BREAKING NEWS: Trump proposes bump stock ban in wake of Florida school horror and White House says door is open to more gun controls

 • Trump is mulling legislation to strengthen existing background check and federal firearms laws in the wake of last week's Florida massacre

 • He is cautiously endorsing a bipartisan bill in the Senate that would reward and punish states and federal agencies based on background check information

 • 'While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the President is supportive of efforts to improve the Federal background check system,' White House said Monday

 • Legislation is sponsored by top-ranking GOP Sen. John Cornyn and Democrat Chris Murphy of Connecticut

 • Trump visited victims of the shooting at a hospital 40 miles south of his private resort on Friday

 • Has been criticized for his response to the shooting by Democrats and survivors

President Donald Trump took action on Tuesday to outlaw bump stocks like the one used in the Las Vegas shooting last year.
'I signed a memorandum directing the Attorney General to propose regulations to ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns,' Trump said in the wake of a Florida massacre in which the killer did not use such a device.
Trump's directive, which he pointedly brought up a at a White House Medal of Valor ceremony, followed his press secretary's announcement minutes before that the president had ordered his administration to look at ways it could unilaterally deter mass shootings like the one in Parkland.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders also said that Trump had not closed the door on new gun controls, including an assault weapons ban that is unpopular with the president's base.

The White House on Monday said that Trump is mulling legislation to strengthen existing background check and federal firearms laws in the wake of last week's Florida massacre.
The White House says Trump has been in touch with the Republican author of a Senate bill that would provide the carrot and the stick to states and federal agencies to provide better comply with background check requirements.
'While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the President is supportive of efforts to improve the Federal background check system,' White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a Monday statement.

Protestors join in on a grassroots movement during a rally against gun violence in downtown Los Angeles on Monday in response to the tragic shooting last week in Parkland

Parkland survivors plan gun control march on Washington DC

The legislation that looks to 'fix' the National Instant Criminal Background Check System legislation has the backing of key senators on both sides of the aisle.
On the Republican side, it is being pushed by Sen. John Cornyn, the majority whip. Democrat Chris Murphy of Connecticut, whose state is home to Newtown, is a sponsor, as well.
GOP Sen. James Lankford, another sponsor of the bill, said Sunday on 'Meet the Press' that he legislation primarily upgrades 'our background check system to make sure that all the information is actually getting in there.'
'We have a lot of warning signs that were out there, and people in Parkland, and all across the country, have every reason to be grieved and incredibly furious,' Lankford said.
The senator said that Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz's file should have reflected social service visits to his home, his expulsion from school, the violent posts he made online and warnings people who were concerned about him sent into the FBI.
'All the warning signs were there. The community did all the things the community should do to engage. They saw something, they said something, and nothing was done,' the Oklahoma senator said.
Cornyn did not immediately comment on the White House's suggestion Monday that it would be willing to get behind his bill, depending on how the finalized text is worded.
Murphy said in a tweet that the statement made for an 'interesting morning' and the president's support for the legislation 'is another sign the politics of gun violence are shifting rapidly.'
The Democrat crusader for gun control legislation also said, 'No one should pretend this bill alone is an adequate response to this epidemic.'

President Trump celebrated his holiday with a trip to his West Palm Beach golf club after forgoing the routine that takes him from one property to the other most weekend mornings when he's in town out of respect for the Parkland shooting victims
A progressive organization with the sole purpose of cracking down on firearms laws they see as too lax likewise said that the measure alone was not to make a dent in gun violence.
'If all Congress does is pass the Fix NICS Act, then lawmakers will have failed to meet this moment and do their job,' Everytown for Gun Safety said.
The group said that Americans across the country are 'demanding that Congress finally get serious and meet this moment with robust action to reduce gun violence' and the Cornyn-Murphy bill 'is a small step forward.'
'Congress needs to do much more, starting with legislation to require criminal background checks on every gun sale -- supported by 95 percent of Americans,' the group said.
Background checks are not required when firearms are sold by private sellers, including at gun shows. The exemption has given rise to the term 'gun show loophole' for that reason.
Legislators unsuccessfully attempted to pass legislation in the Senate placing new restrictions on firearms sales in 2013 after a mentally ill man gunned down 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary in Murphy's home state.
Then-President Barack Obama aggressively chased the reforms but none of the measures earned the required 60 votes in bitterly divided upper chamber.
A assault weapons ban championed by California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein and background check legislation spearheaded by Sens. Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, and Pat Toomey, a Republican from Pennsylvania, each failed.

Lashing out at his predecessor's party on Twitter on Saturday evening, Trump said, 'Just like they don’t want to solve the DACA problem, why didn’t the Democrats pass gun control legislation when they had both the House & Senate during the Obama Administration.
'Because they didn’t want to, and now they just talk!' the Republican asserted.
Democrats were in control of the House and Senate for Obama's first two years in office. They chose to prioritize healthcare reform in those years, ultimately passing Obamacare.
Obama's gun control push in his second term, when Democrats controlled the Senate but not the House, did not pan out. The president consequently took as much executive action as the White House believed he legally had the power to in order to enact some new firearms regulations.
Republicans lawmakers rolled back an Obama-era rule that was intended to make it more difficult for people with mental health issues to purchase guns at the beginning of 2017.
Democrats were swift to point out on Thursday that it was Trump who signed the legislation containing the scale-back into law after the Republican president said mental health was the issue.
Trump in a tweet also appeared to blame peers of Cruz's and adults around him who knew that something was off about his behavior and did not contact the police.

US President Donald Trump (C) talks with his son Barron (L) as First Lady Melania Trump (R) boards Air Force One at Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach on Monday to return to Washington
A separate message that Trump sent over the weekend that ridiculed federal authorities for not acting on a tip upset students who survived the shooting because it made reference to the FBI's investigation into collusion between his campaign and Russia in the 2016 election.
A student claiming to be a survivor of the shooting said in response:'17 of my classmates are gone. That's 17 futures, 17 children, and 17 friends stolen. But you're right, it always has to be about you. How silly of me to forget. #neveragain" '

Trump visited Broward Health North hospital on Friday evening and spoke to two victims of the Parkland high school shooting behind closed doors.
'It’s sad something like that could happen,' Trump said of the massacre that snuffed out 17 young lives.
The president and first lady also stopped by the Broward County Sheriff’s office in Fort Lauderdale.
He was joined there by Florida Gov. Rick Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Sen. Marco Rubio, who caught a ride on Air Force One with the president.
Scott has called on FBI Director Chris Wray to resign, but the White House said Tuesday that Trump still has confidence in the DOJ official.

Donald Trump Jr. has liked a tweet criticizing a teenage survivor of Florida's high school massacre last week which suggest he was not really there and cannot be trusted because he is the son of a retired FBI agent.
The tweet mocks 17-year-old David Hogg, a student journalist who fled gunman Nikolas Cruz along with his classmates at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Wednesday.
Since the shooting, Hogg has been relentless in his calls for tighter gun laws and has repeatedly asked the president to do more to end gun violence.
In one interview he told how his 51-year-old father, Kevin, was a retired FBI agent and said it was 'disgusting' for the president and his family to blame the shooting on the bureau which missed several warning signs that Cruz was dangerous.

On Saturday, Twitter user Thomas Pine shared a link to a True Pundit story which poked holes in Hogg's comments.
It touted him as an 'outspoken, Trump-hating school shooting survivor' and the headline of the story was: 'MSM Helps Prop Up Incompetent Bureau.'
In the body of the story, the writer wrote cruelly: 'David Hogg is a school shooting survivor in Florida.
'At least that is what the mainstream media has told us. We wouldn’t be surprised by anything involving the FBI at this point.'
Trump Jr, who is an avid hunter, liked it among a string of other conservative tweets which suggested gun reform would do nothing to prevent more mass shootings.

'While the media allowed Hogg to adorn us with his worldly teen views on the Constitution, they conveniently left out the part where the FBI was warned that the Florida school shooter had promised to shoot up a school — at least twice — long before the massacre that killed 17 students last week.'
It then appeared to blame Hogg for not telling his parents or school officials about their concerns about Cruz.
'If Hogg knew the shooter would snap — as he and other students have professed — perhaps he could have told his father about it.

 • 'Oh but wait, his father was in the FBI. It would not have mattered anyway.

'That’s the funny thing about the limelight, kid. Often the lights can come crashing down on your head.'
The New York Post reports that Donald Jr. liked a second tweet which repeated the criticism.
It was written by The Daily Ledger host Graham Ledger and said: 'Could it be that this student is running cover for his dad who Works as an FBI agent at the Miami field office Which botched tracking down the Man behind the Valentine day massacre? Just wondering. Just connecting some dots.'
Hogg, who is organizing a rally in Washington DC next month with his classmates, said he was 'sickened' by the president's son's Twitter activity.

Donald Jr. is of the view that tighter gun laws would not prevent gun deaths. He has liked several tweets which suggest as much but is yet to share his opinion in his own words

'I just think it's a testament to the sick immaturity and broken state of our government when these people feel the need to pedal conspiracy theories about people that were in a school shooting where 17 people died and it just makes me sick.
The Serious Side - part 4 - Page 14 4969CE5500000578-5414619-While_he_has_not_tweeted_himself_about_the_atrocity_Donald_Jr_ha-a-19_1519158552177
While he has not tweeted himself about the atrocity, Donald Jr. has been busy supporting others who do not share Hogg's view of his father's policies. Above, a tweet he liked on Monday which says 'no one cares' about how many male suicides per gun there
'It's immature, rude, and inhuman for these people to destroy the people trying to prevent the death of the future of America because they won't,' he told BuzzFeed.
Over the weekend, Donald Jr. is said to have had multiple, lengthy conversations with his father at Mar-a-Lago about the issue of gun reform.
Sources cited by The Daily Beast said the pair spoke often while televisions were in front of them playing the interviews of survivors like Hogg.

In a tweet which outraged shooting survivors on Saturday, Trump appeared to blame the FBI for the mass murder
Donald Jr. implored his father to maintain his position on the issue and to focus instead on mental health checks, it was claimed.
Donald Jr. is in India on business.
Since the Parkland shooting, his own tweets have been limited to the FBI's investigation into Russian meddling but he has liked several others about gun control.
All suggest that a change in the law would not have prevented the massacre and focus instead on monitoring gun owners' mental health.
President Trump has said he is working on 'many fronts' with Congress in wake of the shooting but he is yet to promise any reform on the law on owning or purchasing guns.

