeless individuals shelter, while the government also moved to block transgender high school students from being able to join sports teams.
In 2019, the Trump administration’s ban to keep transgender military members from serving was deemed “insidious” by one nonpartisan policy group, according to NBC News.
And the government under President Trump had backed legal arguments that employers could fire people for being gay or transgender.
During his 2016 campaign, he also said he opposed gay marriage.

“Donald Trump is delusional if he thinks he can spend three years attacking our rights and then turn around and ask for our vote," Florida state Rep. Michele Rayner, the first Black queer woman ever elected to the statehouse, told the South Florida Gay News on Monday. "Waving a rainbow flag for an afternoon means nothing after his administration appointed dozens of anti-LGBTQ judges to federal courts, codified discrimination against transgender Americans, and are fighting to overturn the Affordable Care Act, and its protections for our community.”

More than 132,700 new coronavirus cases were reported across the U.S. on Friday, breaking the record of daily cases for the third straight day.
There were also more than 1,000 coronavirus-related deaths reported for the fourth straight day, numbers that have not been seen since August, according to a New York Times database. As of Friday, there have been more than 9,815,400 total cases of COVID-19 and at least 236,400 deaths in the country.
The steady surge in coronavirus infections comes as the 2020 presidential election was called in favor of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on Saturday. According to a report from Axios, the now-president-elect plans to name a 12-member task force on Monday.
The task force will be led by former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner David Kessler and Yale University’s Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, the outlet reported.

Biden, 77, and Harris, 56, have made their coronavirus response a key part of their campaign, with the former vice president telling Americans in a speech on Friday evening that the pandemic “is getting more worrisome all across the country.”
"Daily cases are skyrocketing, and it's now believed we could see as many as 200,000 cases in a single day," Biden said. "I want you to know that I’ll work hard for those who voted against me as those who voted for me. That’s the job. That's the job. It’s called the duty of care for all Americans."

President Donald Trump has not yet addressed the new record-breaking numbers, which have affected nearly every region in the country. At least 17 states reported single day records for new cases on Friday and four states — Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Utah — reported a record number of deaths, according to the Times.
RELATED: Texas Kindergarten Student Who Died of COVID Complications Was 'Perfectly Healthy' Before Death, Says Mom
Also, 27 states have seen more cases reported in the past week than in any other seven-day period since the pandemic first took hold in the U.S. in March. The average number of people currently hospitalized with the virus is up by at least 5 percent in 38 states, CNBC reported.
The rising case numbers are worrying health officials, especially as colder weather sets in across much of the country, pushing people indoors where the virus is more likely to spread.
“We are heading into a dark time, and we have to be extremely careful right now not to overwhelm our hospitals,” epidemiologist Ali Mokdad told The Washington Post. “Time for unity. Time to face our common enemy.”

Dylan McDermott Says Working With Daughter Colette in Proof of Loss Was 'A Dream Come True'
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris stressed unity in her victory speech on Saturday night.
Harris, who wore a white suit in tribute to the suffragette uniform, spoke outside Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware, and made remarks before introducing President-elect Joe Biden.
"Congressman John Lewis, before his passing wrote 'Democracy is not a state. It is an act.' And what he meant was that America's democracy is not guaranteed. It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it. To guard it and never take it for granted. And protecting our democracy takes struggle. It takes sacrifice. But there is joy in it. And there is progress. Because we, the people, have the power to build a better future," the California senator, 56, began. "And when our very democracy was on the ballot in this election -- with the very soul of America at stake and the world watching -- you ushered in a new day for America. To our campaign staff and volunteers, this extraordinary team, thank you for bringing more people than ever before into the democratic process."
Harris thanked the poll workers and election officials throughout the country who "tirelessly" worked to assure that all votes were counted on and after Election Day. "Our nation owes you a debt of gratitude. You have protected the integrity of our democracy," she said. "And to the American people who make up our beautiful country, thank you for turning out in record numbers to make your voices heard. And I know times have been challenging, especially the last several months."

Harris continued, "The grief, sorrow, and pain, the worries and the struggles, but we have also witnessed your courage, your resilience and the generosity of your spirit. For four years, you marched and organized for equality and justice, for our lives and for our planet and then you voted! And you delivered a clear message. You chose hope and unity, decency, science, and yes, truth! You chose Joe Biden as the next president of the United States of America!"

