Donnamarie - I'm in the same boat. Only three trick-or-treaters rang our bell and they were the little kids who live across the hall. There really haven't been many for the last couple of years. Most schools have some sort of Halloween party for the kids so maybe that's why. Whatever. More candy for me!

Re: November Chit Chat
November 9th is a sort of fateful day for Germany:
Today, 100 years ago, the first German Republic was proclaimed, and our emporer had to resign. Five years later, Hitler started a putsch but failed, was convicted to spend several years in prison and wrote his book 'Mein Kampf' there. He succeeded to govern Germany ten years later (not on November 9th).
Today, 80 years ago, the Nazis started the 'Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass). They robbed shops and houses of Jewish families, killed thousands of them, sent the rest to concentration camps and burned down synagogues (including the one in my hometown, they also killed the man who worked there). That was the start of the shoah.
Today, 29 years ago, the speaker of the GDR government said during a press conference that people from the GDR would be able to visit West Germany without the permit they had needed up to then, and, when a reporter asked when this would begin, falsely answered: "Immediately!" which meant that hundreds of thousands of people went to the checkpoints in Berlin until the GDR border patrols opened the borders instead of shooting the people. Which led to the reunification of my country.
So it's always a day with lots of speeches, memorials and talks...

I don't live near the fires and it is overwhelming here. I drive the coast all the time, it so beautiful there, I know families will rebuild and bring back the beauty.

Not any more. We did have a few inches but it turned to rain and got washed away. Now it's all sunny and dry. Wreaked havoc on transit, though. Apparently we're no longer prepared for winter. Don't know why it's such a surprise. It happens every year.

Yes , I don't understand either how do they not prepare for winter it makes no sense. De Blasio blamed the weather forecasters.
So in all of the MTA there is no one who keeps an eye on the weather especially at this time of the year.

Jo - Is that Lake Como now?!! Wow! It's beautiful, but it really is too early for so much snow.Somehow I don't think of it ever snowing there. Maybe because we mostly see it when George is there in the summer.
Our snow came and went in a day, washed away by rain. Now we're just freezing! Thanksgiving was around 20 degrees F, today not much better, but tomorrow is supposed to be around 50 degrees F. Our weather is totally screwed up.
Hope everyone is staying warm and dry and having fun.

Re: November Chit Chat
I was just reading through some old threads and came across a chat between someone in Australia and someone in the UK (I think) about an old Kevin Bacon tv series I have never heard of.
It got me thinking about how we export so much programming but get so little programming from outside the US except on PBS (public broadcasting) and foreign language channels, which except for Spanish and Chinese channels are by subscription. We now do have BBC America and there's something new being advertised called "BritBox" which I haven't checked out yet.
What I wondered was what American tv shows do you guys watch the most. What are your favorites?

Hi Lizzy.....That picture is posted by It's Me....
Not Me.....LOL.
It's different to the one I saw on Bing.
Re American TV shows.
Last year I was Hooked on BONES.
BRILLIANT SHOW. And because it was based
on actual work done by a forensic scientist
I learned a lot too.
I'm now enjoying an Australian series called
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.
It's set in the 1920's in Melbourne, filmed there too.
The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher is a Private Detective & she gets involved in all sorts of adventures solving murders.
I love the settings that they've created to show
the 20's in Australia with the style of clothes,
the furnishings and the old cars etc......It's Great.
It's based on the books written by an Australian
crime writer, Kerry Greenwood, and I also enjoy
listening to her books being read on Audible Books.
Just going now to watch Our Phryne solve another
murder in her wonderful 20's outfits on TV. LOL.
BTW....Phryne is pronounce.... FRI....KNEE.
I like the name !
Have a Good Weekend Everyone

Re: November Chit Chat
Jo - We got Miss Fisher here, too for a while. I really enjoyed it. I agree that part of what made it great was the clothes and locations - but what I really loved was her attitude. A truly liberated woman. In those days I guess they'd have called her a flapper - or something much less flattering!
Lately I've been watching Father Brown and Death in Paradise. The characters are quirky and fun and they're not bathed in blood like so many of our shows - even when there's a high body count.
Bones is in re-runs now. It's on cable and probably online, too. As a matter of fact, I think it's on now. I watched it religiously when it first aired, but by the time the series was ending Emily Deschanel was getting on my nerves. Something about the halting way she spoke bothered me - she didn't speak like that in the beginning - or if she did I didn't notice it.
Anyhoo....Have a great weekend and sorry about the mix-up!

Re: November Chit Chat
It’s the first of December..... oopsy that means I have a birthday coming up... but which one? I sat in bed trying to think comparing myself to friends or landmark events.... for all I tried I simply did not know.... out came my fingers and I started in multiples of ten, then I couldn’t keep count of the tens.... so here I sit “ageless”. Bizarrely it’s a family trait, my darling Mum never could remember her age.... and told my brothers never to date women who tell their real age explaining that if a woman revealed her age she could never be trusted(?) and would reveal everything to anyone.....
In a time where BIG birthdays call for a week off work... my non compliance’s are seen as an endorsement of “she really doesn’t know her age, or care, If this really was the big “O” sweet baby Jesus she wouldn’t just pick up a pizza on the way home”.....
A few years ago someone here on COH wished me a happy birthday..., just like that out of the blue... It made me smile ... it was the only one....
Isn’t the internet grand...

Angels walk amongst us....and sometimes they hold our hand and fly with us too..
This has me in tears every time I think of it....
This week I had to fly on business, I had to no getting out of it but I had the most awful flu....
On the seat inside me sat a young VERY good looking man, full beautifully groomed beard and thick polo neck rustic jumper., expensive jeans ... you get the picture....
Half way through the flight my lungs started to let me down and I was finding it hard to breath, I got spots in front of my eyes and I knew I might pass out... a stewardess saw I was going blue and got me some oxygen and ice in a jcloth AND a sick bag.. .. I was desperate to be as discreet as possible and not cause a fuss... my Angel passenger next to me simply took the sick bags off my lap and opened one wide and said “when your ready I am” ... I told him I wasn’t going to be sick.... He took my hand and said “let’s breath together instead”.... we sat there for half an hour he would gently squeeze my hand on the in breath and loosen his hold on the out....
By touchdown I was absolutely fine.... everyone ldisembarked and I got up to let him sprint off first... he pointed to the back of my seat which was wet ... he said “you sweeted that out! Well done”.... and was gone....

On the mend... but I was very nervous flying home...In a world where nastiness is becoming acceptable, a kindness becomes overwhelming .... I can’t stop tearing up every time I tell it .... I don’t know whether that prompted something but all week people have been so unbelievably kind and gentle.... Maybe he opened my eyes to nice people all around that I had stopped seeing....
