Crisis-hit NRA chief Wayne LaPierre calls Donald Trump to tell him NOT to support background checks in wake of mass shootings and warns president it will turn his base against him

By KATELYN CARALLE, U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM
PUBLISHED: 10:36 EDT, 8 August 2019 | UPDATED: 14:20 EDT, 8 August 2019

Wayne LaPierre, the chief executive of the National Rifle Association, warned Donald Trump Tuesday that pushing for background checks would cause him to lose supporters.
Trump and LaPierre spoke this week, officials told The Washington Post, after the president came out in support of background checks for gun purchases following two mass shootings over the weekend.
The NRA chief also argued against legislation that would require universal background checks.
The biggest gun rights advocacy group has been embroiled in financial woes and controversy lately, especially after a report emerged last week that LaPierre sought to use NRA money to buy a $6 million mansion in a gated Dallas-area golf club.

The bill LaPierre railed against to the president, which was already passed in the House, has bipartisan sponsorship in the Senate by Republican Pat Toomey and moderate Democrat Joe Manchin.
After one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history in 2017, the Trump administration passed legislation that strengthened background checks, and after the latest two mass shootings, Trump has come out, again, in support of more strict background checks for firearms purchases.

In the wake of the shootings, Trump has come out in support of strengthening background checks and has spoken with senators about a bill that would impose sweeping checks for almost all firearms purchases
The mass shootings in EL Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, which left 31 dead and dozens of others injured, has caused outcry over government inaction over gun reform.
Trump told reporters Wednesday that there is a 'great appetite for background checks.'
In televised remarks on the shooting Monday, Trump didn't specifically mention that he supported background checks, but did tout the STOP School Violence and Fiz NICS Acts that were passed with bipartisan support last year. The measures included strengthening background checks.
The president spoke with Manchin on Tuesday and outlined concerns the NRa had with the bill, but the West Virginia senator said he never thought gun rights advocacy group would get behind the legislation.
'We talked about that,' Manchin said of the NRA's concerns with the bill. 'I told him, 'we don't expect the NRA to be supportive. Mr. President, in all honesty, when you did the bump stocks, they weren't for you. They were against that, too. You didn't take any hit on that.'

On Wednesday, Trump said the nation has a 'great appetite for background checks'

Senator Joe Mahcin (left), who is co-sponsoring the bill, told Trump he didn't expect LaPierre (right) or the NRA to support the measure
Manchin said Trump was inquisitive during their calls, but the senator told him the needed more Republicans to help get it through the Senate. He also said he told the president he would need to personally back any gun-control legislation or it would fail again.
Trump has been focused on guns since this shootings, and officials say he has even asked his lawyers about what actions he could take through an executive order.
Earlier this year the Trump administration banned bump stocks, which are devices that are used to make semiautomatic rifles mimic machine guns with rapid fire.
Calls for banning these devices gained traction after a shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada in October 2017 where 58 people were killed and hundreds of others injured by a lone gunman.
After the most recent shooting, even Republicans are calling for action on gun legislation – particularly background checks.

'He seems determined to do something and believes there is space to get something done this time around,' Senator Lindsey Graham, who said he's spoken with Trump several times since the shooting, said

+9

Sen. Pat Toomey, who is the other sponsor of the bill, said when speaking to the president he seemed very 'open-minded' about the bill and other potential measures to address gun violence
The universal background check bill was passed in the House in February with only eight Republican votes, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he won't bring any gun control legislation for a vote unless it has widespread GOP support.
The Manchin-Toomey bill would expand background checks to nearly all firearm sales, and even supporters of the measure say it most likely won't pass.
Lindsey Graham, who heads the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he has spoken with the president 'four or five times' since the shootings.
'He seems determined to do something and believes there is space to get something done this time around,' the South Carolina Republican said. 'The president has a pretty common-sense point of view. He's never been a sports or gun enthusiast. But he is more determined than ever to do something on his watch.'
The bill's cosponsor, Toomey, said he has spoken with Trump at least three times in the aftermath of the shootings.
'I will just tell you generally the president is open-minded about this,' The Pennsylvania senator said.

La Pierre tried to use $6 million in NRA funds to purchase a luxury mansion in Texas, claiming following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, he needed a more secure place to live because he was being targeted
The NRA has faced growing scrutiny as mass shootings continue to rattle the nation.
Just last year, LaPierre said he feared he would be targeted after the shooting in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and sought to purchase a luxury mansion with the nonprofit’s funds.
He said he needed a more secure place to live with growing threats.
The NRA’s president was ousted in April after holding the position for only a year.
Oliver North, now the former president of the NRA, allegedly had some internal fighting with LaPierre and was accused of trying to extort the nonprofit’s executive to get him to depart with the NRA.
Democrats are also worried about Republican links to the gun rights advocacy group, especially since the NRA is one of the GOP’s biggest financial supporters.
A Republican strategist said “infighting and accusations”at the NRA will “have an impact in the NRA’s ability to raise money, which would be used in elections to turn out its membership.”
Democrats want to know which Republicans are linked with the group that lobbies against almost any form of gun control regulations or alleged infringements on the Second Amendment.

IMO the people who oppose background checks are people who know they would be denied permission to get a gun - and most of them want guns for reasons that would land them in jail.

Just a few, Lizzy!! Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole - it's a survelliance tool too.

Carol Cadwalladyr is a brilliant journalist and I really admire her for taking this straight to the very tech people sitting there who caused all this - and with any luck will be prosecuted.

She certainly does not do public speaking as a rule -but when you've discovered evidence likes this against 87 million users and know millions has been made from them, know they've been surveilled by them on a personal basis, and given access to the Russians on them, you might just have the guts to do it!

What a brilliant speech from Carol Cadwalladyr!
Her story is an outrage. I wish every American could
watch this speech. What happened in the UK happened in America. Though our government has been sufficiently warned it’s going to happen again in 2020.

Donald & Melania Trump Face Backlash for Holding Baby Orphaned After El Paso Shooting During Visit

The Trumps took a photo with Paul Anchondo, an infant whose parents were killed in the El Paso shooting

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump‘s recent visit to El Paso, Texas, was criticized by some following the tragic Walmart shooting.
During a trip to victims at University Medical Cente, the first couple took a photo with Paul Anchondo, an infant whose parents were killed in the shooting.
Jordan and Andre were shopping for school supplies for their 5-year-old daughter on Aug. 3 when gunfire erupted, Jordan’s aunt Elizabeth Terry told CNN. During the incident, Jordan shielded her baby while Andre shielded his wife, Jordan’s father, Paul Jamrowski, told the Today show.
On Thursday, Mrs. Trump was seen holding the baby, who a senior White House official confirmed to CNN is the son of Jordan Anchondo, 25, and Andre Anchondo, 24. Meanwhile, the president gave a thumbs-up and smiled for the photo op with the baby’s relatives, including the infant’s uncle Tito Anchondo.

Baby Paul’s uncle Tito also told the Associated Press that Trump “was just there to give his condolences and he was just being a human being.” Tito previously told NPR that he and his brother are Trump supporters.
However, many people were not pleased with the president’s thumbs-up pose in the photos.
“This is a photo of Trump grinning while Melania holds a baby orphaned by the shooting. A baby who was taken from home and forced to serve as a prop at a photo-op for the very monster whose hate killed her/his parents,” Democratic strategist Greg Pinelo tweeted in response to the photo. “I would need 280,000 characters to say how furious I am.”

Washington Post columnist Brian Klaas tweeted, “I’ve don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who would think the appropriate response would be flashing a smile and thumbs up. Something is wrong with him.”
WYNC journalist Tanzina Vega added on CNN that there was a “tone-deafness” to Trump’s visits to El Paso and Dayton, Ohio where a second mass shooting occurred this week.
The first lady posted a series of photos from the trip on Twitter, writing, “Met many incredible people in Dayton, Ohio & El Paso, Texas yesterday. Their communities are strong and unbreakable. @potus and I stand with you!”

Meanwhile, a hospital official told CNN’s Jim Acosta that the president acted with “an absence of empathy” during the hospital visit.
According to TIME, Tito did not wish to describe his visit with Trump in further detail, adding that he had received death threats.

Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has issued a stunning rebuke to actor Richard Gere who criticised the country's refusal to let in more than 100 migrants stranded at sea.
Golden Globe winner Richard Gere visited a boat with 121 migrants on board in international waters near the Italian island of Lampedusa.
The Hollywood star was pictured delivering food supplies to the migrants on board, who have been rescued by Spanish NGO Open Arms.

The right-wing League leader Matteo Salvini, whose party topped the polls in the recent European elections, hit back and urged Gere to 'support them in his villas'.
Salvini said: 'Given this generous millionaire is voicing concern for the fate of the Open Arms migrants, we thank him: he can take back to Hollywood, on his private plane, all the people aboard and support them in his villas. Thank you Richard!'
Salvini is tipped by many Italian pollsters to win a possible election which could be called when Italy's parliament returns after recess.

Thanks so much, PAN!
This journalist describes eloquently how it works, and that's something I realize as well: My sister talks about incidents(often with immigrants or refugees) I've either never heard of or very differently. Then I try to find something to verify what she tells me and can't. When I ask her about this, she talks about 'government driven medias that don't tell the fact, and shows me something on facebook. Which is usually something out of context of another incident or a made-up story. Somebody did something bad? This must have been a refugee because Germans would never do this. Rolling Eyes
And it doesn't help much to get along with facts or articles in the newspapers since they have to be fake news...

I had a chat with my nephew (my sister's son) who told me that a museum about mining in our area will be closed. Since I hadn't heard about this (and I do read the newspaper from that area), I asked him where he heard about this, and he said that that was written on facebook "You know, because of these two accidents inside the mine where kids were injured and one was even killed". I just knew about one accident where a few kids climbed a barrier to reach a prohibited area and then fell down. Unfortunately, one girl really was injured seriously and had to stay in hospital quite a while, but "this didn't happen inside the mine but outside. And the other accident where a child was killed because several of them played on a special mining truck (which was forbidden, again!) and released the brakes. So the truck moved forwardsand killed another child, happened in a mining museum hundreds of miles away. These two accidents were definetely awful, but they will find out first what really happened and who's responsible for it" "Oh, I didn't know about this since I read on facebook that they need to close the museum because of these two accidents.""Maybe you should check your sources before spreading those (fake) news." "But they usually write the truth!" "Who, facebook? Everybody can write anything on facebook without checking it!" "Really?"

My kids are more media-savvy that their older, not-handicapped cousin...

Donald Trump offered his first defense of his new policy that cracks down on immigrants on food stamps seeking green cards, arguing tax payers should not have to pay for people to come into the country and 'immediately go on welfare.'
'I'm tired of seeing our taxpayer paying for people to come into the country and immediately go on to welfare and various other things,' the president told reporters in New Jersey where he is spending a few weeks at his Trump National Golf Course Bedminister. 'I think we're doing it right.'
He noted: 'I don't think it's fair to have the American taxpayer. It's about Americans first. It's not fair to have the American taxpayer pay for people to come into the United States.'

Donald Trump offered his first defense of his immigration crack down
The president's new 'public charge' rule, which was announced Monday, has come under fire from immigration advocacy groups and is facing lawsuits from state attorneys general.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi also slammed the policy as 'hateful' and 'bigoted.'
'This hateful, bigoted rule is a direct assault on our nation’s proud heritage as a beacon of hope and opportunity for all and a clear attempt to demonize and terrorize the newcomers who make America more American. It will be swiftly challenged and defeated in the courts,' she wrote on Twitter Tuesday.
And Trump's immigration chief on Tuesday rewrote the words of the famous poem on the Statue of Liberty to include the 'poor who can stand on their own two feet' as he defended the administration's crack down to keep immigrants on food stamps from getting green cards.
Ken Cuccinelli, the acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, was asked during an NPR interview if the words from Emma Lazarus' poem - 'give me your tired, your poor' - were still part of 'the American ethos.'
‘They certainly,' he responded and then changed the words: 'Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge.'

The Lazarus poem was written in 1883 to help raise funds for the statue's base
In 1903, a bronze tablet with the text of Emma Lazarus's sonnet 'The New Colossus'  - which she had written 20 years earlier - was presented by friends of the poet to be added to the Statute of Liberty. It was originally mounted inside the pedestal but today resides in the Statue of Liberty Museum in the base.
Cuccinelli is not the first Trump administration official to put their own spin on the famous words from Lazarus' poem.
White House adviser Stephen Miller, who oversees immigration policy for the president, down played them in an August 2018 exchange with reporters.
'I don't want to get off into a whole thing about history here, but the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of American liberty lighting the world. The poem that you're referring to was added later and is not actually part of the original Statue of Liberty,' he said.
The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886 with Lazarus' poem added 17 years later.  She wrote the sonnet in 1883 to raise funds for the statue's pedestal.

