Tears of joy have been shed across Ireland today as supporters of abortion reform have won a landslide victory in a historic referendum.
Voters cast their ballots yesterday on whether to overhaul the country's Eight Amendment which makes abortions illegal except in cases where it endangers a mother's life.
But today anti-abortion campaign leaders conceded defeat in the vote after exit polls predicted almost 70 per cent said Yes to repealing the amendment.
This morning Save the Eighth spokesman John McGuirk said it was clear the electorate had 'come down on the other side'.
The group added: 'What Irish voters did yesterday is a tragedy of historic proportions. However, a wrong does not become right simply because a majority support it.'
Galway East, in Ireland's west, became the first constituency to declare a result, with 60.19 per cent for Yes and 39.81 per cent for No and turnout was 63 per cent.
Meanwhile Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, who led the Yes campaign, has said the country is united and has voted 'resoundingly' in favour of the abortion reform.
He pledged to introduce new legislation by the end of the year and called it 'the culmination of a quiet revolution'.

In a statement, Mr McGuirk said: 'The unborn child no longer has a right to life recognised by the Irish state. 'Shortly, legislation will be introduced that will allow babies to be killed in our country. We will oppose that legislation.'
'If and when abortion clinics are opened in Ireland, because of the inability of the Government to keep their promise about a GP led service, we will oppose that as well.
'Every time an unborn child has his or her life ended in Ireland, we will oppose that, and make our voices known.'
He said there were a lot of people who voted No who are very aggrieved by the result.
Meanwhile the Together For Yes organisation said: 'This is a vote for dignity and decency.
'If exit polls are reflected in the official vote count later today, this will be a moment of profound change in Ireland's social history, a moment when the nation collectively stood up for women and for their healthcare, and voted for constitutional change.'

People under the age of 53 could not vote in 1983. On Friday, those age groups seem to have backed Yes in overwhelming fashion.
Almost 90% of voters under 25 appear to have voted Yes.
Those aged 35-49 endorsed repeal by around 73%, the exit polls indicate.
The only age group to vote No was the over 65s, indicating that those who backed the amendment in 1983 largely retain their opposition to abortion - they are now just outnumbered by younger generations committed to reform.
The Behaviour & Attitudes poll for RTE surveyed 3,800 people at 175 polling stations across the country.
With a margin of error of +/- 1.6%, 69.4% voted to repeal the Eight Amendment of the constitution while 30.6% voted No.
The exit poll conducted for The Irish Times indicated a 68% to 32% Yes vote.
That poll, which has a margin of error is estimated at +/- 1.5%, saw 4,000 voters interviewed by Ipsos/MRBI as they left 160 polling stations on Friday.
- What is the Eighth Amendment?
It is a clause in the constitution which was written after a previous referendum on the issue in 1983 recognised the right to life of the unborn child.
It protects the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn and effectively prohibits abortion in most cases.
Among its supporters are the Catholic church, which remains a strong presence in Ireland, though diminished from its heyday. Young people are among the most enthusiastic proponents of repeal.
- What effect has it had?
In 1992, women were officially given the right to travel abroad, mostly to the UK, to obtain terminations. Pro-repeal campaigners said almost 170,000 have done so.
The Irish Government's deputy premier, Tanaiste Simon Coveney, has argued that effectively left Britain deciding the law for Irish women around the procedure and it was time to take back control in Ireland.
- What about the women who stay in Ireland?
The campaign to liberalise abortion gathered momentum after an Indian dentist, Savita Halappanavar, died in hospital in Galway aged 31 when she was refused an abortion during a miscarriage.
Her husband, Praveen Halappanavar, said she repeatedly asked for a termination but was refused because there was a foetal heartbeat.
Health service reviewers later identified failings in her care.
- Did anything change?
In 2013, legislation was amended to allow terminations under certain tightly restricted circumstances - the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act.
When doctors felt a woman's life was at risk due to complications from the pregnancy, or from suicide, they were permitted to carry out an abortion.
It followed a 1992 Supreme Court ruling that terminations were permitted where the mother's life was at risk.
That regime has prompted uncertainty, proponents of repeal said, with the medical profession facing possible prosecution and up to 14 years' imprisonment if they wrongfully carry out an abortion.
- Was that concession enough for those seeking liberalisation?
Not according to the women who were still travelling to the UK in their droves for procedures.
Among them were Amanda Mellet and her husband James, who took their case to the UN's Human Rights Committee.
The Committee called for reform to give women greater rights and said the ban on abortion caused cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
In 2016, for the first time in its history, the Irish State compensated a woman, Mrs Mellet, for the trauma caused by forcing her to travel to Britain for an abortion.
- What approach did the Government adopt?
It established a public advisory body, a Citizen's Assembly, which recommended introduction of unrestricted access to abortion.
Because of the Eighth Amendment, a public poll was needed before new laws could be passed, and earlier this year the country's Housing Minister, Eoghan Murphy, set the date for the abortion referendum as Friday May 25.
The Government has published draft legislation to be introduced if the amendment is repealed which would allow relatively free abortions, subject to consultation with a medical professional and after a short waiting period, up to 12 weeks after gestation and up to 24 weeks with restrictions.
If, after 12 weeks, a woman's life is threatened or there could be serious harm to her health two doctors will consider whether to allow the procedure.
Terminations will not be carried out after the foetus becomes viable, following 24 weeks of pregnancy
As predicted, urban areas appear to have been more strongly in favour of repeal, at just over 70%.
But according to the polls, rural areas also voted Yes, with around 60 to 63% in favour.
A total of 3.3 million citizens were registered to vote in Friday's referendum.
The Catholic Church was among influential voices calling for a No vote, arguing that the life of the unborn should be sacrosanct.
But the Yes camp, which portrayed itself as modernising and in step with international opinion, insisted repeal would demonstrate Ireland's compassion for thousands of Irish women forced to travel to England for the procedure.

It was dubbed the X Case and was the subject of a ruling from Ireland's highest court, the Supreme Court, which overturned the decision.
Judges said a realistic threat of suicide constituted grounds for an abortion.
Two referendums were held and as a result the constitution was amended to ensure Irish women had the freedom to travel to other countries to seek terminations.
Medical practitioners still faced uncertainty over when the procedure could be carried out in Ireland.
2002: Another referendum was held to decide if the threat of suicide as a ground for legal abortion should be removed. It was rejected.
2010: The European Court of Human Rights ruled that Ireland had not provided clarity on the availability of abortion in cases where a mother's life was at risk.

With a margin of error of +/- 1.6%, 69.4% voted to repeal the Eight Amendment of the constitution while 30.6% voted No.
The exit poll conducted for The Irish Times indicated a 68% to 32% Yes vote.
That poll, which has a margin of error is estimated at +/- 1.5%, saw 4,000 voters interviewed by Ipsos/MRBI as they left 160 polling stations on Friday.

Not according to the women who were still travelling to the UK in their droves for procedures.
Among them were Amanda Mellet and her husband James, who took their case to the UN's Human Rights Committee.
The Committee called for reform to give women greater rights and said the ban on abortion caused cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
In 2016, for the first time in its history, the Irish State compensated a woman, Mrs Mellet, for the trauma caused by forcing her to travel to Britain for an abortion.
- What approach did the Government adopt?
It established a public advisory body, a Citizen's Assembly, which recommended introduction of unrestricted access to abortion.
Because of the Eighth Amendment, a public poll was needed before new laws could be passed, and earlier this year the country's Housing Minister, Eoghan Murphy, set the date for the abortion referendum as Friday May 25.
The Government has published draft legislation to be introduced if the amendment is repealed which would allow relatively free abortions, subject to consultation with a medical professional and after a short waiting period, up to 12 weeks after gestation and up to 24 weeks with restrictions.
If, after 12 weeks, a woman's life is threatened or there could be serious harm to her health two doctors will consider whether to allow the procedure.

