RARE REHEARSAL PHOTOS FROM 1958 OSCARS

17 pictures at link of old Hollywood - worth a look if Oscars are your thing....
Back in the day, being a genuine Hollywood star entailed more than just acting (or looking good while sort of acting): leading men and women had to sing, dance, play it straight, play the clown — in short, they had to know how to entertain.
Little wonder, then, that in 1958, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences planned its 30th Oscars ceremony — the fifth ever to be televised — it called upon the town’s multi-talented screen icons to do what they did best: namely, put on barn-burner of a show.
LIFE photographer Leonard McCombe was a fly on the wall that year as stars from Paul Newman and Zsa Zsa Gabor to Kirk Douglas and Mae West dropped in to rehearse for the big event. As it turned out, however, only a handful of McCombe’s marvelous photos were published in the magazine. Here, 55 years later, are the pictures that ran in LIFE, and many more that didn’t.

They are great, aren't they. I enjoy the more candid shots, not so staged etc.

Thanks theminis for sharing those wonderful glimpses of a golden time in Hollywood.
I wonder what those people would make of everything that
goes on now ?

Re: RARE REHEARSAL PHOTOS FROM 1958 OSCARS
I think that some of them would no doubt look down their nose.
One of the major differences I think between now and then is that some of the scandals etc were more protected and hidden from the public to a large extent, so that these stars of the day had a real mystery to them.
Now everyone wants you to know their business, there is no shame it seems.
Not sure if that is where you are going Joanna, but when I saw the photos, it reminded me that I thought a lot of the stars of yesteryear had more class or at least exuded it.

Re: RARE REHEARSAL PHOTOS FROM 1958 OSCARS
So true. The same is true for politicians as well. Back in old Hollywood, there was still an aura of the unknown. We didn't know that so and so was cheating on his wife or their sexual orientation. Now we know way too much, or think we do anyway, and I don't know how people in the public survive,
