Satellite Sentinel Project / DigitalGlobe

Satellite Sentinel Project / Digital Globe

GOOGLE TRANSLATE:

For six years, the American actor and star of Nespresso George Clooney invests millions of dollars in a satellite monitoring project in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
No, the title of this article is not the synopsis of the next blockbuster for George Clooney.
Two French journalists were released in late June an unofficial biography of the star of Nespresso: "George Clooney, a secret ambition" (Editions of the moment). Between a chapter on marrying Amal Alamuddin and another on the indices of its supposed hidden homosexuality, the authors suggest "an incredible mission that seems straight out of a spy movie": that of George Clooney "funding a satellite to monitor the actions of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. " We wanted to learn more about this amazing story.
It all began in December 2010. Already a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a think tank on US foreign policy, and voice of the United Nations on the situation in Darfur, George Clooney founded the NGO Satellite Sentinel Project (SSP) with his friend John Prendergast, defender of human rights at the head of Enough Project. Their objective ? Gather pictures, analysis and advocacy to end genocide and crimes against humanity.

George Clooney has never hidden his rather special activity. "Most of the money I earn through the Nespresso advertisements, I spend it to place a satellite above the border between Sudan and South Sudan to keep an eye on Bashir. Then he made . a statement to say I spy and whether I would like to have a camera following me wherever I go I said, 'well, welcome to my life Mr. war criminal.' I want war criminals have the same notoriety as me. I think it is deserved, "boasted it the Guardian in July 2013.

George Clooney proud of his new toy as paraderait after buying our new iPhone? Today, the SSP communications director wishes to re-explain things. Greg Hittelman says Mashable FR: "Just to clarify, the Satellite Sentinel Project never owned a satellite, but through our partnership with DigitalGlobe, we paid to use existing satellites and shoot images of an area of our choice. "
Because no, the hero of "Ocean's Eleven" was not offered a satellite. The SSP pays to get images from the American DigitalGlobe, "a company that has its own satellite fleet and its analysts, and sells his images both public / private military as" explains Alain Bensoussan specialist lawyer of new technologies to Mashable FR.

Evidence of War Crimes
In the SSP offices, near Harvard Square in Boston, a small team mainly composed of volunteer students compare the images captured by the satellite over a war zone with older images of the same base zoned. They are looking for evidence of change, construction of military roads, installation of camps ... "The Satellite Sentinel Project has provided evidence of major attacks by the Sudanese government on civilians in Darfur and the Nuba Mountains" Greg Hittelman lists. "With our satellite surveillance, it also helped the rangers of the National Park Garamba [Democratic Republic of the Congo] to fight against elephant poaching and ivory trafficking".

And that the findings of the Satellite Sentinel Project to be known to the greatest number, the photos are uploaded to Flickr, and "all reports and satellite imagery analyzes have been published and are freely available" on the Site of the NGO. Some of these documents were used as evidence by the International Criminal Court indictment of Omar al-Bashir for crimes against humanity and war crimes. 72 years old, yet it is still the head of the Sudan since his coup in 1989.
George Clooney but he has the right to spy as any country or any leader? "That is spying if a country. This is espionage if it is the United Nations, perhaps. But what if I'm just a paparazzi with a target of 650 km? Why would it be spying? I'm just a tourist who takes photos and puts them on the Web. I do not see what is wrong, "says the actor at the International Business Times in 2012.

Outer space, a common good of humanity
The IB Times then asked: "George Clooney's efforts, however laudable they may be, are they ethical?" The site wrote that the star and its partners "dictating their own rules without any structure in international law." False. George Clooney as anyone, has the right to make satellite monitoring and publicly distribute images. "Outer space is the common property of mankind and it is in this sense, governed by the principle of freedom of use by all states," said Alain Bensoussan to Mashable FR, citing the Treaty the 1967 space, "on the other hand, observation and information collection are not contrary to the treaty peaceful activities in space." It is the same for the distribution of these images.
However, some national legislation can come framed satellite monitoring. "The United States and France have set up administrative systems to control private actors satellite imaging market" in order to "constrain" marketing "for threat reasons of national security, to comply with international obligations, national defense, foreign policy, etc. ". Not to take into account the right to respect for privacy and the right to protection of personal data (including photos). "But nothing seems for now prevent such activity and international law is not likely to change imminently," says Mr. Bensoussan.
Today, however, the Satellite Sentinel Project announces "no longer collect satellite images" preferring to concentrate on a new initiative, "natural continuum SSP" The Sentry, which aims to dismantle the networks that finance and benefit conflicts killers in Africa. But the George Clooney of NGOs said "pleased to see that other organizations such as Human Rights Watch and the United Nations now also use space imagery in favor of human rights, peace , prevention against the atrocity and documentation against war crimes. "
Like what George Clooney is not only used to sell millions of coffee capsules.

Well, if they can't control the monsters out there killing ppl without any right whatsoever to do that, why should they try to stop ppl from taking snaps and live feed photos of Monsters sneaking up on ppl to kill them?  Thats a back handed way to handle how monsters get away with war crimes...IMO
