President Donald Trump said Friday he will uphold a ban on importing trophies of elephants hunted and killed in Zimbabwe, pending further review, reversing his own administration's decision from just a day earlier after a public outcry.
'Put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as I review all conservation facts. Under study for years. Will update soon with Secretary Zinke. Thank you!' Trump tweeted.
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said the pair came to the decision after they 'talked and both believe that conservation and healthy herds are critical.'

Just hours before, Trump's spokeswoman Sarah Sanders had defended the US Fish and Wildlife Service's move to end the 2014 ban initiated under Trump's predecessor Barack Obama.
The service said Thursday that it would begin issuing permits to import 'sport-hunted trophies from elephants hunted in Zimbabwe' between January 21, 2016 and December 31, 2018.
Zambia would also have been covered under the revised rule.
The move was met with a barrage of criticism from animal rights groups and activists.

The move is 'a cruel decision backed by Zimbabwe's crazy dictator and it confirms the sick and deadly power you assert over the entire plant and animal kingdom,' the 83-year-old actress added.
'Your shameful actions confirm the rumors that you are unfit for office.'
According to the Great Elephant Census project, African Savanna elephant populations fell by 30 percent between 2007 and 2014, while Zimbabwe saw a drop of six percent.
Despite an overall fall in poaching, Africa's elephant population has declined in part because of continued illegal killing, said a report this year by CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
African ivory, in particular, is highly sought in China where it is a status symbol.
A provision in the Endangered Species Act says the import of such trophies can be legal if accompanied by proof that the hunting benefits broader conservation of the species.
Trump's sons are known to have a passion for hunting.

Because his sons and other friends asked him to do him that favor, and he didn't expect it to make waves? I don't know the content of his head, but if there are any brain cells left, he should use them before tweeting, speaking and signing - let's just say: before acting! Because that's what everybody else does...

Trump is deplete of brain cells for sure. His stupidity in trying to reverse this ban was most likely motivated by his desire to undo another Obama action. I think he got a lot of backlash from so many groups, including conservatives over lifting the ban that he had to actually use his brain and walk it all back. There are so many reported and underreported actions being taken in our government agencies right now that are going to be consequential to the future of our environment, safety and justice system. It is shocking stuff.

It's terrifying how fragile our system of government is. With so many positions unfilled and so many responsible politicians and career government workers walking away pretty soon we won't have a government - just Trump and his cronies doing whatever they want.

Just a thought: Don Jr. went a long time angry at his father. Maybe the elephant he really wants to shoot is the 2-legged one presently in the White House. Maybe he should invite him on a hunting trip and pull a Cheney (but with better aim). (jk, I think)

I'm sure that many of his actions are a try to abstract from the scandals he's causing and the investigations against him. My suggestion is that this red herring doesn't work. But last week I read a list of the scandals since Trump had been elected and have to admit that I'd forgotten about some of them since there were so many...
And I'm also stunned about the power and its - IMO - misuse I could have never imagined.

I was so disappointed to hear tonight that Charlie Rose has been called out by about eight women for sexual harassment. He was suspended from the morning news show he hosts and PBS has halted his interview show.

The stories these women are telling about Charlie Rose are so disturbing. I'm so glad women are finding the courage to come forward finally.

Every time I get an alert on my phone these days it's "Harvey Weinstein accused of assault", "Kevin Spacey accused of groping", "Al Franken accused of Harassment". I'm so conditioned to expect something awful that when I got the alert the other day about George's upcoming TV show, all I saw at first was "George Clooney..." and MY HEART STOPPED. I don't expect George to turn up in any of this, but I think we're far from done with the revelations of powerful famous men being terrible.

Missa - This can go on forever. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a man who hasn't done something stupid that can be construed as harassment. What's starting to get me really annoyed is the women who were so traumatized that it still bothers them but nevertheless they stayed on the job for months or years and did little or nothing to stop the situation at the time.

I also think we're lumping all men who have acted inappropriately together under the label of "predator". IMO, that is patently unfair. An unwanted neck massage, a pat on the ass, even Charlie Rose running around semi-nude is harassment. It's annoying and stupid, but guys like Franken and Rose aren't going to physically hurt you. Standing your ground might cost you a job, and that isn't fair, but no one said life is fair.

  The real predators are guys like Weinstein, Trump and Moore. They're the rapists and abusers who feel entitled to use force to get what they want. They're the ones who don't know the meaning of the word "No". What does it say about us when the women of Alabama still support Moore (a pedophile) for Congress? What does it say about us when there are still women who make excuses for Trump?

All of Rose's accusers told someone in their life (a partner, a friend, a relative) at the time of his attacks. Most of the women in the story reported his behavior to his longtime, female producer; she did nothing, and admits that in the story.  He owns his show; there is no HR person or higher-up to report him to.  Every woman in the story I read left her job, some the field of journalism entirely. I'm not sure how you can read the story of Rose physically pressing his entire body onto a young employee strapped into an airplane seat, or repeatedly putting his hands down the pants of an employee who was pushing him away and weeping, and think it's anything other than predatory and sexual assault. Talk about not knowing the meaning of the word "No".

We can't start grading on a curve just because people we might like are facing awful accusations.  Men can't put their hands on women without their consent, full stop.  (And vice versa). It's all bad. It's not rape and it's not child molestation, but is that really the argument you want to be making? "It's bad, but it's not like he groped a 14 year old"? 

Charlie Rose assaulted a woman at his home, and when he found out she'd told a friend about it, immediately fired her.  He recognized what he was doing was wrong, and so should we.  He should lose his job, Franken should resign, and so should the next person on "our" side whose past behavior catches up to him, and the one after that, and the one after that. 2017 is turning into the Year or Consequences for Rich White Men, and I am here for it.

It beggars belief quite frankly that as men of power in all sorts of areas fall and lose their reputations, the leader of the country who has been taken to court and sued so many times on similar charges remains 'at large' and continues apparently on his merry way..........

PAN - I agree totally. There is a chance that the rape charge against him might actually go forward. Fingers crossed.

Missa - Sorry to disagree, but there is a difference between a rapist and a jerk. Charlie Rose is a jerk. Yes, some of the women quit rather than continue to work with him - but others stayed  and put up with him because they wanted the job. Choices. Priorities.

I just can't make two wrongs into a right. Sexual harassment is wrong. So is gleefully demolishing a person's life's work to give yourself "closure" decades after the event.

It's a tricky thing:
To say 'Yes, he raped a woman but at least didn't rape a 14 ywar old girl' means to relativize a crime. We do the same with murder - but the result is the same: somebody was killed by another person. In this case a woman is raped by a man. I guess it's worse when she's only 14, but irrespective of her age, there are women who are able to cope with what happened to them, and others are suffering their whole lives.
Fortunately the opinion on 'What's an appropriate behaviour, and what's inappropriate' has changed. Folliwing the 'MeToo' campaign, I've read so many things that I couldn't believe it: a boss telling a 17 year old trainee that she needed to go to a conference with him because he needs her assistance for a presentation, and when they got there, she found out that he'd booked just one hotel room - with a king-size bed. And when she refused to share it with him, he said he was confused because in his opinion she had agreed to have sex with him because she agreed to come to the conference with him.

This has to stop, and if there's one positive effect of this scandal, it's that we talk about it, realize that it happens everywhere and that it has to stop!

Over the last few weeks I thought: 'How does a celebrity like George handle (at least in the past) it when he wanted to have sex but was a single man - let's just say, when he was shooting 'Momuments Men' in my area where he spent about four months?' I guess there were women who were willing to sleep with him, but how does he make sure he's not accused to have raped or at least sexually harassed her? I'm sure he and Amal signed an agreement before their relation became serious, but would a celebrity do this every time he wanted sex? Or would he need to rely on prostitutes? Quite depressive IMO...

I think some men are plain stupid and disrespectful, I do think there is a difference between this and being a predator.

I think this is a wake up call for men and women, men should know now how to conduct themselves. Women now know they should and can speak up.

I think all these women had choices and chose to prioritize them.  I know some were afraid but your self respect should be first no one should be allowed to disrespect you in anyway. Yes you could lose your job and yes some may not believe you,
but at least you tried and it is out there on the record.