As predicted, urban areas appear to have been more strongly in favour of repeal, at just over 70%.
But according to the polls, rural areas also voted Yes, with around 60 to 63% in favour.
A total of 3.3 million citizens were registered to vote in Friday's referendum.
The Catholic Church was among influential voices calling for a No vote, arguing that the life of the unborn should be sacrosanct.
But the Yes camp, which portrayed itself as modernising and in step with international opinion, insisted repeal would demonstrate Ireland's compassion for thousands of Irish women forced to travel to England for the procedure.

I've read on a German newssite that Facebook and Google stopped publishing ads financed from foreign countries about this poll. There were no governments who interfered, but these companies wanted to avoid a discussion similar to those after the Brexit referendum and the US elections.

Joanna - I haven't been following this too closely because just looking at him makes me sick, but I assume the District Attorney chose to prosecute these cases because they're winnable. Maybe he has solid proof he can bring to court in these instances.
I don't know if other women will be called to testify, but if these cases can put Weinstein away for a long time maybe the other women can be spared having to relive their experiences in open court. Should the DA need more evidence, there's a long list of women willing to testify.

President Trump said Friday he had reached a deal to keep Chinese telecoms giant ZTE running, rolling back penalties in exchange for security guarantees.

The move infuriated Democrats and some in his own party after the company violated US sanctions on Iran and North Korea and repeatedly lied to US government officials.
But now, daughter Ivanka's operations will give her the exclusive rights to market a variety of products in China that will likely amount to millions of dollars in profits.
Although the trademark applications were submitted more than a year ago, they were all approved on May 7 - then five days later Trump said he was working on a deal to lift remove U.S. business barriers against ZTE in order to save Chinese jobs.
News of the agreement drew immediate fire on Capitol Hill.

The trademark approvals raise new concerns about potential Trump family conflicts of interest
Under the agreement, ZTE would oust its management team, hire American compliance officers and pay a fine.
The fine would come on top of the roughly $1 billion ZTE has already paid for selling equipment to North Korea and Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions.
In return, the Commerce Department would lift a seven-year ban on ZTE's purchase of components that the Chinese firm depends on from U.S. companies.
The ban, imposed earlier this month, threatened to put ZTE out of business.
The non-profit Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, D.C., said the trademark deal again raises concerns about the Trump family's international businesses and potential conflicts of interest.
'As a White House adviser, Ivanka has represented the United States at multiple diplomatic events despite the potential conflicts her business interests present,' CREW said in a statement.

Lawmakers have warned the administration not to go easy on a company that brazenly violated U.S. sanctions against two rogue nations that were pursuing nuclear weapons production.
'If the administration goes through with this reported deal, President Trump would be helping make China great again,' said Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York.
Schumer added: 'Both parties in Congress should come together to stop this deal in its tracks.'
'ZTE presents a national security threat to the United States — and nothing in this reported deal addresses that fundamental fact,' said Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. 'If President Trump won't put our security before Chinese jobs, Congress will act on a bipartisan basis to stop him.'
Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida tweeted: 'It is a great deal ... for #ZTE & China ... Many hoped this time would be different.'

Trump responded to his critics late Friday, saying Democrats had done nothing to rein in ZTE. 'I closed it down then let it reopen with high level security guarantees, change of management and board, must purchase U.S. parts and pay a $1.3 Billion fine,' he tweeted.
The Commerce Department last month blocked China's ZTE from importing American components for seven years, having concluded that ZTE deceived U.S. regulators after it settled charges last year of violating sanctions against Iran and North Korea.

China has approved five new trademarks for Ivanka Trump's business just days after Trump's deal to drop US prohibitions against cellphone manufacturer ZTE
The move infuriated Democrats and some in his own party after the company violated US sanctions on Iran and North Korea and repeatedly lied to US government officials.
But now, daughter Ivanka's operations will give her the exclusive rights to market a variety of products in China that will likely amount to millions of dollars in profits.
Although the trademark applications were submitted more than a year ago, they were all approved on May 7 - then five days later Trump said he was working on a deal to lift remove U.S. business barriers against ZTE in order to save Chinese jobs.
News of the agreement drew immediate fire on Capitol Hill.

The trademark approvals raise new concerns about potential Trump family conflicts of interest
Under the agreement, ZTE would oust its management team, hire American compliance officers and pay a fine.
The fine would come on top of the roughly $1 billion ZTE has already paid for selling equipment to North Korea and Iran in violation of U.S. sanctions.
In return, the Commerce Department would lift a seven-year ban on ZTE's purchase of components that the Chinese firm depends on from U.S. companies.
The ban, imposed earlier this month, threatened to put ZTE out of business.
The non-profit Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, D.C., said the trademark deal again raises concerns about the Trump family's international businesses and potential conflicts of interest.
'As a White House adviser, Ivanka has represented the United States at multiple diplomatic events despite the potential conflicts her business interests present,' CREW said in a statement.

'This is a law enforcement action being handled by Commerce,' said Lindsay Walters, the deputy White House press secretary. 'We are making sure ZTE is held accountable for violating U.S. sanctions, pays a big price and that we are protecting our security infrastructure and U.S. jobs.'
Lawmakers have warned the administration not to go easy on a company that brazenly violated U.S. sanctions against two rogue nations that were pursuing nuclear weapons production.
'If the administration goes through with this reported deal, President Trump would be helping make China great again,' said Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York.
Schumer added: 'Both parties in Congress should come together to stop this deal in its tracks.'
'ZTE presents a national security threat to the United States — and nothing in this reported deal addresses that fundamental fact,' said Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. 'If President Trump won't put our security before Chinese jobs, Congress will act on a bipartisan basis to stop him.'
Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida tweeted: 'It is a great deal ... for #ZTE & China ... Many hoped this time would be different.'
Congress, Rubio said, 'will need to act.'

Trump responded to his critics late Friday, saying Democrats had done nothing to rein in ZTE. 'I closed it down then let it reopen with high level security guarantees, change of management and board, must purchase U.S. parts and pay a $1.3 Billion fine,' he tweeted.
The Commerce Department last month blocked China's ZTE from importing American components for seven years, having concluded that ZTE deceived U.S. regulators after it settled charges last year of violating sanctions against Iran and North Korea.
The ban amounted to a virtual death sentence for ZTE, which relies on U.S. parts, and it also hurt ZTE's U.S. suppliers.
On the eve of broad trade talks last week with a Chinese trade envoy, Trump waded into the ZTE case: He tweeted that he was working with President Xi Jinping to put ZTE 'back in business, fast' and save tens of thousands of Chinese jobs.

ZTE was fined $1.2 billion in March 2017 and Washington banned the sale of crucial US components to the company, but such restrictions have now been rolled back
He later tweeted that the ZTE talks were 'part of a larger trade deal' being negotiated with China.
Word of a reported ZTE agreement comes nearly a week after the U.S. and China suspended plans to impose tariffs on as much as $200 billion of each other's goods.
In doing so, the two nations pulled back from the brink of a trade war over Chinese demands that U.S. companies hand over some of their technology as the price of doing business in China.
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross is scheduled to travel to Beijing on June 2 for further discussions over China's aggressive push to challenge U.S. technological dominance.
Resolving the ZTE case — a company that employs more than 70,000 Chinese — could make the talks go more smoothly.