Cuccinelli, in his NPR interview, was defending the president's the new 'public charge' rule that was announced on Monday.
He argued it is a 'privilege' for a migrant to be granted American citizenship and that 'privilege' entails financial independence.
'We invite people to come here and join us as a privilege. No one has a right to become an American who isn’t born here as an American,' he said.
‘It is a privilege to become an American – not a right for anybody who is not already an American citizen,' he added.

The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Cuccinelli argued anyone who wants to become a citizen should be able to support themselves and not to have to avail themselves of government services, which are free to U.S. citizens.
‘That privilege starts with certain expectations and for the last 140 years among those expectations is that the people who come here will not become a burden on the tax payers or the government. Again that doesn’t seem too much to ask as we open our doors currently to more than 1 million new people a year: that they not become a burden on an already, frankly, over-burdened and bankrupt welfare system,' he told NPR.
Cuccinelli announced on Monday the administration will crack down on green cards for immigrants who've spent more than a year on food stamps, Medicaid or other public benefits designated for low-income residents.
That new 'public charge' rule essentially implements a wealth test for those seeking citizenship to ensure immigrants have the financial means to support themselves.
When asked by NPR what immigrants are welcome to the country, Cuccinelli responded: ‘All immigrants who can stand on their own two feet, self-sufficient, pull themselves up by their boot straps – as in the American tradition.’

The new immigration rule would affect those who get food stamps through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
He said immigrants who use legal government services - such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), and most forms of Medicaid - will have that counted against them in their application for a green card.
‘If they don’t have future prospects of being legal permanent residents without welfare that will be counted against them, yes. And that is the point of the rule. It doesn’t seem too much to ask that we have Americans here who aren’t likely to go on welfare and become the historic term “public charge.” This is part of President Trump keeping his promises. This is not new or surprise,' he said.
But, he clarified, since the new rule goes into effect October 15 and only applies going forward, no one will be surprised by it.
‘People will not be surprised backwards in time,’ he said.
Meanwhile, two states are already planning lawsuits against the administration.
New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Tuesday she is suing Trump over his new immigration crack down as it will make 'children go hungry.'
'President Trump's new public charge rule is yet one more example of his Administration turning its back on people fighting to make a better life for them and their families. Under this rule, children will go hungry; families will go without medical care. I am committed to defending all of New York's communities, which is why I intend to sue the Trump Administration over this egregious rule,' James said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.
And California Attorney General Xavier Becerra vowed to 'take legal action' against Trump's new 'public charge' rule.
'This vile rule is the Trump Administration's latest attack on families and lower income communities of color,' he said in a statement.
'It will harm our communities, schools, and workplaces by weaponizing essential healthcare, housing, and nutrition programs. We will not stand idly by while this Administration targets programs that children and families across our state rely upon. We are ready to take legal action to protect the rights of all Californians.'

Critics charge the new policy will result in immigrants not seeking necessary medical services
A 'public charge' typically refers to someone who is 'primarily dependent on the government for subsistence' based on their receipt of 'public cash assistance.'
Trump's new rule, set to go into effect October 15, expands the designation to include those receiving food stamps, housing assistance and/or Medicaid as a negative factor when being evaluated for a green card.
Immigration advocacy groups slammed the new rule.
'This policy denies a permanent, secure future in this country to anyone who isn't white and wealthy,' said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, in a statement.
And there were concerns it would keep immigrants from seeking necessary medical care.
'This final rule serves to further intimidate and frighten families who seek needed services to keep them healthy and productive. Taken together with other looming harmful proposals, these actions will have detrimental consequences on immigrant health and well-being,' said Dr. Julie Linton, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Immigrant Child and Family Health, in a statement.
Cuccinelli said Monday at a briefing at the White House that any 'individual who receives one or more designated public benefits for more than 12 months in the aggregate within any 36 month period' will not be eligible for a green card.
'Our rule generally prevents aliens who are likely to become a public charge from coming to the United States or remaining here and getting a green card,' he stated.

WHAT THE CHANGES TO THE 'PUBLIC CHARGE' RULE MEAN

Low-income migrants living in America who want to become U.S. citizens will face additional hurdles after Oct. 15.
Anyone who has spent a year on food stamp, Medicaid or some other public benefit designed for the needy, is all but certain to be denied a green card.
The rule will state that any 'individual who receives one or more designated public benefits for more than 12 months in the aggregate within any 36 month period' will not be eligible to remain in the United States permanently.
Individuals who take two public benefits will see that time cut in half.
Anyone taking advantage of three government resources that are now restricted must essentially quit the services for three years to be considered for a green card.
Refugees and asylums seekers will not not be affected, nor will human and sex trafficking victims.
An exemption for members of the military and their spouses will also be made.
Participants in the National School Lunch Program or The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) are left alone.
Medical assistance, disaster relief, homeless shelters and Head Start are not counted as public benefits.

It does not include benefits for children and pregnant women like the National School Lunch Program or The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Cuccinelli said.
Medical assistance, disaster relief, homeless shelters and Head Start also are not part of the rule, which has long been a priority for Miller.
Age, health, family status, assets, resources, financial status, education and skills will all be assessed in the application process, Cuccinelli said.
'No one factor alone will decide an applicant's case,' he said of the green cards.
Additionally, migrants that do not meet the qualifications will have the option to adjust their status to that of a Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) through the purchase of a public charge bond that the government plans to sell for a minimum of $8,100 a person, and possibly more, depending on the individual's circumstances.
Cuccinelli insisted that the new rule will 'help promote immigrant success' and 'self-sufficiency' of immigrants seeking to become Americans.
It's that same 'hard-working spirit' that's made the U.S. a beacon, he claimed.
Refugees and asylums seekers will not not be affected, nor will human and sex trafficking victims. An exemption for members of the military and their spouses will also be made.
The administration first signaled that it would seek to adjust the legal definition of a 'public charge' in September 2018 to make the standards for citizenship more rigorous than they had been.
'Congress has never defined the charge public charge in the law,' Cuccinelli said Monday. 'Well that is what changes today with this rule.'
He announced, 'Through the public charge rule, President Trump's administration is reinforcing the ideals of self-sufficiency and personal responsibility. Ensuring that immigrants are able to support themselves and becoming successful in America.'
A White House fact sheet revealed that the administration also plans to use the new rule to keep migrants from ever stepping foot in the country, if the administration decides they're too risky, based on the updated guidance.
'Aliens will be barred from entering the United States if they are found likely to become public charges,' it says. 'Aliens in the United States who are found likely to become public charges will also be barred from adjusting their immigration status.'

PAN - I can't tell you how many things the American people are tired of - not the least of which is the waste of money chauffeuring him around and protecting his fat ass. The one good laugh I got today was a headline that drumpf is whining that he's losing money being president. Good! I hope he goes broke!

At this point most Americans should be outraged and fed up by almost everything that’s going on. But I don’t see it. I don’t think many people even know who are some of the candidates running for President in 2020. If people don’t show their outrage by getting out to the polls and voting for whoever is running against Trump next year then we all will pay the price and be paying for who knows how many more years of golf trips.

Won't everything be thrown at the three states he worked on last time to get the result. .

The way II see it from this side of the pond is that unless the markets crash and the young go out and vote in more numbers than they ever have nothing will change. I hope I'm wrong but Dump has appointed more Republican judges than ever before, there is no paper vote, and gerrymandering seems unabated

Humanity would be extinct without rape and incest: Controversial Republican congressman Steve King makes bizarre claim as he calls for all-out abortion ban

 • Republican congressman from Iowa tells conservative group in Des Moines suburb that world population wouldn't exist without rape or incest

 • 'What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest?' Steve King said

 • Controversial 10-term congressman was immediately condemned by Democratic rival JD Scholten, the GOP conference chair and 2020 Democrats

 • Latest controversial comments come after he was removed from committee positions in Congress by his own party in row over 'white supremacy'

Controversial Republican congressman Steve King claimed Wednesday that 'there would be any population of the world left' if not for rape and incest, as he pitched legislation to outlaw all abortions.
King told a conservative crowd at an event in a suburb of Des Moines, 'What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest?
'Would there be any population of the world left if we did that? Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages that happened throughout all these different nations, I know that I can't certify that I was not a part of a product of that,' he stated at the Iowa event.
The Des Moines Register reports that the Republican added, 'It's not the baby's fault for the sin of the father, or of the mother.'

His comments were quickly condemned by Democrat J.D Scholten, who's vying for his seat in the House of Representatives
The White House did not immediately provide a comment on the latest scandal to hit the Republican who's continued to seek reelection.

His comments were quickly condemned by Democrat J.D. Scholten, who's vying for his seat in the House of Representatives, presidential candidates campaigning in Iowa and the House Republican Conference chairwoman.
Appearing on CNN, Kamala Harris burst into laughter after a clip of King making the offending remarks and then speculating that he's likely a product of rape and incest played out.
'These guys are just out of their minds. Like, what is that?' she said of King, Donald Trump and the Republicans' rhetoric. 'What is going on with these people?'
King's remarks are the latest in a long line of controversies which have made the Republican a virtual outcast from his own party.
He announced in February that he would seek a 10th term, in spite of comments he made on 'white nationalism' that he claims were taken out of context.
'I am running in 2020,' he said at the time and added that: 'I have nothing to apologize for.'
Trump will be on top of the ticket in the upcoming election, and it's unclear what kind of help he'll give King, who must first defeat three Republican primary challengers to win the nomination.
If he does, he will run against Scholten, an attorney, who played baseball in college and pursued a professional career.
He outspent King four-to-one last cycle but the longtime Republican congressman, who was then close to President Trump, prevailed in their match-up.

Scholten rebuked King on Wednesday on Twitter, telling him, 'Words have consequences.'

He turned the gaffe as an opportunity to generate money for his latest congressional campaign.

'To answer[King's] question, yes,' he said of the plausibility of births outside of rape and incest. 'Our congressman continues to push his selfish agenda above the needs of #IA04 -- this time he excuses violence. This isn’t what we stand for. Help us spread our message of positive change.'

Nearly every 2020 presidential candidate followed suit, lambasting King and fishing for contributions for Scholten.
'All IA-04 constituents—including women—deserve a leader who will fight for them. Donate to JD Scholten to help make that happen,' said New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who linked to a page documenting her own contribution.
Julian Castro said that 'Steve King has no place in Congress. Time and time again, he has embarrassed himself and denigrated his office' and pledged to help elect Scholten.
'I’m ready for another Winnebago road trip—it’s time to unseat this bigot,' said the former Housing and Urban Development secretary said.
Harris also promoted Scholten's candidacy, saying, 'Rape apologists have no place in Congress. Iowans deserve better than Steve King. Donate now to his opponent.'
Elizabeth Warren backed Scholten and said King's comment is a 'disgusting attack' sexual assault victims and the Iowa congressman 'must resign.'
Iowa Democratic Representative Abby Finkenauer said in a tweet that King is an 'embarrassment' to all of Iowa and the state's Washington delegation.
'This is incredibly cruel & disrespectful to survivors. Steve King & his values, his rhetoric, & his disdain for decency is a far cry from the Iowa I know. He doesn’t represent who we are & he continues to be an embarrassment to our state & federal delegation,' she tweeted.
GOP leader Liz Cheney was one of the few Republicans to speak out against King in the immediate aftermath of his remarks.
'Today’s comments by [Steve King] are appalling and bizarre. As I’ve said before, it’s time for him to go. The people of Iowa’s 4th congressional district deserve better,' she said.
Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican in the House, also condemned King.
In an interview on 'Special Report' on Fox News, he said, 'I have a great deal of problems with that. This isn’t the first time I’ve had concerns of what Steve King has said. Earlier in this Congress, there are things that Steve King said that I do not believe the party of Lincoln would stand for.
'We actually removed Steve King from his committees inside Congress, and I think this just continues to show why that action was taken,' he said.
Donald Trump had been tweeting about a stock market plunge, but remained silent on King's statement as Wednesday wore on. His White House did provide a comment, in response to a request for comment from DailyMail.com.
Iowa will be a must-stop in the presidential campaign race but King wasn't allowed to travel on Air Force One with the president earlier this year when Trump traveled to Iowa for a party fundraiser, CNN reported at the time.
King was widely condemned by politicians from both parties following comments that appeared in a January New York Times article.
His words were condemned on the House floor.  Republicans also removed him from all his committee assignments, which rendered him essentially powerless in Congress.
King joined in supporting the House-passed motion of disapproval following his comments. It passed 424 to 1.
'White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?' King was quoted as saying in The Times.
The congressman claimed the Times purposely misquoted him and demanded, unsuccessfully, any records the newspaper has of his remarks.
King claims he took a lengthy pause before he said 'Western civilization' – meaning that he was defending only that phrase.
His office has circulated the results of news archive searches showing he had never been quoted uttering the phrases 'white nationalism,' 'white nationalist,' 'white supremacist' or 'white supremacy' before, claiming he was repeating language an aggressive Times reporter fed to him.

