Amid the firestorm that erupted over the separation of children from their parents crossing over the U.S. southern border, George and Amal Clooney pledged $100,000 in June to a small Chicago-based nonprofit with a very targeted mandate to aid unaccompanied immigrant minors.
Their grant was nearly double what The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights received all of last summer from individual donors, and it quickly triggered hundreds more donations that so far this summer add up to more than $2.3 million, according to the center. The group’s recent experience underscores the ability of large, high-profile gifts to steer public attention and funds.

“We’re a relatively small organization and in the world of organizations we are relatively new,” says Maria Woltjen, executive director of The Young Center, a 15-year-old nonprofit based out of the University of Chicago. “For an organization like ours to be highlighted, especially to be highlighted by the Clooney Foundation for Justice, made such a difference.”
Thanks to the millions that have poured in, the center is now in the process of growing its staff by one-third across eight locations around the country and thereby increasing the number of children’s cases they can take on, Woltjen says. More than 12,000 people have contacted the organization offering to volunteer this summer, and donations are flooding in from concerts, dinners, art shows, and even lemonade stands fundraising to help provide legal representation to immigrant children.
The Clooneys’ support for The Young Center went beyond a single donation. Amal Clooney, a U.K.-based human rights lawyer, joined her father-in-law, Nick Clooney, for a sold-out Q&A in downtown Toronto in June, where she talked about The Young Center and their work.
It inspired at least one person at the talk to follow her lead.

“Amal talked about your organization and the Clooney Foundation’s decision to support you,” Lisa Ritchie, an attendee at the event, wrote in an email along with her gift to The Young Center. “You are obviously very compassionate and justice-seeking, and I applaud you for it.”
It’s the effect the Clooneys were hoping for, said David Pressman, a U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and executive director of the Clooney Foundation.
“What is at stake is too important to be distorted by politics. We hoped that others would join us in supporting the Young Center’s important work, and are thrilled so many did just that,” Pressman told Penta in a statement.
The Clooneys are not alone in harnessing their celebrity to guide public donations during the ongoing imbroglio over U.S. immigration policy.

On June 14, Grammy- and Academy Award-winning singer John Legend and his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, said they were donating $288,000 ($72,000 for every member of their family) to the American Civil Liberties Union in honor of President Donald Trump’s 72nd birthday, and urged fans and social media followers to do the same.
More than $1 million has since poured into the ACLU specifically through the link Teigen promoted on social media. In total, the organization, which advocates for immigrant rights, has received $2.5 million from 40,000 people through online donations since June 14.
“We’ve seen a trampoline effect on fundraising when celebrities rally their followers and fans in response to a crisis, such as with the current family separation crisis and the Muslim travel ban in January 2017,” says Mark Wier, ACLU’s chief development officer. “Their influence can drive media coverage and create a compelling call to action for thousands of people.”
The Texas-based Refugee and Immigration Center for Education and Legal Services, better known as RAICES, which provides legal services to families separated at the border, has also raised millions this summer following a viral Facebook campaign and promotion from high-profile donors, who in turn spurred more celebrity donations.
Hollywood writers from Starz drama Vida and the Netflix sitcom One Day at a Time, announced a joint effort in mid-June to raise money for RAICES and challenged others in the industry to follow them. Writers from a host of shows answered the call to action, including Jane the VirginThis Is UsThe Handmaid’s Tale, and Riverdale, the writers announced through social media.
Days later, The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon told his Twitter followers that he was giving to RAICES in President Donald Trump’s name. As did the Hollywood organization behind the Golden Globes, which donated $250,000 to RAICES as part of its annual Grants Banquet on Aug. 9—a gift actor Steve Carell presented that evening.
RAICES did not return a request for comment.
The instant effect their support can have on public giving, however, makes it necessary for notable people to fully research the organizations they promote for the sake of their own image and their fans, says Anne Hennessy, senior resident at the PNC Center for Financial Insight.
“The celebrity needs to do their due diligence to make sure the charity is a worthy charity—not that the cause isn't a worthy cause,” she says. “It looks like an endorsement and people will assume that it’s a vetted organization and they are making a good investment with their funds.”
Besides cash donations, notable people are also raising public awareness by joining the board of a nonprofit, hosting events and helping organizations with advertising, such as appearing in an infomercial, Hennessy says.
At Clooney’s public talk in June in Toronto, she disparaged some aspects of life in the spotlight since she married her movie star husband, with one important exception: her power to influence.
“You can turn a spotlight and put it on something important, and you can help people by raising awareness,” Clooney told a reportedly packed audience. “The worst things happen in darkness, and as a famous U.S. jurist said, ‘Sunlight is the best disinfectant.’”