He appeared to blame the FBI for the shooting last week in a tweet which outraged other survivors.
Among them was Hogg who asked why he and other politicians relied on the NRA's donations.
'If you can’t get elected without taking money from child murderers, why are you running?' he told CNN.
He added that his father and other former FBI agents were among the 'hardest working people in the world'.
Neither Kevin nor David's mother Rebecca has spoken out on the issue since their son stormed the nation's media last week.
The family moved to Florida from California in 2014.
David's mother Rebecca advocates for Planned Parenthood on social media.

She also appears to be a fan of CNN, on which he has appeared numerous times this past week and which the Trumps notoriously dislike.

Earlier Tuesday, Harrison said he did not share the same opinion as Kelly.
'I was just made aware that my aide made an insensitive and inappropriate allegation about Parkland students today. ... I do not share his opinion and he did so without my knowledge,' the tweet read.
The 61-year-old Republican aide came under fire for telling a Tampa Bay Times reporter that two Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students - Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg - were 'actors' who 'travel to various crisis when they happen'.
‘Both kids in the picture are not students,' Kelly said in an email, referencing a screenshot of Gonzalez and Hogg doing an interview with CNN about stricter gun laws after former Marjory Stoneman student 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire killing 17 people.

To back his absurd claims, Kelly linked to a YouTube video of Hogg in a news clip from California over a dispute with a lifeguard about a boogie board. Many people commented on the video wondering why Hogg was in California labeling him as a 'crisis actor'.

‘There is a clip on you tube that shows Mr Hogg out in California (I guess he transferred?), Kelly wrote in the email.
Following backlash from his comment, Kelly took to Twitter to say he ‘made a mistake whereas I tried to inform a reporter of information relating to his story regarding a school shooting. This was not my responsibility. I meant no disrespect to the students or parents of Parkland.’

Gun-control groups take out NY Times ad naming lawmakers who have accepted NRA donations: report

Two gun-control advocacy groups have purchased a massive ad in the New York Times to call out lawmakers who have accepted money from the National Rifle Association, according to the Associated Press.

Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America spent $230,000 on the two-page ad, which will run on Wednesday, the AP reported.

The ad reportedly lists about 100 names of lawmakers as well as their phone numbers and the amount they have received from the NRA.

Politico reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere later tweeted an image of the ad.

Here’s the 2 page, $230,000 Everytown ad running in the New York Times tomorrow, listing phone numbers of members of Congress to call: https://t.co/nSKXhHnrqt pic.twitter.com/VLbJG7dPTq

— Edward-Isaac Dovere (@IsaacDovere) February 21, 2018
“These members of Congress take NRA money, but refuse to take action to pass gun safety legislation,” the ad reads.

On the opposite page, the ad features a photo of students exiting the Florida high school during the mass shooting last week and a quote from one of the survivors: “We’re children. You guys are the adults … get something done.”
The debate surrounding gun control has found new energy in the wake of the Florida shooting – survivors and their parents have been making vocal pleas to lawmakers to act on gun control, and have also organized marches and rallies.

President Trump on Tuesday said he had directed the Justice Department to look into regulations on bump stocks, the device used in the Las Vegas massacre that modifies semi-automatic weapons to fire hundreds of rounds per minute. He also called for expanded background checks.

Florida Lawmakers Vote Down Bill to Ban Assault Weapons

(PARKLAND, Fla.) — Students who survived the Florida school shooting began a journey Tuesday to the state Capitol to urge lawmakers to prevent another massacre, but within hours the gun-friendly Legislature had effectively halted any possibility of banning assault-style rifles like the one used in the attack.

The legislative action further energized the teens as they prepared to confront legislators who have quashed gun-control efforts for decades in a state where 1.3 million people have concealed carry permits.

“They’re voting to have shootings continually happen. These people who voted down the bill haven’t experienced what we did. I want to say to them, ‘It could be you,'” 16-year-old Noah Kaufman said as he made the 400-mile (640-kilometer) trip to Tallahassee.

Three buses carried 100 students who, in the aftermath of the attack that killed 17 people, want to revive the gun-control movement. The teens carried sleeping bags and pillows and hugged their parents as they departed, many wearing burgundy T-shirts in their school colors.

They spent the seven-hour ride checking their phones, watching videos and reading comments on social media about the shooting, some of which accused them of being liberal pawns.

As the grieving Florida students demanded action on guns, President Donald Trump on Tuesday directed the Justice Department to move to ban devices like the rapid-fire bump stocks used in last year’s Las Vegas massacre. It was a small sign of movement on the gun violence issue that has long tied Washington in knots.

“We must do more to protect our children,” said Trump, a strong and vocal supporter of gun rights. He added that his administration was working hard to respond to the Florida rampage.

Meanwhile at the Florida Statehouse, a Democratic representative asked for a procedural move that would have allowed the Republican-controlled House to consider a ban on large-capacity magazines and assault-style rifles such as the AR-15 that was wielded by the suspect, Nickolas Cruz.

The bill had been assigned to three committees but was not scheduled for a hearing. The House quickly nixed the Democratic motion. The vote broke down along party lines, and Republicans criticized Democrats for forcing the vote.

Read More: Everything You Need to Know About March For Our Lives

Because the committees will not meet again before the legislative session ends March 9, the move essentially extinguishes hope that lawmakers would vote on any sweeping measures to restrict assault rifles, although other proposals could still be considered.

“No one in the world with the slightest little hint of a soul isn’t moved by this tragedy,” Republican strategist Rick Wilson said. “The discussion has to be a longer, bigger and broader discussion.”

Lizzie Eaton, a junior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, spent the day lobbying senators of both parties and concluded that lawmakers were “just not listening to us.”

The vote was “heartbreaking,” she said. “But we’re not going to stop.”

The students planned to hold a rally Wednesday to put more pressure on the Legislature.

“I really think they are going to hear us out,” said Chris Grady, a high school senior aboard the bus.

The Feb. 14 attack initially appeared to overcome the resistance of some in the state’s political leadership, which has rebuffed gun restrictions since Republicans took control of both the governor’s office and the Legislature in 1999. However, many members of the party still have strong resistance to any gun-control measures.

Republican leaders in the House and Senate say they will consider raising age restrictions for gun purchases and temporarily revoking someone’s guns if that person is deemed a threat to others. Gov. Rick Scott, also a Republican, convened groups assigned to propose measures for protecting schools from gun violence.

Lawmakers will probably say that getting a new bill passed is nearly impossible with only two and a half weeks left in the legislative session. Some lawmakers who are thinking of running on a statewide ticket are mindful of their sensitive positions, since gun owners make up huge voting blocs in some parts of the state, especially the Panhandle.

Wilson said he knows the students “want something to happen,” and they need “a moment to come and make their case.”

But, he said, “the thought that you get to wave a wand and change the law is something that is probably going to collide with reality.”

The Parkland students also plan to meet Wednesday with top legislative leaders, including Corcoran and Senate President Joe Negron.

Florida has a reputation for expanding gun rights. Negron sponsored a 2011 bill that Scott signed into law that banned cities and counties from regulating gun and ammunition sales.

Authorities said Cruz, 19, had a string of run-ins with school authorities that ended with his expulsion. Police were repeatedly called to his house throughout his childhood. His lawyers said there were many warning signs that he was mentally unstable and potentially violent. Yet he legally purchased a semi-automatic rifle.

The Senate is also considering boosting spending on mental health programs for schools and giving law-enforcement greater power to involuntarily hold someone considered a danger to themselves. The chamber will also look at a proposal to deputize a teacher or someone else at school so they are authorized to have a gun.

Kyle Kashuv, a 16-year-old student at the high school, said he was pro-gun prior to the shooting.

“I had no issue with anyone having a gun of any caliber,” said Kashuv, as he rode in the bus to Tallahassee. “I was all for it. But after the situation, I realized we have some issues in our society and it has to be addressed.

The fact that someone who was so steadfast in support of gun rights now acknowledges the need for changes “really shows how important what we’re doing is,” he said.

No I'm sorry deputize teachers or someone to have a gun absolutely not. We have cops who can't hit the side of a barn yet you want civilians to open fire in a school.

I just saw an article where this teacher body slammed a kid in class so now we want to give them guns so they can shoot these kids.

Cops have their guns grabbed what happens when a teacher isn't paying attention it takes a minute for something to happen.

Teachers have enough stress having to shoot some one's child should never be one of them.

A Phoenix man said he decided to destroy his AR-15 assault rifles after one was used in the fatal Florida school shooting that left 17 dead.
'I don't think my weapons would ever be used to kill people, but it's the point, it's that I'm willing, as a gun owner, to sacrifice being able to own something like that for the greater good of society,' Aaron LaRoque told KTAR News 92.3 FM
LaRoque said that after he saw a New York man do the same with his weapons over the weekend, he was inspired to talk to his family.
'To me, the whole point is to say: "I don't agree with these anymore - people owning these assault weapons" and that's what they are: assault weapons,' LaRoque said.

'AR-15s seem to be meant for killing people and we don't want a part of that.

Former Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke has suggested the teenager survivors of the Florida high shooting massacre are being influenced by Democratic billionaire George Soros as they push for gun control.
Clarke, a prominent supporter of President Trump, took to Twitter on Wednesday to insinuate that the recent rallies for gun reform are actually a political effort driven by Democrats.
'The well ORGANIZED effort by Florida school students demanding gun control has GEORGE SOROS' FINGERPRINTS all over it,' Clarke tweeted.
'It is similar to how he hijacked and exploited black people's emotion regarding police use of force incidents into the COP HATING Black Lives Matter movement.'

Ex-Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke, a prominent President Trump supporter, took to Twitter on Wednesday to insinuate recent rallies for gun reform was being driven by Democrats
Soros, a liberal billionaire philanthropist, has been vocal about his opposition to guns in the past and has donated thousands of dollars to campaigns for gun violence prevention following previous mass shootings.

Clarke resigned from his post as sheriff so he could join a political action committee that supports Trump.
His tweet comes after student survivors of the deadly Marjory Stoneman Douglas High shooting headed to the state Capitol on Tuesday to urge lawmakers to prevent another massacre.
The students also planned to hold a rally on Wednesday to put more pressure on the Legislature.
Meanwhile, Clarke is slated to appear at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, in the time slot directly following President Trump's speech.

