Re: October 2016 Chit Chat
fava - Hillary (and her advisors) are that smart and strategic. She knows that her support is weak among undecided voters and Republicans who can't see voting for Trump - and who might go back to the party if they ran another candidate. Chances are it would be Mike Pence, who is only slightly less horrible than Trump, but isn't mentally unbalanced and he could pull a lot of votes back to the Republican ticket.
I lay the responsibility for Trump firmly at the feet of the media. From day 1 they covered his disgusting behavior as if it was a comedy act and never really took him seriously enough to investigate him the way other candidates are investigated - until it was too late, and they realized they had created a monster who could very well win. (The Republicans bear their own share of guilt, too, but IMO if it hadn't been for the media giving Trump free airtime 24/7 he would never have been the nominee.
To our friends in the rest of the world who wonder WTF is going on in the US: Please don't tar us all with the same brush. Most men don't speak or behave like Trump (entitled, elitist, spoiled rotten, narcissistic frat boy whose parents have a lot to answer for). Though many in his fan base are white men, they are a certain kind of white men - angry, disillusioned, frustrated. How they think Trump's election could make their lives better is beyond me.
One last thing - the really important thing, actually: CONGRATULATIONS CAROLHATHAWAY FOR PULLING OFF WHAT SOUNDS LIKE THE GREATEST PARTY EVER!!!!!! ( I think you're really going to need that cruise! )

Re: October 2016 Chit Chat
I think part of Hillary's strategy by not engaging with Trump on the obvious is appealing to suburban women. Let Trump dig his own grave on the assault issue. I think most women aren't going to buy the "enabler" charge by Trump. She would get more sympathy as I see it if she took the high road. Which she did. She pretty much cooked his goose during the first debate.
I don't think Pence could win over Hillary. I don't think Trump's base, which is considerable, would accept him. As far as they are concerned Pence is just along for the ride.
But I do agree that among moderate Republicans he would get a surge of support.
The media refer to Trump's supporters as mostly white uneducated men (high school education). I don't like using uneducated to describe what I think is more likely ignorance. There are many people who have had no more than a high school education but can be just as smart and articulate about the issues.

Re: October 2016 Chit Chat
Thank you so much for your congrats, guys!
Today we cleaned the hall, paid the bill (well, it was about what we'd expected, a fair prize) and watched the pics and enjoyed it again. I'll turn 50 in three years and am not sure yet if I want to repeat it - although I'm sure I'll want it as time flies by...
And I also know my family - if we'd decide to go on a vacation for my birthday, they'd show up later. This year my cousin went camping with his friend, and his mother, siblings and some close friends showed up at the camping ground to congratulate him...
The only excuse would be a serious illness or a death of a family member, and I wouldn't want to opt for that alternative...

Considering how long the media considered Trump a joke, never seriously challenging him on his lies, his racism, his bigotry, his Islamophobia, his xenophobia, his misogyny, his underage rape civil trial, etc. etc. etc. -- the political comments would likely be more appropriate in the humor section under a new subtitle: Things I thought I'd never see or hear in my lifetime that I thought were a joke or must have been a dream, but then realized were truly a living nightmare."

Sevens - Chris Kluwe's right on target. I wish they would print up a million copies of his letter in billboard size and plaster it all over the country - especially all around any place Trump is likely to be.

Yeah, so having no pratical voting rights and having the Great Firewall in my country which means we save all this election circus yet add all the inconvenience of trying to build a VPN and get connected to so many banned Internet sites.
Calm down Americans, at least 1.4 billion Chinese people don't have to vote and couldn't even google anything and we're still doing fine. Democracy doesn't matter at all in the end. Maybe communism is the ultimate solution.

Democracy is messy. No doubt. The U.S. is a young country. We are a work in progress. No form of government is perfect. We complain a lot. But I feel really lucky to live in a democracy and I wouldn't trade it for any other form of government.
BTW in my prior post I meant to write "messenger" when referring to Trump. Sorry.

Re: October 2016 Chit Chat
Donnamaria that's true you're a young country yet has developed into the strongest nation on the earth, democracy is worth lots of credit. But I used to find the brainwashing statements on our political ideology textbooks very ridiculous such as "we should never doubt the Communist Party's leadership as the only force that represents the people(for not letting people search the Internet freely?)" or "the democracy in Western country is just a form of trades between government powers and financial groups, a circus organized by the two or three parties over the years", "socialism with Chinese characteristics has its innate advantages over capitalism" etc.
Now? After having seen countless failed democracy and even the greatest democracy could almost elect a president like Trump , I'm not so sure about our Party's statements...There's some truth in it after all.
PS: Nevermind, I'm just a computer&science&information student who never understands politics.

Re: October 2016 Chit Chat
Sevens,
about 25 % of the people in my country (Germany) grew up in communism because my country was devided for more than 40 years. I grew up jn the western part but had always contact to the east because of pen friends and friends who had relatives there. We also lived less than 20 miles away from the border, and my husband's relatives lived there as well, so I guess I'm able to understand a bit if it. Communism itself, pure communism, means - based on Marx and Engels - that everybody's equal and free, has the same rights and duties. So nobody's poorer or richer than the other ones, everybody gets the same education, no matter if his parents can pay for it etc.
The idea is very good IMO but lacks of our imperfection. There are always people who want to lead, and others wants to be told what to do. There will always be people who have a good sense for business, and if you think about what happened in Russia when the communism broke down - they were there, at once, and made billions. The same happened in other former communist countries, and if you think about how many of the world's richest people are Chinese (hi, Sevens), that prooves that you can't keep it away. So you either have to give them jobs where they can use their power and knowledge, or you put them into prison.
The GDR - to speak of my country - worked for some decades. At the beginning many tried to escape, so their leadership 'imprisoned' the whole country. If you tried to escape and succeeded, your family would be sanctionized. If you failed, you wrre imprisoned, and your family would be sanctionized as well. If you were nice, did everything the party wanted you to do, you were allowed to live a comfortable life. If your family participated in church work, had too many contacts to the west, you weren't. To make sure you agreed on their political view, you were watched. Because Germany is a small country in the middle of Europe, you couldn't seperate them completely: many if them had relatives in the west who were allowed to visit, in most parts of you were able to watch western TV. (They actually had a great way to find out if families watched western TV because we had similar shows for children in the west and the east. So small kids would be asked in kindergarden or at school, which melody was played during the show, which told them if they watched western or eastern TV.)
If the GDR hadn't broken down, I don't know what happened now, because it's not so easy to control the internet when your country is surrounded by countries with access to internet all over tge world...

Hasn't happened yet! I am more hopeful now that Trump will be trounced. But it is a danger even in a democracy and something that was of great concern to our founding fathers over 200 years ago. Hence the checks and balances.Sevens wrote:After having seen countless failed democracy and even the greatest democracy could almost elect a president like Trump , I'm not so sure about our Party's statements...There's some truth in it after all.

Right fava. Our democracy is solid. Our country has gone through populist movements in the past and recovered. The checks and balances do help right the ship ... so to speak.

All politics aside, have you seen this trailer for The Great Wall starring Matt Damon?

Lizzy, I once recommended Zhang Yimou's great works in our private chats, and it surprises me that Matt admits himself that he also admires Zhang a lot! This trailer looks so exciting! Hope it would surpass Hero's success...of course the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony and To Live will always be Mr. Zhang's ultimate masterpieces.

Actually the director has already explained that Matt and the white guys are just a bunch of arm traders coming here with disgraceful intentions and there're at least five or six main heroes in the film who are ancient Chinese, only two of them speak English.