Further praising Biden, Harris called him a "healer, uniter, a tested and steady hand."

"A person whose own experience of loss gives him a sense of purpose that will help us as a nation reclaim our own sense of purpose. And a man with a big heart who loves with abandon," she said. "It's his love for Jill, who will be an incredible first lady. It's his love for Hunter and Ashley and his grandchildren and the entire Biden family. And while I first knew Joe as vice president, I really got to know him as the father who loved Beau, my dear friend who we remember here today."
Then, Harris thanked her own family, including her husband Doug Emhoff. "And to my husband Doug and our children Cole and Ella and my sister Maya and our whole family, I love y'all more than I can ever express. We are so grateful to Joe and Jill for welcoming our family into theirs on this incredible journey," she said.

Harris was born in Oakland, California, in 1964, the daughter of immigrant parents. Her mother, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris, a cancer researcher, came to the United States from India while her father, Donald Harris, an economist, was born in Jamaica.
"To the woman most responsible for my presence here today, my mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who is always in our hearts. When she came here from India at the age of 19, she maybe didn't quite imagine this moment," the vice president-elect said, speaking of her mother in her speech. "But she believed so deeply in an America where a moment like this is possible, and so I am thinking about her and about the generations of women, Black women, Asian, white, Latina, Native American women, who throughout our nation's history, who paved the way to tonight, women who fought and sacrificed so much for equality and liberty and justice for all. Including the Black women who are often, too often overlooked but so often proved they are the backbone of our democracy."
Harris served as the San Francisco district attorney from 2004 to 2011 and went on to become the first Black woman to be elected as California attorney general, holding office from 2011 until 2017, when she was elected to the Senate.
"All the women who have worked to secure and protect the right to vote for over a century 100 years ago with the 19th Amendment, 55 years ago with the Voting Rights Act and now in 2020 with a new generation of women in our country who cast their ballots and continued the fight for their fundamental right to vote and be heard. Tonight, I reflect on their struggle, their determination and the strength of their vision to see what can be unburdened by what has been," Harris said in her speech. "And I stand on their shoulders. And what a testament it is to Joe's character that he had the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers that exists in our country and select a woman as his vice president."

Last year, Harris ran her own campaign for Democratic presidential nomination before dropping out of the primaries in December. Then, she endorsed Biden in March, once there were no more women in the running — and was named as his vice presidential pick in August.
"While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last. Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities and to the children of our country regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction and see yourselves in a way that others may not simply because they've never seen it before. But know that we will applaud you every step of the way," Harris said in her speech.
To conclude her speech, Harris spoke about getting to work as soon as possible, specifically to tackle the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
"And to the American people, no matter who you voted for, I will strive to be a vice president like Joe was to President Obama: loyal, honest, and prepared; waking up every day thinking of you and your family, because now is when the real work begins, the hard work, the necessary work, the good work, the essential work to save lives and beat this epidemic," she said.
"To rebuild our economy so it works for working people, to root out systemic racism in our justice system and society. To combat the climate crisis, to unite our country and heal the soul of our nation. And the road ahead will not be easy. But America is ready. And so are Joe and I," she added. "We have elected a president who represents the best in us, a leader the world will respect and our children will look up to. A commander in chief who will respect our troops and keep our country safe and a president for all Americans."
On Saturday, the Associated Press had projected Biden won 290 electoral votes to Trump's 214 — above the 270-vote threshold — including the swing states of Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, with additional leads in Georgia and Nevada.

While President Donald Trump continues to baselessly claim the election results showing he lost to Joe Biden are fraudulent, his campaign has pivoted to raising money for an "election defense fund" and other efforts to challenge the votes in Nevada, Pennsylvania and elsewhere.
But there’s a catch: In some cases, 50 to 60 percent of  the money donated to these efforts will go toward paying off Trump’s campaign debt.
The disclaimer was first reported by The Wall Street Journal, which noted last week that Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee have been sending texts since Wednesday asking supporters to contribute to Trump’s legal efforts.