He is also experiencing a small increase in support from key democratic groups including Millennials, independents and women.
But the data, obtained in a nationwide online survey of 881 likely voters, found that Trump would still be beaten at the polls if he went up against either Michelle Obama or Oprah.

Shortly after Wanda Sykes announced she would no longer be a part of ABC’s hit Roseanne revival following Roseanne Barr‘s racist tweet, the network has canceled the show.
“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” president of ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey announced in a statement Tuesday.
The backlash has been fierce after Barr, who has been outspoken in her support of President Donald Trump, tweeted a since-deleted attack on former Barack Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett, who is black, during a racist Twitter rant overnight Monday.
“Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby = vj,” she wrote, using Jarrett’s initials in response to a tweeted conspiracy theory about the Obama administration.
Barr also attacked Chelsea Clinton, tweeting a since-deleted lie that “she’s married to soros nephew,” referring to billionaire George Soros.
Sara Gilbert publicly denounced her costar, and several other celebrities called on the ABC to cancel the show.

I have mixed feelings about this. It makes me sick that anyone could sink so low, but it doesn't surprise me. The nastiness coming from the administration seems to be giving license to anyone to say anything, no matter how nasty - and Roseanne has always gone for snide and nasty in her "comedy".
I wish there was a way for ABC to fire Roseanne but keep the show going. The rest of the cast and crew don't deserve to have their careers disrupted because Roseanne is a jackass. I hope none of them turned down lucrative offers to do this show and I hope ABC at least compensates them financially. Bravo to Wanda Sykes for walking away!

Black, who is running for governor of Tennessee, made her charge in a listening session last week ministers at Safe Harbor of Clarksville, Tennessee.
'Pornography,' she told the group.
'It's available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store. Yeah, you have to reach up to get it, but there's pornography there,' she said in a recording of her remarks obtained by the Huffington Post. 'All of this is available without parental guidance. I think that is a big part of the root cause.'

She didn't clarify what it is about porn that she thinks causes school shootings, other than her claim that it is readily available in the local grocery store. And she has not commented on the matter on Twitter since the leaked audio of her comments.
Black also said during the meeting that school shootings are on the rise because of the 'deterioration of the family.' She cited mental illness and violent movies, as well.
'Every one of those school shootings,' she said. 'Their friends can actually pinpoint a time when there was a change in behavior.'
There have been 23 school shootings so far this year.
Black was a registered nurse before she ran for the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1998. She's been a member of the U.S. Congress since 2011.
She is a strong supporter of President Donald Trump and wants to see his border wall with Mexico paid for with crowd sourcing.
Last week Black, introduced a bill that would create a 'border wall trust fund,' which would allow people to donate money toward building Trump's border wall.
She said in a Monday tweet, 'Tomorrow, President @realDonaldTrump is visiting Nashville, and I will be telling him how illegal immigration has hurt our state. If you believe President Trump is right to #BuildTheWall then sign on to our petition.'

It doesn’t surprise me either Lizzy. Nor probably anyone else who knows Roseanne’s MO on Twitter. ABC knew but they still put her on the air. Her cast members were aware of her Twitter history too so I guess they all took a chance. ABC did the right thing but it was also smart on their part. It is a shame that the show has to be cancelled. It would be interesting if ABC could revamp the show with the other cast members. It is practically the only show on TV that has taken on the cultural divide in our country.

The weird thing is that so much of the show deals with the issues we're faced with in a tolerant, progressive way and Roseanne was responsible for much of the content and tone of the show. I may be wrong, but it was my understanding that she had final say on the scripts. It's difficult to reconcile that with her real-life behavior.

I think if they brought back the show it could actually be better without Barr. In some ways she is very polarizing if you know her background. She was for me. I wouldn’t watch the show just because I knew of her hateful views and wacky conspiracy theories she was promoting. Some ingenious writing and the strength of the existing characters could save it. Probably won’t happen but just my thoughts ....

So Roseanne's polarizing views were known in the States and her comments didn't come up as a total surprise? I hadn't heard about them before (but I'm not that interested in her anyway so didn't really follow her). I do agree with you, it's really sad that these comments fall back on the other actors of the show and may have an impact on their careers as well.
Her comment about Valerie Jarrett is disgusting and racial and has nothing to do with any sort of humor.

For the last few weeks we had really tropical temperatures (about 90 degrees which is really hot in our area, we usually don't reach these temperatures even in July and August), combined with hot winds which desiccated everything. Last night we had thunderstorms and heavy rains. A town and several villages just ten miles away from my hometown were heavily flooded, people weren't able to leavy their houses, several had to be rescued, some houses have a dangerous structure due to this, there was no electricity. The same had happened just two weeks ago about ten miles away in the opposite direction, damaging other villages. Villages in my hometown had been flooded like never before last July. These floodings have always been described as 'century floodings', meaning thar they only happen every hundred years. Last July's flooding was the third one since the millennium...

25 years ago, neo nazis burned down a house in Germany which was owned by a Turkish family. Five women and children were killed in that fire, eight were seriously injured and had to spend up to one year in hospital, and some have to suffer from their injuries for the rest of their lives. The survivors will have to deal with it for the rest of their lives, while the offenders and murderers have been released from prison. I always admired the mother of the family who - shortly afterwards - had called for absolution and love instead of hate. So I read an article about the memorial which was held yesterday - and then started to read the comments. I was stunned by how people try to turn this into a discussion about integration and used whataboutism by saying: "But what about the German tourists who were killed in bomb attacks in Istanbul and Tunesia during the last years, there's no memorial for them"or "It's their own fault because they don't speak proper German." This has nothing to do with terror attacks in Arab countries which happen regularly and sometimes hit touristic hotspots, meaning that sometimes tourists become victims as well (which, to be honest, is the main reason why there's a wide press coverage in other countries. If there are only local victims, there's mostly just a small not in the newspapers, even when there are hundreds of victims.)
Next Saturday there will be a big neo nazi meeting in a town just 15 miles away, they want to 'prevent the German race' (whatever that is). My husband works in that town and had to move lots of marriages to a place outside the medieval town center (the town was chosen by the neo nazis because Hitler had chosen it as an ideal for a rural town 80 years ago. I decided to march with those who will rally against them, for a multi-cultural living together of different ethnics.
It just makes me sick that the freedom of speech is misused in this context and that there people promoting the same 'values' and slogans as Hitler .

Roseanne Barr has blasted two co-stars for speaking out against her and is backing supporters who blame a liberal witch-hunt for her show's cancellation.
In a return to Twitter, hours after claiming she was quitting the social media platform for good when her eponymous hit show was cancelled, Barr flipped from apologizing for her 'bad joke' about Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to railing against her critics.
Michael Fishman, who played D.J. Conner on the show and started working with Barr when he was just six, was the first to feel the wrath of the show's creator after he released a statement criticizing her racist tweet saying Jarrett looks like the lovechild of the 'Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes'.
'I condemn these statements vehemently,' wrote Fishman, who is the father of a black daughter in the reboot.
'They are reprehensible and intolerable, contradicting my beliefs and outlook on life and society. I have always lived and taught my children to be inclusive. I believe our show strived to embrace different backgrounds and opinions, through open dialogue.'
Barr was none too happy with that statement and fired back on Twitter. 'I created the platform for that inclusivity and you know it. ME. You throw me under the bus. nice!', she wrote.