Marjory Stoneman students who have been vocal about gun control have been accused by some as being liberal pawns in the wake of the shooting.
Some right-wing websites and others on social media have even claimed that students who survived the ordeal are actually actors working to push the Democratic agenda.
One district secretary working for Rep. Shawn Harrison was fired on Tuesday after he accused two survivors of the Parkland school shooting of being crisis actors.
Harrison tweeted on Tuesday that his aide, Benjamin Kelly, had been let go following the disparaging comments about students who escaped last week's massacre alive.
'Tonight Mr Kelly was terminated from his position as my District Secretary. I am appalled at and strongly denounce his comments about the Parkland students,' he wrote.
'I am again sorry for any pain this has caused the grieving families of this tragedy.
The Republican aide came under fire for telling a Tampa Bay Times reporter that two students - Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg - were 'actors' who 'travel to various crisis when they happen'.

Students gather on the steps of the old Florida Capitol protesting gun violence in Tallahassee on Wednesday
'Both kids in the picture are not students,' Kelly said in an email, referencing a screenshot of Gonzalez and Hogg doing an interview with CNN about stricter gun laws.
To back his absurd claims, Kelly linked to a YouTube video of Hogg in a news clip from California over a dispute with a lifeguard about a boogie board. Many people commented on the video wondering why Hogg was in California labeling him as a 'crisis actor'.
As the grieving Florida students continued to demand action on guns, Trump on Tuesday directed the Justice Department to move to ban devices like bump stocks, which turn legal firearms into machine guns, and were used in last year's Las Vegas massacre.
It was a small sign of movement on the gun violence issue that has long tied Washington in knots.
'We must do more to protect our children,' said Trump, who ran for president as a vocal supporter of Second Amendment rights.
Trump later tweeted, 'Whether we are Republican or Democrat, we must now focus on strengthening Background Checks!'

Thousands of students have walked out of their classrooms in protest over gun laws as they showed support for the teen survivors of Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High shooting who are rallying in the state's Capitol.
Students from across the country participated in the mass walk out on Wednesday to honor the 17 people killed in the deadly massacre in Parkland, Florida a week ago.
About 2,000 students, parents and teachers held hands and chanted outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High wearing the school's colors and brandishing signs.
They chanted 'never again' and 'I will not be a victim' and joined hands and held them aloft at about 2.20pm - around the time the February 14 rampage began.

It took place as thousands of others, including massacre survivors, converged on Florida's Capitol to ramp up the pressure on lawmakers to enact tougher gun control measures.

'We're what's making the change. We're going to talk to these politicians... We're going to keep pushing until something is done because people are dying and this can't happen anymore,' said Alfonso Calderon, a 16-year-old junior.
'My classmates and I are probably the most determined group of people you will ever meet,' said student Sofie Whitney. 'People are talking about how we aren't serious because we're children, but... we're serious.'
Several hundred people protested outside of the Florida House of Representatives while lawmakers were in session on Wednesday.
The protesters were upset that the Republican-controlled chamber refused to take up a measure a day earlier that would have banned assault rifles and large capacity magazines.
The crowd burst into chants of 'vote them out' and 'we're students united, we'll never be divided.'
The noise could be heard inside the chamber but business went on uninterrupted.

Hundreds of students from a number of Maryland and DC schools walked out of their classrooms and made a trip to the US Capitol and the White House to call for gun legislation
Students across the state staged the walk out exactly a week after gunman Nikolas Cruz stormed the hallways of Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
Hundreds of teens from Western High School in Davie carried large signs, each listing the name of a school where a shooting has taken place, along with the date of the shooting and the number of dead.
Students at schools across Broward and Miami-Dade counties in South Florida also participated in the the walk out.
Other protesters from schools in Texas, Maryland and Virginia also showed their support on Wednesday.
In Washington, hundreds of local high school students also gathered outside the White House chanting slogans against the National Rifle Association (NRA), the powerful gun lobby, and demanding action from President Donald Trump.
One school district in Houston, Texas threatened to suspend students who staged a walk out or caused disruption to protest gun laws.
Needville ISD Superintendent Curtis Rhodes sent a letter home to parents warning that students risked a three-day suspension for protesting, the Houston Chronicle reports.
Faced with the massive outpouring of grief and outrage over the Parkland shooting, Trump was to meet with parents, students and teachers at the White House on Wednesday to discuss school safety.

Survivors of the Parkland shooting and their parents begged President Donald Trump to act on gun violence Wednesday at a tearful listening session at the White House.
Parkland parent Andrew Pollack said that he was 'pissed' as he described his daughter Meadow's horrific death to the president and other families present - she was shot nine times.
'I'm very angry that this happened, because it keeps happening,' the bereaved father said, declaring that 9/11 'happened once, and they fixed everything. How many schools, how many children have to get shot?'
Pollack told Trump, 'It stops here with this administration and me. I'm not going to sleep until it's fixed. And Mr. President, we're going to fix it. Because I'm going to fix it. I'm not going to rest.'

'Fix it! It should have been one school shooting and we should have fixed it! And I'm pissed! Because my daughter I'm not going to see again. She's not here. She's not here. She's at, in North Lauderdale, in King David Cemetery. That's where I go to see my kid now.'

Another Parkland parent, Carey Gruber, plead with Trump, 'It's not left and right, it's a human issue, and we have to stop this.'
Michele Abt, whose son Carson Abt survived the shooting and was at the White House, told fellow parents, 'I feel for all of these families, my heart is just broken, for my whole community.
'I feel for all the families who have lost, and I feel for the ones that are here because we now have almost a guilt like I have. Why not my child? Which I feel bad saying. I'm happy that he's here with me. I feel so bad for all of you who have lost so many, and I'm just begging for a change. We need a change,' she said.
President Donald Trump's was holding a listening session at the White House today with school shooting survivors that included attendees of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
The discussion with parents and teachers connected to the Parkland, Florida, shooting included more than a dozen Marjory Stoneman students.
According to the White House, persons affected by the Sandy Hook and Columbine shootings were also in attendance.
Nicole Hockely, mother of Sandy Hook Elementary's Dylan Hockely, told Trump, 'This is not difficult. These deaths are preventable. And I implore you: Consider your own children. You don't want to be me. No parent does. And you have the ability to make a difference and save lives today. Please don't waste this."
The president spoke briefly at the top and several times in the middle of the meeting that aired live on national television.
Trump promised midway through that 'two minutes after this meeting' he would begin working on the issue and we will 'solve it together.'
'And we don't want others to go through the kind of pain that you've gone through,' he told them.
After listening to the parents for some time, Trump said he'd be looking at concealed carry for teachers. Polling the room, he asked which parents were for it and which are against it, saying that 'certainly it's controversial.'
Parkland student Samuel Zeif asked Trump to ban guns like the one the shooter used.
'I don't understand why I can still go in a score and buy a weapon of war, an AR. I was reading today that a person 20 years old walked into a store and bought an AR-15 in five minutes with an expired ID,' he said. 'How is it that easy to buy this type of weapon? How have we not stopped this after Columbine, after Sandy Hook? I'm sitting with a mother that lost her son. It's still happening.'
Student Julia Cordover told the president she was at the session 'so that no child, no person in this world' will ever 'have to go through something so tragic and horrific.'
Trump visited Parkland survivors on Friday during a blitz of Florida's Broward County, where he made stops at a hospital and police department to encourage first responders and shooting victims.
But he announced a listening session as his administration took on water for a lack of meaningful action in the wake of the Florida shooting that took place 40 miles away from his Winter White House.
Students marched outside of the White House all day on Wednesday as Trump prepared to hold a listening session inside with Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and his invited guests.
'We're going to work very hard. Very difficult, very complex but we're going to find a solution,' he said at the end, soliciting ideas to reduce gun violence.
Trump revealed his desire at the end of the event that he was looking 'very strong into age' and the 'mental health aspect' of the shootings.
'All I can say is we're fighting very hard for you. We will not stop,' he promised. 'To me there can be nothing worse than what you've gone through.'
At an event on Tuesday, Trump recalled his hospital visit a few nights before, telling Medal of Valor recipients that he was 'greatly moved, greatly moved' by the survivors' strength and resilience 'and heartbroken for the families whose loved ones were so cruelly torn from them forever. Forever and ever.'
'We cannot imagine the depths of their anguish, but we can pledge the strength of our resolve. And we must do more to protect our children. We have to do more to protect our children,' he said.
The White House says that Trump is holding listening events like the one today as part of his decision-making process about what those next steps should be and that he has open mind about potential reforms.
According to Axios, Trump is privately shopping changes to age minimums on gun purchases. Guns like the AR-15 that the Florida teen who assailed Marjory Stoneman Douglas used could be restricted to buyers age 21 and above under that proposition.
Kneecapping Trump and the Republican Party on Wednesday, Connecticut's Democratic Governor Dannel Malloy said that opponents of universal background checks will continue to 'have blood on your hands' until they make basic reforms the nation's 'insane' gun laws.
Malloy argued on CNN that 97 percent of Americans support background checks for all firearms sales, including those that take place at gun shows.
'It is insane to allow that to happen. If you support that legislation, if you, if you vote to allow that to happen in Washington or in your state capitol, you do have blood on your hands,' Malloy posited.

Connecticut's Democratic Governor Dannel Malloy said Wednesday that opponents of universal background checks 'have blood on your hands' as he waged a war against the country's 'insane' gun laws
The fiery rhetoric was a curtain-raiser to Trump's listening session with parents, teachers and survivors of school shootings that the White House has said will include people affected by the tragedies at Columbine and Sandy Hook, an elementary school in Malloy's state.
A mentally ill man shot and killed 20 children and six adults before committing suicide at the Newtown, Connecticut, school in December of 2012.
Federal legislators tried and failed to pass new background check requirements several months after the shocking rampage. Guns that are sold by private sellers remain exempt from federal background check requirements.
One of the early actions Trump took in his presidency was to withdraw an Obama-era initiative making it more difficult for people suffering from mental health issues to buy guns.
Malloy said last week that Trump and the Republican Members of Congress who passed the bill that served as a vehicle for the rollback 'have blood on their hands.'
'What the hell is the president of the United States doing signing that bill?' he said a day after the Parkland, Florida, shooting. 'And what the hell are members of the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States doing voting on that? And why would you puff your chest about making guns available to people with mental health challenges?'
The Connecticut Democrat implored legislators to 'just do sane things' in his appearance Wednesday morning on CNN's 'New Day' program, telling them, 'Let's not sell guns to people who have protective orders against them. Let's not sell guns to people who have mental illness. Let's not sell guns to people who are on the no-fly list.
'We can't even do that in our country. That's insane,' Malloy stated.
President Trump called on politicians on both sides of the aisle to back stronger background checks for prospective gun owners on Tuesday evening.
But he has not endorsed a mandatory bill like the one Malloy is pushing federal lawmakers to pass.
'Whether we are Republican or Democrat, we must now focus on strengthening Background Checks!' was all the president tweeted.