Democrat J.D. Scholten who is running against King condemned his remarks
He went along with a resolution condemning the remarks when it came to a vote before the full House, avoiding a formal censure from his colleagues.
In October 2018, King was put in the position of defending his association with a far-right, Nazi-linked group in Austria.
King said, 'So I want to ask my colleagues on both sides of the aisle let's vote for this resolution. I'm putting up a yes on the board here because what you say is true, is right and is just.'
It wasn't the first time King came under fire for statements with racial undertones.
In October 2018, King was put in the position of having to defend his association with a far-right, Nazi-linked group in Austria.
'If they were in America pushing the platform that they push, they would be Republicans,' King told The Washington Post
He was referring to Austria’s Freedom Party, a group founded by a former Nazi SS officer and whose current leader was active in neo-Nazi circles.

Donnamarie - He's still serving because he's anti-abortion and that's all drumpf's base cares about. He's probably right about being the product of rape and incest. That could explain a lot about him.

Shocking footage shows a man believed to be a corrections officer driving into a group of anti-ICE protesters who were sitting outside a detention facility in Rhode Island.
The protesters were sitting on the pavement to block staff from parking at Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility, which works with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), when a black pickup truck barreled towards them.
At around 10 pm on Wednesday night, a black pickup truck drove slowly up to a group of roughly 40-50 protesters blocking the entrance to the location's parking lot.

The driver then went straight through crowd as people scream in the background and jump onto the back of the vehicle in an attempt to stop it.

Corrections officers subsequently came running outside and asked people to back away from the vehicle.
They then began pepper spraying protesters including a reporter with WLNE. A spokesman for Never Again Action told DailyMail.com that five people taken to the hospital, two with injuries related to the truck and three who were treated for the effects of pepper spray.
The spokesman added: ' The driver called for backup on a handheld walkie talkie and was wearing the Captain’s version of the uniform the other guards were wearing, and he was driving to the employee parking lot.'
Rhode Island Governor  expressed her 'outrage' that a peaceful protest against immigration policies at the Wyatt Detention Center was interrupted and people were hurt.

She said she had contacted the State Police Commander and both were committed to a 'full investigation'  of the events.
She said: 'I share the outrage Rhode Islanders are feeling about the incident depicted in the video at the Wyatt Detention Center.
'Our state and our nation were built on the idea that everyone has a right to express their opinion publicly and peacefully.'
'President Trump’s immigration policies are immoral, and these Rhode Islanders were exercising their constitutional right to protest,' the governor added.

People are heard screaming in the background as the pick-up truck barrels towards them
James Diossa, the Mayor of Rhode Island said he spoke to Attorney General Peter Neronha and Colonel James M. Manni who will conduct an investigation into the incident.
He tweeted: 'Their orgs will join the CFPD in investigating last night’s disturbing incident between Wyatt staff and protesters outside of the Wyatt Detention Facility. I appreciate their collaboration in ensuring a transparent investigation.'
Other protesters are heard shouting: 'The whole world is watching,' a phrase which was widely used during the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago when police attacked Vietnam War protesters.
A woman can also be heard saying: 'I got pepper sprayed, please help me.'
Never Again Action, a Jewish protest group with organized the demonstration, posted the footage with the caption: 'Here is HD video of an ICE guard driving his truck into us as we sat peacefully blocking the Wyatt Detention Center.'
However WLNE reported that the driver was a corrections officer from the center and appeared to be uniformed and had a badge.

Guards then emitted pepper spray on the assembled protesters in an attempt to disperse them
In an earlier Tweet at the time of the incident, the group claimed: 'Oh my god. An ICE Detention Center guard just drove their truck straight through a line of us sitting peacefully to block the parking lot.
'There don’t appear to be major injuries, still assessing the situation, police are moving in *on us* now.'
There were roughly 400 protesters present from the group, which likens undocumented immigrants being imprisoned to the treatment of Jews during the Holocaust.
The group has been organizing protests outside ICE detention centers since the end of July.
'It's just unbelievable. It was just absolutely unbelievable,' said protester Jerry Belair, who was hit by the truck. 'This guy just charged and tried to injure people purposely.'

James Diossa, the Mayor of Rhode Island, tweeted that an investigation has been launched
Amy Anthony, a spokesman for Never Again Action, a Jewish activist group that planned the protest, told The Washington Post: 'It was terrifying because we didn’t know what exactly his intention was.
'It certainly appeared he was trying to hit us.'
US Immigration and Customers Enforcement have not yet responded to DailyMail.com for a comment, while attempts to reach the Wyatt Detention Facility were unsuccessful.
The confrontation comes amid a series of protests calling on Immigration and Customs Enforcement to bring a halt to their raids on undocumented migrants.
Around 100 people were arrested on Saturday during an anti-ICE protest in Manhattan which closed down part of the West Side Highway and caused traffic gridlock.
Many protesters sat on the street as they linked one another and held placards reading 'Abolish ICE' and 'Close the camps.'

Correction guards from the center asked people to step away from the vehicle and then reportedly used pepper spray moments which sent people running from the area
ICE is largely the body which removes illegal immigrants during deportations, while CBP carry out arrests at the border.
Last month, protesters went to a migrant detention center in Colorado and took down the state's flag and the U.S. flag before hoisting up a Mexican flag and a defaced Blue Lives Matter flag in their place.
Last month U.S. authorities launched small-scale operations seeking to arrest undocumented immigrants in an apparent start to President Donald Trump's vow to launch mass deportation round-ups across the United States.
The operation was expected to target hundreds of recently arrived families in about 10 cities who had been ordered deported by an immigration judge.
The removal operations are meant to deter a surge in Central American families fleeing poverty and gang violence in their home countries, with many seeking asylum in the United States.
'We are doing targeted enforcement actions against specific individuals who have had their day in immigration court and have been ordered removed by an immigration judge,' Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Matt Albence told Fox News when asked for an update.
Immigration rights activists have said that in many cases immigrants do not receive proper notice of their court dates.

Donald Trump has spoken out in praise of a lawmaker who called Hillary Clinton 'a piece of garbage' and said she should be 'shot for treason'.
The US President was speaking in front of hundreds at a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire on Thursday when he acknowledged the dedication of state representative Al Baldasaro.
He said Mr Baldasaro made it to 'every rally I ever gave in New Hampshire'.
'Right from the beginning. I got so tired of looking at him; he'd always be here,' Trump said.

In 2016 Al Baldasaro said: 'Hillary Clinton should be put in the firing line and shot for treason'. He's a staunch support of the Trump administration
The former marine had acted as an informal adviser on veteran affairs during Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
That same year he appeared on a Boston radio show and sparked controversy as he accused Ms Clinton of 'betraying her country' in the events preceding and following the 2012 terror attacks in Benghazi, Libya.
'This whole thing disgusts me,' he said. 'Hillary Clinton should be put in the firing line and shot for treason.'
A US ambassador and three other Americans were killed when militants attacked a diplomatic compound in September 2012. It later emerged, the state department, led at the time by Hillary Clinton had refused requests to implement additional security at the compound.
Mr Baldasaro, a retired US Marine first sergeant, continued to berate Ms Clinton's actions as secretary of state.
'Hillary Clinton to me is the Jane Fonda of the Vietnam. She is a disgrace for the lies that she told those mothers about their children that got killed over there in Benghazi. She dropped the ball on over 400 emails requesting back up security. Something's wrong there.'
Ms Clinton, had during her time as secretary of state, also been criticized after an examination of her server found over 100 emails containing classified information, including a number deemed secret and top secret on a private server.
Mr Baldasaro said exposing national secrets on her private email server was another qualifier for the death penalty.
'As far as I'm concerned, it is treason and the penalty for treason is the firing squad ― or maybe it's the electric chair now.'
Despite the criticism he drew, Mr Baldasaro stood by his comments saying freedom of speech gave him the liberty to air his opinion.

As a former first lady, Clinton has U.S. Secret Service protection for life, and following Mr Baldasaro's comments it confirmed it would 'conduct the appropriate investigation'.
At the time, Trump's office said while it did not stand by the comments made by the veteran, his support remained welcome.
And, as was evidenced in Trump's address on Thursday, and the Southern New Hampshire University, Mr Baldasaro remained a welcome supporter of his administration.
As well as thanking him for his unwavering loyalty, the president added that Mr Baldasaro's apparent recovery and successful treatment for cancer were a testament to recent changes to the Veterans Choice Program.
The program, created in 2014 under former President Barack Obama's administration, was created to enable veterans to access government-funded private-health care if they would otherwise face lengthy travel and/or wait times.
In June, last year Trump signed a law that reformed and consolidated the program into a single Veterans Community Care Program.

President Trump pokes fun at his Democrat opponents during rally

L

At the rally, on Thursday, which drew hundreds of supporters, Trump revved up the crowds with his own attacks on his Democratic rivals for the presidency.
He lashed out at his opponents, calling Elizabeth Warren, 'Pocahontas,' and calling former vice president Joe Biden, 'sleepy'.
'What about a Sleepy Joe Biden rally? Right? Boy, he's made some beauties. I sort of hope it's him. I don't mind any of them. You got Pocahontas, who's rising. You've got Kamala. Kamala is falling. You got Beto. Beto is like gone,' he said, whirling his finger in the air to signal that O'Rourke, who's called him a white supremacist, is unhinged.
New Hampshire, where the rally was held, is regarded by Trump and his advisers as another battleground state in the 2020 general election.
While Ms Clinton won New Hampshire in 2016 the president is clearly making a play to turn it red in the next election and seeking to establish his support with the state's Republican voters.
However, his polling numbers in New Hampshire would indicate that the president will have an uphill climb winning the state in 2020.
He lost to Ms Clinton by about 2,700 votes in 2016, and the state has shown over the years that it's no pushover for either party.
An August University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll found that 42 per cent of New Hampshire adults approve of Trump while 53 per cent disapprove. The poll also showed that 49 per cent approve of Trump's handling of the economy and 44 per cent disapprove.
New Hampshire's four Electoral College votes are far below those of key swing states like Florida, Wisconsin and Michigan, but its influence can prove powerful in close election years.
New Hampshire is doing well economically, at least when using broad measures. But beneath the top-line data are clear signs that the prosperity is being unevenly shared, and when the tumult of the Trump presidency is added to the mix, the state's flinty voters may not be receptive to his appeals.

The internet has been flooded with hilarious memes, after it was revealed President Donald Trump is eyeing up the island of Greenland.
Two sources told the Wall Street Journal that Trump has repeatedly asked his advisers with 'varying degrees of seriousness' if it would be possible for the U.S. to acquire the autonomous Danish territory for its resources and geopolitical significance.
It's unclear how exactly the US would go about buying the largest island in the world following previous unsuccessful attempts by the US in 1946 and 1867.
'What do you guys think about that?' Trump asked a table of associates last spring when the idea of buying the island first came to be, a source told the Wall Street Journal. 'Do you think it would work?'

Twitter users have had a field day at the news.

A former national press secretary to Hillary Clinton jokingly compared it to Trump's bold campaign promise that Mexico would pay for a border wall.
'Donald Trump is going to buy Greenland and Mexico is going to pay for it,' wrote  Jesse Ferguson.
Meanwhile writer Jon Gabriel posted an image of a town in Greenland with a huge golden Trump Tower photoshopped in, with the caption: 'Greenland in 10 years.'
One confused Twitter user questioned: 'We...might be buying Greenland?' while another posted a meme with the caption: 'Me seeing Greenland trending. "I wonder what this is abou..."'
One Twitter user wrote alongside a meme of Homer Simpson slowly retreating into a bush: 'BREAKING NEWS: Denmark to relocate Greenland in undisclosed location due to safety concerns.'

The 811,000-square-mile island of icy terrain in the Atlantic inhabits about 56,000 people, and though it is technically in North American waters, the self-governing land is culturally European.
Its foreign and security policy is handled by Copenhagen.
According to the Journal, Greenland relies on $591 million of subsidies from Denmark annually, which make up about 60% of its annual budget.
Trump is visiting Denmark in September.
A person told DailyMail.com that's not why Trump is traveling to Denmark, however. He's visiting the allied nation because he was invited. The person suggested the purchase came up in the context of the visit.

Greenland: The largest island in the world

Greenland is 811,000-square-miles - roughly the size of Western Europe and the largest island in the world.
The Danish autonomous territory is located between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans.
Around 80% of the land is permanently covered by one huge ice caps - the Inland Ice/The Greenland Ice sheet.
This icy terrain in inhabits about 56,000, with 90% living in 16 towns and the rest in small settlement. The majority live in the lower part of West Greenland, while a small portion lives in the northern Thule area.
The official language is Greenlandic - closely related to languages spoken by Inuit in Canada and Alaska. Danish and English are spoken as second languages.

He's likely to speak to Johnson about repatriating British citizens captured in former ISIS territories. British Jihadi wife Shamima Begum is pictured here with her son Jerah in Al Hawl camp for captured ISIS wives in children
The jihadis, their wives and children are all held in territory in Iraq and Syria held by U.S. allies, with American military aiding their detention. Among them are two of the ‘Beatles,’ the British citizens turned ISIS killers who beheaded American hostages in gruesome videos.