If I offended Missa I apologize. I'm wondering if our different attitudes are generational. Growing up I was taught that not all men act appropriately and not all situations are safe. It was at least in part my responsibility to avoid them if I could and know how to get out of them if they couldn't be avoided. I always knew that I didn't have to tolerate some man's unwanted advances and had the right to say "Stop it!" How I responded was my choice. (Not talking about physically violent situations.)

I think younger generations have a sense of entitlement that extends to how the world treats them. They expect to be treated well and fairly. When that doesn't happen they are outraged - and maybe that's a good thing. Maybe it will provide the impetus for change - BUT - in the meantime they need the tools to navigate the world the way it actually is. Our young women need to know how to assert themselves and our young men need to be taught that women are their equals. Both need to be taught to treat others with respect - and that's on us. That's our responsibility.

This is an incredibly complicated issue. I do think there are degrees of harassment. I don’t put Franken and Moore in the same boat of guilt. If more women come out about Franken’s inappropriate touching or worse he should resign. Another woman spoke out yesterday about him touching her inappropriately. He says he doesn’t remember. How many men do unconsciously touch women inappropriately but don’t even realize how offensive it is. For centuries men have always exerted their power over women. Even though in contemporary society boys were raised to be more respectful of women those lessons were contradicted by boys will be boys behavior they saw and experienced in high school, college, in office environments and maybe in their own homes. On some level women have enabled this behavior. Enabled by not speaking up or pushing back more forcibly in the moment. But there are legitimate and complicated reasons why it has been so difficult for women to assert themselves. It’s not just black and white. That’s what makes this issue so complicated to deal with.

What Rose did crossed the line. Putting his hand down a woman’s pants, groping her breasts and even taking a woman to bed with him without her permission is unacceptable behavior. It is outright wrong. And he has behaved this way with many women. And then in retaliation of some of them talking about it to a colleague he fired them. He inappropriately used his power to take advantage and in some incidences prey on women who in essence did not hold any power.

Donnamarie - Isn't it strange, though, how we're still framing the discussion in terms of what women need to do to change things? IMO it isn't women alone who can make the change, it's men, too. They're the ones on whom boys model their behavior. They're the ones who teach by example how to treat women. Why aren't we demanding that the decent men in our society (and there are many of them) step up and take action.

There are many aspects of our society that encourage the treatment of women as commodities - and we're complicit in some of them. I think a lot has to change before we get the respect we want.

Lizzy, what action should they take?

In theory, a woman should be able st say 'Stop' even when she's already in bed with a man. When you're in a relationship, your partner should understand when you're not comfortable enough to have sex (at least my husband does), but what if you're going to have a one-night-stand? I don't know how a man reacts when you've met in a bar, flirted with him, invited him to your home, both undressed and then suddenly say 'No!' You should be able to say so at each point, but how realistic is this?

I also read that many men aren't able to read a woman's body language, think they are interested in them or flirting with them, while in fact they are just polite. 

Lizzy, I like the idea of men teaching other men on how to treat women. George has, as far as I know, always treated women with respect, concentrates on them during a talk, stands up to welcome them etc.,  so he could be a good role model. On the other hand there are those we all know about who don't do so. Men and also boys already have the choice who's their role model, and they choose the guy from the music video who treats the girl badly - a girl who is nearly naked and behaves in an obscene way. So if men and boys take this behaviour as a role model, they'll treat their girlfriend and wife exactly the same way. Or their father who had beaten their mother. Or Trump who said that he's able to grab them by the ..., that they are bleeding from their whatever and other disrespectful things.
They choose the wrong role model, but are they really too stupid to see the difference? Or is it simply easier to say 'But President Trump said so as well'? I simply refuse to think that men are just driven by their instincts, not able to control their hormons...

The US government is going to end net neutrality, a fundamental principle of how the internet works.
Net neutrality is the idea that all internet traffic is treated the same. But the new ruling will allow internet service providers to block or slow access to specific websites, and allow them to charge for those limits to be lifted.
The Federal Communications Commission, under the direction of Donald Trump, has said that it will repeal a law that banned internet service providers from interfering with what people see on the internet and how easy it is to view. Chairman Arjit Pai, who was appointed by Mr Trump, said that the protections stopped internet companies from doing what they wanted and were an unnecessary restriction.
As such, it violates a principle that has been in place ever since the internet began: that no particular website or service can receive special treatment from the companies that power the web. Instead, service providers will be allowed to charge websites to load quicker, for instance, or force their users to pay extra if they want to access certain pages.

Those sorts of restrictions are what led many of the world's biggest internet companies to back net neutrality in a series of protests. Most recently, a whole host of websites – including Google, Netflix, Facebook and Reddit – went dark in protest at what they believe will happen to them if the rules are repealed.
Those actions were opposed by telecoms providers like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, all of whom supported the repeal of the law. The restrictions were hindering the development of a free market in internet connections and service, they claimed.
Many of those companies own their own services, as well as providing the internet connections themselves, and the rules keep them from using them to benefit each other.
Mr Trump has been opposed to the principle since 2014, believing Barack Obama's efforts to enshrine it in law were simple a "power grab". He has made a series of strange comments about the internet, including a commitment to "close it up" and talk to Bill Gates, as well as claiming that it needs to be "cut off".
The FCC's decision will now be almost certainly approved when it is voted on in December, and roll back a 2015 law that forced internet companies to be regulated like public utilities. It will include specific rules that stop states or cities from getting around the rule and instituting their own principles.
Mr Pai has sent round preliminary versions of his plans to the FCC members who will vote on them next month. He plans to distribute more details publicly on Wednesday.

World's biggest websites to stop working over net neutrality laws

"The FCC will no longer be in the business of micromanaging business models and preemptively prohibiting services and applications and products that could be pro-competitive," Pai said in an interview, adding that the Obama administration had sought to pick winners and losers and exercised "heavy-handed" regulation of the internet.
"We should simply set rules of the road that let companies of all kinds in every sector compete and let consumers decide who wins and loses," Pai added.
The net neutrality rules, aimed at giving consumers equal access to web content, also forbade broadband providers from charging consumers more for certain content, a practice called "paid prioritization."
Pai said state and local governments "need to be preempted" from imposing their own net neutrality rules because broadband internet service is "inherently an interstate service." The preemption is most likely to handcuff Democratic-governed states and localities that could have considered their own plans to protect consumers' equal access to internet content.
The FCC's planned action represents a victory for internet service providers including AT&T Inc, Comcast Corp and Verizon Communications Inc, which had urged the FCC to revoke the rules. The companies have said that repealing the could lead to billions of dollars in additional broadband investment and eliminate the possibility that a future presidential administration could regulate internet pricing.
In July, a group representing major technology firms including Google parent Alphabet Inc and Facebook Inc had urged Pai to drop plans to rescind the rules.
At the December meeting, the FCC will vote on Pai's proposal to require internet service providers to disclose whether they allow blocking or slowing down of consumer web access or permit so-called internet fast lanes to facilitate paid prioritization. Such disclosure will make it easier for another agency, the Federal Trade Commission, to act against internet service providers that fail to disclose such conduct to consumers, Pai said.
The FCC under Obama regulated internet service providers like public utilities under a section of federal law that gave the agency sweeping oversight over the conduct of these companies.
A federal appeals court last year upheld the legality of the net neutrality regulations, which were challenged in a lawsuit led by a telecommunications industry trade association.
The FCC's repeal is certain to draw a legal challenge from advocates of net neutrality. Many Democrats and some internet firms argue that without the rules, internet providers will threaten the openness of the internet.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a Democrat, wrote on Twitter, "The internet is the public square of the 21st century. Unless we all speak out against the @FCC's efforts to gut #netneutrality, the free and open internet we know today could be gone for good."
The planned repeal represents the latest example of a legacy achievement of Obama being erased since Trump, a businessman-turned-politician, took office in January. Trump has abandoned international trade deals, the landmark Paris climate accord and environmental protections, taken aim at the Iran nuclear accord and closer relations with Cuba, and sought repeal Obama's signature healthcare law.
The new order will reclassify internet providers as "information services" rather than a "telecommunication service," which means the FCC has significantly less authority to oversee the web. The FCC granted initial approval to Pai's plan in May, but had left open many key questions including whether to retain any legal requirements limiting internet providers conduct.
Pai, who has moved quickly to undo numerous regulatory actions since taking over as chairman, is mounting a broad deregulatory agenda and has pledged to take a "weed whacker" to unneeded regulations. Pai said he had not shared his plans on the rollback with the White House in advance or been directed to undo the order by White House officials.
Pai said the FCC is adopting a "market-based deregulatory approach." The FCC also will vote to eliminate the "internet conduct standard," which gives the FCC far-reaching discretion to prohibit any internet service provider practice that it believes violates a long list of factors and sought to address future discriminatory conduct.
Pai said his goal is to use a "light-touch market-based" regulatory approach, arguing the internet operated well before the rules were adopted in 2015. The internet "is the greatest free market innovation in history," Pai said, adding that government regulations could hinder that.