His push for stricter gun controls comes after thousands of students and parents have called on his administration to implement changes to prevent future mass shootings.
Hours earlier, Trump took action to outlaw bump stocks like the one used in the Las Vegas massacre last fall.
'I signed a memorandum directing the Attorney General to propose regulations to ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns,' Trump said .
The bump stocks directive, which he pointedly brought up at a White House Medal of Valor ceremony, followed his press secretary's announcement minutes before that the president had ordered his administration to look at ways it could unilaterally deter mass shootings like the one in Parkland.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders also said that Trump had not closed the door on new gun controls, including an assault weapons ban that is unpopular with the president's base.
Sanders said Tuesday at her first briefing since the shooting that Trump had also directed his Health and Human Services department to review its rule-making ability and to advise him on possible improvements it could make to the mental health system.
Trump has not provided specifics about what he wants new background checks to entail of what changes he envisions to the mental health system.
He's waiting until after his listening session with survivors of mass shootings and a meeting the following day with state and local leaders.
After the talks, with the input of his administration, Sanders said that Trump will come up with concrete proposals on how to mitigate rampages like the one in Parkland.
'Unfortunately, when horrific tragedies like this happen, everybody wants a quick and a simple answer, but there isn't one.' she told reporters. 'There's not a quick and there's not a simple answer.'

Trump is seen above with Attorney General Jeff Sessions at Tuesday's White House event
Students are planning marches in cities all around the nation, including Washington, D.C. to demand action next month.
'President Trump, I think it's really important that you listen to us, We are your constituents, and you're working for us. And kids are dead,' one student organizer, Sofie Whitney, told CNN just after Trump's bum stock announcement. 'It's really symbolic that we're the ones doing it because we're the ones who experienced it.'
Riding on a school bus at the time of the interview, Whitney, said Trump's ban is 'obviously, that's a step forward.'
'But there's still so much more to be done,' she said. 'Because even though that would have stopped deaths in Las Vegas, it still wouldn't have helped when it came to my school.'
The gesture to ban bump stocks immediately came under attack from Democrats, including Dianne Feinstein, who is a co-sponsor of legislation in the Senate to ban bump stocks.
'I’m glad President Trump finally understands that bump stocks should be illegal. Now he needs to follow through with action and support our bill to ban these deadly devices,' she said in a statement.

ATF is already in the middle of a rule-making process for bump stocks. 'I expect that these critical regulations will be finalized very soon,' Trump said Tuesday
Feinstein said that ATF currently does not have the authority to do what Trump directed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to do.
'The agency made this clear in a 2013 letter to Congress, writing that "stocks of this type are not subject to the provisions of federal firearms statutes." '
ATF is already in the middle of a rule-making process for bump stocks. A comment period on the proposed regulations ended several weeks ago.
On Tuesday, Feinstein said that the rule-making process could be tied up in court for years, if ATF follows through on Trump's direction 'and that would mean bump stocks would continue to be sold.'
'Legislation is the only answer,' she stated. 'Words are one thing, Mr. President, but we need meaningful action. If you want these devices off the street, call congressional Republicans and tell them to stop blocking our bill.'
Trump said Tuesday at the White House event that he had directed his AG to 'clarify whether certain bump stock devices, like the one used in Las Vegas, are illegal under current law' and that review began in December.
'I expect that these critical regulations will be finalized very soon,' Trump said Tuesday from the White House's East Room.
The president had come under scrutiny, though, in the days since the Florida shooting for his relative silence on the issue of gun violence after he failed to mention firearms, aside from a reference to gunfire that took place at Marjory Stoneman, in a national address the day after.
He insisted at the White House event on Tuesday afternoon that school safety is a 'top priority' of his administration.
'The key in all of these efforts, as I said in my remarks the day after the shooting, is that we cannot merely take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference,' he said. 'We must actually make a difference.'
The White House on Monday said that Trump is mulling legislation to strengthen existing background check and federal firearms laws in the wake of last week's Florida massacre.
Sanders said Trump has been in touch with the Republican author of a Senate bill that would provide the carrot and the stick to states and federal agencies to provide better comply with background check requirements and those conversations are ongoing.
'While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the President is supportive of efforts to improve the Federal background check system,' she said in a Monday statement.
Sanders did not go into further detail on Tuesday on what specifically the president would be willing to support when it comes to background checks or other gun controls.
'But we want to make sure that we're addressing the problem. And we want to make sure that we're meeting and talking with as many people that not only are affected, but that play in this process as possible,' she stated.
The president's spokeswoman suggested that Trump might even be willing to endorse gun control legislation that has been repudiated by Republicans like an assault weapons ban.
'I don't have any specific announcements, but we haven't closed the door on any front,' she said. 'Again, that's the next several days and weeks will be -- to have conversations and to see what this process looks like, and to see what areas we can help make changes to, and in what places that we can do better.'

Protestors join in on a grassroots movement during a rally against gun violence in downtown Los Angeles on Monday in response to the tragic shooting last week in Parkland
The Senate legislation that the White House has said that Trump would be willing to back looks to 'fix' the National Instant Criminal Background Check System legislation has the backing of key senators on both sides of the aisle.
Cornyn has not commented on the White House's suggestion Monday that it would be willing to get behind his bill, depending on how the finalized text is worded.

Parkland survivors plan gun control march on Washington DC

Legislators unsuccessfully attempted to pass legislation in the Senate placing new restrictions on firearms sales in 2013 after the Sandy Hook shooting in Murphy's home state.
Then-President Barack Obama aggressively chased the reforms but none of the measures earned the required 60 votes in bitterly divided upper chamber.
A assault weapons ban championed by Feinstein and background check legislation spearheaded by Sens.

THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION'S STATEMENT AGAINST IMPLEMENTING AGE RESTRICTIONS

Federal law prohibits adults under the age of 21 from purchasing a handgun from a licensed firearm dealer.
Legislative proposals that prevent law-abiding adults aged 18-20 years old from acquiring rifles and shotguns effectively prohibits them [from] purchasing any firearm, thus depriving them of their Constitutional right to self-protection. We need serious proposals to prevent violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from acquiring firearms.
Passing a law that makes it illegal for a 20 year-old to purchase a shotgun for hunting or an adult single mother from purchasing the most effective self-defense rifle on the market punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals.

You should also have a nationwide gun law. It doesn't help when it's forbidden for a 18 year old guy to buy a cettain gun when he only has to drive a few miles to the next state to buy it legally there...

I don't question the 2nd Amandment in general since I think that, when your next neighbor lives ten miles away or you go for a hike in the nature and there are boars etc, you may just feel safer - as long as you respect that that's a fatal weapon, designed to kill people, and that you make sure nobody else has access to them. And you can't tell me that any private person needs 20 semi-automatic guns for self-defending.

But in general I'd say that it's a subjective feeling of safety...

I don't have a problem with people having guns, for their safety I'm fine with that.

The problem is that we have people who have bad tempers and will shoot for the most ridiculous reason. Someone cutting you off on the highway is no reason to shoot anyone.

There just is no way to make people understand a gun is a weapon if you don't know what your doing you will kill someone.

Last year there were many reports of people playing with a gun or showing  it off and they killed someone.

There needs to be more training and teaching of proper care of a gun and people need to have proper places to keep their guns out of harms way.

How we enforce this I don't know.

I think toughper laws will help especially for assault weapons a few less high powered guns in the wrong hands is a good start.

Trump tells school shooting victims he wants one in five teachers armed with concealed carry weapons - giving guns to MORE people than the Army

 • President Trump hosted grieving students and parents from the Florida school shooting massacre at the White House

 • After hearing ideas from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students, he put forward his own idea

 • He touted concealed-carry permits for teachers

 • Said it could involve up to 20 per cent of the teaching force

 • Proposal would lead to 640,000 force of armed teachers

 • Suggested Marines or former servicemembers could participate

 • Said they would be spread throughout the school

 • He had tweeted in 2016: 'Crooked Hillary said that I want guns brought into the school classroom. Wrong!'

 • President Donald Trump put forward a proposal to arm up to a fifth of teachers after hearing emotional appeals for action from students and parents still grieving from the Florida school massacre.

Trump floated the conceal-carry proposal after a White House listening session, where some students called for regulation of assault weapons, an angry parent called for hardened school security, and others just demanded 'change.'
After listening from a circle of participants, Trump floated his own idea, calling for arming teachers and coaches, and even bringing in Marines.
'Lets say you had 20 percent of your teaching force, because that’s pretty much the number' Trump said, describing how it might work.

There are an estimated 3.2 million teachers or full-time equivalent teachers – which would put the armed force at 640,000 – larger than the U.S. Army, which is set to drop to 450,000 at the end of the year.

Trump said the teachers with guns would be 'adept at firearms' and would get 'great training.'
Trump also mentioned Marines, saying those armed on a sprawling campus like the one in Parkland, Florida would be 'spread evenly,' rather than having a single security guard.
He acknowledged it was a controversial idea. 'We can understand both sides. Certainly it's controversial,' he said.

The president's proposal seemed to be an about-face from where he stood during the 2016 campaign, if Trump's Twitter account had been any indicator.
Trump had tweeted that May: 'Crooked Hillary said that I want guns brought into the school classroom. Wrong!'
That was in response to Trump receiving an endorsement from the NRA and Clinton hitting him for it.
'This is someone running to be president of the United States of America, a country facing a gun violence epidemic and he's talking about more guns in our schools,' Clinton said on May 21, 2016.
Trump's tweet came later that night.
Though when appearing on Fox News the next day, the GOP nominee tried to have it both ways.
'I don't want to have guns in classrooms,' he said, objecting to the tweet. 'Although, in some cases, teachers should have guns in classrooms, frankly. Because teachers are, you know. Things that are going on in our schools are unbelievable.'
'You look at some of our schools, unbelievable what’s going on,' he repeated.
'But I’m not advocating guns in classrooms. But remember, in some cases, and a lot of people have made this case, teachers should be able to have guns. Trained teachers should be able to have guns in classrooms,' candidate Trump said.

Senator Marco Rubio was slammed as 'pathetically weak' Wednesday night as parents and victims of the massacre in Parkland, Florida, took the stage to confront him at a Town Hall meeting.
Rubio received a chorus of boos when he said that a ban on assault weapons would not have prevented the fatal shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
The Town Hall meeting was hosted by CNN's Jake Tapper, who noted at the beginning that President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Rick Scott both denied requests to attend.
One of the first parents to take the stage was Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime was shot in the back as she ran away from the shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, on Valentines Day.

