On the off chance you didn't already know that Amal Clooney is amazing, her latest project just sealed the deal

Imagine if Amal Clooney paid for your A Levels.
Glossing over the amazing Sixth Form chat that would make ('Do your parents give you an allowance?' 'Nah, Amal's all over it'), and temporarily forgetting the possibility of spending Christmas at the Clooneys' ('Pass the turkey will you, George?'), getting the seal of academic approval from Amal would be like Adele voting for you on the X Factor - without Simon Cowell even calling in any favours.
Which is we're so excited by the news that Amal is launching a new annual scholarship in partnership with 100 LIVES (that's the initiative which created the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity - a $1 million global humanitarian prize recognising those who put themselves at risk in order to help others survive).
Created specifically to strengthen cross-cultural education, the 'Amal Clooney Scholarship' will send one female student from Lebanon to UWC College - an international, mixed boarding school in Armenia, which currently teaches 190 students from 64 countries - so that she can complete a two year international baccalaureate programme.
To be in with a chance of being awarded the scholarship, you need to demonstrate 'exemplary' academic performance, and show a remarkable interest in human rights and international issues.
The first 'Amal Clooney Scholarship' will be awarded to 16 year old Pamela Tebchrany – a Lebanese student who graduated top of her class and is fluent in Arabic, French and English. She will be using the scholarship to pursue her interests in human rights and women’s equality.
'This scholarship will give young women from Lebanon the opportunity of a lifetime,” says Amal. 'Cross-cultural learning and studying abroad can be transformative. I am grateful to 100 LIVES for helping to open doors for these bright and talented young women.'

'As a leading human rights barrister and campaigner, Amal Clooney is an inspirational role model for young women around the world. She exemplifies integrity, compassion and dedication – and typifies what it means to be a global citizen across all cultures,' adds Ruben Vardanyan, co-founder of 100 LIVES and UWC Dilijan. '100 LIVES recognizes the need for future generations to have greater cross-cultural understanding. The college strives to make education a force for peace by bringing together aspiring young leaders from all over the world.'
In other news, turns out that George Clooney is currently co-chair of the Aurora Prize, and will present the inaugural priza at a ceremony in Yerevan, Armenia on April 24, 2016. Which is pretty interesting too.

Re: Amal Clooney Scholarship for Women:100 Lives
I had thought that '100 Lives is focussed on Armenian issues. It's interesting to read that it actually isn't (well, the university is in Armenia but the young women come from Lebanon). And I like the idea that a young woman from a Middle eastern country gets a chance for a better education in another country. I think that it always helps to understand other cultures and nationalities when you've lived there and with them.

Amal Clooney has launched a new scholarship programme
The international human rights lawyer has partnered up with 100 LIVES to offer one young woman each year the chance to enrol in a two-year international baccalaureate programme.
The 37-year-old, who studied at St Hugh's College, Oxford and wed her actor husband last year, said the initiative will be "the opportunity of a lifetime".
The new Amal Clooney Scholarship is part of an ongoing effort by 100 LIVES – the organisation behind the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity – to strengthen cross-cultural education and understanding through philanthropic projects.
"As a leading human rights barrister and campaigner, Amal is an inspirational role model for young women around the world. She exemplifies integrity, compassion and dedication – and typifies what it means to be a global citizen," Ruben Vardanyan, co-founder of 100 LIVES, said.

"The college strives to make education a force for peace by bringing together aspiring young leaders from all over the world," he added.
Recipients of the Amal Clooney Scholarship will be chosen annually based on their academic performance and interest in international issues.
The first scholarship will be awarded to Pamela Tebchrany – a dedicated Lebanese student who graduated top of her class and is fluent in Arabic, French and English.

"This scholarship will give young women from Lebanon the opportunity of a lifetime," Amal Clooney said.
"I am grateful to 100 LIVES for helping to open doors for these bright and talented young women," she went on to add.
Beyond the scholarship, both Amal and George have ties to 100 LIVES. The ER hunk is co-chair of the Aurora Prize, which he will present at a ceremony in Armenia on April 24.