One source familiar with the push to get the jihadis repatriated from what is effectively U.S.-controlled territory said that it was causing tensions with European capitals but framed it as the result of those countries’ immigration policies – a point unlikely to be agreed with by European leaders.
‘That's going to cause some difficulties. They’re not going to be happy about that. But you get the jihadis you invite in sometimes, and now you have to learn to deal with them,' the person said of Donald Trump's push to get rid of them.

The person said the U.S. government has been pushing America's allies to take the fighters in for nearly two years, with no success at all.
'It’s more exploratory than operational,' the person said of the discussions, acknowledging the lack of progress.
The total number of foreign fighters captured in Syria and Iraq is unclear.
Trump told journalists at a Marine One departure on the South Lawn at the beginning of August that the coalition against ISIS had captured more than 10,000 jihadis in Iraq and Syria.
Many are from Middle Eastern countries but many hundreds are believed to have come from European countries. Trump claimed there were 2,500 from Europe.
The Syrian Democratic Forces, who are allied with the U.S., were alone holding around 800 European jihadis earlier this month, The Independent reported.
'We have 2,500 ISIS fighters that we want Europe to take because they were going back into Europe — into France, into Germany, into various places,' he said.
Trump has publicly floated the idea that the jihadis could simply be released.
The person familiar with the discussions acknowledged that such a move was unlikely.
Not only do international treaties and obligations prevent President Donald Trump from doing so, the person said, fighters are likely to return to extremist cells if they are released from government custody.
'I just don’t think there’s any way, ' the person said. 'The Europeans could just say no.'

On top of those who fought for ISIS are their wives and children. Already one of the ISIS brides - Shamima Begum – has been stripped of British citizenship. She fled Britain aged just 15 to marry a jihadi and is now 19, and stranded in a camp in Syria effectively without a state.
The largest camp, al-Hol, has 11,000 people in it, most of them civilian women and children.
The issue adds to the list of potential flashpoints with European leaders like trade and tariffs at the G7, which is made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the U.S.
Trump has been publicly critical of France’s president, Macron, and Germany’s chancellor, Merkel, while praising the UK’s Johnson and Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte.
Additionally, the UK is at odds with the other three European countries over leaving the European Union.
All four countries acknowledge that citizens or residents who left for ISIS territory to take part in the jihad or to marry men who were should be punished.
ISIS brides are a problem in particular. Trump's administration has contended that one woman, Hoda Muthana, who was born in America isn't a citizen, because her father originally came to the country as a diplomat.

President Trump has said he could release other terrorist sympathizers and fighters into Europe and suggested in early August that a plan was in the works.
Trump told journalists at a Marine One departure on the South Lawn that he could drop detainees on European countries' doorsteps.
'We have thousands of ISIS fighters that we want Europe to take, and let’s see if they take them,' he said. 'If they don’t take them, we’ll probably have to release them to Europe.'
The source familiar with the conversations said that the U.S. is actively seeking assistance from regional allies, as well.
'There are discussions under way. Those discussions are happening, And they’re happening I think more driven by Iraq and Syria and what to do about them, starting with the ISIS wives. A lot of discussion of what category those people fall into,' the person said.
Since 2008, the U.S. has not shipped detainees to Guantanamo Bay, the prison it maintains at a naval base off the coast of Cuba.
Trump once said he'd like to 'load it up with bad dudes' but he never followed through.
Barack Obama drove down the number of detainees in U.S. custody through repatriation deals. Just 40 terror suspects are now held at the site.

Workers at Shell's new $6 billion plant 'were told they wouldn't get PAID if they didn't attend a Trump speech' and 'were ordered not to protest during the event'

 • President Trump gave a speech at Shell's new $6 billion plant in Beaver County, Pennsylvania on Tuesday

 • The Commander-in-chief received a rousing reception from hundreds of employees as he proclaimed that blue-collar industries were thriving

 • However, a new report claims workers were required to attend Trump's speech or stay home and not get paid

 • Additionally, employees were allegedly told that they would not be able to protest at the event

 • During his speech, Trump took credit for the soon-to-be completed plant, even though it was initially approved by the Obama administration in 2016

Union workers at a new $6 billion Shell construction in Pennsylvania were reportedly told they would have to take a day off without pay if they didn't show up to President Trump's Tuesday speech at the petrochemical plant.
The bombshell claims were made by The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Friday, three days after Trump's event at the facility in Beaver County.
On Monday, workers were sent a memo claiming that attendance at the rally was 'not mandatory' but, according to the publication, 'only those who showed up at 7am, scanned their ID cards, and were prepared to stand for hours would be paid'.
One Shell supervisor purportedly wrote to one of his contractors less than 24 hours out from the rally: 'NO SCAN, NO PAY'.

The paper further reported that those who skipped Trump's Tuesday rally would also fail to qualify for weekly overtime, meaning they missed out on the time-and-a-half hourly rates that usually applies on Fridays.
Meanwhile, the publication also claims that any 'resistance' during Trump's speech would not be tolerated.
One contractor's talking points - which were used to prepare employees for the President's visit - reportedly read: 'No yelling, shouting, protesting or anything viewed as resistance will be tolerated at the event.
An underlying theme of the event is to promote good will from the unions. Your building trades leaders and jobs stewards have agreed to this.'

Trump touted his Tuesday visit to the Pennsylvania plant as a roaring success.
Surrounded by dozens of cheering employees clad in hi-vis vests, the optics of the event helped hone his image as a champion of blue-collar workers and Rust Belt industries.
'Factory floors across this land are once more crackling with life,' Trump proclaimed to the Shell employees while on the stage.
'Our steel mills are fired up and blazing bright. The assembly lines are roaring.'
The President flipped several Rust Belt states - including Pennsylvania - from blue to red in 2016, and he is hoping to keep them that way in 2020.

The speech comes just weeks after Trump kicked off his re-election campaign, and as Democratic hopefuls struggle to appeal to workers across the Midwest.
'I don't think they [Democratic contenders] give a damn about Western Pennsylvania, do you?' Trump asked the crowd.

During his speech, the President also took credit for the $6 billion plant, saying: 'This would have never happened without me and us.'
However, the plant was initially approved in June 2016, during the Obama administration.

When I was a kid we lived in Pittsburgh and my mom worked for the UMW (United Mine Workers' Union). Between the miners and the steel workers Pennsylvania was a strong union state. "Show up or lose pay" would never have been tolerated.

The NRA's top lobbyist in Florida has implied that children would be disappointed if they did not get guns for their birthdays in her opposition to a proposed weapons ban.
Marion Hammer is considered an influential gun lobbyists and is currently leading the charge against a proposal to place a constitutional amendment on the Florida ballot in 2020 to ban assault weapons.
Hammer, 80, addressed the issue at a meeting of Florida economists on Friday.
The Tampa Bay Times Times reported her as saying: 'How do you tell a 10-year-old little girl who got with a pink stock for her birthday that her rifle is an assault weapon and she has to turn it over to government or be arrested for felony possession?.'

Marion Hammer, (pictured), an NRA lobbyist in Florida, implied that children would be disappointed if they did not get guns for their birthdays in her opposition to a proposed weapons ban
She spoke for the first time since two gun-related massacres in El Paso and Dayton occurred on the same day two weeks ago.

The amendment would ban the sale of assault rifles in Florida in the future and current owners would have to either register them with the state or give them up, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
She argued the proposed amendment will not protect major gun manufacturers in the state, which produce weapons that would be outlawed by the ban.
'If I were the owner of one of these firearm manufacturing companies, I wouldn’t wait to see what voters do. If this were allowed to go on the ballot, I’d say, "I’m outta here".'

Hammer was the first female president of the National Rifle Association and in a profile the New Yorker wrote that she carries a handgun in her purse.
'Her policies have elevated Florida's gun owners to a uniquely privileged status, and made the public carrying of firearms a fact of daily life in the state,' The New Yorker wrote about Hammer in 2018.
The amendment has to pass several obstacles before it can go before voters in 2020, including passing a legal review by the state Supreme Court.
It was reported last month that Attorney General Ashley Moody asked the state Supreme Court to disqualify a proposed ballot measure seeking to ban assault weapons, saying the measure goes too far in outlawing the possession of all semi-automatic long guns.

Massive student protests across the country reshaped the U.S. debate on firearms after Nickolas Cruz, a former student at the Parkland school, was charged with killing 17 people with a semiautomatic rifle in a five-and-a-half-minute shooting spree at the school on February 14, 2018.
Twenty states passed some form of gun regulation last year, including nine states with a Republican governor, according to the gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety.
Florida, one of the most gun-friendly states in the country, quickly imposed a three-day waiting period for gun purchases and raised the age limit for buying rifles from 18 to 21.

Meanwhile, the Democratic-led U.S. House Judiciary Committee said on Friday it will cut short its summer recess and meet in September to consider new gun control legislation in response to back-to-back mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.
The panel will prepare a series of bills for consideration by the full House of Representatives.
It will also include a measure to prevent people convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes from purchasing firearms and a "red flag" bill to deny guns to those deemed to be a danger to themselves and others.
Lawmakers will also hold a September 25 hearing on military-style assault weapons.
'El Pasoans want action and Congress has the power to end this horror,' Representative Veronica Escobar said on Twitter. Escobar is a committee member whose district was stricken by an Aug. 3 mass shooting at a Walmart store, where a lone gunman with a military-style rifle killed 22 people.
The shootings in El Paso and Dayton killed a total of 31 people and propelled the wide availability of guns in the United States back to the forefront of political debate.
'For far too long, politicians in Washington have only offered thoughts and prayers in the wake of gun violence tragedies.
'Thoughts and prayers have never been enough. To keep our communities safe, we must act,' Democratic Chairman Jerrold Nadler said in a statement.

Donald Trump said on the eve of the annual Group of Seven summit that it would be 'appropriate' for Russia to retake its seat at the table with the world's most advanced economies.
He claimed Tuesday that Barack Obama kicked Moscow out, because Vladimir Putin'outsmarted him,' and not because Russia invaded and seized the Crimean Peninsula and refused to return it to Ukraine.
'It was the G8 for a long time, and now it's the G7. And a lot of the time we talk about, we talk about Russia, Russia — because I've been to numerous G7 meetings,' the sitting U.S. president revealed. 'And I guess President Obama because Putin outsmarted him.'

Donald Trump said on the eve of the annual Group of Seven summit that it would be 'appropriate' for Russia to retake its seat at the table with the world's most advanced economies
World leaders booted Russia from the club that was once known as the G8 in 2014. A statement on behalf of the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, the UK and Japan explicitly cited Russia's incursion into Ukraine.

Trump has said since 2018 that Russia should be readmitted, although he's received limited backing from the organization's other member governments, and Russia has indicated that it doesn't have a strong desire to rejoin.
He revisited the topic as he prepared on Tuesday to travel to Biarritz over the weekend for the yearly conference, where he'll meet with Boris Johnson for the first time since the like-minded conservative's party elevated him to prime minister.
Trump said that he'd be 'disposed' to allow Russia to rejoin the group if 'somebody' made a motion within the group.
'President Obama thought it wasn't a good thing to have Russia in, and so, he wanted Russia out. But I think it's much more appropriate to have Russia in, particularly the G8, because a lot of things we talk about have to do with Russia,' he argued.
Trump said, 'So, I can certainly see it being the G8 again, if somebody would take that motion, I would certainly be disposed to think about very favorably.'
He claimed for a second time that Obama was the one who orchestrated Putin's removal.
'But as you know, for most of the time, it was the G8 It included Russia, and President Obama didn't want Russia in because he got outsmarted. Well, that's not the way it really should work,' he added.
Member countries were in agreement in 2014 that Russia's involvement in multinational talks should be halted until it respected neighbor nations' sovereignty.
'International law prohibits the acquisition of part or all of another state's territory through coercion or force,' a joint statement said. 'To do so violates the principles upon which the international system is built. We condemn the illegal referendum held in Crimea in violation of Ukraine's constitution.'
Russia's foreign minister said in a scathing response it was 'not attached' to the group and 'we don't see a great misfortune' to be left out of future discussions.
'G8 is an informal organization that does not give out any membership cards and, by its definition, cannot remove anyone,' said top diplomat Sergey Lavrov at a news conference. 'All the economic and financial questions are decided in G20, and G8 has the purpose of existence as the forum of dialogue between the leading Western countries and Russia.'

Trump made the comments as he met with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis at the White House
Leadership has turned over in several G7 countries, including the U.S., UK and France, since the countries punished Russia for the use of force in Crimea.
Economic sanctions remain on the nation, however, that was allowed to retain its seat on the United Nations' Security Council.
Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov wasn't enormously enthused in 2018 when Trump floated a return for Russia to the G8.
'Russia is focused on other formats, apart from the G7,' Peskov said via state media outlet Sputnik, using the informal organization's group's current name.
Trump coincidentally lost the only vocal backer of the suggestion on Tuesday with the resignation of Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
Conte said last year that including Russia is 'in the interests of everyone,' seconding Trump's proposal in a tweet. But Conte announced rump was in the Oval Office meeting with Romania's president.