The Town Hall meeting was hosted by CNN 's Jake Tapper, who noted at the beginning that President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Rick Scott both denied request to attend. Pictured are Marjory Stoneman Douglas students at the Town Hall
'Your comments this week and those of our president are pathetically weak. Look at me and tell me you will do something about guns,' the bereaved father implored.
'Were guns a factor?'
Rubio did say that yes - guns were a factor, but insisted that an all-out ban on assault and semi-automatic weapons was not the answer.
'I will support the banning of bump stocks,' Rubio, who has received $9,900 in campaign donations from the National Rifle Association, said. A student at one point in the rally referred to these donations as 'blood money.'
'I think what you're asking is about the assault weapon ban. If I believed that the passing of that law would prevent this, I would support it, but it does not,' the senator continued.
He said his reason for not supporting the ban is because it would outlaw roughly 200 types of guns - assault rifles - while the purchase of over 2,000 types of 'nearly identical' guns would still be legal.
'Rather than try to chase every loophole that's created, we instead should make sure that dangerous criminals, people who are deranged, cannot buy any gun of any kind,' he said.
'That's what I believe a better answer will be.'
But Guttenberg didn't give up, and pointed out that it would at least be a start.
Rubio went on to say he believes men like Cruz shouldn't be able to buy any kind of gun, and said he doesn't think 18-year-olds should be able to purchase firearms either.
'I absolutely believe that in this country if you are 18 years of age you should not be able to buy a rifle an I will support a law that takes that right away,' he said.

Bringing up the influence that the NRA has on politicians in the United States - student survivor Cameron Kasky took the podium to ask the senator if he would stop accepting donations from the organization in the future.
The question sparked a debate between the high school junior and Rubio, who said he would not refuse future NRA donations because 'people buy into my agenda - and I do support the Second Amendment.
'I will always accept the help of anyone who agrees with my agenda.'
The crowd once again erupted in with waves of loud booing.
Another student, Ryan Schnachter, whose younger brother Alex was killed in the massacre, told his Congressman that he and his friends are now afraid to go back to be school.
'My friends and I are worried that we are going to be murdered in our classrooms,' he said.
'What reassurances can you give me, and what specifically are you going to do to make sure we don't have this fear?'
Florida Representative Ted Deutch, a Democrat, said he couldn't offer any help immediately, but could just tell the teenager where he stands and what he plans to do when he's back in Washington.
'As a starter, next week when we go back to Washington, we're going to introduce legislation to make sure that assault weapons are illegal in every part of this country,' he assured Schachter.
'The best way for us to show that is to take action in Washington, in Tallahassee, to get these weapons of war off of our streets.'

Florida Representative Ted Deutch, a Democrat, said he couldn't offer any help immediately to students who were afraid to go to school because they were worried they might be murdered. He said the best thing to do would be to wait until they were back in Washington
Senior Ryan Deitsch thanked Rubio for his time, and didn't quiz him on specific policy points, but instead questioned why it was up to the students to prevent these attacks from happening.
'Why do we have to be the ones to do this? Why do we have to speak out to the capitol?' he asked the politician.
'Why do we have to march on Washington, just to safe innocent lives?'
A senior who survived the shooting, Chris Grady, told Rubio that students need lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to come together now more than ever.
'We need you and your colleagues on both sides to come together with us and find compromise if we are to ever solve this epidemic that is plaguing our country,' he elegantly implored.
He then asked Rubio to agree that there is 'no place in our society for large-capacity magazines capable of firing 15 to 30 rounds, and if not, more.'
Rubio said he was glad someone asked him that question, admitting that after last week's tragedy he was reconsidering his previous stance on this issue.
'I traditionally have not supported looking at magazine clip size,' Rubio explained.
'And after this and some of the details I've learned about it, I'm reconsidering that position. And I'll tell you why. Because while it may not prevent an attack, it may save lives in an attack.'
Also on the podium were local politicians, including Democratic Senator Bill Nelson.
Tapper asked Nelson if it was a mistake that Democrats didn't address gun control in 2009 and 2010 when they controlled the House, the Senate and the White House, to which Nelson responded an easy yes.
'When the Senate had 60 votes, as we did, until Ted Kennedy died, that’s how we got the Affordable Care Act passed, and yes, gun legislation under those circumstances should have been considered, because there had been a lot of massacres up to that point.' he said.
But now, he explained, there aren't many senators who will work to pass new gun control laws, particularly because so many have been financially supported by the NRA.

When it was back to Rubio, one of the teachers at the school at the time of the attack took the stage and asked why the president and other Republican lawmakers were proposing teachers be armed on school grounds.
'I'm a registered Republican. I voted for Mr Trump. I still, you know, support the Second Amendment,' Ashley Kruth, a culinary instructor at Stoneman Douglas, said.
'When I had hundreds of terrified children that were running at me, my question to that is, am I supposed to get extra training now to serve and protect on top of educate these children?'
Rubio, though, explained that he was at odds with the president over this particular issue.
'The notion that my kids are going to school with teachers that are armed with a weapon is not something that, quite frankly, I'm comfortable with.'

President Trump was captured bowing his head during Wednesday's White House listening session with families and victims of school shootings. He offered his grief and condolences to the victims and their families multiple times throughout the sit-down
The Town Hall meeting came just hours after President Trump held a meeting at the White House with some of the victims and families of the Parkland shooting.
He told the survivors of the shooting and their parents that he grieved for them during the listening session at the White House, in which many of the guests implored the president to take immediate action on gun violence.
The meeting came as thousands of high schoolers held walkouts and protests around the country to bring attention to gun control.
Parkland parent Andrew Pollack, who is an avid Trump supporter, told the president he was 'pissed' as he described his daughter Meadow's horrific death to the president and other families present - she was shot nine times.
'I'm very angry that this happened, because it keeps happening,' the bereaved father said, declaring that 9/11 'happened once, and they fixed everything. How many schools, how many children have to get shot?'
Pollack told Trump: 'It stops here with this administration and me. I'm not going to sleep until it's fixed. And Mr. President, we're going to fix it. Because I'm going to fix it. I'm not going to rest.
'Fix it! It should have been one school shooting and we should have fixed it! And I'm pissed! Because my daughter I'm not going to see again. She's not here. She's not here. She's at, in North Lauderdale, in King David Cemetery. That's where I go to see my kid now.'
After listening to parents like Pollack for some time, Trump said he'd be looking at making concealed carry permits available to teachers, which he admitted after asking for a show of support is certainly 'controversial.'

Andrew Pollack (center),  who is an avid Trump supporter, described how his daughter Meadow Pollack was shot nine at last week's deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He was joined by his sons at Wednesday's White House event
Trump also endorsed stricter background checks and pledged his administration to considering age limits for the purchase of semi-automatic rifles like the one the Parkland shooter used and new measures to treat mentally ill individuals.
'We're going to pick out the strongest ideas, the most important ideas, the ideas that are going to work and we're going to get them done,' the president said. 'It's not going to be talk, like it's been in the past. It's going on too long. Too many instances. And we're going to get it done.'
Parkland parent Carey Gruber pleaded with Trump to abandon partisan politics and take up reforms that will prevent shootings like the one that could have killed his son Justin.
'It's not left and right, it's a human issue, and we have to stop this,' Gruber told the Republican president.
President Trump was holding his first of two listening sessions at the White House this week on the topic of school safety.

The discussion with parents and teachers connected to the Parkland, Florida, shooting included more than a dozen student survivors who also urged Trump to take action.
Parents and students affected by the Sandy Hook and Columbine shootings were in the room, as well, alongside local teachers and students who put a spotlight on D.C.'s local crime problem.
The president spoke briefly at the top, and sympathetically asked questions several times in the middle of the meeting that aired live on national television.
Trump promised midway through attendees' passionate accounts that 'two minutes after this meeting' he would begin working on the issue of gun violence in schools and we will 'solve it together.'
'And we don't want others to go through the kind of pain that you've gone through,' he told them.
The president broached the topic of armed guards in school, adding, 'I think a lot of people are going to be opposed to it. A lot of people are going to like it. But the good thing is that you'll have a lot of people with that.'
Students marched outside of the White House all day on Wednesday as Trump prepared to hold the listening session. Also in attendance was Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Yes.  And that father who had lost his daughter in the shooting and spoke directly to Marco Rubio at this CNN event was on Morning Joe news show this morning.  He was remarkable.  His words were so eloquent and incredibly heartfelt.  He spoke for about 15 minutes.  He had me in tears including those on the news set.

If you all have the time here is the interview (referenced in my post above) with Fred Guttenberg, a father who lost his daughter in the Parkland mass shooting.  It’s almost 20 minutes.  Towards the end of the interview he talks about how his wife is handling the situation, which is very touching.

NRA chief Wayne LaPierre blames 'family, school security and the FBI' for Florida massacre - then ramps up calls for armed guards saying we need to 'harden' our schools

 • One of the first speakers at the Conservative Political Action Conference Thursday was the National Rifle Association's Wayne LaPierre

 • LaPierre was expected to appear at CPAC, though his speech was left off the public schedule for fear that he would attract protesters

 • The NRA head, who was compensated $5.1 million for the position in 2015, called for armed guards at schools

 • He blasted Democrats and the mainstream media, suggesting the groups were politicizing the massacre to take guns away

 • His warm-up act was NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch, who appeared Wednesday night at a CNN town hall with Florida shooting victims

Amid a new national debate over gun rights, the leader of America's largest pro-Second Amendment group made an unscheduled speech Thursday at a giant convention of grassroots conservatives, arguing that the level of armed security applied to celebrities and banks should extend to schools.
The National Rifle Association's Wayne LaPierre opened up the Conservative Political Action Conference Thursday blaming 'school security, the failure of family, the failure of America's mental health system, and even the unbelievable failure of the FBI, ' for last week's school shooting in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 dead.
'It's a bizarre fact that in this country our jewelry stores, all over this country, are more important than our children,' he fumed from onstage. 'Our banks, our airports, our NBA games, our NFL games, our office buildings, our movie stars, our politicians, they're all more protected than our children at school.'

Wayne LaPierre's speech came a day after President Trump invited victims of school shootings into the White House for a conversation. While suggesting he was open to some gun control measures, the president tweeted his support for the NRA Thursday morning

The most recent school shooting has invigorated student activists who want lawmakers to pass stricter gun laws. The National Rifle Association has stood in opposition to most of these measures
'Does that make any sense to anybody?' he asked the crowd. 'Do we really love our money and our celebrities more than we love our children?'

