PAN,
this is just great! Fascinating! Amusing (if it wouldn't be too serious)! Frightening!

Annemarie,
I would suggest that everybody already knows about this if he'd just listen to what Trump says... so I don't have much hope...

Thank you PAN. What is so incredible is that I had actually forgotten about some of the lies and claims Trump has made since he started on his journey to "take over" our country. It's impossible to keep up with all of them.

What surprises me is that the so-called Trump surrogates that I've seen interviewed on news programmes never seem to be asked if they think Trump's behaviour is okay! They might be asked if it's presidential, but many of them just laugh it off!

PAN - Bill Maher is great! He's fairly left-of-center politically and is an equal-opportunity critic of anyone in public life who screws up. When someone pisses him off he makes no bones about letting them know it. A lot of people don't like him because of his politics, but he usually has his facts right and I think he's fun to watch.

Just wanted to add a HUGE "Thank you" to the UK for sending us John Oliver! Just caught up on  couple of his shows and he's brilliant!

Good, isn't he? Has a great satirical heritage, starting with the Cambridge University Footlights, where so many great names of satire start out.

Introduced to Jon Stewart by Ricky Gervais I believe, and a fine line in sarcasm, a Btitish trait I'm afraid.

Trevor Noah's doing well too. A South African with a pretty amazing background, he came to the UK comedy circuit.

I love this:

PAN- I saw that post yesterday in a Daily Kos e-mail. It would be funny if it weren't absolutely true!

Sadly, Jon Stewart retired to go live on a farm (at least for now) - although he did show up on Steven Colbert's show one time because of the election. I think he and John Oliver are the best! Do you get Ricky Gervais' show or Trevor Noah's? Is Bill Maher's program available in the UK? I think you'll find that, even though our senses of humor may be a bit different, sarcasm is a trait we share. With the kind of election we're going through it's hard not to be sarcastic!

I don't get HBO so I can't watch Bill Maher. But I have seen some of his shows. He does his homework and usually gets the narrative right and like you said Lizzy he is an equal opportunity critic of the left and the right.

Here's a small clip of an interview with George about South Sudan.

My husband will turn 50 on Saturday, and we're going to have a beach party withabout 60 friends and family members! I've got one room filled with decorations, and we told everybody to show up in casual summer clothes (not necessarily in bathing costumes, because it's really cold now. If it should be too cold, we'll have to drink a lot to warm up). We'll have a hall with a beach area, a cocktail bar and everything to make it look like on a beach...
I also made avplaylist with lots of summer hits, including everything the Beach Boys ever sang, and I really can't wait if it turns out to ve as good as I've planned it...

Carolhathaway - I'm guessing this woman lives in the keys (islands off the southern end of Miami) or along the east coast of Florida. That's where I heard Matthew could potentially hit, and since the only way to reach the keys is via causeways, people there can get stranded if a bad storm hits. They have a lot of experience with hurricanes and if people follow instructions they should be ok. My Mom lived down there for more than 30 years and survived quite a few hurricanes.

Lizzy,
I guess you're right about that. My collegue said something about 'they have to leave their island'. He's just worried about her because her husband is at a conference in Europe at the moment, and she's got a two year old son and will have her second baby in December. But I'm sure it's better for everybody to watch the hurricane from outside than being in the middle of it...

lol! You have no idea how right you are! I've been down there for two hurricanes and I can tell you, they're no fun! I hope your friend's daughter has a secure place to stay with her child - maybe a friend's home in Miami? There are shelters, but it's more reassuring to be with people you know when the wind starts blowing and the rain is pouring down. I hope she'll be alright. They seem to have storm-prep well in hand, so she should make it through ok.

I'm sure she'll be at a safe place.
At least there's a pre warning system, the possibility to protect your house and the chance to escape a hurricane and wait until it's over...

We don't have hurricanes in Middle Europe, but some years ago a tornado passed our village and destroyed some sheds. Since our houses are built very massive, there were only some roofs damaged and nobody was hurt. But I'd never seen a tornado before, and we have quite heavy floodings every other year, and it's really frightening to see the power water has and tge damage it may cause...

These kinds of weather events should remind us that we're really not as powerful as we think we are. Mother Nature could wipe us out in a heartbeat.

To anyone in the path of Matthew, please be safe. If they tell you to get out - GO! Staying in your home won't protect it from the storm but it will increase your chances of getting hurt - or worse. If you're ordered to evacuate, batten down the hatches and get the hell out while you can!

This hurricane sounds like a monster that's going to hit Florida tonight. I hope the forecasters are wrong and it won't be as devastating. It seems like most people along the west coast have heeded the warnings and have evacuated. I've never been in a situation where I had to evacuate my home and city. How scary is that? I just hope no there are no fatalities.