Trump cancels Denmark trip after PM says Greenland isn't for sale

Trump had expressed interest in buying Greenland, a Danish territory.

Aug. 21, 2019, 2:07 AM GMT+2 / Updated Aug. 21, 2019, 1:12 PM GMT+2

By Dareh Gregorian

President Donald Trump is calling off an upcoming trip to Denmark after its prime minister rebuffed his interest in buying Greenland, a Danish territory, the White House announced on Tuesday.

"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," Trump tweeted. "The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!"

Trump was invited on an official state visit by the Queen of Denmark. White House Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere confirmed that the entire trip was cancelled.

Trump mused about acquiring Greenland from Denmark on Sunday, telling reporters that “it's something we talked about."
Denmark essentially owns it, we're very good allies with Denmark," he said. "Strategically it's interesting and we'd be interested, but we'll talk to them a little bit."

But, he added, "first we have to find out whether or not they have any interest."

Frederiksen said they did not.

"Greenland is not for sale," she told Greenlandish media on Sunday. "Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously."

Danes reacted with surprise and anger after Trump cancelled his trip. One Danish politician called on the president to show more respect."

Rasmus Jarlov@RasmusJarlov

As a Dane (and a conservative) it is very hard to believe. For no reason Trump assumes that (an autonomous) part of our country is for sale. Then insultingly cancels visit that everybody was preparing for.

Are parts of the US for sale? Alaska?

Please show more respect.

1,595

Another called the cancellation a "disrespectful and almost childish reaction."

Technically a part of North America, Greenland is between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, and between Canada and Europe. It’s an autonomous Danish territory with a population of more than 50,000 and has natural resources such as coal and uranium.

Kim Kielsen, Greenland's premier, said in a statement that the island "is not for sale and cannot be sold, but Greenland is open for trade and cooperation with other countries — including the United States.”

Trump’s abrupt cancellation of the visit came as a surprise, since the White House initially described the trip as unrelated to Trump’s Greenland aspirations. He told reporters on Sunday, that, "we're going to Poland and then we may be going to Denmark — not for this reason at all. But we're looking at it."

Trump accuses Jewish Americans of ‘disloyalty’ for voting Democratic, in antisemitic trope

President’s remarks seemed to refer to a perception that Jewish Americans have a dual loyalty to both America and Israel

Edward Helmore

Tue 20 Aug 2019 23.57 BSTLast modified on Wed 21 Aug 2019 12.59 BST

Donald Trump used an apparently antisemitic trope when accusing Jewish Americans who vote for Democrats as showing “either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty”.

The remarks came as part of a barrage of disparaging comments that threaten to re-ignite an ongoing feud with the Democratic congresswomen Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. They seemed to refer to a perception that Jewish Americans have a dual loyalty to both America and Israel.

Trump, who recently encouraged Israel to block Tlaib’s visit to see her family in the occupied territories, lashed out after the congresswomen criticized Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for denying them entry, vowing that the Israeli leader would not “succeed in hiding the cruel reality of the occupation from us”.

Calling Omar a “disaster” for Jews, Trump said he didn’t “buy” the tears Tlaib had shed Monday at an emotional press conference during which Tlaib talked about her decision not to travel to Israel to see her elderly grandmother, who lives in the occupied West Bank.

“Where has the Democratic party gone?” Trump asked reporters at the White House. He then went on to apparently refer to Jewish Americans’ supposed loyalties to Israel and how voting Democratic was disloyal to the country. “Where have they gone, where they’re defending these two people over the state of Israel? And I think any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.”

Accusing Jewish Americans of having dual loyalties to America and Israel is widely seen as an antisemitic trope. The comment provoked immediate condemnation from a raft of American Jewish leaders.

Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League, pointed out on Twitter that charges of disloyalty “have long been used to attack Jews … It’s long overdue to stop using Jews as a political football”.

J Street, the progressive Jewish American lobbying group, released a statement in which it called Trump’s remarks “dangerous and shameful”. It noted that 70% of American Jews voted for Hillary Clinton against Trump in the 2016 presidential race, adding “this vast majority of our community rejected and continues to abhor the xenophobia, bigotry and extremism of Donald Trump and his allies”.

Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont who is a leading contender for the 2020 Democratic nomination, also waded in. Calling himself “a proud Jewish person”, he said: “I have no concerns about voting Democratic. And in fact I intend to vote for a Jewish man to become the next president of the United States.”

This is not the first time that Trump has been castigated for invoking the “dual loyalty” antisemitic trope. In April he called Netanyahu “your prime minister” in front of the annual meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas.

President Donald Trump tweeted out unrestrained praise of himself Wednesday by a conservative radio host who said Israeli Jews revere him 'like he is the second coming of God.'
The president blasted out the praise of him just hours after he set off a furor by saying any American Jews who vote for Democrats are 'disloyal' – drawing howls of protest from Jewish groups who said the comments resurrected 'dual loyalty' tropes.
“Thank you to Wayne Allyn Root for the very nice words,' Trump began, quoting the author and host who has promoted conspiracies about President Barack Obama and other topics.

Donald Trump sparked fury on Tuesday when he said Jewish voters were disloyal if they voted Democrat. On Wednesday he quoted conservative conspiracy theorist Wayne Allyn Root who said Israeli Jews revere him like he is the 'second coming of God'
'President Trump is the greatest President for Jews and for Israel in the history of the world, not just America, he is the best President for Israel in the history of the world...and the Jewish people in Israel love him...like he’s the King of Israel,' Trump's tweet continued.

'They love him like he is the second coming of God...But American Jews don’t know him or like him. They don’t even know what they’re doing or saying anymore. It makes no sense! But that’s OK, if he keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s good for...all Jews, Blacks, Gays, everyone. And importantly, he’s good for everyone in America who wants a job,' Trump continued, quoting Root.
Then the president added: 'Wow!,' and attached the Twitter handles of favorite outlets NewsMax, Fox and Friends, and OAN.

Trump blasted out the praise after critics decried the president for weaponizing anti-Semitism and exercising the offensive trope that questions the loyalty of Jewish citizens.
His heated tirade questioning Jewish Democrats comes as an attack on liberal 'Squad' members Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar after they were barred from entering Israel for their outspoken support of boycotts against the nation and support of Palestine.
In his heated Oval Office remarks Tuesday, Trump said: 'I think any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or a great disloyalty.'

'Five years ago, the concept of even talking about this - even three years ago - of cutting off aid to Israel because of two people that hate Israel and hate Jewish people - I can't believe we're even having this conversation.'
'Where has the Democratic Party gone? Where have they gone where they are defending these two people over the state of Israel?' he added, alluding that Jewish people who vote for Democrats are anti-Israel.
Trump has also called squad members the 'face' of the Democratic party.

Many evangelical Christians, have embraced the idea that the return of Jews to the biblical land of Israel is in keeping with a Biblical prophecy and signals the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Jews are monotheists who don't believe in the second coming, which is described in the New Testament, not the Hebrew bible.
Root has backed numerous conspiracy theories, including one previously pushed by Trump that Obama wasn't born in the United States, and a conspiracy theory that the murder of former Democratic staffer Seth Rich was orchestrated by Democrats during the campaign.
On Tuesday night, an outraged Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is Jewish and is running for president on the Democratic ticket, slammed the president for his remarks while speaking at a rally in Sioux Falls. Iowa.
'Let me say this to the President. I am a proud Jewish person and I have no concerns about voting Democratic and in fact I intend to vote for a Jewish man to become the next president of the United States,' Sanders said to uproarious applause.

Trump administration rolls out plan to detain migrant children INDEFINITELY and president hails end of 'catch and release' – but federal judge needs to approve the move, setting stage for court battle

 • New regulations will allow the government to hold migrant children in border detention centers indefinitely

 • The DHS rules would end protections given to minor migrants under the Flores Settlement Agreement

 • Under Flores, after 20 days children border crossers had to be released to a family member, guardian or at the very least a non-prison-like jail facility

 • Some claim illegal immigrants have crossed with children with the expectation they will be swiftly released from detention

 • Donald Trump insists these rules will put an end to 'catch and release' immigration practices

By KATELYN CARALLE, U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM
PUBLISHED: 10:32 EDT, 21 August 2019 | UPDATED: 11:37 EDT, 21 August 2019

The Department of Homeland Security is issuing a new rule this week which it claims will allow it to indefinitely detain migrant children and their parents who cross the border illegally, its acting boss announced Wednesday.
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan said the rule would finally replace the Flores Settlement Agreement, which stops children – and by extension their parents – from being detained for more than 20 days.
But it faces an instant legal battle because a federal judge must agree to tearing up the Flores settlement, with immigrant groups already preparing for a fight which is likely to end up in the Supreme Court.
Donald Trump hailed the rule, which will not be published until Friday, as the end to 'catch and release' immigration practices, and McAleenan claimed it would be a significant deterrent to illegal immigration.

'Brandon Judd, President, National Border Patrol Council. 'This will effectively end Catch and Release and curb illegal entries,'' Trump posted to his Twitter Wednesday, quoting the Border Patrol Council president.

The Flores agreement established that when families with children were captured and detained, they had to be released in less than two dozen days to a family member or guardian in the U.S. – and if that was not possible they had to be transferred to a care facility that does not operate like a jail.
The Trump administration insists the limits set by Flores has encouraged illegal immigrants to arrive at the border with children with the expectation of being swiftly released.
In 2018, the administration proposed a similar plan to this one, but the rules were never enacted as there was an influx of migrants arriving at the border and a shortage of bed space.
Although there was a massive dip in illegal border crossing during Trump’s first year in the White House, the frequency spiked in late 2018, and border agents and officials lamented they were not prepared for the influx, leading to overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at many detention facilities.
As of May 2019, there were at least seven documented instances where children died from illness complications after being held in some of these centers.
The rationale for the rules proposed in September 2018 was that the government should be permitted to detain children for longer so they could be treated with 'dignity, respect and special concern for their particular vulnerability as minors,' as required by the Flores agreement.
It seems the 2018 plan is being reupped now that there has been a drop in border crossings in recent weeks and border facilities are less overwhelmed.
The dip comes after Trump made an agreement with the Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for the government to deploy Mexican security forces to help crack down on asylum seekers on their side of the border.
It's likely the rules, which again seeks to 'terminate' some of the restrictions in Flores, will be challenged in court.

There's just so much drumpf garbage in the news the last few days it's hard to even think straight. His use of Israel as a litmus test for Jewish loyalty - to who? To Israel? To the US? TO HIM???

If anything causes American Jews to put Israel's safety over loyalty to the US it's drumpf's policies and the anti-Semitism he is instigating, here and around the world. There is a segment of American Jewry that sees Israel as a haven should things here become untenable. They look back at the Holocaust and promise themselves they won't let it happen to them. That he believes that Israelis think of him as a god is just one more delusion in a sick, twisted mind - and a delusion that will turn off even more Jewish voters.

Wayne Allyn Root is an absolute loon. The fact that Trump quoted him is sick and twisted as Lizzy said.
For Trump to agree with Root’s comments should be considered blasphemy to Christians. If there are any American Jews left who were voting for Trump in 2020 he may have just lost them too. At least I hope so ...

Considering how religious Mike Pence is, will this latest insanity come close enough to heresy for him to invoke the 25th Amendment or will he find some sniveling way to make it palatable to the right-wing base?

drumpf is no god, no second-coming of Christ, no messiah. If he's anything, he's the spawn of the Devil.

Donald Trump on Wednesday accused Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of being 'nasty' when she said his plan to buy Greenland was 'absurd.'
The president told reporters on the South lawn her statement on the matter 'was nasty' during a 35-minute, free wheeling exchange that included his thoughts on gun background checks, Israel, the New York Times, China and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
His remarks came after Frederiksen said earlier Wednesday she was 'surprised' at Trump's decision to cancel his two-day visit. But her initial reaction on Monday - after the president publicly confirmed his interest in buying Greenland - was to call it 'absurd.'
Frederiksen was in Greenland on Monday to visit her counter part there when she said any talk of a sale was 'an absurd discussion.'

Trump showed his anger at her use of the word.
'I thought that the prime minister's statement that it was absurd - that it was an absurd idea - was nasty. I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to do is say no, we wouldn't be interested,' he said.
He repeatedly went back to her word 'absurd' when asked about American-Danish relations after officials refused to consider his offer to buy the world's largest island - and complained Frederiksen could not treat the U.S. that way.
'She shouldn't treat the United States that way. She said absurd. That's not the right word to use. Absurd,' he said of Frederiksen's reaction to but Greenland, which is an autonomous Danish territory.
'I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to do is say no, we wouldn't be interested,' he added.
'I thought it was a very not nice way of saying something. They could have told me no,' he said. 'All they had to do is say, no, we would rather not do that or we would rather not talk about it. Don't say what an absurd idea that is.'
He accused her of insulting the United States with her response.
'She's not talking to me,' he said of Frederiksen. 'She's talking to the United States of America. You don't talk to the United States that way. At least under me.'
'I thought it was not a nice statement - the way she blew me off,' he added later. 'We've done a lot for Denmark.'