While an appearance by LaPierre was expected during the three-day conference, held just outside of Washington, D.C., at Maryland's National Harbor, he was left off the schedule in light of the recent school shooting, with organizers worried that his speech would attract protesters.
But it was clear when NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch was introduced as the first big-name speaker, that LaPierre would soon follow.
'We were all horrified by another terrible tragedy at an American school,' LaPierre began. 'Each and every member of the National Rifle Association mourns the loss of the innocent.'
He then delivered a 30-plus minute diatribe against the Democrats and the media to the crowd.
'The opportunists wasted not one second to exploit tragedy for political gain,' he said, suggesting the 'breathless national media' was eager to 'smear' the NRA.
Democrats, LaPierre warned, 'hate the NRA. They hate the Second Amendment. They hate individual freedom.'
'For them it's not a safety issue, it's a political issue,' he continued. 'Their goal is to eliminate the Second Amendment and our firearms freedoms, so they can eradicate all individual freedoms.'
'Their solution is to make you, all of you, less free,' LaPierre said.
The NRA CEO spent a big chunk of his speech warning off socialism, suggesting that the modern-day Democratic Party was completely now in the Bernie Sanders' mold.
LaPierre said it's 'terrifying' that 'new European-style socialists' have taken over the Democratic Party.
'Obama promised a fundamental transformation of our country, and you know what, it began with his own national party,' the NRA leaders aid. 'A party that is now infested with saboteurs, who don't believe in capitalism, don't believe in the Constitution, don't believe in our freedom and don't believe in America as we know it.'

'Obama may be gone, but they're Utopian dream, it marches on,' LaPierre added.
It goes beyond Sanders, the Vermont independent who ran for president in 2016, losing to Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary.
'He's near the end of his career,' LaPierre said of the 76-year-old Sanders. 'But how about Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Bill de Blasio, Andrew Cuomo, Cory Booker, Christopher Murphy and Keith Ellison?'
The CPAC audience booed.
'They are not Democrats in the mold of John F. Kennedy or Tip O'Neill,' LaPierre said. 'They hide behind labels like Democrat, left-wing and progressive to make their socialist agenda more palatable and that is terrifying.'
Following in the footsteps of Congressional Republicans, who have become more and more critical of the FBI, LaPierre blamed them too, while pointing out that many members of the NRA are in law enforcement.
That didn't stop LaPierre – and Loesch – from saying the bureau dropped the ball.
'I refuse to leave this stage until I say one more time that we must immediately harden our schools,' La Pierre. 'Every day young children are being dropped off at schools that are virtual wide-open soft targets for anyone bent on mass-murder.'
He also refused to leave the stage until he had uttered his trademark line: 'To stop a bad guy with a gun, it takes a good guy with a gun.'
Before LaPierre spoke, Loesch brought fire to the stage – blasting the national media and agreeing that schools should be protected by deadly firepower.
'We're parents too,' she said of NRA members.

The NRA's Dana Loesch said Thursday that 'many in legacy media love mass shootings. You guys love it!' Loesch suggested that 'crying white mothers' were 'ratings gold'
'Don't you think our kids deserve the same protection as our celebrities? Don't you all think that our kids deserve the same protection as our athletes? As our banks? As our businesses?'
'But yet we leave them the most unprotected,' Loesch lamented.
She opened her remarks by pointing to the back of a cavernous ballroom at reporters and television cameras – and claiming broadcasters crave the ratings that come along with massacres.
'Many in legacy media love mass shootings. You guys love it!' she said.
'Now I'm not saying that you love the tragedy, but I am saying that you love the ratings. Crying white mothers are ratings gold to you and many of the legacy media in the back.'
In her next breath, Loesch lambasted them for ignoring the plague of routine shootings in black-majority urban neighborhoods.
'There are thousands of grieving black mothers in Chicago every weekend, and you don't see CNN town halls for them, do you?' she asked on Thursday.
Last Wednesday's shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School invigorated its students to become vocal in the Second Amendment debate, as busloads of teenagers have invaded the state's capitol in Tallahassee with plans to march on Washington next month.

A number of students who survived the shooting, and parents of the deceased, gathered at the White House yesterday for a listening session with President Donald Trump.
Trump, most notably, pitched the ideas of arming teachers in the schools, an idea that was panned by a majority of his guests in the room.
He also said he would push for more comprehensive background checks, consider raising the age to buy firearms to 21,  and ban bump stocks, the devices that turned the Las Vegas gunman's semi-automatic into a machine gun, increasing his killing power.
But the president also expressed his support for the NRA, who endorsed him in May 2016, as he was earning the Republican nomination.
'What many people don’t understand, or don’t want to understand, is that Wayne, Chris and the folks who work so hard at the @NRA are Great People and Great American Patriots,' Trump tweeted Thursday morning, before LaPierre's speech.
'They love our Country and will do the right thing. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!' the president wrote.
Later Thursday, after LaPierre spoke, Trump too talked of toughening school security.
'We have to harden our schools not soften them up,' the president said, parroting the NRA head. 'We have to get smart on gun-free zones,' he added, repeating one of his own campaign trail talking points.
Trump also said the NRA was ready to make moves on guns.
'I'm a believer, but I spoke to them, and they're ready to do things they want to do things,' the president said.

Donna,
Thank you very much for the link!
I just watched it and am so moved by his strength, just heartbreaking! When he talked about this shooting having happened on Valentine's Day, his wife's favorite holiday... Also when he said that his son came to them the night after the shooting, having realized that he's an only-child now Sad

But even more when he spoke at the town-hall meeting the night before and accused Trump to have instrumentalized this massacre to accuse the FBI for having wasted time and energy on investigatiin vs himself which was truly disgusting.

President Donald Trump on Thursday doubled down on his calls to arm teachers in an effort to prevent school shootings, adding that firearm-savvy staff could be given “a little bit of a bonus” for carrying weapons on campus.
“I want certain highly adept people, people who understand weaponry, guns” to have a permit to carry concealed firearms in schools, Trump said during a White House meeting with law enforcement officials in the wake of the shooting that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. He added that he would allocate federal funding to training said educators.
“I want my schools protected just like I want my banks protected,” the president said.
Trump first floated the armed-teachers idea — which is backed by the National Rifle Association — on Wednesday during an emotional listening session with survivors and parents of the Florida shooting as well as other students, teacher and families affected by gun violence in schools.
Trump has also voiced support for raising the minimum age for buying certain guns from 18 to 21, and enhanced background checks for people purchasing firearms — but said Thursday that he disapproved of schools holding active shooter drills to prepare students and staff for the worst.
“Active shooter drills is a very negative thing,” Trump said after Pam Stewart, the Florida Department of Education commissioner, brought up the drills. “I don’t like it. I’d much rather have a hardened school.”
Trump added that active shooter drills were “crazy,” and “very hard on children.”
Trump also tweeted this morning that he wants to give “concealed guns to gun adept teachers with military or special training experience,” which he estimated is 20 percent of teachers.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas' armed police officer RESIGNS as it emerges he HID during massacre and never went in to the school

 • Marjory Stoneman Douglas's resource officer Scot Peterson 'never went in' during the massacre

 • Instead of confronting the gunman he stayed outside the school at his station

 • An officer claims Peterson, 54, hid behind a cement column during the shooting

 • Sheriff Scott Israel said he should've 'went in, addressed the killer, and killed'

 • Peterson received award in 2014 for 'tact and judgment' from City of Parkland

The armed security guard stationed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School did nothing to stop the attack, instead hiding from gunman Nikolas Cruz when he opened fire, killing 17 on February 14.
Scot Peterson, the school's resource officer, did not confront the gunman and instead stood positioned outside the school during the massacre, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Thursday.
The 54-year-old 'never went in,' Israel explained, citing security footage, and adding that he was armed and in uniform when bullets started to rain.
And in an interview with the New York Times, Coral Springs Officer Burton revealed Peterson hid from Cruz when the teenager started shooting.

Burton said Peterson 'was seeking cover behind a concrete column leading to a stairwell,' because he was worried Cruz could be lurking in the lot. He said Peterson couldn't hear gunshots or screams to lead him to the precise location of the shooting.
Israel said Peterson was suspended without pay as police conduct an internal investigation, NBC Los Angeles reported. But instead of waiting it out, Peterson chose that moment to resign and retire from his position.

And in an interview with the New York Times , Coral Springs Officer Burton revealed Peterson hid from Cruz when the teenager started shooting. Pictured are students being treated after the shooting on Valentine's Day

'After seeing video and witness statements, and Peterson's own statement, I decided this morning... to suspend Scot Peterson without pay pending an internal investigation,' Israel said.
Israel said that instead of just standing there, Peterson should have 'went in, addressed the killer and killed.'
Peterson never discharged his gun during the shooting.
When the attack ended Cruz managed to ditch his semiautomatic AR-15 and slip away on foot. Within about seven minutes from when the gunfire began he was out of the school and in a nearby neighborhood where he was ultimately stopped by an officer from a neighboring police department.
The first officers to enter the school did so roughly 10 minutes after gunfire started, but at that point Cruz had already escaped.
It took about 30 minutes after the gunfire started for police to track Cruz down. After that it took an additional 15 minutes for police to identify him.  Many students were still cowering behind locked doors for 45 minutes after the attack started, unsure if the person banging on their classroom doors was the shooter or the police.
Peterson started working as a resource officer Stoneman Douglas in 2009, according to the Sun-Sentinel. He was responsible for investigating crimes related to stolen property, assault and narcotics offenses.
He had been working for the sheriff's officer in 1985 and in 2016 made $75,673.72 annually, sheriff's office records show.
In 2014 Peterson was presented with the title of School Resource Officer of the Year for the City of Parkland District by the Broward County Crime Commission because he proved 'to be reliable in handling issues with tact and judgment.'
The press release for the award also says Peterson was active in 'mentoring and counseling' the students at Stoneman Douglas.
In 2013 Peterson was also named Broward County Sheriff Parkland employee of the year.

