A DESIGNER catfight is adding molto piccante to Milan Fashion Week, with the haute hisses off the catwalks proving as captivating as the clothes on them. The claws came out when Roberto Cavalli called Giorgio Armani a ''Reuccio'', which means ''Little King'' who wields an unfair influence over Milan's fashion community.

In the post on his blog, Cavalli complained the Italian fashion industry's governing body gives brands such as Armani and Dolce & Gabbana preferential placement in Milan Fashion Week.

''As usual, the Camera Nazionale della Moda is washing its hands of the situation and it will not go against the wishes of Little King Armani, and therefore the problems are mine alone,'' Cavalli wrote.

The designer worried that buyers and editors would miss his show today because many leave Milan early to attend Paris Fashion Week. ''What can I do?'' Cavalli wrote. ''His every choice is perceived as an order!''

Giorgio Armani fired back at the designer when he held a media conference before his Emporio Armani show.

''Cavalli should be quiet because the 'Little King' could start to get angry,'' Armani said. He could have added that Cavalli, whether by chance or planning, attracted plenty of attention, certainly in Australia, with the attendance of Liz Hurley and Shane Warne at his show.

As it was, the Giorgio Armani show had the effect of a further ''so there!'' moment in the spat.

Exquisitely coloured and draped gowns, intricately beaded pantsuits and priceless jewellery were among the pieces on show in Eccentric. The exhibition, which spans almost three decades of Giorgio Armani, revealed a designer worthy of the royal treatment.

On display was Armani's work since 1985, with a focus on his more idiosyncratic creations. But at heart the designer is a classicist with a minimal bent. Light overcoats, cropped wide-leg trousers and impeccably tailored jackets were at the core of the Giorgio Armani show immediately after the exhibition opening last night.

Dove grey, mushroom and inky navy made up the key colour palette of the collection. Eveningwear shimmered with sequins and beading on gowns, cap-sleeve blouses and trousers, always crowned with small circular headpieces.

Earlier in the day, Marni turned up the volume with a show of smock shapes, exaggerated box pleats and generous cuts .