But Fishman was not the only original cast member to take a stand, with Sara Gilbert, who played Roseanne's daughter Darlene, also releasing a statement that very much echoed the one released shortly after by ABC cancelling the show.
'Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least,' wrote Gilbert, who was a producer on the reboot and largely responsible for reuniting the cast.
'This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love— one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.'
'Wow! unreal,' wrote Barr, who had confessed in earlier interviews to the difficult job Gilbert had of trying to rein in her impulse to tweet offensive comments.

Gilbert, who played Darlene Conner on the series, had earlier slammed Barr's tweets as 'abhorrent'
'I am disappointed in her actions to say the least,' wrote Gilbert, prompting Barr to say: 'Wow! unreal'
However, she later followed up, tweeting: 'No, I understand her position and why she said what she said. i forgive her. It just shocked me a bit, but I indeed f***ed up.'
She reiterated this soon after when a follower criticized Gilbert, saying: 'She's distancing herself from me and my tweet-she has to.'
A downcast Gilbert was photographed on her phone outside an LA restaurant yesterday as John Goodman, who played Barr's husband Dan on the show, looked similarly bereft as he walked his dog in New Orleans.
The stars all have some free time on their hands after ABC swiftly cancelled the series on Tuesday.
Consulting Producer Wanda Sykes may have been the final nail in Barr's coffin. She tweeted saying she was quitting the show moments after the storm took off.
Shortly after ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey released a damning statement and took the show off the air.
Other networks including Viacom also dropped reruns of the original Roseanne as the industry turned its back on the show and its star performer.
Another cast member Emma Kenney said she was preparing to quit the show when she learned of the cancellation.
'I am hurt, embarrassed, and disappointed. The racist and distasteful comments from Roseanne are inexcusable,' said Kenney.
'As I called my manager to quit working on Roseanne, I was told it was cancelled. I feel so empowered by @IAmWandaSykes, Channing Dungey and anyone at ABC standing up for morals and abuse of power. Bullies will NEVER win.'

Barr has also now re-tweeted a number of offensive posts in hopes of showing that it was her politics that ultimately led to her termination.
She has made no secret of her affinity for President Trump, and he even called her the day after the show premiered to record ratings back in March.
President Trump himself also weighed in on Wednesday, writing:
'Maybe if Roseanne had just lied about what she tweeted, blamed non-existent "hackers" and stuck to what was obviously a bogus excuse for weeks, the media would have immediately forgiven her. Oh I forgot, she's a conservative. Totally different rules,' Paul Joseph Watson, editor-at-large of Infowars, said in a tweet that was retweeted by Barr.
'Normal Americans are watching in absolute shock as leftist maniacs indulge in yet another political sacrifice. It won't end well for you guys,' one Twitter user named Thomas Wictor wrote to also be retweeted by Barr.
She also blamed taking Ambien for her 'mistaken' comments about Jarrett before saying she 'thought she [Jarrett] was white'.
She has denied her comments were racist and has furiously attacked those who claim they are.

She even tweeted at Jarrett directly, writing: 'i don't know if u saw it, but I wanted2 apologize to u 4 hurting and upsetting u with an insensitive & tasteless tweet. I am truly sorry-my whole life has been about fighting racism. I made a terrible mistake wh caused hundreds of ppl 2 lose their jobs. so sorry!'
In another tweet, Barr told her fans not to defend her.
'Guys I did something unforgivable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting-it was memorial day too-i went 2 far & do not want it defended-it was egregious Indefensible.'
When critics said Barr was using Ambien as an excuse, she got mad in several instances - saying she blamed herself not the drug.
'no, i didn't i blamed myself. stop lying. Yes, I have an odd ambien experiences on tweeting late at night-like many other ppl do. I BLAME MYSELF OK? it's just an explanation not an excuse, Ok, bully?' she responded in one instance.
Roseanne also tweeted early on Wednesday morning 'I mistakenly thought she [Jarrett] was white' and 'I honestly thought she was Jewish and Persian'.
Jarrett was born in Iran to African-American parents and her great-grandfather was the first credited African American architect.
She said 'the tone starts at the top' during an MSNBC town hall with Al Sharpton, on Tuesday night, adding: 'We like to look up to our President and feel as though he reflects the values of our country.'
'First of all, I think we have to turn it into a teaching moment. I'm fine. I'm worried about all the people out there who don't have a circle of friends and followers coming to their defense.
'The person walking down the street minding their own business and they see someone clinging to their purse or walk across the street... or every black parent I know who has a boy who has to sit down and have a conversation, the talk as we call it.
'Those ordinary examples of racism that happen every single day.'
Barr couldn't resist backing those who supported her and claimed hypocrisy was at work.
Among hundreds of retweets Barr reposted comments including an image of Jarrett's face next to a character from Planet of the Apes, a fake tweet claiming Jarrett had said she wanted to make America more Islamic, and a doctored image of Whoopie Goldberg wearing a t-shirt of Donald Trump shooting himself in the head.
Celebrities have joined the outcry against Roseanne and backed ABC for their decision to axe the show.
Fellow ABC network star Jimmy Kimmel said: 'You're not going to believe this but she tweeted something outrageous.
'I know. The President did it too. It's crazy.'
Calling the show a 'bigly' hit for ABC, in echoes of President Trump, he added that it would be a huge blow to the network because 'we don't have much on'.
'That said, I have an idea that I think makes this work for everyone,' he said, before presenting a tongue-in-cheek trailer for 'Dan' with John Goodman stepping into Barr's shoes.
Tom Arnold, who co-starred on the show from 1989 to 1993 and was married to Barr from 1990 to 1994, praised the decision to cancel the show.
'Ton of respect for Bob Iger. Tough decision with financial consequences for his company but right for America,' he wrote.
'I am repulsed that Valerie Jarret had that racist and bigoted 'joke' made at her expense and I am sickened that any Black or Muslim person has to keep hearing this sickness in 2018,' Patricia Arquette tweeted.
'You can take @RoseanneOnABC out of racism but you can't take the racism out of @therealroseanne,' Don Cheadle wrote.
'I told y'all about Roseanne. I told you. So,' author Roxane Gay added, to which Julianne Moore replied: 'Yes you did. #FireRoseanne.'
Reverend Al Sharpton also criticized the comedian and called on ABC to 'take action now'.
'The comparison by Rosanne Barr on ABC of Former Obama aide, Valerie Jarrett to an APE is racist and inexcusable,' he tweeted.
Tomi Lahren was a rare prominent conservative voice to hit out at Roseanne.
'What Roseanne said was wrong,' she tweeted. 'I'm sure she knows that. She made a mistake.'
'I don't know why fellow conservatives are playing mental gymnastics trying to justify it. Come on. Wrong is wrong.'
Only Rosie O'Donnell appeared to lend some support to Roseanne, writing that she loved her 'quite a bit'.
'The comment Roseanne tweeted was racist and childish and beneath her best self,' O'Donnell wrote.
'She has apologized. Twitter is a dangerous place.'
Jarrett's faith wasn't the only conspiracy theory Barr tried to push on Tuesday.
The comedian also claimed that Chelsea Clinton was married to the nephew of George Soros, a rumor that was propagated by actor Scott Baio in 2016.
'Chelsea Soros Clinton,' Barr tweeted.
The theory was quickly and swiftly dismantled. Clinton is married to Marc Mezvinsky. Meanwhile, George Soros has two sons named Peter and Jeffrey Soros.
But Chelsea Clinton herself was quick to respond to Barr, writing: 'Good morning Roseanne - my given middle name is Victoria. I imagine George Soros's nephews are lovely people. I'm just not married to one.'
Barr first apologized to Clinton directly, tweeting: 'Sorry to have tweeted incorrect info about you! Please forgive me!'
'By the way, George Soros is a nazi who turned in his fellow Jews 2 be murdered in German concentration camps & stole their wealth-were you aware of that?'
In a separate tweet, Barr wrote: 'I'm sorry-Chelsea Clinton IS NOT married to a nephew of George Soros-i apologize for the mistake!'
A spokesman for Soros has since vehemently denied Barr's claims, calling the comments 'insulting' and an 'affront to his family'.
'[Mr Soros] did not collaborate with Nazis,' the statement read. 'He did not help round up people. He did not confiscate anybody's property.'
'Such allegations are insulting to the victims of the Holocaust, to all Jewish people, and to anyone who honors the truth.'
Soros was 13 when he and his family, who are Jewish, survived the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Hungary by purchasing documents who claimed they were Christian.
While Roseanne Barr's tweet about Jarrett was the final straw for ABC, the comedian has been stirring up controversy on Twitter for years.
Barr came under fire on the very night the revival of Roseanne premiered in April when she accused Parkland shooting survivor David Hogg of giving a 'Nazi Salute'.