During Thursday's conference Israel also addressed prior calls officers in Broward had received related to the gunman, many of which pointed to his instability and likelihood to carry out the crime he did.
Since 2008, the agency received 23 calls about Cruz and his brother Zachary.
He said two officers who previously responded to one of those calls have been placed on restrictive duty.
'In two of the cases, after being briefed by internal affairs I've restricted two of our deputies to take statements and make a decision to see whether they should have and could have,' done something to prevent the Parkland tragedy, Israel explained.
'Our main goal at this point, absent of helping these families heal and keeping our schools safe, is making sure this killer receives and justice he deserves,' Israel said prior to today's press conference.
Israel also announced Wednesday that he has directed a new policy that will see Broward County deputies armed with rifles and stationed at schools. He said he does not support arming teachers.
Cruz has been charged with 17 counts of murder after Thursday's shooting.
He had previously been reported to police and FBI agents on multiple occasions due to his disturbing behavior at school and on social media, and particularly regarding his affliction with weapons.

Trump campaign boss Paul Manafort and deputy Rick Gates are charged by Mueller with $75 MILLION money laundering, tax dodging and mortgage fraud scheme

 • Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators filed a new indictment Thursday against Rick Gates and Paul Manafort

 • Pair are charged with concealing $30 million from the government and using offshore accounts used to mask funds

 • Acted as unregistered foreign agents representing Ukraine's Victor Yanukovych then put cash from that and other activities in offshore accounts, says Mueller

 • They did not declare existence of foreign accounts to Treasury or IRS and wired from them to U.S. to pay for home improvements and antiques, say charges

 • Then went on alleged mortgage fraud spree to get supply of ready money after Yanukovych was deposed and had help from co-conspirator in one bank

 • The avalanche of charges could be used to try to secure guilty pleas and come after Alex Van der Zwaan pleaded guilty Tuesday afternoon to lying to the FBI

 • Van der Zwaan lied when he said his last communication with Rick Gates, ex-Trump campaign chair Manafort's deputy, was in August 2016

Special counsel Robert Mueller delivered another bombshell Thursday, charging Donald Trump's former campaign chair Paul Manafort and deputy Rick Gates with running an elaborate scheme to launder $75 million and dodge tens of millions in taxes.
Mueller filed a new superseding indictment Thursday against top former Trump campaign aides Manafort and Gates – accusing them of laundering $30 million out of a total of $75 million they had been paid, to avoid taxes.
The underlying charge is that the man who helped steer President Trump to the White House took extraordinary efforts to avoid paying his own taxes and turned in false tax returns to the IRS.
The new indictment lays out an elaborate scheme where the pair did business abroad for some unsavory clients - including the pro-Russian former Ukrainian regime - set up dozens of LLCs with offshore bank accounts in overseas tax havens, then wired money from them direct to companies they wanted to pay in the United States for their own lavish lifestyles.

Dramatic move: Robert Mueller's bombshell indictment alleges that the man running Trump's presidential campaign at the time of the Republican nomination was a tax cheat
They lied to the Treasury and IRS that they did not hold foreign bank accounts, and even lied to the people who prepared their taxes, the charges allege.

The pair also masked what was in fact income as loans to avoid paying taxes on it.
When the pro-Russian regime of Victor Yanukovych was deposed in Ukraine, the pair hit money troubles, so turned to mortgage fraud in the U.S., getting loans with the aid of bogus financial documents to ensure a supply of liquid cash.
The new charges hit the pair with conspiracy, fraud, and tax charges - with a total of 32 counts.
The new charges add to the initial 12-count indictment filed in October, and follows reports of lengthy talks with Gates over a possible plea deal.
The slapping of new charges on him appears to signal that talks have broken down – and brings down even more pressure for Gates to submit.
According to the government, more than $75 million flowed through offshore accounts set up by the pair.
Manafort, 'with the assistance of GATES, laundered more than $30,000,000, income that he concealed from the United States Department of the Treasury (Treasury), the Department of Justice, and others,' according to the charges.
The indictment continues: 'GATES obtained more than $3,000,000 from the offshore accounts, income that he too concealed from the Treasury, the Department of Justice, and others.'
Among other revelations from the stunning 32-count indictment:

 •  The pair fraudulently secured $20 million in loans by inflating their balance sheet;

 • Manafort 'spent millions of dollars on luxury goods and services for himself and his extended family'

 • They relied on offshore accounts in Cyprus, the Grenadines, and other tax havens;
 • Manafort and Gates had a total of 33 US companies which had access to offshore accounts

 •  They 'disguised, as purported 'loans' more than $10 million transferred from entities in Cyprus that were in fact income.

Disgraced: Attorney Alex Van Der Zwaan is expected to plead guilty on Tuesday to lying to Robert Mueller's investigators

Anti-U.S. 'information warfare' alleged in indictment of Russians

They are also charged with covering up the scheme. Gates is accused of lying to the IRS even after he had been charged by Mueller with money-laundering.
According to the indictment, 'As recently as October 2017, in preparation for his amended 2013 tax filing, GATES was asked by his tax preparer: 'Did you have any foreign assets/bank accounts during 2013 or 2014?'
His response: 'No.'
Authorities combed through Manafort's tax returns, concluding that from 2008 to 2014, he 'represented falsely that he did not have authority over any foreign bank accounts.'
They also dug through Manafort's array of real estate deals and loans using his homes in New York and Virginia as collateral.
He 'falsely represented the amount of debt he had by failing to disclose on his loan application the existence of' another mortgage on his Union Street [a $3 million townhouse in Brooklyn] home, for example.
The charging document also revealed that the two are alleged to have a 'co-conspirator' working for a bank - one who was involved in the mortgage fraud.
The charges allege: 'When the document [a loan application] was first submitted to Lender B, a conspirator working at Lender B replied: "Looks Dr'd. Can't someone just do a clean excel doc and pdf to me??" A subsequent version was submitted to the bank.'
The array of charges follow a report in the DailyBeast that Gates has fired his lawyer, Tom Green of Sidley & Austin. Green is known as a deal-maker who has negotiated complex plea agreements.
Instead, Gates is now being represented by Barry Pollack of Miller Chevalier, now must contend with the litanny of tax and fraud charges against his client.
The latest court action comes just two days after a Russian oligarch's son-in-law admitted lying to the FBI.
Alex van der Zwaan pleaded guilty at federal court in Washington D.C. in a plea deal with the special counsel.
The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday that Gates will himself plead guilty to fraud charges and will agree to testify against his longtime partner, Manafort.
But Thursday's bombshell raises questions over whether that will now happen.
Court documents also disclose that Manafort and Gates are charged at federal court in northern Virginia, meaning Mueller has not one but two active grand juries.
There remains uncertainty over what is happening in the initial criminal case against Gates as the Daily Beast reported Thursday that he had fired the attorney who was seen as likely to make a deal with Mueller.

MANAFORT'S PROPERTY EMPIRE
NEAR TO THE SEAT OF POWER: BOUGHT FOR $2.75 MILLION

Manafort, who was educated in Washington D.C., has been a long-time resident on the other side of the Potomac, having previously lived in Mount Vernon.
He now owns a large condo in Alexandria, overlooking the river.
In January 2015 he and his wife bought the three-bedroom, 2.5 bathroom unit in this large condo block for $2.75million, through 601 NF Associates LLC.
The 2,779 square foot property is now estimated to be worth $2.9 million.

As well as a place in the Trump Tower on 5th Avenue, the Manaforts own the entire floor of a SoHo building.
Public records show they bought it through one of Manafort's LLCs, MC Soho Holdings, for $2.85 million in February 2012, with a mortgage for $1.5 million.
The two-bed, two bath property enjoys a huge living area, and sunny views in an area known for its designer clothes outlets and celebrity-friendly restaurants.
In March 2016, the couple became the formal owners of the property in their own name.
They have two mortgages outstanding on it now, both loans from Citizens Bank, totaling $2.042 million.
The court papers filed Monday show that he was renting it out on AirBnB and alleged that he told his son-in-law to mislead a mortgage appraiser that it was his second home.

The Manaforts appear to be as much property investors as owners.
In 2012 one of his LLCs, MC Brooklyn Holdings LLC, paid $2.995 million for this four-story unit on Union Street in Carroll Gardens, one of Brookyln's most prestigious areas. His investment was revealed by local blog, Pardon Me For Asking
There are permits to turn it into a single-family house and work has been under way for some time although city authorities ordered work to be stopped in January this year, apparently because the applicant for permission to work had 'withdrawn'.
This is likely to be linked to the change of ownership that month from Manafort's LLC to him and his wife.
The property now has $6.8 million of mortgages taken out on it, made up of three separate loans all in the couple's names.
Manafort told the New York Post that he plans to finish renovations by the end of the year, after neighbors complained about the state of the 22-foot wide brownstone.
LONGTIME HAMPTONS RETREAT: UNKNOWN MILLIONS

The Manaforts have owned this large detached property in Bridgehampton, on Long Island, since at least 1984.
It is an estimated 5,600 square feet, set far back from a quiet country road.
It puts the couple in walking distance of the beach and allows them access to the Hamptons social scene - although it is unclear how much the couple participate; the Hamptons can offer a very discreet summer retreat to those who do not wish to be widely seen.
An estimate for its value was not immediately  available but a nearby 9,000 square ft property on a similar amount of land sold in 2014 for $11 million, suggesting that a price tag of $5m to $6m could be realistic as a starting point - but the huge investment in the home detailed in the Mueller indictment would have to be taken into account too.

Manafort bought his upper-floor apartment in Trump Tower in November 2006, using an LLC he controlled called John Hannah LLC.
Public records show a purchase price of $3.675 million. The condo is thought to be around 1,500 square feet, and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms is unclear.
Its estimated current value would be likely to be significantly higher.
It was only in January 2015 that the property was transferred from the LLC to direct ownership by the Manaforts.
But in April that year, the Manaforts took out a $3 million mortgage on the property with UBS.

Manafort and his daughter Andrea bought a three-bedroom, three-bathroom condo apartment in a desirable part of Manhattan's Chinatown in 2007 for $2.54 million.
Public records suggest that it was jointly purchased by Andrea, now 31, and Jesand Investment Corporation LLC, which is controlled  by her father.
The 2,100 square foot home has three outdoor terraces, a built-in wine cooler, and is in a doorman building with its own gym and parking.
Andrea is no longer thought to live in New York but public records do not suggest the Manaforts have yet sold the property.
It was listed for sale in 2013 for $4.85 million and put on the market again for $2.6 million in 2014 but no sale appears to have resulted.
She married her husband Christopher Shand, an HR manager for a restaurant chain, in their native Washington D.C.'s St Regis hotel in May 2015.
FLORIDA HOME HANDY FOR MAR-A-LAGO: BOUGHT FOR $1.5 M
The Manaforts enjoy a waterside 4,000 square foot property in Palm Beach Gardens for a sunshine getaway.
They purchased it in September 2007 for $1.5 million and it is thought to have four bedrooms and four bathrooms.
The address is the one which appears to be most commonly used on company registrations for the Manaforts' network of LLCs, suggesting it may be their most common place of residence.
It is in easy reach of Mar-a-Lago, the president's 'Winter White House', which is around 20 minutes drive away.

