Re: Trailer for Monuments Men
Most of the main characters are married....at least George Stout and James Rorimer were. Rose Valland played by Cate Blanchett never got married and was considered a spinster....she was in her 40's during the time in question. I am so hoping there is no romance between the MD and CB. As I said on the main MM thread I am bit disappointed in the tone. Of course I will need to see more as this is a very small clip. The music is good but is just the trailer music....I doubt it is the music in the film. Sorry I know everyone is excited but I wish I hadn't known the story in advance.

Music is great, yes.
But I´m hoping there is some romance between who ever, as long as there is some romance.

Well if there is no romance than for sure lot of jokes to laugh about. Maybe it is more like a "boys adventure"

Re: Trailer for Monuments Men
The trailer is only 1:30 long approximately, so it probably doesn't define the general tone. However if it gives an indication of a lighhearted or non-chalant attitude towards a critical situation, I think maybe it's because of the element of absurdity at defying the odds. The characters at the bar are emphasizing the challenge.silly girl wrote: As I said on the main MM thread I am bit disappointed in the tone. Clooney assembles his men to salvage art from the Nazis & the outcome as we know on a historical perspective, is positive.
If he made the film with a sombre undertone, it may not add to its marketabilty.
Consumers want feel-good escapism. Besides, if they succeed ultimately, then why not add a little humor.
Of course, there could also be variation in the tone where there are distressing & serious scenes too. Like the tension of seeing DuJardin's character escape.

Re: Trailer for Monuments Men
It looks boring to me, some stupid jokes inserted. I never think Clooney and Matt Damon are good together. And WHY again in another movie John Goodman is cast? Hard to tell if the public will like this one. Clooney seems way too old for this genre of a movie.

MM has a little "Ocean 11" feel. I hope the music is used for rolling credits as it doesn't fit the era. Another Clooney and friends guy film which I find attractive. Good humor and an interesting story. Love George's voice.
Do you think George's "tash" will receive its own credit as a cast member?

Movie trailer: George Clooney saves art from the Nazis in true story based on local author’s book
The trailer for George Clooney’s big-screen adaptation of Robert Edsel’s The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History made its online bow Thursday morning, and, at first glance, the story of the men and women tasked with rescuing artwork pilfered by the Nazis during World War II looks like a cross between, oh, The Dirty Dozen, Kelly’s Heroes and, naturally, Ocean’s Eleven.
Courtesy of Monuments Men Foundation
George Stout, who is portrayed in the film by George Clooney.
“But it also has the gravitas of Saving Private Ryan,” says Edsel, the St. Mark’s and SMU graduate who has spent more than six years shining the spotlight on the 345 museum directors, curators and historians charged with tracking down and returning the stolen artwork. “It’s just a trailer, a teaser,” he says of the lighthearted look-see at the film directed by Clooney, who co-wrote with producing partner Grant Heslov. Did it make you want to see the movie? Then its work is done here. “The movie’s funny,” says Edsel. “But it’s quite moving too.”
The Dallas oilman-turned-Monuments Men Foundation founder, who’d visited the set three times during filming, only saw the trailer for the first time Thursday morning. He was on the tennis court when he was informed it was making the rounds; he immediately stopped what he was doing and dialed it up on his iPhone. At first glance the only thing missing is Brad Pitt. Bill Murray will do in his stead, starring alongside Clooney, his Ocean’s franchisemate Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bob Balaban, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin and other household names.
Clooney plays Harvard art conservationist George Stout, down to the mustache; Damon, Metropolitan Museum of Art curator James J. Rorimer. Not quite the thieves and pickpockets of Vegas.
“It’s hugely exciting,” says Edsel, to see the trailer close to 20 months after the film was first announced. “There’s been so much sweat going into this thing and sacrifice to make sure these men and women’s story was told. George Clooney and Grant Heslov, hats off to them. They saw the bigness of the story and were able to recruit other great actors. I know they too were excited to represent these artists. I think it’s an exciting moment.
“It was always my vision for all the years I was working on this to make sure these remarkable heroes’ story was known around the world. They’re heroes of civilization. I don’t care how successful a book is, you can’t reach the audience a film can. And the team they have assembled is a rare, rare moment."
The movie opens in December -- plenty of time to buy Edsel’s book or its accompanying documentary The Rape of Europa or the recently published follow-up Saving Italy.
“I’ve made this point to the actors; we’ve shared these thoughts,” says Edsel when asked about the impact the movie will have on book sales. “This is a great, great moment in my view, where you’re marrying capitalism and private enterprise with doing good.”

Re: Trailer for Monuments Men
I know what you are saying and I have the same feeling (experience) about it (allemain).
Confession time, I have that barbarian blood in my veins. My other grand father was from Germany. And the other...
from Russian.
In a way or in another they are still there, the barbarian ways, yes. Last Sat. I was in ropepark (climbing) and on a counter this guy from Hannover just came and elbowed me away from the line and stepped on my feet with his huge and heavy climbing shoes. How rude! My friend was yelling at him and I joined the chorus.
He didn´t apologize or step back. Just stared at me. I told the man behind the counter that we were there first, in 3 different languages, because I wasn´t sure which one he spoke. So he took us first. He was so nice. Then this woman approached, Hannover´s (hannoverian´s not sure how to spell it) wife. She had a derriere like a roll hay. We laughed so hard...even the guy behind the counter laughed, "Is she going to climb? Trees will bend".
Anyone who knows history or has read the book the MM probably wonders the same thing. It´s not imagination. It has really happened. Not so long time ago.

Re: Trailer for Monuments Men
Not sure if we've got this here yet. Lainey's thoughts on the trailer:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
These two, together
August 9, 2013
Here we go…
Here they come…
Award season pictures all rolling out their first trailers. The latest is George Clooney’s The Monuments Men starring Matt Damon and Bill Murray and John Goodman and so many other friends and Cate Blanchett gets to hang out with all of them.
You don’t need me to tell you what it’s about. They’ve edited it so that George tells you himself. In his signature way – like it’s an inside joke, like he’s lecturing and teasing at the same time. As opposed to that sh-tty trailer for The Counselor that was released yesterday, this is an effective preview. It has comedy, it has gravitas, it’s sexy, but serious too to honour the subject matter, and, amazingly, given the subject matter, somehow George has made it seem …fun, without disrespecting the situation.
It’s a testament to his ongoing confidence as a filmmaker. You can see it in every frame.
Sarah linked to it yesterday but it’s worth another mention – Clooney’s interview with Deadline the other day, you should read it again if you already have or for the first time if you haven’t. Not the part where he goes off on the hedge fund guy but the part about creating jobs in Hollywood, about employing 300 people, about making sure people can feed their families. This is why he doesn’t make Johnny Depp money.
Now, these two, and the photos – they’re from 2001. And they’ll be doing this through award season. These two, together. We win?
