Longtime local media personality Nick Clooney has been announced as commencement speaker for spring graduation.

Longtime local media personality Nick Clooney has been announced as commencement speaker for spring graduation ceremonies.

On Tuesday, The University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees announced Clooney’s appointment and that he will be receiving an honorary degree from the university.

Clooney, a Northern Kentucky native and father of actor George Clooney, has been a Cincinnati media personality since 1966, when he first appeared as a host on WLW radio.

Among many media accomplishments, he hosted the “Nick Clooney Show,” a morning talk show, on WLWC television in Columbus in 1968. The show was moved to WCPO Channel 9 in Cincinnati from 1969-72 and then continued on WKRC-TV channel 12 from 1973-75.

Clooney also served as a columnist for The Cincinnati Post from 1989 until the Post closed its doors in 2008.

Most recently, Nick and George Clooney were arrested March 16 at the Sudanese embassy in Washington, D.C., for attempting to convince Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir to stop violence against his own people and to allow humanitarian aid into the country.

The Clooneys also produced hosted a documentary released in 2007 on the conflicts in Darfur, Sudan.

A formal nomination for Clooney to be the 2012 spring commencement speaker was submitted by former president of the UC Foundation Mike Carroll and was submitted to the UC Board of Trustees in 2010.

“A respected journalist who is selfless in his advocacy on behalf of the refugees of Darfur, Nick is a caring and concerned leader who gets the job done – a man of action, well-deserving of our highest honor,” Carroll said in his recommendation to Chairperson of the Honors Committee George Schaefer.

Clooney will speak at spring commencement and graduation June 8-9.

Friday, June 8: 2:00 pm
Saturday, June 9: 9:00 am and 2pm

These are United States Eastern Daylight Saving TImes. I do not know if people outside the US can see the website.

I do not know what my role will be during the commencement, but I will let you all know when it happens.

George deserves an honorary degree from Northern Kentucky University, since he went there years ago.

OK, folks, listen up!!

It has been confirmed that Nick Clooney will receive his honorary doctoral degree from the University of Cincinnati at 9:00 am on Saturday, June 9 at the morning ceremony. I have volunteered a an assistant for the two day ceremony, but I do not know what my duties will be, or what hours I will be working.

I have received word from the commencement coordinator that I will have the honored task of making sure that the undergraduate students will be in their proper formations so that they will receive their respective diplomas in order. We will have the biggest graduating class in the history of the University of Cincinnati, so it is very important that the students will be in order (I will be with a team of six other people, so it will be a massive task, indeed). In 1995, I received two bachelor degrees from the University of Cincinnati from the Evening College/Business Administration Division, so I will relive that wonderful day again (truly, it was one of the best days of my life)

No, I was working in my office on Friday afternoon. I will be working on Saturday morning and afternoon in the gymnasium, getting the students ready to march into the arena (playing the part of the sheep dog corralling the sheep). I will not be in sight of a camera

I just got back from commencement. I was on duty for ten hours straight, with a 30 minute lunch break.

I was able to get some long distance shots of NIck on stage, but I will not post them, since you cannot see where he is.

SInce I was a staff volunteer, I was able to be in the arena area, but there was tight police security for the president's party (this is the president of the University of Cincinnati, not President Obama). The party was whisked away in several sets of elevators, so I was unable to get any close-up shots of Nick. Only police security was allowed near the president's party. However, the party had a private wine and cheese party in the Faculty Club.

I totally enjoyed Nick's commencement speech. My favorite part was about the "roughage speech," given by the doctor. For those of you who saw the commencement, what parts did you all like? Lets' share our stories, here.

Oh MM, I so enjoyed his whole speech! I loved the very beginning where they showed the little video. When he started his talk, he spoke about what his obituary would look like. "Nick Clooney, brother of the wonderful Rosemary Clooney, father of the Oscar winning actor, director George Clooney, died today". (sorry, those aren't the exact words, but CRS is bad today). But he had serious notes and hilarious parts. Really nothing about his family, not even Nina, Ada or the kids. But, it really was wonderful! Thanks again MM for letting us know about this. I'm so glad I got to see it!

I liked that video also, although I have seen it before on various shows about Nick/George Clooney. If you saw the photos of Nick when he was younger, he almost looks like George's twin brother.

I talked with some of the young (22-24 years old) graduating students, and some thought that Nick was George's uncle, or much older brother. I explained that Nick was George's father, because I am a native Cincinnatian, and I saw the Nick Clooney phenomenon while I was growing up here. Many were shocked at how much Nick resembled George in these older photos and videos.

Thanks MM. I followed Nick's newspaper columns until the paper went out of biz and I really enjoyed his commentary there, so the speech was probably pretty awesome as well as insightful!