Who had Trump’s ear to try to repeal this law ... or is it just another attempt by Trump to erase every action Obama took during his presidency? I can’t imagine Trump has a strong stance on this issue. What has he done to investigate and improve our tech systems to avoid another cyber attack, especially after the Russian hacking? That to me seems far more relevant and important at this time.

Just to get back to the sexual assault issue I don’t think it’s the responsibility of women to get men to treat them with respect. Everyone deserves respect but we know that some men take advantage of women who they perceive as powerless. If women have been complicit it’s not because they want to be. They don’t feel that they will be believed when something happens to them. Over years and years of misbehavior men have gotten away with sexist comments, unwanted flirting and inappropriate touching. Decades of this behavior have on some level just been accepted by women as a ‘men will be men’ mentality. When it comes to worse behavior women have generally not had the kind of power or money that would enable them to stand up to these harassers. Men in important positions have always had the power in our society. Even though women have made strides in legally attaining equal rights and have made a bit of headway in the corporate world there are still huge discrepancies. It’s not enough that some famous men are being called out now for inappropriate behavior with women .... it won’t bring about significant change to this huge problem. I have a feeling that this issue will eventually get drowned out by other newsworthy events taking its place. Until many more women reach some kind of parity and power in the workplace I think this will continue to be a problem. When many more women have equal standing with men that’s when we may start to see a real change take place. It doesn’t solve every sexual harassment scenario but it may make a dent.

Annemarie - At the very least men can talk with their sons about how to treat all people - not just women - with respect. Talk to them about whether the attitudes and behaviors they see in videos and movies belong in real life. Even many of the most obnoxious "artists" don't really behave the way they do in their videos. The girls in the videos are getting paid to act like they do (IMO their mothers need to talk to them about self respect.). Ask your sons how the girls they know would react if talked to or treated like that. How would your son feel if the roles were reversed? How would he feel if the girl was his sister or mother?

Carolhathaway - Re: your one-night-stand scenario - It isn't realistic to say "No" when you're in bed with a man you've been flirting with all night and, by taking him to your bed, led to believe sex would follow. You do, of course have the right to stop things at any point but you also share the responsibility for whatever happens nest.

Charlie Rose is out at CBS, with the network revealing that they have terminated the host's contract less than 24 hours after multiple women accused him of making unwanted sexual advances.
The news was revealed in an interview memo sent to staffers by CBS News president David Rhodes, who stated that 'there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace.'
Rhodes, who is being widely applauded for his network's swift and frank response to the allegations against Rose, also said: 'I've also heard that things used to be different. And no one can change the past.
'But what may once have been accepted should not ever have been acceptable.' 
Rhodes went on to explain the reason behind the network's decision.
'CBS News has reported on extraordinary revelations at other media companies this year and last,' said Rhodes. 
'Our credibility in that reporting requires credibility managing basic standards of behavior. That is why we have taken these actions.'
Rose was initially suspended from the network yesterday when the Washington Post published the accounts of eight women who claim they were sexually harassed or assaulted by the journalist. That was followed by additional allegations from five other women.  
He joined CBS in 2012, hosting CBS This Morning and appearing on 60 Minutes while also occasionally guest hosting the CBS Evening News. 
Rose had signed a lengthy contract extension in 2015 with the network. 
PBS quickly followed suit, stating: 'In light of yesterday’s revelations, PBS has terminated its relationship with Charlie Rose and cancelled distribution of his programs.'
The network, which has aired Rose's show since 1991, also noted: 'PBS expects all the producers we work with to provide a workplace where people feel safe and are treated with dignity and respect.'

A cameraman caught Rose returning to his apartment Monday night, after he had been suspended. 
When the cameraman asked if Rose wanted to say anything to his accusers, Rose says 'What?' and starts laughing.
'You want to say anything to the accusers - the people who are accusing you of all these wrongdoings?' the man asks.
It's not wrongdoings.

He made that comment just hours after his apology in response to the allegations ran in the Post, and when writer Amy Brittain inquired about the disparate tone struck by Rose his publicist said: 'Charlie Rose sticks by his statement Amy. No comment on the below.'
News of these firings likely brings to an end the storied career of one of the most acclaimed newsman of his generation, with Rose picking up a Peabody in 2013 and the Walter Cronkite Excellence in Journalism Award two years later in 2015. He also won 




On Tuesday morning, a shocked Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell addressed the sudden departure of their co-host on CBS This Morning.
At the end of their news story on the accusations, the two women took a moment to address their viewers, relaying their conflicted feelings about the disturbing revelations.
King said she's 'still reeling' and barely slept last night. After hearing about the allegations, she sought comfort by talking to her close friend Oprah Winfrey.
'I really am still reeling. I got an hour and 42 minutes of sleep last night, both my son and my daughter called me. Oprah called me and said, are you okay? I am not okay.
'After reading that article in the post, it was deeply disturbing, troubling and painful for me to read,' King said. 
I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken.

Both she and O'Donnell said it was important to believe the women who have come forward to accuse Rose, and hope it encourages other victims to come forward. 
'Charlie does not get a pass here,' King said. '...He doesn't get a pass because I can't stop thinking about the anguish of these women, what happened to their dignity, what happened to their bodies, what happened maybe to even their careers. I can't stop thinking about that and the pain that they're going through.
She added: 'The women who have not spoken up because they're afraid...I'm hoping now they will take the step to speak up too. This becomes a moment of truth.'
'It takes a lot of courage for these women to come forward and I think that they should continue to do something. We hope they will continue to speak up,' O'Donnell said. 

While they have a personal friendship with Rose, both women said they are firmly behind the victims.

O'Donnell said that the global sexual harassment scandals demand 'a frank and honest assessment about where we stand'.   
'Let me be very clear: there is no excuse for this alleged behavior. It is systematic and pervasive and I've been doing a lot of listening and I'm going to continue to do that.
'This I know is true - women cannot achieve equality in the workplace or in society until there is a reckoning and a taking of responsibility.
'I'm really proud to work at CBS News. There are so many incredible people here especially on this show. All of you here.
'This will be investigated. This has to end. This behavior is wrong. Period.'

King did admit that she felt for Rose as a longtime friend and collaborator.
'I've enjoyed a friendship and a partnership with Charlie for the past five years. I've held him in such high regard and I'm really struggling because how do you - what do you say when someone that you deeply care about has done something that is so horrible? How do you wrap your brain around that? I'm really grappling with that,' King said.  
She added: 'I'm still trying to sort it out because this is not the man I know, but I'm also clearly on the side of the women who have been very hurt and very damaged by this.'

King has not talked to Rose yet, but said she intends to do so some time today.

Among the claims being made by the women are that Rose would grope their breasts, buttocks and genitals without their consent, make lewd telephone calls, and walk around naked in their presence without warning.
The women who have come forward with these claims about Rose, 75, were all between the ages of 21 and 37 at the time of the alleged misconduct and working for the legendary television host.
Two former employees said that the young female assistants and producers Rose would constantly surround himself with were known as 'Charlie's Angels.'
In a lengthy statement in response to the expose, Rose did not deny all of the allegations being made by the women but said that he did not believe all of his accusers were 'accurate' in heir description of his offenses.
'It is essential that these women know I hear them and that I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior. I am greatly embarrassed,' stated Rose. 
'I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken.'
The backlash was swift for Rose, with PBS and Bloomberg announcing they would no longer air his eponymous talk show within an hour of the Post publishing their story on Monday and CBS suspending the host. 
CBS also ran a segment on the allegations just three minutes into the CBS Evening News broadcast on Monday.

