10 Reasons George Clooney Will Make a Great Dad

BY JEN JUNEAU@WORDSWITHJEN

POSTED ON JUNE 6, 2017 AT 12:17PM EDT

George Clooney is a first-time dad — of two! — but he’s well prepared.
On Tuesday, the actor-director, 56, welcomed twins with his wife Amal, 39, an international human-rights lawyer.

“This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine.  George is sedated and should recover in a few days,” his rep tells PEOPLE.
In February, a source told PEOPLE that the two-time Sexiest Man Alive was “excited but nervous.”
Here are just a few of the many the reasons Clooney is going to be one heck of a dad.

He’s super close with his own parents

Clooney comes from some pretty famous stock — perhaps most notably, he is related to the late singer Rosemary Clooney, who was his aunt. And his relationship with his parents, Nick and Nina, is so close he surprised them with a furry adopted friend in 2016.

In his 2006 Sexiest Man Alive cover interview, Clooney told PEOPLE that while his family is immensely talented (dad Nick was a longtime newscaster in Cincinnati), he values a deeper lesson from them the most.
“They also had that thing that I’ve always admired: the willingness to get beat up for the right reasons,” he explained. “I always liked that, and that’s one of those things you aim for in life. In my family we’ve all flopped pretty badly over the years at times, and that’s always okay. What wouldn’t be okay is to fail in integrity.”

He’s amazing with his friends’ kids

Clooney loves hosting his friends and their families at his home on Italy’s Lake Como. Among the lucky visitors:  Julia Roberts and her three children. “She stayed at my house in Italy when she was first pregnant,” Clooney said of his Ocean’s Eleven costar (and fellow twin parent) in 2016.
“She brought all those monsters (twins Phinnaeus and Hazel, 12, and son Henry Daniel, 10 this month) back to the house when they were actual human beings and we’ve had a blast with them,” he joked.

He pulls off the sweetest surprises

In March, the Oscar winner made a visit to the Sunrise Sonning Retirement and Assisted Living Facility in England to surprise resident Pat Adams for her 87th birthday.
“[Adams] loves George Clooney and mentions every day how she would love to meet him, especially as he lives so near to where I work,” a staffer at the facility wrote on its Facebook page, adding of the actor, “He bought a card and a lovely bunch of flowers.”

He’s a great cook

Clooney likely didn’t make his own birthday cake this year, but he has admitted that he’s pretty handy when it comes to pasta dishes.
“I don’t think she’s ever quite impressed with my cooking,” the Suburbicon star said of his wife in February, when asked how the couple celebrated their second wedding anniversary that previous September.
“If I slap something together — spaghetti and meatballs — she doesn’t know that it comes in a jar, so I can just fool her with that one,” he joked.

He’s a jokester

Speaking of silliness, the new dad knows how to take a joke and crack one. He recently posed with a gift from friend and business partner Rande Gerber and Gerber’s wife Cindy Crawford: “CASA” and “MIGOS” onesies. But since the twins weren’t around to wear them yet, he outfitted two Casamigos tequila bottles with them instead.
“My wife says I can’t name them Casa and Amigos. That’s the one thing I’m not allowed to do,” Clooney joked in March of his then-babies-on-the-way, prompting the funny present.

He’s an awesome pet owner (and animal lover)

On the set of Suburbicon in October, Clooney gave his own rescue pup Millie, then 5 years old, a hand (or rather, two arms) in getting up the stairs to her owner’s trailer. The actor and Amal adopted the adorable basset hound from California’s San Gabriel Valley Humane Society in 2015. Recently, the couple donated $10,000 to help Camp Cocker Rescue care for dogs it took in from a backyard breeder.

Millie is just one of the spouses’ pups that their new twins will get to play with. They are also “pet parents” to two cocker spaniels named Louie and Einstein — the latter of whom Clooney told Esquire in 2011 that he resorted to winning over in a pretty hilarious way.

“I run into the kitchen, where I have these turkey meatballs, and I rub them all over my shoes … Who knew Einstein was such a food lady of negotiable affection on top of everything? He throws himself at my feet,” the actor said. “Forever, now, he just thinks of me as the guy with the meatball feet. He loves me. I can do no wrong. He follows me everywhere.”

He sets a great example for giving back

A longtime Hollywood career, entrepreneurial ventures and a love for animals are only the beginning of the boxes Clooney can tick off of his pros list. The star is also a dedicated human-rights activist, having been involved with causes such fighting against mass genocide, advocating for a Darfur conflict resolution, helping Syrian refugees and supporting same-sex marriage.

“I’ve made the point that every time we’ve stood against equality, we’ve been on the wrong side of history,” he told The Advocate in 2012. “One day, the marriage-equality fight will look archaic.”

He’s crazy about his wife

The instances of Clooney paying tribute to Amal are countless, but fans of true love may never tire of hearing him rave about his highly accomplished wife.

“There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not proud to be your husband,” he addressed Amal at February’s César Awards in Paris,  where he received a career award.

“And I am excited about the years to come, and particularly the months to come,” Clooney added. “I love you very much.”

He loves his Kentucky hometown

Clooney keeps in touch with his roots.

In June 2015, he and Amal jetted off to Augusta, Kentucky, for a family reunion, enjoying dinner at Caprioni’s on the River in Maysville — where they sang “Happy Birthday” to a woman at the next table.
During the quick trip, the couple attended a private party (and signed autographs!) at the Augusta Pub, and stopped by Magee’s Bakery. Clooney even insisted on taking a photo with the latter shop’s owners.

He’s super into sports

Speaking of his Kentucky roots, the star — who was born in Lexington and later moved to Augusta with his family — has showed off his basketball skills multiple times on the courts of Augusta in recent years, playing pickup games at Augusta High School and elsewhere.
“It was fun, he’s still got it,” said one of the students who played with Clooney in 2015, adding of Amal, who stopped by to watch, that “it looked like she knew the game too.”

Although basketball isn’t the only sport Clooney has dabbled in (he tried out for the Cincinnati Reds in 1977!), even Barack Obama has shot hoops with the actor.
“We played here in L.A. I did a fundraiser here with him, and he said, ‘What are you doing tomorrow morning?’ ” Clooney recalled to Esquire in 2016. “I go, ‘What time?’ He goes, ‘5:30. You wanna play some hoops?’ And I go, ‘Yeah.’ And he goes, ‘All right, we’ll set it up. You got any of your friends want to play?’ “[/quote]