“We must PROTECT the Election!” read one campaign text, signed by Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., according to the Journal. “My father’s calling on YOU to help bolster our critical Election Defense Fund.”
The text linked to a donation page where a disclaimer read that 50 percent of the donation would go toward paying off the president’s campaign debt, while the other 50 percent would go toward the campaign’s recount efforts.
Another fundraising campaign being pushed by the Trump 2020 team leads supporters to a webpage for the Trump Make America Great Again Committee — a joint committee by Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., and the Republican National Committee.
“60% to DJTP for deposit in DJTP’s 2020 General Election Account for the retirement of general election debt,” that fine print reads.

The Trump campaign did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The president's campaign told CNBC last month it had raised more than $950 million for Trump's re-election efforts, while the network noted the near-billion-dollar number does not include the RNC's own spending.
One former administration official tells PEOPLE the president's team is on track to exhaust his legal efforts before he would concede: "He feels he has to see it through for his supporters."
"I'll always think the president did not get the campaign he deserved," this source says. "They raised $1 billion and lost to Joe Biden."

President-elect Joe Biden’s campaign is also soliciting donations for the legal challenges. The Journal reports the fine print on Biden’s fundraisers indicate the first $142,000 contributed may go to the Democratic National Committee, though its disclaimers don’t mention the funds going toward retiring any campaign debt.
Both political committees play a significant role in funding court battles surrounding an election, the Journal reports.
The Trump campaign’s efforts were particularly scrutinized as the president refuses to acknowledge his defeat, with losses not just in Arizona or Nevada or Pennsylvania or Wisconsin but all of them.

Donnamarie - Neither am I......but there has to be a way to reach them so the country can get back to some kind of normalcy and civility. I watch Beau of the Fifth Column's YouTube channel because he's a voice of reason in all the insanity. Lately he's been talking about how to deal with the people in your life who are still swallowing drumpf's propaganda and how we move forward from here. There are no quick fixes, just a lot of hard work.

(If you need a little reassurance that things will get better, check him out. He's well worth a listen.)

She knows what she'll hear because she knows what she's doing is wrong - and she looks like she's enjoying every second of the attention she's getting. Well Ms. Murphy probably won’t have her job much longer.  She can continue to enjoy her kowtowing to Trump but after Jan. 20 she can start brushing up her resume.

Lizzy I’ll check out the You Tube show.  Thanks!

The U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 to side with New York places of worship against pandemic restrictions on religious gatherings as new cases of COVID-19 continue to spike across the country.
On Wednesday, the court — including newly appointed member Justice Amy Coney Barrett — made a decision on a case involving the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn claiming that public health restrictions put in place by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in an executive order were too harsh.
The court decision calls the measures "very severe restrictions on attendance at religious services in areas classified as 'red' or 'orange' zones" and temporarily blocks the state from enforcing the rules in the outbreak hotspots. Dissenting votes came from Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. and Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan. Lower courts had previously sided in favor of the health precautions.

"The restrictions at issue here, by effectively barring many from attending religious services, strike at the very heart of the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious liberty," reads one part of the decision.
In a statement to CNN, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn supported the ruling, adding that the restrictions of attendance were a "clear First Amendment violation and urgent need for relief in this case."

Due to the airborne transmission of COVID-19 and case spikes across the country, the CDC advises against indoor gatherings of large groups and recommends six feet of distance and face coverings at all times.
"Members of this Court are not public health experts, and we should respect the judgment of those with special expertise and responsibility in this area. But even in a pandemic, the Constitution cannot be put away and forgotten," reads the decision.
Outgoing President Donald Trump — who has publicly feuded with Cuomo — showed support for the ruling on Twitter, retweeting a post about the decision and writing in all-caps: "HAPPY THANKSGIVING!"

Los Angeles County is tightening its COVID-19 restrictions and urging residents to stay at home "as much as possible" as cases continue to rise in the region.
On Friday, health officials issued a temporary stay-at-home order which will take effect on Monday and be in place for at least three weeks through Dec. 20.
The order will allow essential and emergency workers to leave their homes and prohibits all public and private gatherings except for church services and protests, according to the press release.
Health officials said COVID-19 cases remain at "alarming levels" and as of Friday, the county has confirmed 24 deaths and 4,544 COVID-19 cases, with a five-day average of 4,751 new cases.