Donald Trump accused the Danish prime minister of being 'nasty' when she said his plan to buy Greenland was 'absurd'

Trump originally said Greenland was not the reason for his trip to Denmark
Trump also said he was not looking at purchasing land from other countries.
'No,' he said in response to a question from Dailymail.com. 'Greenland was just an idea. Just a thought. But I think when they say it was absurd and it was said in a very nasty, very sarcastic way, I said we'll make it some other time.'
'I love Denmark. I've been to Denmark and, frankly, we'll do it another time,' he added. 'Respect has to be shown to the United States.'
He also noted he was not the first president to bring up the idea of buying Greenland.
'The prime minister used a terrible word when talking about something we've been talking about for years,' he said.
'This is something that has been discussed for many years. Harry Truman had the idea of Greenland. I had the idea. Other people have had the idea. It goes back into the early 1900s. But Harry Truman very strongly thought it was a good idea. I think it is a good idea because Denmark is losing $700 million a year with it. It doesn't do them any good,' he noted.
Additionally, Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, a close Trump ally on Capitol Hill, also is interested in purchasing Greenland.
Cotton raised the idea in August 2018 when Danish Ambassador Lone Dencker Wisborg dropped by his Senate office, The Atlantic reported. Cotton also discussed the idea with Trump - although no time frame was given for when that conversation took place.
After his angry rant at Frederiksen, Trump then took to Twitter to complain Denmark is not paying enough in its NATO fees.

'For the record, Denmark is only at 1.35% of GDP for NATO spending. They are a wealthy country and should be at 2%. We protect Europe and yet, only 8 of the 28 NATO countries are at the 2% mark. The United States is at a much, much higher level than that,' he wrote.
'Because of me, these countries have agreed to pay ONE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS more - but still way short of what they should pay for the incredible military protection provided. Sorry!,' he added.
Denmark agreed to raise its NATO contribution to 1.5 percent of its gross domestic product in 2023, up from 1.35 percent it will pay this year, Danish officials said in January.
Trump's cancelation comes as Barack Obama has made his own plans to visit Denmark.
The former president will be at the Musikkens Hus (Music House) in the northern city Aalborg on September 28 for 'A Conversation with President Barack Obama.' The invitation-only event will be for business leaders but will also include around two hundred students from Aalborg University, Ritzau, a Danish news site
The president has been vocal about his interest in obtaining Greenland but Frederiksen slammed his scouting efforts as 'absurd', saying the semi-autonomous island is not for sale.
The Danish prime minister also said she was 'disappointed and surprised' by Trump's decision to cancel his upcoming state visit.
Snubbed in his purchase offer, Trump, a former real estate tycoon, decided to postpone his meeting with Frederiksen, which was scheduled to take place in two weeks, in a dramatic last-minute decision announced on Twitter Tuesday night.
Queen Margrethe II and the royal household on Wednesday expressed surprise at the sudden cancellation, while other prominent Danish politicians described it as 'deeply insulting'.

President Barack Obama, seen in Germany in April, will be in Denmark on September 28 to speak to business leaders and students
Trump's visit was originally seen as a thank you to the small northern European nation, which is a member of NATO and has supported the U.S. military missions in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan.
The country has seen 43 Danish troops members killed in those U.S.-led missions, which is a large number for a country of 5.5 million not used to participating in battle.
His cancellation has now sparked worries of a diplomatic row but Frederiksen argued it would not harm relations between Copenhagen and Washington.
Frederiksen, who took office two months ago as Denmark's second female head of state and the leader of the left-leaning Social Democratic Party, said relations between Copenhagen and Washington 'are not in any crisis in my opinion' after Trump canceled his plans to visit Denmark following her rejection of the sale.
'I don't believe that the cancellation should have any influence on other matters,' she said.
She also confirmed Wednesday that 'a discussion about a potential sale of Greenland has been put forward.'
But she noted: 'It has been rejected by Greenland Premier Kim Kielsen, and I fully stand behind that rejection'.
The prime minister said she was 'disappointed and surprised' by Trump's decision to cancel his two-day stop in her country.
But she told reporters that 'the invitation for a stronger strategic cooperation with the Americans in the Arctic is still open'.
Former Danish government ministers were quick to speak out, with ex-foreign minister and head of the foreign affairs committee in parliament, Martin Lidegaard, telling Trump to 'please stop'.
He added to Danish broadcaster TV2 that it was 'a diplomatic farce' and added that Trump's behavior was 'grotesque' and he was 'throwing a hissy fit'.
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a former Danish Prime Minister, wrote on Twitter that Trump's cancellation was 'deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark'.

Trump tweeted Tuesday evening that he would postpone the meeting, originally scheduled during his September 2 and 3 state visit, 'for another time' because Frederiksen said Greenland was not for sale
While another ex-finance minister, Kristian Jensen, went further describing it as 'total chaos' and adding: 'This has gone from a great opportunity for a strengthened dialogue between allies to a diplomatic crisis.'
Lene Balleby, head of communications for the Danish royal family, said: 'It [the cancellation] was a surprise - we have nothing more to say about this case.'
Frederiksen noted that preparations for the September 2 and 3 visit were 'well underway'.
'It is with regret and surprise that I received the news that President Trump has cancelled his state visit to Denmark on the second and third of September,' she said.
'I had been looking forward to the visit, our preparations were well underway. It was an opportunity, I think, to celebrate Denmark's close relationship to the US - who remains one of Denmark's closest allies.
'I was looking forward to having a dialogue on the many shared interests we have with the US.
'Furthermore the development in the Arctic region called for further co-operation between the US, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark. And therefore I would like to underline our invitation for a stronger co-operation on Arctic affairs still stands.
Trump was prepared to take over Denmark's annual $600 million subsidy to Greenland in perpetuity before he canceled his visit.
The president also had discussed giving Denmark a large one-time payment as well to help move the transaction along, senior administration officials told The Washington Post.
Greenland handles its own domestic affairs but Denmark covers its national security and foreign relations. The Danes also pay for 50 percent of the island's budget in direct subsidies with additional spending on defense.
In total, Denmark spends about $740 million annually on Greenland.

Frederiksen pointed out Greenland officials rejected the idea - a move she supported.
'A discussion however has been raised about a potential sale of Greenland. This has clearly been rejected by Kim Kielsen, a position that I share of course,' she said.
'This does not change the character of our good relations and we will, of course, from Denmark continue an ongoing dialogue with the US on how we can develop our co-operation and deal with the many common challenges we are facing.'
Trump was invited by Denmark's Queen Margrethe II for a state visit in Copenhagen in early September, which would have followed a stop in Warsaw, Poland, where the president will take part in a series of ceremonies in honor of the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II.
First lady Melania Trump was to have accompanied him and dinner with the Queen was on the agenda.
The president initially claimed the visit wouldn't be about a Greenland purchase, his sudden cancellation has cast doubts on the intentions of his trip.
A senior official told DailyMail.com last week that Trump was visiting Denmark because he was invited and not to purchase Greenland.
The senior official said that reports on Trump's interest in buying the property were being 'overblown,' and the president was not entirely serious pursuing the sale.
However, Trump's tweets challenged that.
'Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time....' the president wrote on Twitter Tuesday night.
'The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!' he added, digging at Frederiksen for spurning his interest in buying the island.

During the state visit he would have met with Prime Minister Frederiksen as well as Greenland's Prime Minister Kim Kielsen, and other Danish leaders.
He was due to discuss the Arctic in meetings in Copenhagen with Frederiksen, who took office in June.
His cancellation came just three hours after the US ambassador to Denmark tweeted: 'Denmark is ready for the POTUS @realDonaldTrump visit! Partner, ally, friend' sharing a picture of a billboard emblazoned with Trump's name.

Timeline of Trump and Greenland

Trump was invited by Denmark's Queen Margrethe II for a state visit on September 2 and 3 during which he'd meet with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's Prime Minister Kim Kielsen
August 15: Reports surface that Trump is considering buying Greenland
August 16: Greenland's government tweets 'We are open for business, but we're not for sale'
August 18: Frederiksen says 'Greenland is not for sale' and calls the purchase talks 'absurd'
August 20: Trump cancels Denmark visit and talks with Frederiksen because she refused to talk about potential Greenland purchase

Trump started to express his interest in purchasing the island earlier this month, which he said would be a strategic move for its natural resources and because the U.S. military has operated for decades out of the Thule Air Base in Greenland, located between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans.
The northern-most U.S. base is part of the military's global network of radars and other sensors to provide ballistic missile warning and space surveillance.
'Strategically it's interesting and we'd be interested, but we'll talk to them a little bit. It's not number one on the burner, I can tell you that,' Trump previously said.
Trump said Denmark loses almost $700 million a year on Greenland, which boasts a population of just 56,000.
But Frederiksen dismissed Trump's real estate interests in the territory as 'absurd' on Sunday, reiterating that 'Greenland is NOT for sale'.
'Greenland is not for sale and U.S. President Donald Trump's idea of buying the semi-autonomous Danish territory in the Arctic from Denmark is an absurd discussion,' Denmark's prime minister said.
'Greenland is not Danish. Greenland is Greenlandic. I persistently hope that this is not something that is seriously meant,' she added.

Icebergs float behind the town of Kulusuk in Greenland this week
Greenland's government on Friday also dismissed the idea it was for sale.
'We are open for business, but we're not for sale,' Greenland's foreign minister Ane Lone Bagger told Reuters.
'#Greenland is rich in valuable resources such as minerals, the purest water and ice, fish stocks, seafood, renewable energy and is a new frontier for adventure tourism. We're open for business, not for sale,' the official account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted.
Interest in Greenland has grown as its ice sheet melts and more of its resources become available. The melting ice is also changing the availability of shipping routes in the Arctic. China and Russia have shown interest in the island.
A 2014 report from the Brookings Institute noted that Greenland's mineral and energy resources – including iron ore, lead, zinc, diamonds, gold, rare earth elements, uranium and oil – are becoming more accessible due to its ice sheeting melting.
Trump noted the country's strategic benefits - it sits between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans and is home to a U.S. Air Force base - in addition to its mineral resources.
Trump said Sunday that he would broach the subject of buying the island with Danish leaders during his state visit.
He told reporters, 'we're going to Poland and then we may be going to Denmark — not for this reason at all. But we're looking at it.'

Greenland's vast natural resources

The vast island of Greenland sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, has a population of 56,000 and has 80 per cent of its land mass covered by a 660,000 square-mile (1.7 million-square-kilometer) ice sheet.
The island's natural resources, spread across a total of 811,000 square miles, could also be one of the key attractions for the president.
As the climate changes and the arctic caps melt, there has been widespread interest in what is thought to be a rich potential of mineral and energy resources - iron ore, lead, zinc, diamonds, gold, rare-earth elements, uranium and oil.

A report in 2014 showed this map of areas of hydrocarbon development in Greenland. Hydrocarbon exploration is the search by geologists for deposits of substances such as petroleum and natural gas in the Earth
Research shows Greenland has been melting faster in the last decade and this summer, it has seen two of the biggest melts on record since 2012.
Both warmer air and warmer water are eating away at Greenland, causing it to lose billions of tons of ice daily in the summer.
And while a team of scientists and engineers are only just dropping probes into the ice to help figure out which is the bigger cause, water or air, one thing is certain, less ice could make the ability to uncover sub-earth treasures more feasible.
With less ice, access to this rich pool of resource beneath the land could become easier - making Greenland a territorial interest for the global powers.
A 2014 report, titled: The Greenland Gold Rush: highlighted how climate change had made waters around the icy territory more accessible.
'Only in recent years have exploration activities resumed as a result of global warming opening up parts of the Arctic, including areas in Greenland, along with dramatic increases in raw material demand and mineral prices in the mid-2000s.
It found within Greenland, the self-governing body is looking at a way of using these natural resources to help it rely less on foreign-aid and investment and become more economically and politically independent from Denmark.
Nations from Russia to China, the US, Canada and elsewhere are racing to stake as strong a claim as they can to Arctic lands, hoping they will yield future riches.
At the same time, scientists consider Greenland the canary in the coal mine for climate change and say its massive ice sheet has seen once of its biggest melts on record this summer, contributing to a global rise in sea levels.

Why would US want to purchase Greenland?