Following the publication of the Post article, two additional women came forward in an interview with The New York Times, and Business Insiderpublished an interview with three more former interns. This brings the total number of accusers to thirteen.
The Post also says more than a dozen women have contacted them after their original story with similar claims. 

Rose, whose only marriage ended in divorce back in 1980, has been in an on-and-off relationship for the past 25 years with Amanda Burden, 73, who is a Principal at Bloomberg Associates.
All of the alleged incidents described by the woman in the Post story occurred while Rose was with Burden, who is the stepdaughter of CBS founder William Paley.
Rose has no children. 
Three of the women who came forward agreed to use their names while the other five accusers who spoke on the record asked that their identities not be revealed for fear of possible repercussions.

Kyle Godfrey-Ryan was one of the three who agreed to let the Post use her name as she detailed her time working as Rose's assistant a decade ago in New York City.
She claims that Rose walked around naked in front of her at least a dozen times while the two were working from his home.
Godfrey-Ryan also alleged that Rose would call her late at night or early in the morning to describe his fantasies of seeing her swim naked in his pool.
She claimed that Rose said he wanted to watch as she disrobed by the pool at his Bellport estate and swam naked in the moonlight.
Her own sex life was also a topic Rose wanted to know about claims Godfrey-Ryan, claiming he would call late at night or early in the morning, asking: 'Who’s next to you? What do you do? Is he touching you?'
Godfrey-Ryan said she just acted as though the call and questions were not happening, a tactic she also employed when it came to Rose's alleged groping of her at work.
Those incidents usually occurred after he had very publicly berated the young female employee.
'It would usually entail some version of him also touching me,' Godfrey-Ryan said of her boss' apology. 
Though many came before me, some women were attacked violently and repeatedly after the time I worked there. These stories helped me reframe my perspective. I felt that by withholding my identity, I was de-legitimatizing the experiences of these other women. I couldn’t be complicit in what silence meant for them, so I allowed my name to run with the story.

She was later fired by Rose she claims, when he learned that she had shared details of his behavior with a friend. 
That move came shortly after Godfrey-Ryan said she approached Rose's longtime producer Yvette Vega about the calls, who made her feel like she was being a 'dramatic little girl.'
'That’s just Charlie being Charlie,' was Vega's response, according to Godfrey-Ryan. 
Godfrey-Ryan had then hoped her friend could help by speaking to Rose, but that was not the case.
'He took me out to lunch and told me how embarrassed he was, how he didn’t treat me like that,' she said of Rose's response to her sharing the allegations of sexual misconduct. 
'It was really about how I got it wrong, and, obviously, I couldn’t work there anymore.'
She ultimately went back to school, saying her time on  the show ruined journalism for her and that she still gets upset when she see Rose on the air. 
Godfrey later shared the story on her Facebook page while writing about her decision to come forward.
'I do not revisit this time in my life often and I felt no need to take anyone down. I am also in a moment of incredible highs in my professional life and feel that I am fully living out my purpose; the last thing I want or need is to attach my name to a sexual assault story,' wrote Godfrey. 
'Then, late last week I was read excerpts of transcripts from the other women. Though many came before me, some women were attacked violently and repeatedly after the time I worked there. These stories helped me reframe my perspective.'
Godfrey continued: 'I felt that by withholding my identity, I was de-legitimatizing the experiences of these other women. I couldn’t be complicit in what silence meant for them, so I allowed my name to run with the story.'

Unwanted advance: Megan Crydt (above) worked as a coordinator after graduating from Harvard, and said Rose grabbed her thigh during a car ride soon after she started
It was around the time that Godfrey-Ryan was working for Rose that Harvard graduate Megan Crydt joined the team as a coordinator, working from 2005 to 2006 with Rose.
She said she found herself at the receiving end of an unwanted sexual advance while riding with Rose in his Mini Cooper, claiming that the host put his hand on her thigh as he was driving through the city.
Her boyfriend confirmed the story, saying Crydt had told him at the time.
'I don’t think I said anything,' said Crydt. 
'I tensed up. I didn’t move his hand off, but I pulled my legs to the other side of the car. I tried not to get in a car with him ever again. I think he was testing me out.' 
Two former interns are among the accusers who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
One, who worked for Rose in the early 90s, said she was summoned to work the desk at his New York home, where he would shower and use the bathroom with the door open.
She claims that at one point he turned on the shower and immediately began calling her name.
When she refused to respond he suddenly appeared standing over her in the nude, wearing nothing but a towel, she claims.
An intern working for Rose 10 years later claimed that he groped her breasts while also trying to get her to spend the night at his Bellport home on Long Island.

She claims to have refused that offer multiple times.
Her now-husband backed up these allegations by stating he had been told about the incidents at the time when the two were dating.
This conduct continued for so long, despite the staff numbering approximately 15 people ever since the show began in 1991, because of Rose's pull, said that intern.
'Everybody is terrified of him,' she explained. 
'He creates this environment of constant fear. And then he’ll shine a spotlight on you and make you feel amazing.'

The most recent encounter occurred in 2010 at the Bellport home of Rose.
A woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she had agreed to meet him there in 2010 to discuss a job.
That interview quickly took a turn however, with the woman claiming that Rose appeared in 'an untethered robe' soon after she arrived and tried to stick his hand down the front of her pants. 
She began meeting with Rose in 2009 about a possible job, noting that these always seemed to occur in unconventional settings like a dinner with his friends and once a weekend lunch. 
Then, in June 2010, she received an email asking her to come to his Bellport home for the weekend.
'As I mentioned, I’m going to my place on long island tonight to write... and then coming back tomorrow for a dinner. This is to invite to visit,' wrote Rose.
'You have your own wing of the house, or even a guesthouse, It’s on the water, plus Olympic pool, tennis court, plenty of movies and books and sailing and I run on the beach at sunrise and sunset.'
He later noted: 'This has no influence on our dialogue about work projects.'
She agreed to the meeting and soon found herself arriving at the home after midnight with Rose, who she seemed to think might be slightly inebriated.
Rose gave the woman a tour of the property she claims and then went to change after getting his pant leg wet in the pool. 
He came out in a robe that he left untied and yelled at her when she began to speak about abuse of power, claims the potential employee.
Rose then allegedly tried to put his hand down her pants.
'By the time he touched me the first time, he was already very angry,' said the woman. 
'I was scared, and I was also kind of frozen.'
She said that she soon found herself in his bed but does not remember getting there, and alleged he again tried to stick his hand down her pants while asking: 'Baby, oh baby, why are you crying?'
Once he fell asleep she made her escape and the next day Rose acted as if nothing had happened the previous night.
He also told her she did not get the position when she emailed him that week. 
'The whole thing was really the most humiliating and most degrading experience I’ve ever had,' said the woman.

Reah Bravo was also an intern when she worked for Rose back in 2007, with the 29-year-old student at Columbia in graduate school for international relations at the time.
She was broke at the time and while the internship with Charlie Rose Inc was unpaid, it had long been a dream of hers to work for the show, she told the Post.
Fate seemed to be smiling upon her however when she received an email from Rose one day offering to pay her to do some work at his Bellport home.
'Here is the deal: I’ll pay you $2,500 for the week plus all expenses for food, movies etc.,' wrote Rose. 
'You will be there from Monday August 13-Friday afternoon, August 17. Your primary responsibilities are to organize and catalogue all my books and tapes and files... It will help me a lot, be fun for you, and you will have a car all the time for whatever you need to do.'
Things were going fine until the night Rose returned to the house drunk and asked Bravo to have a glass of wine with him and walk out to his dock.
She described what happened next as 'reckless' and reflective of her boss' 'poor judgment,' claiming he came up behind her and put wrapped his arms around the young woman, who was almost 50 years his junior. 
 It has taken 10 years and a fierce moment of cultural reckoning for me to understand these moments for what they were. He was a sexual predator, and I was his victim.