"Residents are advised to stay home as much as possible and always wear a face covering over their nose and mouth when they are outside their household and around others," the release stated.
Under the new legislation, businesses will have new occupancy limits, allowing all essential retail to operate at 35 percent, non-essential retail at 20 percent and businesses operating outdoors like fitness centers, museums, zoos, aquariums, gardens, mini-golf, batting cages and go-kart racing at 50 percent.
Restaurants will remain open for pick-up, delivery and take-out only —  a restriction that has not been in place in Los Angeles since May.
Beaches, trails, and parks will remain open but gatherings with other households at these sites are prohibited. Playgrounds and cardrooms will close.
Schools and day camps are allowed to stay open so long as they adhere to re-opening protocols.

On Friday, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti urged residents to stay home, writing "we have to act now to slow the spread."
"Two months ago, it was projected that one in every 880 L.A. County residents were infected with COVID-19. Now, it’s estimated it's one in every 145," he added.
L.A. County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl told CBS Los Angeles that officials hope the new order will help keep hospitals from getting overrun.
"Look at your healthcare workers. They’re exhausted, many of them have tested positive, which means they have to stay home," Kuehl said. "We’re running out of ICU beds, the hospitals — they’re not full, but if you want elective surgery, you won’t get it."
The new restrictions come two days after county officials suspended outdoor dining for at least three weeks.
“The persistent high number of cases requires additional safety measures that limit mixing in settings where people are not wearing masks,” Barbara Ferrer, the L.A. County Public Health Director, said in a statement.
As of Saturday, more than 13.1 million people have contracted the coronavirus and at least 264,862 people have died, according to data from The New York Times.

A mangled pram stood in the wreckage of a German car rampage today after a baby girl and at least three others were killed when a Range Rover drove into pedestrians in what police say was a deliberate attack.
Witnesses described the pram being flung off the ground, and victims 'flying into the air', after the car drove more than half a mile through a shopping area in Trier which usually hosts a popular Christmas market.
A 51-year-old German man was arrested near the city's Roman gate four minutes after the rampage began, and was being questioned tonight as police try to establish the motive for the attack.

The suspect was named by Focus magazine as Bernd W, an unemployed electrician described as a 'strange individual' by neighbours who remembered him being 'aggressive' as a child and reported rumours that he had started living in his SUV since his mother died a few years ago.
The Range Rover was hoisted away for investigation tonight, hours after Trier mayor Wolfram Leibe, his voice breaking with emotion, said a young girl was among the dead in the attack.
Leibe described seeing one of the girl's discarded shoes at the scene while another witness told the local Trierische Volksfreund paper that the dark grey vehicle had sent the pram flying off the ground.
Around 15 others were injured, some of them seriously hurt and in hospital, and the death toll has already risen from two to four.
While authorities have not described it as a terror act, and security sources said they had no evidence of a 'political backdrop' to the attack, the incident has brought back memories of the 2016 Christmas market rampage in Berlin in which 12 people were killed.

The car is thought to have driven around half a mile through a pedestrian area near the Porta Nigra, an old Roman gate
The car was stopped near the Porta Nigra, the old Roman gate, and the driver arrested at the scene - with footage showing him being pinned to the ground next to his damaged vehicle.
Police spokesman Karl-Peter Jochem said the driver had 'indiscriminately' run people down after turning into the pedestrian area.
The suspect, who lives locally, was being questioned in custody on Monday evening but authorities would not be drawn on a possible motive.
Germany has seen both Islamist and far-right attacks in recent years, and just today more than 180 officers were involved in a raid against a banned neo-Nazi group known for its racist and anti-Semitic ideology.
The report which named the suspect as Bernd W made no suggestion of any political ideology, but said he was unemployed and known to go drinking at a local kebab shop.
Police said there was no further danger to Trier residents after the driver's arrest, suggesting that he had acted alone. He was arrested four minutes after the first emergency call, authorities said. .

The numbers of dead and injured were still becoming clear on Monday evening, but the death toll was already higher than the two that was first announced.
In addition to the injured people, there were many other 'traumatised' pedestrians who were in shock after witnessing what had happened, the mayor said.
One witness who watched the 'rampage' from a shop on the pedestrian street described seeing a children's buggy being flung into the air, saying people had run indoors in panic.
'We often see pictures like this on television and think that can't happen here. Now it's happened in Trier,' the mayor told reporters near the Porta Nigra.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman called today's news 'shocking' and said the government's thoughts were with the injured people and relatives of victims.
Regional premier Malu Dreyer, who arrived at the scene on Tuesday evening, said she was deeply shaken by the events in the historic city which she described as her home town.

