Rome is a theatre set. Its history is out there on show rather than hidden behind closed doors. It is gloriously over the top.
And the Cavalieri echoes this confident mood.

It must be the only hotel in the world with an old master hanging in reception. A magnificent Tiepelo, worth around £30million, decorates one wall. The hotel decided to put it behind glass when an American boy was found throwing darts at other masterpiece canvasses in the building.

The Cavalieri also boasts the only three-star Michelin restaurant in the city, where Bavarian chef Heinz Beck, a friend of the Pope, holds sway - his signature fagottelli so heavenly that both Michelle Obama and Sarah Brown asked for the recipe when he cooked for the First Wives at a G7 summit.

The art of the possible is the rule here: from private visits to palaces rarely seen by the public, to hiring a Ferrari for the day.

George Clooney and Julia Roberts always stay at the penthouse when they are in Rome, with its original Andy Warhol dollar-sign silk screens, Karl Lagerfeld sofas and sliding roof to give access to the bubbling jacuzzi on the private patio.

Perhaps the glory days of Rome aren't over at all.
