‘Captain America’ In Control As ‘Money Monster’ Enjoys Bump And ‘The Darkness’ Finds Niche — Saturday B.O.

There were only two new offerings for moviegoers this weekend. The first was the Jodie Foster-directed Money Monster, starring George Clooney, Jack O’Connell and Julia Roberts, which enjoyed a 25% increase tonight to cash in with $6.1M. That puts raises the three-day estimate for this adult-demo drama to $14.6M-$14.9M for Sony.
There are two newcomers for moviegoers this weekend — the Jodie Foster-directed Money Monster starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts and the horror film The Darkness. Money Monster started off with $600K in previews last night and had a strong showing Friday morning but started to wane throughout the day (as did its Rotten Tomatoes score which was 64% fresh in the AM and fell to 57% last night).

Money Monster started off with $600K in previews last night and had a strong showing Friday morning but started to wane throughout the day (as did its Rotten Tomatoes score which was 64% fresh in the AM and fell to 57% last night). This was a project that Tom Rothman brought into the studio two years ago when he made the deal to finance and release the $30M picture as one of his big purchases for TriStar. The film was packaged independently and then sold; Smokehouse’s Clooney and Grant Heslov also produced.

Money Monster garnered a B+ CinemaScore which, on average, gives it a 3.2 multiple. Estimates show it opening to around $14M to $14.4M which could put the multiple around $46M, of which the studio takes roughly 50%. With a budget of around $30M plus marketing and distribution costs, all in it’s gotta be around $55M to $60M. So it’s gonna need a bigger boat (a better than average multiple). A film targeted to an older demographic usually takes its time to play out and with the coming weeks filled with family fare (The Angry Birds Movie), young comedy fare (Neighbors 2) and comic book tentpoles (X-Men: Apocalypse), it might hang in there as it has a good start. And it’s nice to see a film that is not yet again based on a comic book in the theatrical marketplace.

In exit polls, Clooney and Roberts were the big reasons that the older audience said they attended. The picture has the cover of EW which will expose the picture to a younger demo … and that demo who did attend – albeit a very small percentage — gave it an A CinemaScore. But, in this day and age, their attention spans are no better than gnats.

Money Monster also bows overseas this weekend in select markets (Italy, India, Hong Kong to name a few and is in previews in France) and debuts after a warm welcome at Cannes where the movie screened to a standing ovation for Foster, Clooney and Roberts. Foster had not been at Cannes since she was 12 years old and it was Roberts first time there. The picture needs that overseas box office gross.

The film, produced by husband/wife team Daniel Dubiecki and Lara Alameddine, took seven years to bring to the screen they told Deadline during Cannes.

For what it’s worth, it’s Foster’s best opening as a director and Roberts best opening targeted for the adult audience since Eat, Pray Love (all of a sudden, it seems almost better not to point that out). The established reviewers like A.O. Scott, Peter Travers and Time magazine gave the film good reviews. Given that the stars themselves are non-social, Sony certainly did a good job making sure awareness was high.

Saturday AM Update: Friday estimates are in and Captain America: Civil War led the charge with an estimated $19.4 million suggesting the film is looking at something around a $73 million second weekend.
Coming in second on Friday, but likely to finish third for the weekend, is Sony's Money Monster, which scored an estimated $5 million on Friday along with a "B+" CinemaScore. The studio is projecting a $14.5-15 million weekend.

Weekend Estimates: ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Eyes Healthy $72M Sophomore Frame; ‘Money Monster’ ($14.5M) Beats Expectations; 
Debuting in second place, and somewhat ahead of expectations, was Sony’s Money Monster. The thriller bowed to $5 million yesterday, giving director Jodie Foster the best first day of her directorial career. The star power of George Clooney and Julia Roberts is driving the film as a counter-programmer aimed toward adults early in the summer. Rotten Tomatoes and Flixster scores are modest at 57 percent and 60 percent, respectively, but there are some early indications that the film is playing relatively well with general audiences.  Boxoffice is projecting a solid $14.5 million opening weekend.

Sony’s opening of “Money Monster” was performing much better than recent estimates, which had pegged it at as low as $10 million at 3,104 sites. The film, directed by Jodie Foster, banked $5 million on Friday as a counter-programming play in the wake of the film’s out-of-competition world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution, pointed to the B+ Cinemascore as an indication that the $27 million thriller should see significant business in coming weeks. “It’s a smart adult film made for a very reasonable price,” he added.