Bravo did not think of him as a predator at that time though, claiming a tearful speech about how lonely he was manged to impact her judgment despite the fact that she found the display unconvincing at the time.
On her next trip to Bellport she caught a glimpse of Rose naked as he took an outdoor shower, claiming she quickly averted her eyes. 
Rose later asked if she had seen him in the shower, and when she said she had not seemed disappointed, according to Bravo. 
There were more trips to Bellport and later a trip to Aspen, during which time she wrote a letter to Vega.
'On a personal note, I know working for Charlie requires one to embrace his uniqueness and develop a professional relationship that can account for it,' wrote Vega.
'It’s taken a couple straight forward conversations between the two of us, but I feel I’m in a better place than previously. And that’s not to say that I was previously in a really bad place!' 
Vega responded by assuring her that she had seen and heard everything possible over the years working with Rose and that anything she divulged to her would be in 'confidence.' 
Bravo began working more and more with Rose, and said that he would grope her in cars and grabbed her face in a way that forced her to look at him as he spoke. 
The most alarming incident occurred in 2008 during a trip on private plane, claims Bravo, who said that shortly after Rose asked her to put in a DVD on Algeria for the two to watch, he got up and pressed his body on hers.
'I felt at a loss. I mean, what am I going to do? We were how many feet up in the air?' she said of having her boss on top of her, adding that she felt lucky the two were at least fully clothed at the time.
After the 'animalistic' move Bravo said she felt 'immense shame' for not trying to fight him off.
When she finally decided to leave later that year for a job offering her three times the salary that she was then working as an associate producer for Rose, he took her to dinner at the Spotted Pig and offered her a job in DC.
He also said she could stay at his Georgetown residence.
Bravo declined the offer, and looking back on the incident noted: 'I would never want to live someplace where he had keys.'
She also said that all these years later she can see that Rose had a very clear pattern in how he tired to lure in young women.
'He most definitely said, on numerous occasions, "I’ve never forced you to do something you didn’t want to do,"' said Bravo. 
'He would say this forcefully and wait for my confirmation after he said this. I remember once wondering if I was being recorded.'

Vega's presence seemed reassuring, according to the women, two of whom said they spoke with the producer about his alleged misconduct.
'I should have stood up for them,' said Vega. 'I failed. It is crushing. I deeply regret not helping them.'
Her inaction is now costing her as well, with PBS saying in a statement: 'PBS was shocked to learn today of these deeply disturbing allegations. We are immediately suspending distribution of Charlie Rose.'
Bloomberg released a statement as well, saying: 'We are deeply disturbed to learn of these allegations and are immediately suspending the show from airing on Bloomberg TV.'

That statement was quickly backed up, with the channel airing Daybreak Asia in the 6pm slot instead of Charlie Rose just minutes later on Monday.
PBS will be airing the Antiques Roadshow in place of Charlie Rose in the 11pm hour while the claims being made against the host are investigated. 
The women who the Post spoke with all worked for Rose, and none were employed by PBS, CBS and Bloomberg at the time.
Those three companies all said that they had no records showing Rose had ever been accused of sexually harassing or assaulting a fellow employee. 
'The wave of sexual abuse allegations we've been reporting from Hollywood to Washington has now touched CBS News,' said Anthony Mason on CBS Evening News.
He went on to say that Rose had been suspended before tossing to a report on the allegations from correspondent Jim Axelrod.  
'The women who spoke with the Post worked for Charlie Rose inc., not CBS or PBS, where his interview air, or Bloomberg, where it's taped and rebroadcast,' explained Axelrod at one point, before listing off the allegations. 

He also shared the official statement from CBS News, which read: 'Charlie Rose is suspended immediately while we look into this matter. These allegations are extremely disturbing and we take them seriously.'
NBC Nightly News With Lester Holt led with the allegations against Rose on Monday in a segment that recapped the Post story, with the network also managing to confirm the accounts two of the women gave the Post in the 90 minutes between the publication of the story and the start of the program.
ABC World News Tonight With David Muir led with another sexual misconduct story in the news on Monday, choosing to start of the show with an update of the allegations being made against Alabama Senate hopeful Roy Moore before reporting on the claims being made about Rose.
Both NBC and ABC also focused on the Rose's longtime producer Yvette Vega in their coverage.
'Several of the accusers say they told Yvette Vega, Rose's long-time executive producer, about their experiences,' noted Linsey Davis on World News.
ABC made that claim despite the Post story stating very clearly that only two of the eight women they had interviewed said that they had reported 'Rose’s inappropriate sexual behavior' to the producer.
That detail also did not stop NBC from also reporting of that 'several of the women complained to Rose's executive producer Yvette Vega.'

Amy Brittain, who reported the story for the Post alongside Irin Carmon, took to Twitter shortly after the story was published to share her contact information.
'Sadly, my inbox is already flooded with women who have had similar, disturbing encounters with Charlie Rose,' wrote Brittain.
'Please reach out if you have any information to share. Our reporting continues.'
Carmon started looking into the story back in 2010 when she first heard rumors about Rose's alleged misconduct while writing for Jezebel.
She noted on Tuesday that none of the men who were interviewed for the piece were willing to go on the record. 
Two additional women came forward hours after she published her story Monday in an interview with The New York Times, saying that Rose had made unwanted advances towards them in the past.
The anonymous accusers both alleged that the host had tried to kiss them, though no years were given or additional information to support those claims or establish their relationship with Rose at the time.

And while he's on good behavior at the office he loosens up in the Long Island village where he has a vacation home. It was also unclear if these women had worked for Rose or been interviewing for a job like the women who spoke with the Post.
The Times also spoke to some of the women who were previously interviewed by the Post, including the potential employee who went to Rose's Bellwort estate back in 2010 and ended up in his bed.
'Why didn’t I hit him? Why didn’t I run inside? I was completely racked with guilt and self-hatred,' she said in her interview with the Times.  
Business Insider also published their own investigation into Rose on Monday, which included interviews with three former interns.
One, who worked on the program in 2005, alleged that Rose had inappropriately touched her leg while her drove to her dorm room in the city to drop her off one night.
When she later asked for career advice, she claims Rose invited her to his hotel room.
The other two interns, who worked for Rose in 2008 and 2010, shared stories of being asked to meet Rose at his townhouse in Manhattan and having the septuagenarian answer the door in his bath robe.
All three women said they made the decision not to come forward for fear of losing future employment in the industry, which is why they spoke anonymously to Business Insider.
The intern who worked for Rose back in 2005 noted that she grew up watching the show and saw the job as a great opportunity.
'It looks great on the resume,' she said, adding that Rose is 'revered in the industry and really respected.' 
These reports come ten years after Rose's lawyer David Boies, who also represented Harvey Weinstein, threatened to sue Radar Magazine for defamation over a 2007 article about the host.

Radar refused to print a retraction and Boies never followed through with his lawsuit.

The New York Times revealed at the time that Rose dismissed his concern while explaining why he even agreed to host the dinner in the first place.

Rose will not be replaced on CBS This Morning, and the network already got a head start on the fallout by keeping him off the air on Monday, hours before the story broke.
'It has taken 10 years and a fierce moment of cultural reckoning for me to understand these moments for what they were,' Bravo told The Post.

Russia slammed President Donald Trump on Thursday for his 'PR move' to put North Korea on America's terror blacklist.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called Trump's move to place North Korea on the list of state sponsors of terrorism 'another scaremongering act and PR move' that would not reduce tensions on the ground.
'The answer to the question whether such actions help in lessening the tensions is clear: no, they do not,' Zakharova told the Agence France Press. 
According to Zakharova, the decision could cause the situation on the peninsula to escalate into a global 'catastrophe'.  
North Korea condemned its US terror listing as a 'serious provocation' on Wednesday, warning that sanctions would never force it to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

'These sorts of actions push the situation (around North Korea) to the extreme, this can end with a big catastrophe not only of a regional but also of global scale,' Zakharova told journalists in Moscow.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will discuss the North Korea crisis with his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono during his visit to Russia on Friday, Zakharova said.
'They will concentrate on bilateral relations but the international situation will be discussed, including the situation in the Korean peninsula as well as the Syrian question,' Zakharova said.
Trump put North Korea back on a list of state sponsors of terrorism on Monday, a designation that allows the US to impose more sanctions and risks inflaming tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and missile programs.
The Republican president, who has traded personal insults with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un but has not ruled out talks, said the Treasury Department will announce additional sanctions against North Korea on Tuesday.

