Ranking George: Your Top 5
Joanna posted a bit of George's filmography on another thread, and looking at it I wondered if we'd ever done a thread where we put his films in a "Best of" order. I couldn't find one, so I thought it might be fun, and give us something to talk about besides what color Stacy's fedora is today. So here's a full list of films (post-ER only; I don't think anything before that would make anyone's Top 5 anything) (italics are films he directed):
2011 The Descendants
2011 The Ides of March
2010 The American
2009 Fantastic Mr. Fox
2009 The Men Who Stare at Goats

Re: Ranking George: Your Top 5
Missa, I loved The American too but I don't think it hits my top 5. Can't rank The Descendants cause though I bought dvd, haven't watched it yet. So I'd pick - in no particular order - O Brother Where Art Thou?, Michael Clayton, Up In The Air, The American, and Oceans (which I lump together.)
Reason being I think those films show he DOES have more range than some give him credit for. And Oceans because it/they along with ER kind of established his public personna.

That's why I picked The American. It's such a tightly controlled performance, and his character is really not that likable, yet you really root for things to turn out for him. Very different from the "same old same old' he gets accused of playing. And if you get to lump the Ocean's films together, I get to add O Brother, which I skipped over and completely love.

Re: Ranking George: Your Top 5
Sad that I've only been able to see a few of his films. Still it would be hard for me to rank them, because in some I liked his performance but felt at least one of his costars was weak, hurting the film (UITA). Overall performances were better in "The Perfect Storm."

That's an interesting way of looking at it. I was looking more at his individual performance and how much he carried the film. For example, I left off Syriana from my list, even though I think that's an excellent film overall and a great piece of work by George, because his role was no lager than anyone else's in that film. I think I came at it from, which of these movies will I stop and watch if I come across them on cable?
New question: which of the films he directed is your favorite? I can't choose between GNGL and Confessions; they're tied for #1.

Re: Ranking George: Your Top 5
Oh for me GN&GL every time as I loved the subject matter
and the thrill of watching professional journalists working so well
together as a team during what became an historic period of my lifetime.
I thought both George and David had a brilliant rapport
and George's direction and attention to detail first class.
Oh I must watch it again soon....It's on at the moment on BBC2, but I like to watch my bluray copy best.

Re: Ranking George: Your Top 5
This is a hard one indeed.
- Out of Sight
- Michael Clayton
- Burn After
- The Fantastic Mr. Fox
- The Ides of March
I really wanna say The American but I have a slight aversion against it being so slow, George gives a really good performance in it though.