ABC initially ordered 13 episodes for the second season and said the show would move away from its controversial politics and focus on family.
The show most recently came under fire for featuring an episode in which Barr's character believes her new Muslim neighbors are terrorists.
Roseanne's mention of the 'Muslim brotherhood' in her Tuesday tweet seems to be due to the long-running conspiracy theory that Jarrett is Muslim.
Jarrett, who was Obama's senior adviser during his presidency, was born in Iran to American parents and lived in Shiraz for six years.
The family had moved to Iran because her father was part of a program that sent American physicians to help developing countries. He ran a children's hospital.
There has never been any indication that Jarrett or her parents are Muslim.
Barr later claimed the comment was a 'joke' when she was called out on Twitter by CNN reporter Andrew Kaczynski.
'ABC is doing their best to ignore some of these statements from Roseanne and she is making it really hard for them by taking it to the next level here,' he wrote.
After Roseanne responded, Kaczynski replied: 'understand it's a joke, but can you see why some people think comparing a black woman to Planet of the Apes might be racist and find the Muslim Brotherhood reference to be conspiratorial and Islamophobic?'

Roseanne Barr has blasted two co-stars for speaking out against her and is backing supporters who blame a liberal witch-hunt for her show's cancellation.
In a return to Twitter, hours after claiming she was quitting the social media platform for good when her eponymous hit show was cancelled, Barr flipped from apologizing for her 'bad joke' about Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett to railing against her critics.
Michael Fishman, who played D.J. Conner on the show and started working with Barr when he was just six, was the first to feel the wrath of the show's creator after he released a statement criticizing her racist tweet saying Jarrett looks like the lovechild of the 'Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes'.
'I condemn these statements vehemently,' wrote Fishman, who is the father of a black daughter in the reboot.
'They are reprehensible and intolerable, contradicting my beliefs and outlook on life and society. I have always lived and taught my children to be inclusive. I believe our show strived to embrace different backgrounds and opinions, through open dialogue.'
Barr was none too happy with that statement and fired back on Twitter. 'I created the platform for that inclusivity and you know it. ME. You throw me under the bus. nice!', she wrote.

Consulting Producer Wanda Sykes may have been the final nail in Barr's coffin. She tweeted saying she was quitting the show moments after the storm took off.
Shortly after ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey released a damning statement and took the show off the air.
Other networks including Viacom also dropped reruns of the original Roseanne as the industry turned its back on the show and its star performer.
Another cast member Emma Kenney said she was preparing to quit the show when she learned of the cancellation.
'I am hurt, embarrassed, and disappointed. The racist and distasteful comments from Roseanne are inexcusable,' said Kenney.
'As I called my manager to quit working on Roseanne, I was told it was cancelled. I feel so empowered by @IAmWandaSykes, Channing Dungey and anyone at ABC standing up for morals and abuse of power. Bullies will NEVER win.'

Barr has also now re-tweeted a number of offensive posts in hopes of showing that it was her politics that ultimately led to her termination.
She has made no secret of her affinity for President Trump, and he even called her the day after the show premiered to record ratings back in March.
President Trump himself also weighed in on Wednesday, writing:

When critics said Barr was using Ambien as an excuse, she got mad in several instances - saying she blamed herself not the drug.

Roseanne also tweeted early on Wednesday morning 'I mistakenly thought she [Jarrett] was white' and 'I honestly thought she was Jewish and Persian'.

'The person walking down the street minding their own business and they see someone clinging to their purse or walk across the street... or every black parent I know who has a boy who has to sit down and have a conversation, the talk as we call it.
'Those ordinary examples of racism that happen every single day.'
Barr couldn't resist backing those who supported her and claimed hypocrisy was at work.
Among hundreds of retweets Barr reposted comments including an image of Jarrett's face next to a character from Planet of the Apes, a fake tweet claiming Jarrett had said she wanted to make America more Islamic, and a doctored image of Whoopie Goldberg wearing a t-shirt of Donald Trump shooting himself in the head.
Celebrities have joined the outcry against Roseanne and backed ABC for their decision to axe the show.
Fellow ABC network star Jimmy Kimmel said: 'You're not going to believe this but she tweeted something outrageous.
'I know. The President did it too. It's crazy.'
Calling the show a 'bigly' hit for ABC, in echoes of President Trump, he added that it would be a huge blow to the network because 'we don't have much on'.
'That said, I have an idea that I think makes this work for everyone,' he said, before presenting a tongue-in-cheek trailer for 'Dan' with John Goodman stepping into Barr's shoes.
Tom Arnold, who co-starred on the show from 1989 to 1993 and was married to Barr from 1990 to 1994, praised the decision to cancel the show.
'Ton of respect for Bob Iger. Tough decision with financial consequences for his company but right for America,' he wrote.
'I am repulsed that Valerie Jarret had that racist and bigoted 'joke' made at her expense and I am sickened that any Black or Muslim person has to keep hearing this sickness in 2018,' Patricia Arquette tweeted.
'You can take @RoseanneOnABC out of racism but you can't take the racism out of @therealroseanne,' Don Cheadle wrote.
'I told y'all about Roseanne. I told you. So,' author Roxane Gay added, to which Julianne Moore replied: 'Yes you did. #FireRoseanne.'
Reverend Al Sharpton also criticized the comedian and called on ABC to 'take action now'.
'The comparison by Rosanne Barr on ABC of Former Obama aide, Valerie Jarrett to an APE is racist and inexcusable,' he tweeted.
Tomi Lahren was a rare prominent conservative voice to hit out at Roseanne.
'What Roseanne said was wrong,' she tweeted. 'I'm sure she knows that. She made a mistake.'
'I don't know why fellow conservatives are playing mental gymnastics trying to justify it. Come on. Wrong is wrong.'
Only Rosie O'Donnell appeared to lend some support to Roseanne, writing that she loved her 'quite a bit'.
'The comment Roseanne tweeted was racist and childish and beneath her best self,' O'Donnell wrote.
'She has apologized. Twitter is a dangerous place.'
Jarrett's faith wasn't the only conspiracy theory Barr tried to push on Tuesday.
The comedian also claimed that Chelsea Clinton was married to the nephew of George Soros, a rumor that was propagated by actor Scott Baio in 2016.