The designation came a week after Trump returned from a 12-day, five-nation trip to Asia in which he made containing North Korea's nuclear ambitions a centerpiece of his discussions.

South Korea's spy agency said on Monday the North may conduct additional missile tests this year to improve its long-range missile technology and ramp up the threat against the United States.
Experts say the designation will be largely symbolic as North Korea is already heavily sanctioned by the US, a reality that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson seemed to acknowledged while saying it would help dissuade third parties from supporting Pyongyang.
'The practical effects may be limited but hopefully we're closing off a few loopholes with this,' he told reporters.
The United States has designated only three other countries - Iran, Sudan and Syria - as state sponsors of terrorism.
Some experts think North Korea does not meet the criteria for the designation, which requires evidence that a state has 'repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism.'
In his remarks, Trump remembered Otto Warmbier, the college student from Ohio who died in June shortly after his return from North Korea, where he was held for more than a year.
His death caused outrage in the US and further inflamed tensions with Pyongyang.

But the administration of former President George W. Bush, a Republican, removed Pyongyang in 2008 in exchange for progress in denuclearization talks.
Some members of Congress had been pushing for years for North Korea to be put back on the list, but others questioned whether the reclusive regime met the criteria of actively sponsoring international terrorism.
US Representative Ed Royce, the Republican chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, called the decision 'an important step in our efforts to apply maximum diplomatic and financial pressure on Kim Jong Un'.
Democratic Senator Edward Markey said the designation 'ratchets up the rhetoric' but does nothing to hold North Korea accountable for its weapons program.
The designation could prove counterproductive, said Harry Kazianis, director of defense studies at the conservative Center for the National Interest.
'Sadly, this action by the Trump administration just further cements a dangerous game of escalatory brinkmanship where neither side is giving the other any off-ramp,' he said.

President Donald Trump has once again hit out at his broadcasting rival CNN in a tweet late Saturday afternoon. 
The 71-year-old wrote that CNN is doing a terrible job of representing the United States to the world - claiming that Fox News really has Americans' best interests at heart. 
'@FoxNews is MUCH more important in the United States than CNN, but outside of the U.S., CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly,' Trump furiously wrote on Twitter. 
'The outside world does not see the truth from them!' 
It's not clear why the president chose to capitalize the words he did.
Clearly fed up by Trump's antics, CNN International quickly hit back at him in a tweet of its own.
'It's not CNN's job to represent the U.S to the world. That's yours. Our job is to report the news. #FactsFirst,' the CNN PR team tweeted.

This tweet is his latest attack on the cable network, which he branded earlier this year as 'fake news' because he doesn't agree with how it is covering his administration.

Today's jab also comes amid tensions over a potential merger between AT&T and Time Warner - which the president starkly opposes.
The Justice Department allegedly told AT&T that the $85billion merger would only be approved if it sells off CNN's parent company or DirecTV. AT&T denied that it offered to do so.

On Monday the department sued AT&T to block the merger with the justification that it will hurt competition and consumers. 
Because of Trump's obvious feelings about CNN, the department has drawn wide-ranging criticism for the move - believed by some to be biased by the president's opinions. 
On Tuesday, Trump made a statement that the merger would be bad for the US. 
'Personally, I've always felt that that was a deal that's not good for the country,' he said.

Susan Sarandon has announced that she's glad Hillary Clinton lost the election because she's 'very dangerous' and America would be 'at war.'
The outspoken actress faced a furious backlash from the left who accused her of allowing Donald Trump to win because she'd refused to vote for Clinton in the US election.
She had instead chosen to back independent Jill Stein, after Bernie Sanders lost in the Democratic primary. 
But the 71-year-old says she has no regrets.

'I did think she was very, very dangerous,' Sarandon told the Guardian of Clinton. 'We would still be fracking, we would be at war [if she was president]. It wouldn't be much smoother. Look what happened under Obama that we didn't notice.'
She said that while former president Barack Obama had 'really hard about healthcare' and 'it was very important to have a black family in the White House', she says he deported even more people than Trump - he just did it 'sneakily.'
Sarandon hasn't always been such a staunch Clinton opponent. In 2001, she even backed her for the Senate and posed with the former First Lady during her run.



But that all changed when Clinton voted for the war in Iraq.
Since then Sarandon has refused to support the former Secretary of State - even if that meant alienating herself from her fellow liberals.

She said that when she recently took a stand on Dreamers, a program to allow children who entered the US illegally to gain citizenship, after Trump threatened to revoke it. But when she showed her support, she had another wave of abuse from the left blaming her for not voting for Clinton. 
'How dare you! You who are responsible for this!' she said the messages read.
However, Sarandon appears to take it all in her stride.
She says it's 'flattering' that some assume her voice held so much sway over the population but she didn't find the attacks upsetting. And her friends have stood by her through it all.
'It's upsetting to me more from the point of view of thinking they haven't learned. I don't need to be vindicated.'
The actress insists her vote for Stein wasn't a 'protest vote' but she'd told people at the time, 'Get your information, I'm going to vote for change, because I was hoping that Stein was going to get whatever percentage she needed – but I knew she wasn't going to make the difference in the election.'

Thankfully, Sarandon says she was never put in a situation where 'no' wasn't enough.
She said that she had never been cornered, battered or forced against her will.  
'It was an invitation: 'Yeah, why don't you spend the night now that you're here in the middle of nowhere on location?' And I said: 'No, I gotta get back to my room.' But I didn't feel super offended, because it wasn't a thing that became super difficult.'
But she has found herself rejected for roles or told she wasn't 'sexual enough' after they realized she was married.
Today, she believed that imbalance of power between the sexes is being corrected, thanks to the female directors and producers breaking through to make their own movies. But it's slow going.

A proof that not all of Hollywood is liberal and supports Hillary. But did Trump stop fracking? He's the one who changed the EPA policy drastically, closed National Parks in order to help to destroy their resources and opened inefficient coal mines. Did he stop a single war? No, in fact he opened new battlefields.

We dob't knoe how Hillary had reacted if she'd been elected, and we'll never know. We just know what she did as Secretary of Defense, and it's always easy to judge in retroperspective.

The personnel attacks vs Susan Sarandan are horrible and won't change a single thing. I'd like to know what she'll say after the end of Trump's presidency...

AMEN! I have lost all respect for Susan Sarandon. Every time she speaks about politics she sounds more and more like a petulant child. Her candidate didn't win. So? He didn't get the support of a party to which he didn't belong and which had a viable candidate of its own. So? Grow up! Once he lost the Democratic nomination his supporters (if they rally were Democrats) should have swung their support to the party's candidate - Hillary Clinton. They didn't. Instead they went home and bitched into their craft beer. IMO they're as responsible as the Russians for the election of Drumpf.

I know that Susan Sarandon is not liberal - in Europe you would probably describe her political point of view as from the left wing from the social democrats, we do have a socialistic party who speaks about dispossession etc, so she's far from that.

I just wanted to point out that not all of Hollywood is liberal, there are also Trump supporters like Jon Voight or Clint Eastwood - or, on the other side people like Susan Sarandon.

I think Sarandon has manipulated the facts because she is a sore loser. Clinton was for heavily regulating fracking. She did support fracking in other countries as a way to get them away from “dirty” forms of energy. Bernie was totally against fracking. As with many issues Clinton tried to hold the middle of the left’s point of view. Unfortunately, Bernie was unrealistic in his far left, socialist stance and so many of his supporters totally bought into it. I don’t know what the heck Sarandon is talking about when suggesting Clinton would have started a war. I think she comes across as a self righteous socialist letting her ego get in the way of what ultimately is good for our country.