Greenland is 811,000-square-miles - roughly the size of Western Europe and the largest island in the world.
The Danish autonomous territory is located between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans, and has significant natural resources and geopolitical significance.
The US already maintains an airbase there - Thule Air Base, which is America's northernmost base.
During the Cold War, Thule was a critical facility due to its location across the pole from the USSR.
The base's secret construction, undertaken by an armada of 120 ships, has been compared in scale to the effort required to build the Panama Canal.
Greenland is believed by some geologists to have some of the world's largest remaining oil resources.
China, perhaps eyeing these resources, has attempted to establish an economic foothold by financing three airports.
Last year the Pentagon managed to block China's efforts.

Maybe if Trump hadn’t made his announcement on Twitter about his interest in buying Greenland but talked to Danish officials privately PM Frederiksen wouldn’t have had to push back at him publicly. Once again this is Trump’s fault. Why is it that he calls every woman who doesn’t agree with his views or criticizes him ‘nasty’. He called the PM nasty today. Hmmm, never hear him calling any man ‘nasty’.

That's simply a grotesque story. Trump made it out of nothing, like Donna said: If he simply had gone there for a state visit and had talked about it with the Prime Minister, this story would have been completely different.

I'm not sure if this isn't a red herring to hide another story...

Spot on Carol. That's exactly what it is - and it keeps happening because he knows the Press won't ignore it and walkright into his distraction - or will be in a dilemma about coverage.

He's been doing this for a long time now - and this morning we hear that Pompeo is now rolling the Greenland stuff  back.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-49430537 Loved the way Greenland talked about his lack of respect.

Remember the Jim Acosta incident at the White House? Apparently the White House press office rang him that evening and thanked him!!

Meanwhile dodgy people with no knowledge are being appointed to all sorts of high places while he very effectively uses and distracts the 24 hour media cycle for his own vanity.

The student activists who survived last year’s school shooting in Parkland, Fla., have put forward a set of proposals to curb gun violence ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
“A Peace Plan for a Safer America” was posted online by March for Our Lives, the gun violence prevention organization founded by survivors of the Feb. 14, 2018, attack at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people. The plan calls gun violence “a national public health emergency” and outlines steps the U.S. government should take to address the epidemic.
One proposal is to “raise the national standard for gun ownership” by implementing a national licensing and registry system and raising the age of owning a gun from 18 to 21. The Parkland shooter was 19.
The plan also calls for a ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and “other weapons of war.”
“It’s simple,” the plan states. “Weapons of war that enable more casualties during mass shootings should not be allowed on our streets and in our communities. We’ve debated this for decades and it’s time to get it done.”

The plan would also implement a national gun buy-back program with the goal of reducing the number of firearms in circulation by about 30 percent. According to the Global Small Arms Survey, a project of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, there are more than 393 million civilian-owned firearms in the United States, meaning there are more guns than people.

Another goal of the plan: To reduce by 50 percent the rate of gun deaths in the Unites States. Every day, approximately 100 Americans are killed with guns and hundreds more are shot and injured, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A 2016 study by the American Journal of Medicinefound that Americans are 25 times more likely to be killed by gun violence than people in other high-income countries.

To this end, calls for the appointment of a National Director of Gun Violence Prevention, which will focus on educating Americans about the dangers of guns, suicide prevention and mental health, among other initiatives.
The plan also calls for the creation of the “Safety Corps,” based on the Peace Corps. People ages 16 to 25 would be eligible.

“Over the next 10 years, this new domestic program will put 10,000 young people per year to work on paid, one-year engagements in communities and non-profits around the country,” the plan states.

A critical part of the holistic plan would be empowering young people at the ballot box and encouraging turnout by implementing automatic voter registration the moment Americans turn 18 years old.
“The more we participate in our civic process, the more effective we will be at reducing the impact of gun violence on the next generation,” the plan states.
Parkland survivors were active at the ballot box ahead of the 2018 midterms, when March for Our Lives went on a multi-state bus tour to register voters.

“Our generation and the many generations that are helping us can change the game,” Parkland survivor and March for Our Lives co-founder Cameron Kasky said at the time. “We don’t have to surrender to dirty, awful politics. We can make it better. And the best way to do that is to vote.”
Another Parkland survivor, Tyah-Amoy Roberts, who is on the March for Our Lives board of directors, told The Washington Post that the peace plan is “bold. It’s nothing like anyone else is proposing. We are really setting audacious goals.”
The announcement of the plan comes weeks after 31 people were killed in high-profile mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. In the weeks after those attacks, police have made at least 27 arrests over threats to commit mass shootings, reports CNN. While many of them may have been hoaxes and jokes, NBC News reports that police in at least four cities have thwarted credible potential attacks.

David Hogg, another Parkland survivor who co-founded March for Our Lives, told the Post, “I think similarly to a lot of the country, I’m in a lot of pain right now. You see these shootings on TV every day and very little happening around it. It’s painful to watch. And I think it’s been really hard for me and many of the other students and people that we work with to find hope in this time.”
But he added, “I think that this plan is something that we can truly — as a country and as Americans united against violence and fighting for peace — can get behind.”

I’m so impressed with these kids! What an ambitious and smart plan they’ve come up with. Hope we get a Democrat in the White House next year and a Democratic majority in the Senate. This plan could be used as a blueprint for proposing new gun control policies in Congress.

Trump is unhinged. I watched him outside with the press when he was claiming he was the chosen one. The man is off his rocker. So much of his controversial comments are distractions from some other controversial comments he has made or a negative news story about him. Yesterday could have been all about deflecting from the possible recession news. I understand he is twisted in knots over that. Sweating bullets. Literally! He sweats a lot.

Yep, it always seems to be about him, doesn't it?

Totally agree with you, Donnamarie - I'm totally in awe of the Parkland students. Just saw this story and wondered whether to put it in the George's charities section given his previous support. Would not be at all surprised to learn that he's available to them at any time

Donald Trump's ambassador to Denmark is a former soap opera actress who took over her husband's venture capital firm when he died and donated thousands to the president.
Carla Sands, 58, became the United States' top diplomat in Copenhagen in December 2017 - less than a year after the president took office.
Her tenure was a relatively quiet one - until Trump canceled his upcoming two-day visit to the northern European country after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said his plan to buy Greenland was 'absurd.'

Sands touted her work with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in planning Trump's state visit
Sands will be part of the American team picking up the diplomatic pieces after Trump's snub of the small NATO ally.

But Trump's throwing the spotlight on Denmark also turned attention to the woman he picked to represent American interests there.
Sands, the widow of Los Angeles real estate titan Fred Sands, was a big Trump supporter in the 2016 campaign.
She served on his economic advisory committee, attended the Republican National Convention as a Trump delegate and hosted a fundraiser for him at her posh Bel Air mansion.
Personally, she maxed out in her donations to Trump's campaign: giving $5,400 to Donald J. Trump for President, Inc., and $250,000 to Trump Victory. She also donated $100,000 to his inaugural committee.

It's not uncommon for presidents to award wealthy donors with the title of ambassador - a practice used by former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and a number of their predecessors.
But Sands hasn't let her status as a diplomat stop her from expressing herself politically on social media.
In both her official U.S. Ambassador twitter account - @USAmbDenmark - and her personal @CarlaHSands account, there are retweets of articles from conservative news outlets such as the Daily Caller, criticism of the mainstream media, support of democracy in Hong Kong and tweets of her support for Israel.
Additionally, on her official ambassador account she retweeted articles from the Daily Caller featuring negative coverage of the Democrats challenging Trump for president.
On her personal account, she often retweets Trump favorites Representative Matt Gaetz, Team Trump (the Trump reelection campaign account), and Breitbart News.
She also promotes a number of conspiracy theories.
For example, she retweeted a tweet from Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton, featuring a clip of himself pushing a conspiracy theory that the Obama-led FBI spied on Trump's 2016 campaign.

Sands along side a rocket built of legos to celebrate the anniversary of Americans landing on the moon
She has tweeted a number of items from Praguer U - a group that pushes a right-wing perspective - including a tweet from the group that humans weren't responsible for global warming because they lived through 'the Roman Warm Period (warmer than today) the cooler Dark Ages the Medieval Warm period the Little Ice Age (which drove the Vikings out of Greenland) and a gradual 300-year warming.'
And she retweeted a hoax video from conservative commentator John Cardillo that claims to show black Americans attacking a white Trump supporter. The video has been debunked as two years old and there are questions if the white woman under attack is even a Trump supporter.
But Sands also appears to enjoy her time as ambassador - posting from her official account photos of her in official duties, including meeting with veterans, promoting U.S. interests, visiting Greenland, and preparing for Trump's now canceled state visit.
Sands was in Greenland last month as part of an official visit - although it's unlikely it was related to Trump's desire to purchase the world's largest island from Denmark.
She posted photos of herself meeting with residents and exploring the island.

Sands' twitter account features a number of retweets of conspiracy theories
'Pilluaritsi #Greenland on celebrating your National Day & the tenth anniversary of Greenlandic self-rule! I look forward to continuing our increased engagement with #KalaallitNunaat together with our GL Affairs Officer Sung Choi, strengthening people-to-people ties,' she wrote in June
She also touted her work planning Trump's state visit.
'Excited to work with @Statsmin as we plan @POTUS Donald Trump's visit to the Kingdom of Denmark! Thank you Mette Frederiksen for your leadership and the Danish people for your great friendship! #dkpol #alliedstrong #partnershipsmatter,' she tweeted last week along with a photo of herself and Frederiksen.
Sands appeared to be caught off guard by Trump's cancellation.
He announced it in a tweet Tuesday night but, three hours earlier, she had tweeted the nation was excited about Trump's upcoming stop.
'Denmark is ready for the POTUS @realDonaldTrump visit! Partner, ally, friend,' she wrote.
Before joining Trump's administration as ambassador, Sands had a plethora of jobs.
She started her career as an actress in the 1980s - using her maiden name Carla Herd - and appeared in nine episodes of the daytime soap 'The Bold and the Beautiful' along with roles in the films 'Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell' and 'Wild Zone.'
She also graduated from Life Chiropractic College - a school that lost its accreditation and is now Life University.
In 1990, she married Fred Sands. The millionaire real estate investor sold his firm to Coldwell Banker for more than $100 million in 2000 and then formed the Vintage Capital Group, which he ran until his sudden death from a stroke in October 2015.

Sands tweeted about her visit to Greenland
With his passing, Carla Sands took over the investment firm.
Fred Sands called Trump a 'joke' in July 2015 interview with The Jewish Journal.
'He likes the publicity because that's how he lives. He's not really a real estate guy. He licenses his name and surrounds himself with publicity. And he might show up in the polls right now, but that's going to go away,' he said at the time.
After their marriage, Carla Sands joined the Los Angeles charity scene.
She sat on a number of boards including the Blue Ribbon of the Los Angeles Music Center, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the California Cultural and Historical Endowment.
She was confirmed by the Senate as ambassador to Denmark in November 2017.
'Among my top priorities are people to people relations, defense and security cooperation, also trade and investment,' she said in a video posted to the embassy's Facebook page shortly after she arrived in the country.
She noted her teenage daughter Allie was joining her in Denmark and described herself as a philanthropist, investor, and art lover.
When Sands presented her credentials to Queen Margrethe II two years ago, she arrived for the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage, wearing a long dark dress, fur coat and white gloves.

She had big shoes to fill in the role.
Her predecessor was Obama's appointee Rufus Gifford, who was beloved by the Danish people after he started in the reality TV show 'I Am the Ambassador From America.'
Gifford was a regular on Danish news programs and married his husband, Stephen DeVincent, at Copenhagen's city hall.

Wonder how the American ambassador to Iceland is dealing with this.

It's becoming increasingly obvious that all these visits are the US wanting to take advantage of the Arctic melt for mining and are playing catch up with Russia and China who are set to mine huge deposits

President Donald Trump tore into Jerome Powell Friday after the Fed Chair refused to provide a clear signal he will bend to Trump's demand for rate cuts – comparing him to China's President Xi Jinping, his chief economic and political rival.
'My only question is, who is our bigger enemy, Jay Powel or Chairman Xi?' Trump attacked on Twitter, minutes after the release of a Powell speech.
Trump also blasted China following its imposition of new retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products – saying U.S. companies are 'hereby ordered' to begin seeking alternative places to do business.