The theory was quickly and swiftly dismantled. Clinton is married to Marc Mezvinsky. Meanwhile, George Soros has two sons named Peter and Jeffrey Soros.
But Chelsea Clinton herself was quick to respond to Barr, writing: 'Good morning Roseanne - my given middle name is Victoria. I imagine George Soros's nephews are lovely people. I'm just not married to one.'
Barr first apologized to Clinton directly, tweeting: 'Sorry to have tweeted incorrect info about you! Please forgive me!'
'By the way, George Soros is a nazi who turned in his fellow Jews 2 be murdered in German concentration camps & stole their wealth-were you aware of that?'
In a separate tweet, Barr wrote: 'I'm sorry-Chelsea Clinton IS NOT married to a nephew of George Soros-i apologize for the mistake!'
A spokesman for Soros has since vehemently denied Barr's claims, calling the comments 'insulting' and an 'affront to his family'.

Roseanne Barr was back on Twitter Wednesday morning just five hours after signing off around 3am local time in Hawaii.
And the actress wasted no time addressing the controversy over her Valerie Jarrett tweet, writing: 'I'm not a racist, I never was & I never will be. One stupid joke in a lifetime of fighting 4 civil rights 4 all minorities, against networks, studios, at the expense of my nervous system/family/wealth will NEVER b taken from me.'
That comment came hours after Barr retweeted a outlandish statement suggesting that Michelle Obama played a role in her firing.
'According to sources ABC President Channing Dungey had a long conversation via phone with former First Lady Michelle Obama before deciding to cancel the Roseanne show,' read the tweet.
'Michelle Obama was reportedly enraged and insisted an apology was inadequate.'
Barr also retweeted a post that further suggested this was an attempt by the Obamas to get revenge after she mocked the couple's Netflix deal with a hashtag last week that became a trending topic.
'Interesting. A few days after the popular #ObmasNetflixShows was all over the place making people giggle. Not surprised and I would not doubt it being very true,' read the post that Barr shared with her followers.
These were just two of the conspiracy theories retweeted by Barr in the wake of the show's cancellation.

That was posted eight hours after ABC announced the show had been cancelled.
He then lashed out at those attacking his mother, writing: 'Let’s not bash the actors for not defending Mom. All she did was get them careers and was never racist for a second ever in her life so you can’t expect them to say that when they are trying to spin this for publicity to get another job.'
He also commented on a post by stating: 'It's Hollywood. Only rapists get defended.'
Barr also called her tweet 'insensitive' and not 'racist,' while telling her supporters: 'you guys make me feel like fighting back. I will examine all of my options carefully and get back to U.'

'Normal Americans are watching in absolute shock as leftist maniacs indulge in yet another political sacrifice. It won't end well for you guys,' one Twitter user named Thomas Wictor wrote to also be retweeted by Barr.
Barr also blamed taking Ambien for her 'mistaken' comments about Jarrett before saying she 'thought she [Jarrett] was white'.
She even tweeted at Jarrett directly, writing: 'i don't know if u saw it, but I wanted2 apologize to u 4 hurting and upsetting u with an insensitive & tasteless tweet. I am truly sorry-my whole life has been about fighting racism. I made a terrible mistake wh caused hundreds of ppl 2 lose their jobs. so sorry!'
In another tweet, Barr told her fans not to defend her.
'Guys I did something unforgivable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting-it was memorial day too-i went 2 far & do not want it defended-it was egregious Indefensible.'

Roseanne Barr was back on Twitter Wednesday morning just five hours after signing off around 3am local time in Hawaii.
And the actress wasted no time addressing the controversy over her Valerie Jarrett tweet, writing: 'I'm not a racist, I never was & I never will be. One stupid joke in a lifetime of fighting 4 civil rights 4 all minorities, against networks, studios, at the expense of my nervous system/family/wealth will NEVER b taken from me.'
That comment came hours after Barr retweeted a outlandish statement suggesting that Michelle Obama played a role in her firing.
'According to sources ABC President Channing Dungey had a long conversation via phone with former First Lady Michelle Obama before deciding to cancel the Roseanne show,' read the tweet.
'Michelle Obama was reportedly enraged and insisted an apology was inadequate.'
Barr also retweeted a post that further suggested this was an attempt by the Obamas to get revenge after she mocked the couple's Netflix deal with a hashtag last week that became a trending topic.
'Interesting. A few days after the popular #ObmasNetflixShows was all over the place making people giggle. Not surprised and I would not doubt it being very true,' read the post that Barr shared with her followers.
These were just two of the conspiracy theories retweeted by Barr in the wake of the show's cancellation.

At the same time, Barr's son Jake shared text exchanges with his mother to prove she was not racist.
'Her and her dad, I thought they were white,' writes Barr in a text message she purportedly sent her son.
She followed that up by saying: 'I would never have called a black woman an ape I'm not stupid!'
The third text stated: 'I thought she was Jewish of Iranian.'
Her son captioned the image by writing: 'Mom and I are too dumb for the internet lol.'
That was posted eight hours after ABC announced the show had been cancelled.
He then lashed out at those attacking his mother, writing: 'Let’s not bash the actors for not defending Mom. All she did was get them careers and was never racist for a second ever in her life so you can’t expect them to say that when they are trying to spin this for publicity to get another job.'
He also commented on a post by stating: 'It's Hollywood. Only rapists get defended.'
Barr also called her tweet 'insensitive' and not 'racist,' while telling her supporters: 'you guys make me feel like fighting back. I will examine all of my options carefully and get back to U.'
She also lamented the fact that 'diversity is not allowed on the left.'
Barr had previously blasted two of her co-stars for speaking out against her in tweets posted around midnight.
Hours after claiming she was quitting Twitter, Barr began to rail against her critics while also posting an occasional apology.
Michael Fishman, who played D.J. Conner on the show and started working with Barr when he was just six, was the first to feel the wrath of the show's creator after he released a statement criticizing her racist tweet saying Jarrett looks like the lovechild of the 'Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes'.
'I condemn these statements vehemently,' wrote Fishman, who is the father of a black daughter in the reboot.
'They are reprehensible and intolerable, contradicting my beliefs and outlook on life and society. I have always lived and taught my children to be inclusive. I believe our show strived to embrace different backgrounds and opinions, through open dialogue.'
Barr was none too happy with that statement and fired back on Twitter. 'I created the platform for that inclusivity and you know it. ME. You throw me under the bus. nice!', she wrote.
Fishman responded, stating: 'You fought, built, and designed Roseanne for inclusiveness. That is why yesterday was so out of character with the last 30 years. It was in your hands from the beginning to the end. No one can deny that.'
Barr fired back: 'Please leave me alone, thanks.'

But Fishman was not the only original cast member to take a stand, with Sara Gilbert, who played Roseanne's daughter Darlene, also releasing a statement that very much echoed the one released shortly after by ABC cancelling the show.
'Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least,' wrote Gilbert, who was a producer on the reboot and largely responsible for reuniting the cast.
'This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love— one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.'
'Wow! unreal,' wrote Barr, who had confessed in earlier interviews to the difficult job Gilbert had of trying to rein in her impulse to tweet offensive comments.
However, she later followed up, tweeting: 'No, I understand her position and why she said what she said. i forgive her. It just shocked me a bit, but I indeed f***ed up.'
She reiterated this soon after when a follower criticized Gilbert, saying: 'She's distancing herself from me and my tweet-she has to.'
A downcast Gilbert was photographed on her phone outside an LA restaurant yesterday as John Goodman, who played Barr's husband Dan on the show, looked similarly bereft as he walked his dog in New Orleans.