The two top Democrats in Congress abruptly canceled a planned White House meeting with Donald Trump on Tuesday in response to the president's angry tweet expressing pessimism about their willingness to cut a deal that would keep the government running.
Trump threw shade at Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi hours earlier, calling them tax-hikers who are 'weak' on crime and favor the 'unchecked' admission of illegal immigrants into the United States.
And he wrote that he doesn't 'see a deal' in the making.
Pelosi and Schumer effectively cut the president out of the conversation late on Tuesday morning, saying in a joint statement that '[g]iven that the President doesn’t see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead.'

'Rather than going to the White House for a show meeting that won’t result in an agreement, we’ve asked Leader McConnell and Speaker Ryan to meet this afternoon. The White House told reporters late on Monday that Trump would meet with congressional leadership at 3:00 p.m. The administration wouldn't immediately say whether Republicans will still attend.
Trump is also scheduled to speak with the Republican Senate Caucus at lunchtime. 
Republicans have unified control of government, but leaders may need to rely on some Democratic votes to get a funding resolution passed.
Some Democrats are demanding a fix to help DREAMers who came to the U.S. illegally as immigrant children. The president rescinded their status but set a six-month deadline that ends in March to find a solution.
'Meeting with "Chuck and Nancy" today about keeping government open and working,' Trump tweeted. 'Problem is they want illegal immigrants flooding into our Country unchecked, are weak on Crime and want to substantially RAISE Taxes. I don’t see a deal!'

Trump may need help from 'Chuck and Nancy,' as he calls them, to bring a spending bill across the finish line and avoid a government shutdown for which Republicans would likely catch most of the blame  
Trump used a similar attack on Doug Jones, the Alabama Senate candidate who is a former prosecutor and who helped put away two Ku Klux Klansmen who were charged with blowing up a Birmingham Baptist church in 1963.

Typically in recent years, even as government funding deadlines approach, presidents reassure financial markets and investors that the U.S. government will ultimately remain open and running. 
The president may be trying to use the threat of a shutdown to try to gain negotiating leverage, although usually it is a minority party seeking concessions from the White House who is able to threaten to hold up government funding, rather than the head of the government.
Neither Pelosi nor Schumer are calling for tax hikes, though Democrats are resisting the $1.4 trillion tax cut that Trump called 'tremendous' on Monday. 
Republican leaders trying to reach majority support for their tax cut must contend with another conservative who is raising objections, after Montana Sen. Steve Daines raised concerns about how it would affect 'Main Street.'
With just a 52 seat majority, they can only afford three defections from their ranks.
Trump heads to the Capitol Tuesday afternoon to meet with the Republican conference about the tax cut, which could come to the floor for a vote as soon as Thursday. 
One Republican senator, Ron Johnson of Ohio, has already said he is a 'no' on the bill because of the way it advantages corporations over so-called 'pass-throughs,' business who file as individuals and miss off on some of the savings in the bill.

'Sen. Daines has concerns with how the tax bill looks at main street versus large corporations,' an aide to the senator said, The Hill reported. 'The Senator wants changes to the tax cut bill that ensure main street businesses are not put at a competitive disadvantage against large corporations.'
Daines, a Budget Committee member, linked his support to the issue. 'Before I can support this bill, this improvement needs to be made.'
A new Congressional Budget Office score estimates that "(t)he number of people with health insurance would decrease by 4 million in 2019 and 13 million in 2027' under the bill due to its removal of an Obamacare individual mandate.
That provision has drawn criticism from Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, although it could get removed if needed to lock down enough votes. 
Trump hailed the bill as 'a tremendous tax cut' and 'the biggest tax reduction in the history of our country' on Monday. 
'I think we're going to have great receptivity. We've had great spirit,' the president said. 
'And I can tell you, the Republican senators who are up, if we win we are going to get some Democratic senators who are joining us. If we don't win they wont be joining us,' he predicted.[/size]

Carol, I just don’t know how we deal with three more years of this. Reading and watching the news every day is hard and at times painful. I’m hoping against hope that somehow Special Counsel Mueller can uncover enough incriminating evidence and bring charges against Trump which might force him to resign. But realistically I don’t see it happening. For now we are stuck with this totally incompetent, unfit, immoral, and dangerous bigot. All the while he and his puppets are doing great harm to our government institutions.

Families of Navajo war veterans decried comments the president made during an event when he called a senator 'Pocahontas' while he was supposed to be honoring them for their service during World War II.
The tribute to aging vets, called 'code talkers,' who helped keep allied operations secret during World War II, was marred by Trump who used the press time Monday to slam his rival - Senator Elizabeth Warren - calling her Pocahontas.
'It was uncalled for,' said Marty Thompson, whose great uncle was a Navajo code talker. 
'He can say what he wants when he's out doing his presidential business among his people, but when it comes to honoring veterans or any kind of people, he needs to grow up and quit saying things like that,' Thompson added to CBS News.

Trump has repeatedly used the sobriquet 'Pocahontas' to deride Warren, who asserts that her mother's ancestors were members of the Cherokee and Delaware tribes, based on 'family lore.' 
During the event in the Oval Office Monday, speaking to the veterans, Trump said 'You were here long before any of us were here.' 
'Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas,' he continued, resurrecting his favored nickname for the outspoken senator whose Native American ancestry has been called into question by US conservatives.
Lupita Holiday, daughter of a code talker from St. Geroge, Utah told CBS News' that the president 'doesn't know the history' of the Native peoples.
'Maybe he doesn't know we're different tribes,' said Holiday. She added she found the nickname 'a little offensive.'

The overall optics within the Oval Office were also troubling as the comments came in front of a portrait of President Andrew Jackson.
Jackson's policies led to the forced removal of American Indians out of their ancestral land, causing thousands to die. 
'So, why did they go? Why were they there? He's putting them in the Oval Office to say "You did a good job, and say hi to Pocahontas?" said Michael Smith, a Marine, whose father was a Code Talker to CBS News.

The White House has denied that President Donald Trump's attack on Elizabeth Warren constituted a racial slur - instead accusing the senator of 'lying' about her heritage
Michael Nez, whose father helped develop the code based on the Navajo language, said his father would have been upset to hear Mr. Trump's Pocahontas comment.
'It's too bad he does put his foot in his mouth,' Nez said. 'Why he does it? I don't know.'
Helena Begaii said her 94-year-old Navajo code talker father, Samuel T. Holiday, said he declined the invitation to the White House on Monday.
'I feel really sad that they didn't get treated with respect,' she said. 

The White House denied after the meeting that Trump's comment constituted what many have considered a racial slur - instead accusing Warren of 'lying' about her heritage, and describing that as 'very offensive.'
But several Native American groups issued strongly-worded protests in the wake of the incident.
The Alliance of Colonial Era Tribes (ACET) said it considered Trump's remark to be a slur.
'American Indian names, whether they be historic or contemporary, are not meant to be used as insults. To do so is to reduce them to racial slurs,' it said in a statement.
Likewise, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) regretted in a statement that 'the president's use of the name Pocahontas as a slur to insult a political adversary is overshadowing the true purpose of (Monday's) White House ceremony.'
NCAI president Jefferson Keel emphasized that the real-life Pocahontas, the daughter of a 17th-century Native American chief whose story has been retold countless times including in a hit Disney movie, was 'a hero to her people, the Pamunkey Indian Tribe in Virginia.'
'Once again, we call upon the president to refrain from using her name in a way that denigrates her legacy,' he said.
The NCAI had reacted once before, in April, to Trump calling Warren 'Pocahontas' - saying it hoped the incident was 'but a momentary slip-up.'
Amber Kanazbah Crotty, a Navajo Nation Council Delegate, argued meanwhile that Trump's 'careless' comment represented 'systemic, deep-seated ignorance of Native Americans and our intrinsic right to exist and practice our ways of life.'
Pocahontas' story entered the cultural mainstream thanks to the 1995 Disney animation, which painted a romanticized image of her meeting with Englishman John Smith, chief of the first colony established in Jamestown in 1607.
Later taken captive by the English, she converted to Christianity, took the name Rebecca and would eventually marry another Englishman, John Rolfe, with whom she traveled to England. She died soon thereafter, supposedly aged just 21.