Re: Amal Clooney Scholarship for Women:100 Lives
At last good news!....Something with a bit of guts! Not hemlines and sunglasses....
I had feared that AC was suffering from the same fate as The Donald….”The Nylon Haired Fuc**er” to quote London Transport…
Lord knows I got great sport out of The Don and his musings, laugh America, I thought my knickers would never dry…until the poles showed that like Amal’s hemlines the more absurd they became the more the public* lapped it up…(*the public should hence forth be thought of as a collective 3 year old).
I don’t mean to insult in anyway our American cousins on COH…”The collective 3 year old” is a global thing…Lizzy was gobsmacked when I said I enjoyed the musings of The Nylon Haired Fu**er….Lizzy how did you know there was the remotest chance he would be taken seriously? I didn’t see it….
But you see Lizzy, I thought he was a joke…a bad joke…but now I see a dangerous joke…and I wonder did they say the same about Saddam Hussein, Bashar Hafez al-Assad, Hitler, further back even…were people like me laughing, when we should have been praying…
Are we living in the age of the collective 3 year old…a world populated by people who believe just about anything… will swallow Santa and any other fairy story fed up to us on the PR plate….
Has the battle for hearts and minds become the battle of image over intelligence…popularity over common sense…
The musings of The Donald, like Amal’s little skirts or hi shoes generate column inches…and multitude of commentary/comments….Is that the yard stick we now use to measure character….
Is that success?
I've gone right off topic, apologies...
Yes this story is preferable to fashion and price tags....any day of the week....

Re: Amal Clooney Scholarship for Women:100 Lives
There is nothing, absolutely nothing funny about Donald Trump. The people who support him can claim "bigot" as their middle name.
There is so much about Amal that we don't know as far as her work on humanitarian issues, especially as they pertain to women. She probably is involved in a number of worthwhile endeavors that just don't get reported.
What a person wears or how much their clothes cost don't frame how charitable a person is.

The problem is that this right-wing, 'you're either with us or you're our enemy' politics is successful in many countries now. In France the Front National just didn't succeed because the conservatives and the socialists collaborared. In Poland, Hungary, Slowakia and other Eastern European countries the governmenrs are very conservative and have an 'anti-refugee-/anti-islamic-'politics (sorry, I can't describe it better). In Germany a new political group tries to 'preserve the German culture' without even defining what this is. Fortunately we are quite aware of these issues - because of our glorious history... Let's not forget about Russia and the nice guy Putin...
And we don't know what a person is able to do. Yes, a person who believes in Allah may detonate a bomb - or find a cure for cancer. So can do somebody who believes in God, Buddha or another deity or is agnostic. Thisbperson may have lived in a country for his whole life already or just immigrated. This person may come from any country in the world, no race is more intelligent as the others, we're just separated by different chances and opportunities. And if foundations like '100 Lives' help to eliminate these inequalities, this can't be bad!
About Amal: I've said this already but: We see her about once a week and really don't know anything her daily life. We don't know how much or less she works. How much she's involved in humanitarian efforts. And I personally really don't like prejudices.

Let me just add WWHS that I totally embrace your apt descriptive "The Nylon Haired F**ker"! Wish I could have come up with that one. You have such a colorful way of getting your points across WWHS!
BTW whatever happened to the petition drawn up by the mayor of London to ban The Donald from Great Britian??.
carolhathaway, yep we're on the same page ...

It's 'nylon haired tosser' according to a sign on the London underground (the Tube) notice earlier this week: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Donnamarie wrote:Let me just add WWHS that I totally embrace your apt descriptive "The Nylon Haired F**ker"! But before Melbert shouts at us all for going off-topic, happy to see Amal supporting something like this and hope the women [why does the news report call them 'females'?] take every possible benefit from this. Amal herself has the life she has from being able to study abroad so I'm sure she more than most understands what an advantage this is.

Katie,
that's just great!!!
I still wish he would show up and say: "Hey guys, I'm just a comedian and wanted to show you how easy it is to influence you with extreme and racist prejudices."
But I guess it isn't going to happen...
