TOMORROWLAND AT WAR WITH DISNEY AGAIN OVER NAMING RIGHTS
It’s no secret that Tomorrowland has been at war with Disney over their name since expanding to the United States in 2013. The Belgian-based festival was forced to rename itself TomorrowWorld when it launched in Atlanta, GA, as the monolithic film company has held the US rights to the name ‘Tomorrowland’ since 1970. Things died for a while, but issues have suddenly resurfaced now that Disney have announced that they’re to release a film starring George Clooney titled ‘Tomorrowland’ later this year.
ID&T, owners of Tomorrowland, have the rights to the name in Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg and have given the finger to Disney by denying them the rights to use the name when the film comes out in Europe.
Sharon Daboul, ID&T’s trademark lawyer, said to the Belfast Telegraph:
“Disney has a trademark registration in the USA for the term Tomorrowland, dating back to 1970. With this registration, it was successfully able to prevent the music festival from calling itself Tomorrowland when it launched in the USA. However, the music festival has the rights to the term in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and has prevented Disney from using the name in these countries.”
Well in ID&T! And the battle rages on!