Savannah Guthrie, Lauer’s Today cohost, opened the show Wednesday with the news, reading a statement from Andrew Lack, chairman of NBC News.
“On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment,” Lack said in the statement. “While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.
“Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected, and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender.

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders shrugged off suggestions that anti-Muslim videos President Trump spread online Wednesday morning might be fake – because the 'threat' is real. 
'Whether it is a real video, the threat is real,' President Trump's top spokesperson told journalists outside the West Wing, according to CNN. 'That is what the president is talking about, that is what the president is focused on dealing with, those real threats and those are real no matter how you look at it.' 
President Trump retweeted three videos that purportedly showed 'Muslims' doing bad deeds, which were initially posted by far-right British nationalist Jayda Fransen, who has been convicted of hate crimes. 
None of the videos posted by Fransen – who is the deputy leader of Britain First, a group that stands against the Islamisation of the United Kingdom – have been verified, with police saying that a 'Muslim migrant' portrayed in one, is a Dutch citizen. 
Trump's postings have caused outrage in the United Kingdom, as a number of members of parliament have said they want to see his invitation to visit the country next year rescinded. However, British Prime Minister Theresa May has said the visit will go on.  
In the United States, media figures have condemned Trump's actions louder than American lawmakers.

The videos were posted by Jayda Fransen, the deputy leader of Britain First, a far-right group that stands against the Islamisation of the United Kingdom 
Huckabee Sanders said the president retweeted the three videos to start a conversation on 'border security' and 'immigration.'  
The first video purportedly shows a 'Muslim migrant' beating up a Dutch boy on crutches. A spokesman for the Monnickendam Police, where the incident took place, told MailOnline: 'The boy in the video attacking a boy on crutches is a Dutch national.' 
After that, Trump retweets a video of a Muslim man 'destroy[ing] a statue of Virgin Mary.' 
And finally, the American president retweeted a video Fransen posted where she wrote, 'Islamist mob pushed teenage boy off roof and beats him to death!'    
Last year, Fransen was found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment after accosting a Muslim woman. 
The charge stemmed from a January 2016 incident in which Fransen, wearing a political uniform and during a so-called 'Christian patrol,' accosted a Muslim woman named Sumayyah Sharpe in Luton, England. 
Fransen admitted that she told Sharpe, who was wearing hijab, that Muslim men force women to cover up to avoid rape 'because they cannot control their sexual urges.' 



'That's why they are coming into my country raping women across the continent,' Fransen told Sharpe, according to the Independent. 
Sharpe was in front of her four children at the time. 
Last week, Fransen was also charged with using 'threatening, abusive or insulting words or behavior' for a speech she made at a 'Northern Ireland Against Terrorism' event in August at Belfast City Hall, according to HuffPost.   
Fransen's Twitter account sent out a gleeful message after the president retweeted her videos. 
'THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, DONALD TRUMP, HAS RETWEETED THREE OF DEPUTY LEADER JAYDA FRANSEN'S TWITTER VIDEOS! DONALD TRUMP HIMSELF HAS RETWEETED THESE VIDEOS AND HAS AROUND 44 MILLION FOLLOWERS!' the tweet said. 'GOD BLESS YOU TRUMP!'
For his part, Trump has been blasted for rhetoric considered anti-Muslim. 


In December 2015, on the heels of the San Bernardino terror attack, the GOP candidate called for an all-out ban of Muslims from entering the United States.  
'Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on,' Trump put out in a press release that he also read aloud at a campaign event. 
Once in office, Trump's Muslim ban evolved into a travel ban from a selection of Muslim-majority countries, though has had trouble in the courts.
As Trump's tweets began to reverberate around the internet, those in American government, politics and media began to chime in. 
Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke praised Trump for his Islamophobic messaging.  
'Trump retweets video of crippled white kid in Europe being beaten by migrants, and white people being thrown off a roof and then beaten to death, He's condemned for showing us what the fake news media WON'T,' Duke tweeted. 'Thank God for Trump! That's why we love him!'  
Duke's retort stood out, as his accolades put him in the minority.  
Council on American-Islamic Relations head Nihad Awad tweeted Wednesday: 'Have you no sense of decency, Sir? Do you know how many anti-Muslims incidents in the U.S. were recorded at #CAIR this year alone? 3,296.' 
'And we haven't heard a peep from you,' Awad continued. 'Some president.'  
In a longer statement, Awad added that Trump was telling members of his base 'that they should hate Islam and Muslims.' 
'These are actions one would expect to see on virulent anti-Muslim hate sites, not on the Twitter feed of the president of the United States,' Awad said. 'Trump’s posts amount to incitement to violence against American Muslims.' 
'His actions should be condemned by all American political and religious leaders, regardless of their party or faith,' he added.  
Asked about it on CNN, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper called the retweets 'bizarre and disturbing.'
'And particularly when I think of him doing that in the context of North Korea, where moderation and temperance and thought, I think, is critical,' Clapper said. 
'I have no idea of explaining what, on earth, motivated it,' the ex-DNI chief added, though warned it could rattle relations with American allies around the world. 
Former Obama adviser David Axelrod whacked Trump on Twitter. 
'The @POTUS this morning retweeted unverified, inflammatory anti-videos posted by a neo-fascist party in Britain. The President of the United States! Think about that,' Axelrod wrote. 
Congressional responses were slow to trickle in.  
Rep. Don Beyer, a Democrat from Virginia, was one of the first lawmakers to respond to Trump's retweets on Twitter Wednesday morning. 
'It isn’t surprising that Donald Trump, author of the Muslim Ban, spread propaganda from a person convicted of harassing Muslims,' Beyer wrote. 
'It is shocking and awful to see such Islamophobia from the president of a country which protects religious freedom and is home to millions of Muslims,' the Democratic congressman added. 
He was soon joined by Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat from Connecticut.  
'There are more than 3 million Muslim Americans,' Himes wrote. '[President Trump's] disgusting and dangerous retweets this morning show how important it is that we defend not only our democracy, but basic human decency from this man.'  
American media figures were more taken aback by Trump's move.
'Trump has railed against "illegals," African American athletes, used slur Pocahontas and shared anti-Muslim videos this week. It's Wednesday,' tweeted CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta.
'Jayda Fransen is a wretched human being and no matter what expectations one has for him, it's revolting and actually shocking that Trump is re-tweeting multiple hate-mongering videos from her of random Muslims doing bad things,' wrote The Intercept's Glenn Greenwald. 
In the United Kingdom, officials are facing pressure to cancel Trump's state visit in the aftermath of his trio of retweets.
The widower of murdered politician Jo Cox, who was shot and stabbed by a man yelling, 'Britain First,' strongly condemned Trump's actions.  

'Trump has legitimized the far right in his own country, now he's trying to do it in ours,' said Brendan Cox on Wednesday. 'Spreading hatred has consequences and the president should be ashamed of himself.' 
The Labour Party's Mary Creagh, a member of parliament, tweeted, 'He is not welcome here,' after reminding people what Cox's killer had said. 
She was joined by Chuka Umunna, another parliament member from the Labour Party, who told Sky News, 'I don't think the president of the United States, a president who has not only promoted bigotry, misogyny and racism in his own country, I don't think he is welcome here.'  
'I think the invite that has been made to him to come to our country in early 2018 should be withdrawn,' Umunna continued. 'What we see here is a president retweeting and promoting the propaganda of a far right racist bigoted group, members of which have been arrested and convicted for promoting hatred in this country.' 
'I am absolutely astounded that a man – any person – in his position holding the office that he does should be promoting the propaganda of a far right British group,' Umunna added. 
London Mayor Sadiq Khan – the city's first Muslim mayor – who has tussled with Trump over the president's so-called travel ban, said, 'Britain First is a vile, hate-fueled organization whose views should be condemned, not amplified.' 
British Prime Minister Theresa May frowned at Trump's actions, however did not rescind an invitation to spend time in the United Kingdom next year.  
'It is wrong for the president to have done this,' a spokesman for Downing Street said. 
When asked about Trump's future travel plans to the U.K., the spokesman said, 'The United States is one of our oldest and closest allies. An invitation for a state visit has been extended and accepted. Further details will be announced in due course.'