Not enough, however, has been said about the many men and women who poured their hearts and lives into the show and were just getting started on next season. Consulting Producer Wanda Sykes may have been the final nail in Barr's coffin. She tweeted saying she was quitting the show moments after the storm took off.
'I will not be returning to @RoseanneOnABC,' announced Sykes on Twitter.
Shortly after ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey released a damning statement and took the show off the air.
Other networks including Viacom also dropped reruns of the original Roseanne as the industry turned its back on the show and its star performer.
Another cast member Emma Kenney said she was preparing to quit the show when she learned of the cancellation.
'I am hurt, embarrassed, and disappointed. The racist and distasteful comments from Roseanne are inexcusable,' said Kenney.
'As I called my manager to quit working on Roseanne, I was told it was cancelled. I feel so empowered by @IAmWandaSykes, Channing Dungey and anyone at ABC standing up for morals and abuse of power. Bullies will NEVER win.'
The commander-in-chief is on her side though it would appear.
Barr has made no secret of her affinity for President Trump, and he even called her the day after the show premiered to record ratings back in March.
President Trump himself also weighed in on Wednesday, writing: 'Bob Iger of ABC called Valerie Jarrett to let her know that “ABC does not tolerate comments like those” made by Roseanne Barr. Gee, he never called President Donald J. Trump to apologize for the HORRIBLE statements made and said about me on ABC. Maybe I just didn’t get the call?'

An eight-year-old boy has been captured on camera stopping to help an elderly woman in Georgia.
Riley Duncan recorded the heartwarming video as he watched Maurice Adams Jr hop out of his mom's car and run over to help the woman up the stairs.
Duncan posted the video on Facebook with the caption: 'Thank God for our youth.' The boy was unaware he was being filmed.

Amid fallout from supporter Roseanne Barr’s bigoted tweets, President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he pardoned Dinesh D’Souza, a conservative commentator, author and filmmaker known for spreading false conspiracy theories about everyone from the Obamas to Adolph Hitler.
And in what some see as a signal to his pals under indictment or investigation in the Russia investigation and other criminal probes, Trump told reporters he is also considering pardoning former fellow Apprentice host Martha Stewart, who served time for insider trading, and commuting the prison sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, whom Trump once fired on The Celebrity Apprentice.
D’Souza pleaded guilty to a felony campaign finance violation in 2014, but on Thursday morning Trump tweeted: “Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D’Souza today. He was treated very unfairly by our government!”

An official White House statement said that in the president’s opinion, D’Souza was a “a victim of selective prosecution for violations of campaign finance laws,” and that he is “fully worthy of this pardon” after completing “community service by teaching English to citizens and immigrants seeking citizenship.”

But D’Souza has a history of making wild and inaccurate claims.
In just the last year, he suggested that last year’s Charlottesville deadly hate rally run by white supremacists was actually staged by liberals (it wasn’t), defended Hitler by calling him “NOT anti gay” (despite the Hitler regime sending tens of thousands of people to concentration camps because they were gay), shared a meme calling Obama a “gay Muslim” and suggested Michelle Obama is a man.
He also started a conspiracy theory that the media was covering up Las Vegas mass murderer Stephen Paddock’s background as an anti-Trump activist, which he wasn’t. And in February, he mocked the survivors of the mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school.
Aboard Air Force One on Thursday, Trump told reporters that he’s considering pardoning Stewart, who served time in federal prison following her conviction in 2004 of obstructing justice and lying to investigators about a conspicuously-timed stock sale.
“I think to a certain extent Martha Stewart was harshly and unfairly treated,” Trump said. “And she used to be my biggest fan in the world … before I became a politician. But that’s okay, I don’t view it that way.”

Trump also told reporters that he believes Blagojevich — who was removed from office and convicted of numerous corruption charges — was just “being stupid.”
“What he did does not justify 18 years in a jail,” Trump said of the 14-year sentence. “If you read his statement, it was a foolish statement, there was a lot of bravado. But … plenty of other politicians have said a lot worse. And … he shouldn’t have been put in jail.”

Trump had Blagojevich on as a Celebrity Apprentice contestant before the former governor’s conviction in 2010 on corruption charges related to the selling of President Barack Obama’s former Senate seat. Stewart hosted a spinoff of The Apprentice in 2005.
Critics have taken Twitter to say Trump’s pardon process, which has taken place outside traditional Justice Department channels, is a means to undermine the Russia investigation. Some claim he’s sending a message to former associates who may feel pressure to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller that he will protect them.
California Congressman Adam Schiff, a Democrat and former prosecutor, tweeted that Trump’s pardon of D’Souza was a continuing “abuse of power” and that the campaign finance laws D’Souza pleaded guilty to breaking were “not unlike concealment of Stormy Daniels payment. @POTUS says unfair. Why, because he was caught? Trying to send a message to Michael Cohen?”

Amid fallout from supporter Roseanne Barr’s bigoted tweets, President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he pardoned Dinesh D’Souza, a conservative commentator, author and filmmaker known for spreading false conspiracy theories about everyone from the Obamas to Adolph Hitler.
And in what some see as a signal to his pals under indictment or investigation in the Russia investigation and other criminal probes, Trump told reporters he is also considering pardoning former fellow Apprentice host Martha Stewart, who served time for insider trading, and commuting the prison sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, whom Trump once fired on The Celebrity Apprentice.
D’Souza pleaded guilty to a felony campaign finance violation in 2014, but on Thursday morning Trump tweeted: “Will be giving a Full Pardon to Dinesh D’Souza today. He was treated very unfairly by our government!”

But D’Souza has a history of making wild and inaccurate claims.
In just the last year, he suggested that last year’s Charlottesville deadly hate rally run by white supremacists was actually staged by liberals (it wasn’t), defended Hitler by calling him “NOT anti gay” (despite the Hitler regime sending tens of thousands of people to concentration camps because they were gay), shared a meme calling Obama a “gay Muslim” and suggested Michelle Obama is a man.
He also started a conspiracy theory that the media was covering up Las Vegas mass murderer Stephen Paddock’s background as an anti-Trump activist, which he wasn’t. And in February, he mocked the survivors of the mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school.
Aboard Air Force One on Thursday, Trump told reporters that he’s considering pardoning Stewart, who served time in federal prison following her conviction in 2004 of obstructing justice and lying to investigators about a conspicuously-timed stock sale.
“I think to a certain extent Martha Stewart was harshly and unfairly treated,” Trump said. “And she used to be my biggest fan in the world … before I became a politician. But that’s okay, I don’t view it that way.”

Trump also told reporters that he believes Blagojevich — who was removed from office and convicted of numerous corruption charges — was just “being stupid.”

Trump had Blagojevich on as a Celebrity Apprentice contestant before the former governor’s conviction in 2010 on corruption charges related to the selling of President Barack Obama’s former Senate seat. Stewart hosted a spinoff of The Apprentice in 2005.
Critics have taken Twitter to say Trump’s pardon process, which has taken place outside traditional Justice Department channels, is a means to undermine the Russia investigation. Some claim he’s sending a message to former associates who may feel pressure to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller that he will protect them.
California Congressman Adam Schiff, a Democrat and former prosecutor, tweeted that Trump’s pardon of D’Souza was a continuing “abuse of power” and that the campaign finance laws D’Souza pleaded guilty to breaking were “not unlike concealment of Stormy Daniels payment. @POTUS says unfair. The latest spasm of violence in a year marred by assaults on the nation's schools, the shooting at Santa Fe High School was the latest to test the president's role as national comforter-in-chief.
Trump met with more than two dozen people affected by the shooting, and did not publicly share his message for the grieving families and local leaders during a meeting at a Coast Guard base outside Houston.
Pamela Stanich - whose 17-year-old son, Jared Black, was among the eight students killed - was one of the parents who met with Trump, presenting him with a family statement and a copy of her son's eulogy.