We're not going to get anything big here in the central part of NC, just the fringe weather, but the rain started last night and the ground is saturating already. We're in the northern suburbs of the city; lots of trees, wooded areas, green space... pretty, but as soon as the wind gusts start, you just know something is coming down on a power line sooner or later. Pain in the ass, but I shouldn't complain.

Post by What Would He Say Sun 09 Oct 2016, 14:50

party animal - not! What would he say, here's the definition of propoganda

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propaganda

So definitely not PR!

Of course you could take a completely cynical view of 'George and Amal on the Surbicon set'......

It could be part of a marketing strategy for #Surbicon #Casamigos #Monse, a #yummy apple brand and an #animal adoption sanctuary!

Jo!! How are you?

PAN....Hope you don't mind I have moved this to chitchat as it is....kinda...

The reason I asked the question is that recently an elderly relative in the US (96years young) was trying to explain the phenomenon that is The Donald...who my relative detests beyond description .....

He said years ago (ppl in the US probably have the story better than I do)....during the Vietnam War the US government were worried about the err bad state of the military's state of mind/health in dealing with the onslaught of negativity....So they put a shed load of money into "propaganda" to improve the positive mental out look of the serving men and women....

One such development was to make movies (with a positive spin on the arena of war fare)....in which they hoped to inspire the troops.....They showed the movie and tested the men immediately afterwards....It had absolutely the reverse effect, the troops felt depressed and awful when talking about the movie and how it affected them individually....

They retested the men after 12 weeks....The results were completely reversed..ALL the men had changed their attitude and taken onboard ALL the positive markers that had been put into the movie....(shame you can't do that with Critics errr NOTE to GC call 'em in for early screening)

Back to topic...my relative maintains that is what The Donald is doing....after 12 weeks people only remember the positive.....WTF.....No

But that got me thinking....propaganda is messing about with ppl's noodles?.....In the war the Nazi's had Lord Haw-Haw....who broadcast the Nazi propaganda to the UK.....

He used to sign on with "Germany calling, Germany Calling" .....right from the get go he was PR-ing...it wan't Germany calling it was the Nazi party calling....I thought that in this day and age of "social Media" can anybody "call"......Kardashians Calling, Kardashians calling......And companies and individuals who use PR should they be held accountable when "calling" is propaganda......

And yes PAN...truth to tell, I am reluctantly pointing the finger at George's Hashtags as you put it....I am also desperately hoping that all my Geese are Swans, Goosey George in particular.....I'm hoping that such a busy man pays ppl to look after that "stuff"....and perhaps "trusts them" to do a good job......

And how good is the job they do....depends if you see it as Propaganda or PR.....

WWHS- Two points: 1. Did your relative say which movie the government showed to the troops? I'm really curious, because though I'm not as old as your relative, I was around at the time and this is the first I've ever heard of it.

2. As far as Trump is concerned, no matter how much lipstick you put on that pig, he's still a pig. No amount of spin or propaganda is going to change what he is. People who are still considering voting for him, IMO, are brain dead! They're so determined to see change in our government that they don't care if that change destroys everything the country stands for. Stupid, stupid stupid!

Lizzy,
I couldn't agree more with your comment concerning Trump! And I really can't wait until tomorrow to read everything about the debate tonight and your comments here.

Abiut the change: IMO this isn't just a phenomen in the States but in many other countries as well. I know that there are many poor people everywhere, but in general we live in relatively wealth. It seems to be a matter of course for us to have a regular income, enough to eat, clean water, a home, heating and electricity. Not to forget the fact that we are quite safe - there's no absolute safety since there may always be a mentally ill person who thinks somebody tells him to kill others or an assassin who wants to kill others in the name of a god or because he was treated badly at work or his school. Not to forget mother nature with blizzards, hurricanes, floodings etc.
But this doesn't seem to be enough for many people, and I don't know what they expect. Somebody who raises his wand, and all the evil in the world disappears? The world returns to the 1950s which - for many people - seems to have been a paradise, although they weren't even born at that time or have a totally romantic memory of that era. And then they realize that that time also wasn't paradise and that there were always crimes, poverty, discrimination etc.

I sometimes have the impression that we might need a war to realize what's important...
And I absolutely don't want to experience that...

Hey,
we celebrated my husband's 50th birthday yesterday, and I want to tell you about that:
It started at midnight when our friends came to our house and celebrated him with a firework, champagne and cheers. We went to bed at about 3 a.m. and got up quite early to prepare breakfast because our neighbours showed up  for breakfast - a tradition in our neighborhood. They usually leave after two hours but stayed until I told them that my husband's family would come for coffee and cake in 30 minutes. That's how I got them out finally which gave me just enough time to clean  up the living room, put away all the beer bottles (they really had had a lot of beer) and set the table again. I'd made a birthday cake and so we had a nice coffee and cake hour with othe family. After that it was just enough time to get changed into a casual beach outfit and go to the hall to do some last-minute preparations for the party.

