Can we figure this out?
I just found it on the internet posted in a discussion forum, so the usual disclaimer about how there's no way of knowing whether or not it's true.
You can click on the link to see people's responses, the majority of which are calling BS because apparently California doesn't acknowledge common law 'marriages'.
When asked when the relationship was supposed to have happened, this is the response:

This is a story from a good friend of mine who worked for Section Eight, the production company Clooney ran with Steven Soderbergh.
Perennial bachelor Clooney had been living with his girlfriend for 2 years. Very cool chick, evidently, they got along well, but then eventually split up -- and did so on very good terms. Clooney paid for the girl's law school tuition, gave her a new car, and $250,000 just to be nice. Then she moved out.
Then a year later, my friend gets a fax in the office. It's from the girl's attorney. Apparently she filed for a common law marriage with Clooney, since they had been living together long enough. With California's common law marriage statutes, she was due much more cash than the quarter mil he gave her. My friend didn't want to deliver the fax so he gave it to Clooney's assistant, who then waited for GC to come out of his office and handed the fax to him. Clooney read it silently, then slammed his fist into the wall, making a big hole.
Shortly thereafter, Clooney settled out of court with the girl because he didn't want any of this to get into the papers. He grabbed a marker on the office desk, went over to the hole that was still in the wall, and wrote a figure next to it: "7.5 million dollars."

Yeah probably 04-05. I don't know the chick's name and I'm pretty sure Clooney is nowhere close to gay. All I know is my friend got the fax in the office from the girl's lawyer, Clooney punched the wall, and settled out of court for *something* for 7.5 mil. My friend assumed it had to be common law because he knows they weren't married, but I guess he could have been wrong. I don't know the law at all.

Re: Can we figure this out?
Common Law Marriage is not recognized in the state of California.
Learn what it is and where it's recognized.
Contrary to popular belief, even if two people live together for a certain number of years, if they don't intend to be married and present themselves to others as a married couple, there is no common law marriage. More particularly, a common law marriage can occur only when:
• a heterosexual couple lives together in a state that recognizes common law marriages
• for a significant period of time (not defined in any state)
• holding themselves out as a married couple -- typically this means using the same last name, referring to the other as "my husband" or "my wife" and filing a joint tax return, and
• intending to be married.
Unless all four are true, there is no common law marriage. When a common law marriage exists, the couple must go through a formal divorce to end the relationship.
Which states recognize common law marriage?
Common law marriage is recognized only in the following states:
• Alabama
• Colorado
• District of Columbia
• Iowa
• Kansas
• Montana
• New Hampshire (for inheritance purposes only)
• Oklahoma
• Pennsylvania
• Rhode Island
• South Carolina
• Texas
• Utah

I'm calling BS the only one who I know for sure got a huge payout was Celine and that is said to be about 4 million. It would either be Krista or Lisa with that time frame. Lisa lived mostly in London and I don't think Krista ever actually moved in. The fact the person doesn't know the name but knows all the other details raises my eyebrows. It also would have hit the press Celine's certainly did that is partly how she got such a great payout. The Law School comment fits around Celine although she gave her law career up to follow George. Also used was George's own guilt about her giving up her country etc for him. I think it's someone using details from the split with Celine. No one else fits the bill!

And in case anyone is wondering about Italy here’s a tad-bit of information that I think is interesting:

Unwed couples get new rights in Italy
By FRANCES D'EMILIO
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER
ROME -- The Italian Cabinet on Thursday approved proposed legislation granting legal
rights to unmarried couples in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships.
The decision came despite alarm among Christian Democrats in the center-left
government and harsh criticism from the Catholic Church.
Equal Opportunity Minister Barbara Pollastrini said that if Parliament passes the
legislation, unmarried couples who live together can immediately begin to enjoy some
legal protections, such as the same hospital visitation rights as spouses and relatives.
However, Pollastrini said couples would have to live together for at least nine years
before they would be entitled to property rights.

Are you sure this isn't a very bad rehash of the Celine story? She was rumored to be going to law school when she was working as a waitress when he found her in Paris. I think they are mixing stories here but I don't think Celine got that much it was more like 4 or 5 million I thought. Celine is the only women he's lived with longterm and I don't think George would have gotten burned that badly TWICE by a live in situation. Talia was a learning experience on marriage and now he's down on marriage and Celine was also a learning experience (she was common law as was indicated above for over two years I think) and she did walk away with a house, car and money and it's not a stretch to think that she attended law school here during that time or he could have paid off her tuition loans in France when she left with him.
Anything is possible with George but I seriously doubt another "live-in" story apart from Celine because ever since Celine, he's let NO ONE stay longer than a couple of weeks/months at least for as long as I've been following his career.
ahahaha Dexter you beat me to it! You answered while I was typing.

I have (had) a girlfriend who after living with her partner for 12 yerars unmarried got everything he owned when he died last July. His family got nothing. She got his life insurance, car, boat and she's even collecting on his ongoing commissions. As I said she is my ex gf and IMO a complete narcissist. His family really needed that money.

Re: Can we figure this out?
I call BS on the common law marriage thing. The timeframe for common law marriages is usually much longer than 2 years. For example, when TN (where I live) recognized common law the period was more like 7-8 yrs.
I think its entirely possible that he paid someone off to keep them quiet about something. This is Hollyweird that we're talking about. Anything's possible there.

LOL, if this is even true, I'm thinking that this is a misunderstanding of the Celine story.