'These events are very tragic, whenever they happen. And you know, the president wants to extend his condolences and talk about the issue of school safety,' spokesman Raj Shah told Fox News Channel.

Abbott, a Republican and a staunch gun-rights supporter, has called for schools to have more armed personnel and said they should put greater focus on spotting student mental health problems. Investigators say student Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, carried out the attack with a shotgun and pistol that belonged to his father. Classes at Santa Fe High School resumed Tuesday for the first time since the shooting.
As the Parkland students became vocal advocates for gun control, embracing their public positions as few school survivors had before, Trump quickly became a focal point for their anger. Tody, I went to protest against Neo Nazis from the whole of Germany who met just 15 miles away from my hometown. They rallyed against 'the commingling of our race with others', i.g. against aliens in Germany. Several of them have already been sentenced to jail due to battery, hate speeches (sedition) and libel, so they are really nice people as you can imagine.
They were about 200, we were about 3,000
, so that was a success. The protest was coordinated by political parties, churches and unions, we were aged from toddler to about 80 year old people. Unfortunately, there also were a few left extremists as well, but the police did a great job in deescalating. The two groups - Neo Nazis and protesters - were separated , we marched through the town center, guided by the mayor, the district administrator and our former Secretary of state (who lives there). Afterwards there were speeches and international music, it was really inspiring, and I stayed there for about five hours.
When I watched a report in the news this evening, I realized that the Neo Nazis didn't use the German flag but one which had been used during the Nazi era (there werevtwo, one with a swastika which is not allowed to be used anymore, and one which isn't forbidden by law because it had occasionally been used before but isn't used in public since then.
I'm really satisfied that I joined the protests. Of course I thought if it wasn't better if we ignored the Neo Nazis and their rallyes completely, but I don't think it would work.

When I came home from the protests, i met a neighbor. She's nearly 80 and very old fashioned. We had a little chat, and then she told me that her youngest granddaughter just finished university and now does some work and travel. At the moment she works on a farm in Canada for two months, she'll travel to Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore and will return before christmas. I said that I admire the young woman for her courage to do so and that it's just the right time now before starting a job. Her grandma told me that that's just a waste of money and time, and I said that her granddaughter won't see it as a waste at all.
My neighbor continued with - of course - worrying about her safety (which I really understand) and 'I simply don't understand why she needs to go to university because one day she'll marry'.
I asked her if she thinks the same about her grandson who's still studying. 'No, but she's a girl! A man needs to earn money to feed his family!'
'But you know that women are allowed to work - don't even need their husbands' allowance anymore, and can continue even with kids?'
'But that's not normal! And she told me that she doesn't need a husband!' That's horrible!'
And I replied: 'No, that's the 21st century! Women can study, stay single, work as a maried woman with kids and travel the world!'
She finally said:'You don't understand me!'
'I do understand you perfectly. But the difference to your youth is that women have a choice. There are women who are perfectly happy working in a shop or office, marry, have kids and give up their jobs to stay at home. That's okay. Aybe Roseanne has a multiple-personality disorder - I wouldn't question it since I don't know her and don't follow her. But articles over the last week mentioned lots of abhorrend tweets from her which in the past never seemed to have consequences.
So if Roseanne knows that she has this disorder and can't name them, why doesn't she stay away from social medias? Why wasn't she able to really apologize, explain her mental disorder and decide to stay away from social medias?

Carolhathaway - Maybe it depends on which of her many personalities is "out" at the time. Is it possible that she suffers from DID? Sure. It usually happens when a child is confronted with a traumatic situation they can't cope with and maybe that really did happen to her. BUT - she's a grown woman now, who went into therapy for this disorder in 1994 - 24 years ago! IMO, by now she should know how to manage the disorder, and if she can't the people around her should. It just seems to me to be a very convenient excuse for bad behavior.

A comedian I know is friends with Barr. The comedian actually wrote some of Barr's funnier stuff. Anyway, the comedian and I have an idea for a sitcom, for which we wrote a treatment and the pilot, and submitted to Barr's production company.
Barr went from interested and accommodating to critical and mean to 'forgetful' and indifferent with dizzying speed. We finally just stopped dealing with her. Or, I did. I just told the comedian to let me know if they ever had a conversation of consequence. Apparently, they haven't.

I was at a speaking event last fall when Leslie Stahl was one of the speakers. She related the same story. The thing is Trump believes and has been allowed to get away with just about everything. He is far more emboldened now than he ever has been. Look at how he and his cohorts have muddied the waters of the Mueller investigation. He has and will continue to lie about anything because he gets away with it. He has seen his poll numbers go up a bit and a Trump Congress that has enabled him all the way. He is relentless and will not stop until the voters get rid of him by voting him out ... first via the midterm elections and then the big one in 2020!

I was reading a piece today about the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and it got me thinking of all the really good men we've lost. How in God's name did we go from people like RFK, JFK and even George HW Bush (and pretty much anyone who ever held office before now) to the useless, worthless, destructive dictator wannabe in the White House today?
I've heard people say it was a shame the plots to assassinate Hitler failed and if they could travel back in time they would do something to keep him from coming to power. I think, in the future, people will speak about trump the same way. I just hope he doesn't get to serve a second term.

PAN - Only one of many reasons I refuse to use Facebook. It's interesting that lately there have been several articles in the press about tech workers who refuse to let their children use the technology they've developed. They feel it's detrimental to their personal development. I couldn't agree more.

We've got a new data privacy law in the EU since last Friday which brought a lot of restrictions for most of the countries in the EU (not many restrictions for Germany since we had quite a strict national law in Germany before). But Facebook used to have the datas of all its worldwide clients (apart from the US and Canadian clients) in Ireland and changed this. Ireland now just hosts the datas for all EU clients, and the datas for the rest of the world have been changed to servers somewhere else.
Any idea why?

But propaganda really is a serious threat for democracy and influences us - we all aren't immune to it.
I've talked about the demonstration against intolerance and Neo Nazis I joined on Saturday. Later, I read comments about it on a newssite which reported about the two rallyes and also showed a 5 minute video about it. Nearly all of the comments talked about our peaceful demonstration, joined by about 3,000 people, lots of kids amongst us, in a negative way. Hardly anybody discussed the Neo nazi demonstration or the fact that they choose a town, try to bring as many Nazis from all over Germany to this town and tell us about their view of the world and how bad immigration is for our nation. And none of them said that he had been there as well.
If I hadn't been marching there as well, I'd gotten a completely wrong impression about what had happened there...

Agree carol. Political propaganda has been and is a real threat to our democracies. It has been around forever but never so prevalent as it is now. It has now infiltrated the White House. Social media is the beast that drives the news of ‘persuasion’ these days. And it has had amazing success across the globe. Unfortunately it has been almost more harmful and negatively insinuating into our culture than helpful and positive. It’s a good thing that the EU has implemented some restrictions. I have to believe the U.S. is going to have to do the same eventually ... if we can get a Congress to mutually agree on regulating the likes of Facebook, etc.