The complexities of Manafort's property deals involve his son-in-law Jeffrey Yohai, 35.
Public records show that Manafort loaned $2.71million to help yet another LLC buy a Bel-Air property with a 3,746 square feet two-story home set on 1.26 acres of land. It has views over the ocean, making it a prestigious property in one of Los Angeles' most desirable areas.
The  five bed, five bath house appears to have been bought by the LLC, which is one of house developer Yohai's vehicles, for $8.5 million, public records suggest.
However Yohai went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy late in 2016, The Real Deal reported, and Manafort is now a creditor to his son-in-law, who had three other properties under development which are part of the bankruptcy petition.
DailyMail.com is not adding his $2.7 interest to the estimate value of his property portfolio.
Separately Yohai was involved in a legal case alleging that he was running a Ponzi scheme in New York.

So an armed security guard who was actually IN the school when the shooting started hid instead of helping? But teachers are supposed to wear guns and are expected to shoot?
Maybe that makes sense. Since teachers who feel a responsibility for their kids WILL do everything to help them - which makes them an excellent target.  So every assassin will shoot the adults in the room first...

Samantha Fuentes was shot both legs during the assault on Valentines day, after gunman Nikolas Cruz opened fire on his former classmates and teachers.
The 18-year-old has been dismissed from the hospital but was left with a piece of shrapnel behind her right eye.

Fuentes told the New York Times just after being discharged that she felt no reassurance when Trump called her at her hospital room last week.
'He said he heard that I was a big fan of his, and then he said "I'm a big fan of yours too." I'm pretty sure he made that up' Fuentes said after being discharged from the hospital.

She also said Trump referred to Cruz as 'a sick puppy' and 'said "oh boy, oh boy, oh boy," like, seven times.'
Trump was also widely criticized as being disingenuous when a photo emerged that revealed he was holding a card with talking points - one of which read: 'I hear you.'
The card seemed to suggest Trump needed to be reminded to offer his condolences to the people impacted by the 17 lost lives at the Florida high school.
Other questions that were also visible on the card included: 'What would you most want me to know about your experience?' and 'What can we do to help you feel safe?'
Colleagues said the notes were written by communications director and longtime aide Hope Hicks - who, along with press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, briefed the president before the session.
They knew he could potentially be going to a volatile and emotional situation - but decided to allow news stations to broadcast the meeting anyway.

And a participant at the president's round-table meeting at the White House on Wednesday, 18-year-0ld Samuel Zeif, agreed with Fuentes, and said that he was shocked to see the president's cue card.
'Everything I said was directly from the heart, and he had to write down "I hear you,"' he said, frustrated.
Zeif survived the massacre, and spoke at the meeting about his experience tearfully, calling for an all-out ban on assault weapons like the AR-15 Cruz used to take out his former classmates.
He told the Times that though he spoke from the heart, he felt Trump did little to comfort or console him.
'Half the time during that meeting, his arms were crossed,' he explained.
'I kept wanting to say "Mr President, uncross your arms." To me that is the international sign for close mindedness; it's really just a big 'no.'"

Pollack's 18-year-old daughter was killed in the massacre last week, and he said he brought a picture of her along with him to the visit. He, his wife, two sons and Meadow's longtime boyfriend met with Trump briefly before the group meeting.
'The guy really cared, you know? He flew us in, he had a bus waiting for us, he made time for us,' Pollack said.
'He took pictures of my daughter that we brought and he said he was going to look at it every day.'
Trump signed Pollack's white and gold 'MAGA' Hat, and then took he and his family members on a tour of the White House.
'He just said, "You guys are coming with me," and we were just talking about life as we walked,' Pollack explained.
'He's a regular guy. I wouldn't have been there if I didn't think he cared.'

The father a Trump supporter is very naive , he flew us out and had buses waiting for us . He really cared , he took a
picture they brought of his daughter and said he would look at it every day yeah right.

These people are so damn blind it is ridiculous.

We all know he did this because he had to not because cared so much.

'I would rather be the one that died protecting my friends than be the one that lived': Mom reveals how her FIFTH-GRADE son has volunteered to block the door when there's an active shooter

 • Teacher Tanai Benard had a talk with her son about school safety procedures

 • In a now-viral Facebook post, she shared that Dex, 10, told her he had volunteered to hold the door open in case of a shooter during a safety drill

 • When pressed, Dez said he feels he has lived a fuller life than his classmates

A selfless fifth-grader from Houston shocked his mom when he informed her that he volunteered to risk his life and block the door of his classroom in the event of an active shooter.
As a teacher, Tanai Benard thought it would be appropriate to make sure her son Dez, 10, was taking his school's safety drills seriously, given recent school shootings like the tragic Parkland massacre that killed 17 on Valentine's Day.
In a now-viral Facebook post, Tanai recounts how Dez told her his school held an active shooter drill, and shared what he had learned he should do in the emergency.

In a now-viral Facebook post , Tanai recounts her conversation with selfless Dez
'The teacher is suppose to shut and lock the door, put the black paper over the window on the door,' he said.

'Then myself and three other boys are suppose to push the table against the door.'
Tanai was immediately alarmed by her son's words, thinking the decision to have him protect his class may have something to do with the color of his skin.
'I internally went from 0 to 100 real quick. My child is one of only 2 black children in a class of 23. Being transparent, I immediately went to the "why is my black son being put on the front line?" (Just being real) So I asked before I verbally stated my thoughts,' the mom shared on Facebook.
But Dez told Tanai the reason he was picked to stand in front of everyone else if a shooter came to his school was because he himself volunteered to protect his friends.

The teacher said that while she's touched by her son's selflessness, she laments that he has to think about such decisions at such a young age (Tanai and her three children pictured)
'If it came down to it I would rather be the one that died protecting my friends then have an entire class die and I be the only one that lived,' said the boy.
While moved by her son's selflessness, Tanai then pondered on the fact her young son has already been forced to think of what he would do if his life was threatened at school.
Tanaiwrote: 'It took everything out of me not to breakdown. I still have a lump in my throat. 10 damn years old and this has to be our babies thought process in America.'
Her Facebook post struck a chord with people, and it has gathered more than 150,000 shares.
'What an amazing young man you have! It breaks my heart that our children have to think like this but your son is something special!' one comment read.

She said she was once again surprised when she asked Dez why he would sacrifice his life to save his friends when he hasn't lived a full life.
Dez replied: 'Because, I've traveled the world, played sports in different countries and gotten everything I've needed. I've done more.'

One of the young survivors of the Parkland shooting, which left 17 dead, has quit Facebook after claiming he received death threats from anti-gun control activists.
Cameron Kasky, 17, who created the hashtag #NeverAgain after the February 14 massacre at his school Marjory Douglas Stoneman High in Florida, wrote on Twitter: 'Temporarily got off Facebook because there's no character count so the death threats from the cultists are a bit more graphic than those on Twitter.'
The message has so far garnered more than 35,000 likes.
On the day of the shooting, Kasky addressed pro-gun advocates with a scathing Facebook post: 'I'm safe... Thank you to all the second amendment warriors who protected me.'

Two days after shooter Nikolas Cruz, 19, carried out the massacre, Kasky launched the #NeverAgain campaign, urging his supporters to make it go viral - which it did.

Kasky and others at the youthful vanguard of the anti-gun campaign plan to create a 'Badge of Shame' for politicians who continue to accept money from the National Rifle Association.
'At this point, any politician on either side who is taking money from the NRA is responsible for events like this,' Kasky told ABC's This Week.

'The NRA is fostering and promoting this gun culture in which people like Nikolas Cruz can gun down 17 innocent lives in our school.'
A representative for Facebook told Business Insider that it removes harassing content as soon as its moderators are aware of it.
'We want Facebook to be a safe and respectful environment. Bullying and harassment run counter to those goals, and have no place on Facebook or Messenger. We remove this content as soon as we're made aware of it,' a spokesperson said.

Perhaps Kasky's most high-profile moment came on Wednesday, when he confronted US Senator Marco Rubio of Florida at a CNN 'town hall' event broadcast on prime time.
Appearing relaxed and confident, the teen confronted the one-time presidential candidate, who has received funding from the NRA: 'Senator Rubio, can you tell me right now that you will not accept a single donation from the NRA in the future?'
The question sparked a debate between the high school junior and Rubio, who said he would not refuse future NRA donations because 'people buy into my agenda - and I do support the Second Amendment.
'I will always accept the help of anyone who agrees with my agenda.'
Among the other survivors who have since been harassed online are David Hogg.

Earlier this week, Kasky confronted the one-time presidential candidate Senator Marco Rubio of Florida - who has received funding from the NRA - at a CNN 'town hall' event broadcast on prime time
The 17-year-old aspiring journalist took refuge in a closet during the school massacre. Despite the terrifying circumstances, his instinct led him to film interviews with his fellow students while in hiding. The video went viral.
Hogg was recruited by Kasky to help lead the #NeverAgain movement.
But his experience in recent days lays bare the politicization of the issue. Hogg's father is a retired FBI agent and right-wing conspiracy theorists believe the agency is behind a shadowy campaign to bring down Trump.
The teen has been attacked and harassed online, and even accused of being a 'crisis actor' paid to travel to tragedies to propagate liberal viewpoints.
'I am not a crisis actor,' Hogg said. 'I'm someone who had to witness this and live through this and I continue to be having to do that. I'm not acting on anybody's behalf.'
Survivors of the shooting are planning a March For Our Lives event in Washington, DC, on March 24.

Following Trump's logic that these shootings are a result of mental illness that should have been nipped in the bud, doesn't it then make sense that any gun owner posting death threats online should, at the very least, have their guns taken away?

Kasky seems so mature for his age.  He really knows how to handle himself.  I’ve been so impressed with the students from Stoneman High.  After all that they have been through they have been exceptional in the way they have handled their grief and communicated with legislators and the press they have spoken to.

This issue of mental health in the gun debate needs to be totally re-evaluated.  I’m not even sure that current laws really support protecting the public from someone owning a gun who ‘may’ have a questionable mental status.  The background checks are not working or nonexistent? It’s complete hypocrisy for Trump to even talk about mental health being an important issue to him since his current proposed budget cuts mental health services.  His words are empty.  They usually are ...