The weekend's high-profile new offering was Jodie Foster's adult-skewing financial thriller Money Monster, which came in ahead of expectations, earning $15 million from 3,104 theaters for Sony/TriStar. The film, reuniting George Clooney and Julia Roberts for the first time since 2004's Ocean's Twelve, fared better than a number of recent studio adult dramas with big stars, and opened on par with Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies.
Money Monster's profile was no doubt boosted by its splashy premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 12.

"In the world of Netflix and other options, adult dramas and adult thrillers are worth fighting for," said Sony worldwide marketing and distribution chief Josh Greenstein. "This is an important win as these movies are becoming an endangered species in the theatrical marketplace."

“The Angry Birds Movie” Flying To Weekend Box Office Win

The Angry Birds Movie is flying to the top of the box office for a win in its opening weekend.
Angry Birds, of course, is based on the popular video game of the same name. With the voices of Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad, among many other stars, the animated kids movie is soaring to a $39.4 million debut. And with that, the two-week chart-topping reign of Captain America: Civil War is coming to an end.
The Marvel movie will have to settle for second place this time around, with a projected $32 million. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, which sees Chloe Grace Moretz joining Zac Efron and Seth Rogen, is looking at $22.8 million for a third place debut. Finishing in fourth will likely be The Jungle Book with $11.3.
$11 million in ticket sales would put Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe’s The Nice Guys in the number five spot for its first weekend. A box office haul of $6.9 million has Money Monster eyeing sixth. And horror film The Darkness may nab seventh if it brings in $2.1 million.
Probably rounding out the Top 10 are Zootopia ($1.7 million), The Huntsman: Winter’s War ($1.2 million), and Mother’s Day ($1.1 million). All figures are currently estimates. Gossip Cop will have updates.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” Wins Memorial Day Weekend Box Office

The stars of X-Men: Apocalypse are the new box office superheroes this Memorial Day weekend. The latest installment in the Marvel franchise, which once again stars Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy, was number one during the holiday weekend, earning $65 million from Friday through Sunday. That’s nowhere near as high as the recent debut of Captain America: Civil War, but a respectable amount nonetheless.
The same can’t be said for Johnny Depp’s Alice Through The Looking Glass, a sequel to Alice In Wonderland. The Disney movie came is a disappointing second place with $28.1 million in ticket sales. Meanwhile, last week’s chart-topper, The Angry Birds, landed in third with $18.7 million. Captain America: Civil War added $15.1 million to its still-growing haul to nab the number four spot. And box office receipts of $9.1 million put Zac Efron and Seth Rogen’s Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising in fifth.
Rounding out the Top 10 were The Jungle Book in sixth place with $7 million, while The Nice Guys, pairing Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, secured seventh with $6.4 million. Money Monster came in eighth with $4.3 million, and Love & Friendship took ninth, thanks to $2.5 million in ticket sales. Just making it into the Top 10 was Zootopia with only $831,000.

As of June 3, 2016 Money Monster has grossed $54,065,503 worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. The production budget was $27 mil.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” Sequel Winning Weekend Box Office

Cowabunga, dude! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows is fighting to a first-place finish at the box office this weekend.
In the sequel to the 2014 TMNT film, the turtles set off on a new adventure against The Shredder, joined once more by Megan Fox and Will Arnett. The first movie debuted to more than $65 million less than two years ago, but the follow-up is on track for about half that. Still, a $33.7 million haul will easily beat the competition.
That includes X-Men: Apocalypse, which is being pushed into the number two spot after only one week at the top of the chart. It’s expected to take in $22.5 million for its second weekend. Meanwhile, the tear-jerker Me Before You, starring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke, is currently over-performing for a projected $18.3 million to nab third.
Following in fourth may be Alice Through The Looking Glass, which is continuing to disappoint with a potential $11 million. Ticket sales of $9.2 million would put The Angry Birds Movie at number five. Captain America: Civil War is likely to land in sixth if it brings in $7.1 million.
And Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping, a new mockumentary from The Lonely Island, will probably open in seventh place with $4.6 million. Possibly rounding out the Top 10 are Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising ($4.6 million), The Jungle Book ($3.9 million) and The Nice Guys ($3.2 million).