Trump misspelled the name of Powell, his own nominee to the powerful Fed position.
Trump used the title 'Chairman Kim,' which connotes his head of the Chinese Military Commission, an acknowledgement of his unchallenged military power. Xi also serves as president and head of the Chinese Communist Party.
Trump has long cast China as the greatest threat to the U.S., and is engaged in a furious trade war that Friday morning prompted China to level tariffs on $75 billion of U.S. products.
Trump tweeted Friday: 'As usual, the Fed did NOTHING! It is incredible that they can 'speak' without knowing or asking what I am doing, which will be announced shortly. We have a very strong dollar and a very weak Fed. I will work 'brilliantly' with both, and the U.S. will do great.'
The fed operates as an independent agency, with individual governors casting votes, in a system designed to insulate it from political pressure.
The blistering attack came after Powell offered no clear indication about how he plans to act on further rate cuts Friday despite relentless pressure from President Donald Trump.
'We will act as appropriate to sustain the expansion,' Powell said in remarks at a meeting of the Fed in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

President Donald Trump raged against the Federal Reserve once again Thursday over interest rates
Powell also noted that there is no 'settled rulebook' on how to respond to the current trade war, raising questions about what actions if any the Fed might take to try to mitigate President Trump's trade war with China.
In a likely reference to the president's spate of attacks on him and the Fed – an agency the president said acts 'like quicksand,' Powell observed: 'the three weeks since our July meeting have been eventful.'
In four more tweets, an agitated Trump demanded U.S. companies come 'HOME' from China.
'Our Country has lost, stupidly, Trillions of Dollars with China over many years. They have stolen our Intellectual Property at a rate of Hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year, & they want to continue. I won’t let that happen! We don’t need China and, frankly, would be far ... better off without them.'

He fumed that the Fed did 'NOTHING' at its Wyoming meeting
He continued: 'The vast amounts of money made and stolen by China from the United States, year after year, for decades, will and must STOP. Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China, including bringing ... your companies HOME and making your products in the USA.'
'I will be responding to China’s Tariffs this afternoon. This is a GREAT opportunity for the United States,' Trump said, without revealing more.
'Also, I am ordering all carriers, including Fed Ex, Amazon, UPS and the Post Office, to SEARCH FOR & REFUSE ... all deliveries of Fentanyl from China (or anywhere else!). Fentanyl kills 100,000 Americans a year. President Xi said this would stop - it didn’t. Our Economy, because of our gains in the last 2 1/2 years, is MUCH larger than that of China. We will keep it that way!'

By linking Powell to Xi Jinping, Trump was bringing up a major rival who he said he was 'chosen' to confront – and whose response could determine whether there is a slowdown that could imperil Trump.
Trump said Tuesday: 'The fact is, somebody had to take China on. My life would be a lot easier, if I didn't take China on. But I like doing it, because I have to do it.'
Last week Trump said China 'was like an anchor on us. China was killing us with unfair trade deals.'
Trump has also said he has good relations with Xi and praised him. In April, Trump said of Xi: 'He said, 'But I am not king, I am president.' I said 'No, you're president for life, and therefore you're king.''
Powell says Trump's trade wars have complicated the Fed's ability to set interest rate policies in his speech.
Speaking to a Fed policy conference in Jackson Hole, Powell pointed to increasing evidence of a global economic slowdown and suggests that uncertainty from Trump's trade wars has contributed to it.
He said the trade war posed a 'complex, turbulent' situation.
He also said he was 'carefully watching developments.'
Powell said the outlook for the U.S. economy remains favorable but that it continues to face risks. Powell reiterates that the Fed 'will act as appropriate to sustain the expansion.'
The Fed cut rates last month for the first time in a decade, and financial markets have baked in the likelihood of further rate cuts this year.
Said Powell: 'Fitting trade policy uncertainty into this framework is a new challenge. Setting trade policy is the business of Congress and the Administration, not that of the Fed,' according to a text of his speech.
'There are, however, no recent precedents to guide any policy response to the current situation. Moreover, while monetary policy is a powerful tool that works to support consumer spending, business investment, and public confidence,' it cannot provide a settled rulebook on international trade,' Powell said.

He spoke after President Trump had tweeted Friday that 'now the Fed can show their stuff!' That tweet followed yet another series of attacks on Powell and the Fed that Trump launched the day before, though in more restrained terms than in the past.
Trump  went after the Federal Reserve Thursday by saying it moves 'like quicksand,' after blasting the central bank a day earlier.
The president once again brought up Germany, which has begun selling long-term bonds offering a negative yield, amid a global move toward safe investments amid turbulent markets. Germany borrowed nearly $1 trillion by offering the bonds, which don't pay any interest to the investors buying them.
'Germany sells 30 year bonds offering negative yields. Germany competes with the USA,' Trump tweeted Thursday. 'Our Federal Reserve does not allow us to do what we must do. They put us at a disadvantage against our competition. Strong Dollar, No Inflation!'
Then, Trump complained: 'They move like quicksand. Fight or go home!'
The president made the comment as he prepares to head to France for a meeting with the G7 industrial nations, including Germany.
Later, Trump tweeted: 'The Economy is doing really well. The Federal Reserve can easily make it Record Setting! The question is being asked, why are we paying much more in interest than Germany and certain other countries? Be early (for a change), not late. Let America win big, rather than just win!'
He also complained about the comparison with Germany on Wednesday. He tweeted: 'So Germany is paying Zero interest and is actually being paid to borrow money, while the U.S., a far stronger and more important credit, is paying interest.'
As he left the White House for a day trip, Trump intoned: 'We'll see what happens with the Federal Reserve, whether or not they finally get smart and reduce interest rates, like many other places around the world that we have to compete with.'
Trump on Friday slammed reports the United States is headed toward a recession even as White House aides privately warned him an economic down turn is coming - just in time for his re-election campaign.
The president warned the stories about the struggling economy 'won't work because I always find a way to win.'
Trump has made a strong U.S. economy the centerpiece of his argument to voters on why they should give him a second term in office.

'The Economy is strong and good, whereas the rest of the world is not doing so well. Despite this the Fake News Media, together with their Partner, the Democrat Party, are working overtime to convince people that we are in, or will soon be going into, a Recession,' he tweeted Friday morning.
'They are willing to lose their wealth, or a big part of it, just for the possibility of winning the Election. But it won't work because I always find a way to win, especially for the people! The greatest political movement in the history of our Country will have another big win in 2020!,' he added.
Aides told the president earlier this month that some of their internal forecasts showed the economy could slow markedly over the next year - not quite a recession but a dip that would come as his re-election campaign was kicking into high gear, The Washington Post reported.
And Trump responded he thinks he can convince Americans the economy is strong - despite what any numbers show.
'Our economy is incredible,' Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday. 'Our economy is doing fantastically,' he repeated.
But aides also described the president as obsessed with media coverage of the economy because he's worried Americans will believe the news and stop spending.
'In the last couple of weeks, when the market dipped down, it did strike an amount of fear within the White House,' a White House official told The Post. 'There's been a sense going into 2020 that we can bounce back from virtually everything if the economy stays strong.'

Trump has kept the heat on Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell to cut interest rates
The private caution from aides comes as advisers publicly insist the economy is doing great - echoing the president's messaging.
'We think the economy is in sound shape,' Larry Kudlow, Director of the National Economic Council, told reporters at the White House on Thursday afternoon.
'We don't anticipate anything but a strong, solid economy,' he said. 'That's my message: folks are working, they're spending.'
And when asked if a recession was possible, Kudlow said he doesn't see one 'in the foreseeable future.'
While unemployment remains at a 50 year low, some other economic indicators have sparked worry - business investment has stalled and American manufacturing slowed for the first time in 10 years this month, endangering blue-collar jobs.
Trump's latest tweets come as Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell prepares to speak at the Fed's annual Jackson Hole symposium on Friday morning - remarks Wall Street and the president will be listening to closely.
Trump has used the Fed as his punching bag when it comes to the economy and kept the central bank under siege, demanding it cut interest rates.
'Now the Fed can show their stuff!,' he tweeted Friday morning ahead of Powell's remarks.
He kept the heat on this week.
'I'd like to see a cut in the Fed rate because that should've happened a long time ago. I think they're being very tardy in not doing in and not having done it sooner. They raised too quickly. And, you know, I've been quite vocal on that,' Trump said Tuesday.
And Team Trump continues to push a strong economic message with aides taking up the president's call to blame Democrats and the media for any recession talk.
'Now they are pushing a recession lie,' White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said of the media Tuesday on Fox News. 'The fact is so many on the left want these horrible things to be true, instead of pushing for more coverage about the incredible nature of our economy and how far it's gone.'

Larry Kudlow, Director of the National Economic Council, has pushed the message the economy is 'sound'

Trump, too, has pushed a strong economy message.
'I think the word 'recession' is a word that's inappropriate because it's just a word that certain people -- I'm going to be kind -- certain people, and the media, are trying to build up because they'd love to see a recession. We're very far from a recession,' he said Tuesday in the Oval Office.
In a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research out Friday, voters gave Trump his highest rating for handling the economy - approving of his job performance there over his handling of gun policy, immigration, and health care.
But even on the economic issue, Trump is slightly underwater: 46 per cent approve of his handling and 51 per cent disapprove.
Kudlow indicated on Thursday the White House could roll out a tax cut plan next year during the 2020 election - a sign the administration is looking at future economic numbers.
'We're looking at what I call tax cuts 2.0,' he said.  'It's a long-range project to help long-range growth of the economy to provide additional tax relief to middle income people, blue-collar people.'
He added: 'And it probably will come out during the campaign.'
Blue-collar voters helped put Trump in the White House during the 2016 election.
There have been other signs this week of a slow down in economic growth.
U.S. Steel -  a company whose renaissance has been a key part of the Trump narrative - said it would lay off 200 workers. It will also idle two blast furnaces for at least six months at Great Lakes and Gary Works plants in Michigan, citing lower steel prices and softening demand.
The layoffs were characterized as temporary in filings, but the company admitted they could last longer than six months, in another indicator that the U.S. economy is slowing down.
Michigan is critical to Trump's re-election prospects and his win there in 2016 helped put him in the White House.
In more bad news for the president, a top lender, JP Morgan Chase, assessed that Trump's tariffs on China will cost American consumers $1,000 a household.
And 74 per cent of economists surveyed by the National Association for Business Economics for a report released Monday said they believe a slowing economy will tip into recession by 2021.

A city council candidate in Michigan shocked a public forum when she said she wants to keep her community white 'as much as possible.'
Jean Cramer, one of five candidates running for three city council seats in November, made the comment Thursday in response to a question about diversity in Marysville, a city in St. Clair County, Michigan, the Port Huron Times Heraldreported.
Demographics data from the 2010 Census indicated that 97.5 per cent of Marysville's 9,900 population was white at the time. Recent demographic data, based off the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, says that the city's now 9,700 population is 94.75 per cent white now, according to World Population Review

When the forum moderator asked candidates if Marysville should do more to attract foreign-born residents, who are boosting populations in some Great Lakes states, Cramer responded: 'Keep Marysville a white community as much as possible.'
After the forum, when asked if she cared to clarify her statement, Cramer told the newspaper that, 'Husband and wife need to be the same race. Same thing with kids' and added that 'as far as me being against blacks, no I'm not.'
Other candidates at the forum were deeply troubled by Cramer's statement about keeping the city 'a white community as much as possible.'
'Just checking the calendar here and making sure it's still 2019,' candidate Mike Deising said after Cramer spoke.
Council member Paul Wessel said anyone who makes it to Marysville should be allowed to live there.

Marysville's population is said to be almost 95 per cent white, according to recent data

Cramer's words impacted Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Hayman personally, as she revealed during the forum, which took place in the council meeting room is named for Hayman's late father, Joseph Johns, a Syrian who owned a local business and was an elected official for 55 years.
'I don't even know that I can talk yet, I'm so upset and shocked,' Hayman told Cramer, adding, 'So basically, what you've said is that my father and his family had no business to be in this community.'
'My son-in-law is a black man and I have bi-racial grandchildren,' Hayman said. 'And I take this very personally what you've said, and I know that there's nothing I can say that's going to change your mind. ... We just need to have more kindness — that's it.'
In response to Hayman's statements about her biracial family, Cramer told the Port Huron Times Herald that 'What Kathy Hayman doesn't know is that her family is in the wrong.'
Cramer then went on to illustrate her views against the mixing of races by stating that a 'husband and wife need to be the same race. Same thing with kids. That's how it's been from the beginning of, how can I say, when God created the heaven and the earth. He created Adam and Eve at the same time.'
She then added: 'But as far as me being against blacks, no I'm not.'
Recent demographic data indicates that 2.76 per cent of Marysville's population is mixed race.
Mayor Dan Damman said in a statement after the forum that Cramer's 'racists comments' were 'as vile as they were jaw-dropping.'
'Mrs. Cramer's disturbing and disgusting ideology is flatly rejected by me, our entire City Council, all of city administration, and our employees,' Damman said in the statement.
Cramer is said to have moved to Marysville with the last 10 years and never previously served on the city's council before.
Cramer told the Port Huron Herald Times in early August that she is interested in representing the concerns of the 'good size population' of senior citizens in the community.
In 2016, Marysville's median household income was estimated to be about $61,400, with median home values being about $133,200. An estimated 9.2 per cent of the city's residents were said to be living in poverty.
Comparatively, nearby Detroit's 2016 estimated median household income was said to be $28,099, while home values were $43,500. An estimated 35.7 per cent of the city's population is said to be living in poverty.

The only appropriate answer was if nobody voted for her. But unfortunately there are always votees who agree with her and are happy that there's a candidate who shares their opinions...