At least two people were killed and several injured in Trier in south-western Germany today
After the driver's arrest, officers warned people to avoid the scene, and said they were on the scene alongside ambulance crews while helicopters were also hovering over the city.
Footage showed police vans and other emergency vehicles parked on a wide shopping street in Trier, a large section of which appeared to have been cleared.
Shoppers were seen huddling outside stores festooned with Christmas decorations, while sirens could be heard in the distance. Emergency services from nearby Luxembourg were also said to be on the scene.
While Trier is usually home to one of Germany's most popular Christmas markets, the event was cancelled this year because of the pandemic.
While bars and restaurants have closed under a so-called 'lockdown light' to bring down infections, shops and schools have remained open, unlike during the spring.
The incident brought back memories of the 2016 truck rampage at a Berlin Christmas market that left 12 people dead.
The driver on that occasion, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker, was a supporter of the Islamic State jihadist group.
In August 2019, six people were injured in a series of motorway accidents in Berlin in what prosecutors described as a suspected Islamist attack.

It seems as if a lot of people with mental problems are acting out all over. Here we've had quite a few random attacks on people in the street and subway by people with mental problems.

Years ago we bent over backwards to make the law fairer for people who are mentally challenged. Now it seems as if we've made it almost impossible to see to it that they get the ongoing treatment that they need. It's a complex problem and I don't know the answer. It just seems that there has to be a better solution.

So sad.  After these types of horrible violence people always ask what could have been done to prevent this unstable person from acting out.  There isn’t an answer.  So many unstable people go through the motions every day of living on the edge.  They just don’t usually cross that fine line into acting out.  They don’t give obvious signals. People are clever in hiding their true emotions ... until  it’s too late. Such a tragedy.

After the vote tallies finished in November and the state certifications finished in December and, one by one, the lawsuits failed to persuade the courts of fraud or wrongdoing, the Electoral College on Monday made it officially official:
A majority of the electors who represent every state as well as Washington, D.C., voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next president and vice president, according to the Associated Press and The New York Times.
Hawaii was the final state to vote in the Electoral College, Monday night.
California's electors put Biden over the 270-vote threshold.
The usually little-watched procedure took place throughout the day, across the country, as the 538 presidential electors cast ballots according to their state’s popular vote winner.
President-elect Biden defeated President Donald Trump 306-232 in the Electoral College — the same result that was projected by media outlets days after the Nov. 3 election, even as Trump began bellowing on social media and in front of TV cameras that the election was "stolen."

He offered no proof and both the courts and investigators resoundingly rejected his complaints and those of his allies. Local elections officials from both parties said they found no widespread fraud.
Nonetheless, in an unprecedented move that Trump had previewed while campaigning, he refused to concede or say whether he will attend Biden's Jan. 20 inauguration.
Last week, in a last-ditch legal push, Trump backed a suit filed by Texas that sought to toss out some 20 million ballots in four states that voted for Biden — an attack on the election itself.
(The Supreme Court declined to hear the case.)

Biden received more than 81 million votes, the most votes ever cast for a presidential candidate in U.S. history.

Trump received some 74 million votes, the second highest total, reflecting the high levels of interest in the election and the historic number of mail ballots during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Biden is expected to speak Monday night from Wilmington, Delaware, where he has been preparing his nascent administration.
"In this battle for the soul of America, democracy prevailed," he will say, according to excerpts provided by his transition team.
"Now it is time to turn the page. To unite. To heal," Biden will say in his speech.
"As I said through this campaign, I will be a president for all Americans. I will work just as hard for those of you who didn’t vote for me, as I will for those who did."
Biden has recently named his top White House aides, made Cabinet picks and laid out some of his initial plans for his administration’s first 100 days in office.

The presidential electors who voted Monday will now send their results to Washington, D.C., where Congress will affirm the votes on Jan. 6 in a joint session with Vice President Mike Pence.
Though that step is also procedural — the last in the chain of the vote-counting process, before Jan. 20's inauguration — some Republicans have said they will mount an objection in Congress in a final bid to overturn Biden's win.
Given the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, however, such efforts are almost certain to fail beyond further underlining GOP disdain for the election they lost.

A Chinese journalist who shared dozens of videos illustrating the severity of Wuhan's COVID-19 outbreak has been sentenced to four years in prison after being accused of spreading misinformation.
Zhang Zhan, 37, was found guilty of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble," her lawyers said, according to CNN. CNN noted that this charge in China is often used to punish anti-government activists.
In a series of videos posted to social media sites including Twitter over three months, Zhan — who is a former lawyer — showed how the pandemic had affected everyday life in Wuhan, from hospitals at full capacity to empty stores shuttered due to lockdowns.
As The New York Times reported, Zhan's videos were critical of the Chinese government's response to the virus and challenged the notion that it had everything under control.

In her final message before being arrested in May, she said: "The government’s way of managing this city has just been intimidation and threats. This is truly the tragedy of this country.”
An indictment accuses her of publishing "fake information" and receiving interviews from international media outlets out of malice, reported CNN. The outlet added that the indictment details that Zhan was twice detained in 2019, though it's unclear what for.
The Times reported that Zhang began a hunger strike in protest of her arrest, and was force-fed by authorities via a feeding tube.
A number of other citizen journalists in China have gone missing, been arrested, or put under government surveillance due to their work during the pandemic.

Speaking anonymously to CBS News, a lawyer for Zhang said she did nothing wrong, and her videos should be protected as free speech.

"No one dared to speak out under that situation, but Zhang Zhan went to report on the frontline and against the government line," the attorney told CBS. "That's why the authorities think she was trying to harm the government. While the government was trying to accuse or frame her, Zhang was just trying to protect the public's right to know."
Wuhan is the original epicenter of the novel coronavirus and a major transportation hub that allowed for the virus to spread easily to other countries.
The Chinese city went into lockdown in January, a then-unprecedented move to halt the spread.
China officially lifted its lockdown on Wuhan in April and state media propaganda has claimed that the country's "outstanding leadership" has defeated the virus, according to TIME.
According to a New York Times tracker, more than 1.7 million deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 globally in the past year, as of Monday.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday that a national coronavirus lockdown will once again be imposed in England.
Due to the "alarming" spread of the new variant of COVID-19, which was first identified in the U.K. in late December, Johnson said that additional steps needed to be taken or the country's National Health Service risked the possibility of being overwhelmed within the next 21 days.
“Our scientists have confirmed this new variant is between 50 and 70 percent more transmissible – that means you are much, much more likely to catch the virus and to pass it on,” he said during a televised broadcast, noting that within the past week, the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations had “increased by nearly a third” to almost 27,000.
The number of deaths has also risen by over 20 percent over the past week “and will sadly rise further,” added Johnson, who battled the virus last year.

“With most of the country already under extreme measures, it is clear that we need to do more, together, to bring this new variant under control while our vaccines are rolled out,” he continued. "In England, we must therefore go into a national lockdown which is tough enough to contain this variant.”

Starting on Tuesday, schools across the country will close, although nurseries will be permitted to remain open. Residents will also be permitted to leave homes for essential errands, to seek medical attention and escape domestic abuse.
The lockdown is expected to last through at least mid-February.

“Of course, there is one huge difference compared to last year,” Johnson continued. “We’re now rolling out the biggest vaccination program in our history. So far we in the U.K. have a vaccinated more people than in the rest of Europe combined.”

On Monday, hours before the lockdown announcement, the U.K. became the first nation in the world to administer the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine. In December, the U.K. was also the first nation to approve and administer the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
To date “more than a million people in the UK have already been vaccinated with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine,” according to a government press release issued Monday.

“The weeks ahead will be the hardest yet but I really do believe that we’re entering the last phase of the struggle because with every jab that goes into our arms we are tilting the odds against COVID and in favor of the British people,” Johnson continued as his speech came to a close.
“Thanks to the miracle of science, not only is the end in sight, but we know exactly how we will get there,” he continued. But for now, I’m afraid you must once again stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.”
Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also announced on Monday that the country would be entering into a full lockdown. Northern Ireland and Wales were previously placed under national lockdown late last year.

In Germany, we'll have a continuation of the lockdown that started at the beginning of December and now won't finish until the end of January.
Which means that schools will remain closed until - which causes problems for parents of primary school children because it's more difficult for them to be taught online.
And for shops, restaurants, theaters etc...