IT WAS JUST GREAT! One of the best parties I've ever been to! Everybody loved my decorations! We had a beach with a pool, a cocktail bar, about a hundred paper lanterns in different colours hanging from the ceiling, nice food, just for my husband created   pineapple ice-cream, everybody was in the right mood to party.
After 5 hours we had to close down our cocktail bar because we ran out of the ingredients, but that didn't stop anybody. At midnight my husband's 50th birthday ended, and his father's 80th birthday began (my husband was born one day ahead of his father's 30th birthday), and it continued. We presented both of them with a vacation, at the end of October we'll (my husband, his father, his brother and I) will go on a river cruise on the Danube for one week. We'll visit Vienna, Budapest (Hungary), Bratislava (Slowakia) and Melk, and that really was a nice surprise for both of them.
The party continued until about 3.30 a.m., and in the morning I made breakfast for everybody who'd stayed overnight with us, my parents and my sister. So we had 15 guests for breakfast, before we went to my husband's hometown to celebrate my father-in-law's birthday with his guests.
I guess you can imagine that I'm absolutely tired now, so good night, see you tomorrow!

WWHS - you got it. Propaganda is largely put out by governments.....eg the Nazis, possibly the Americans in Vietnam.......

The George stuff on the set? Not what I would call Public Relations as I know it. More like product placement as a subliminal form of advertising.

He knows all about that too..........remember when they were both leaving Tina Brown and Harry Evans' place in NYC and realised the paps were outside? He asked Tina for a copy of Harry Evans' latest book to take with him.

Also famously known for helping ER cast to get Nike stuff...........

First, congrats carolhathaway on the success of the party! And now you get to take a cruise with your husband. The icing on the cake.

Second, Trump is a horrible human being. The video tape that became public on Friday that included the degrading comments about women wasn't enough for him to act contrite in any way. He said disgusting things tonight during the debate. And lied over and over again. The only thing more disgusting tonight was Trump holding the "special" news conference prior to the debate showcasing Bill Clinton's accusers of sexual assault from nearly 20 years ago. His devoted supporters are lapping it all up. This has nothing to do with propaganda whatsoever. These people pretty much condone his behavior and think that his machismo/bravado would be good for our country. Yes, make American great again :/

IMO Trump did better in this debate than the first one, while Hillary seemed to prepare a bit less but still gave a fine performance. Did the endorsement of four women "raped" by Bill before the debate help Trump? Because I notice the Chinese Trump fans are celebrating and praising Trump on his aggressive comment "I'll put you in jail" during the debate. Do you American Clooney fans on this forum really think Hillary could end up in jail? If so, George might need to send Amal to rescue her! Very Happy
I personally think, as a woman, that Trump's words and attitude in the tapes are disgusting and unacceptable, however so many male Trump fans in our country claim it's no big deal, and that 99% of men once had those kind of "dirty" trash talk about women in private, which baffles me a lot as I know my father wouldn't talk like that and he even hates those kind of behaviors. He often warns me that I should avoid those bad, rich boys who only want to fuck you and dump you, since they could move on to the next girl pretty soon.
I really wonder if those Trump fans would let him talk about their mother, daughter or wife the way he did in the tape!

Sevens,
there will always be people who really think badly about others and don't mind telling others about that. But they should never ne in a leading position because others always see them as a good example which sees it as socially acceptable to talk like that about women. If my husband or my son would talk like that, I would never accept that.

If Bill had really raped women, he should be accused. IMO they just try to dump Hillary. But Trump isn't a virgin concerning this issue, so who lives in a glass house, shouldn't throw stones...

In a German TV show they once showed a tweed by Trump saying: 'If Hillary can't satisfy her husband, how can she satisfy a whole country?' This says everything about Trump for me...

Sad thing is the Trump fans think exactly like Trump as they assume Hillary could't satisfy his husband and Chelsea is actually somebody else's child. Their marriage is fake stunt, without love etc. Just like the Underwood couple in House of Cards.
Seriously, the drama of new season of HoC will never match this hugh real-time election!

There is the lawsuit brought against Trump for raping a 13 year old girl. There is a settled case of sexual assault of another woman back in the 1990s. Not to mention the comments made by former Apprentice contestants who were subjected to his sexist comments. There is so much out there already of derogatory comments he has made against women. I wouldn't be surprised if something else comes out about Trump before Election Day.

The debate was a joke. Clinton chose to take the high road and not get into the mud with Trump last night. There is some criticism of her performance because she didn't hit back hard enough.

The Trump supporters this morning are thrilled with his 'performance'. Trump has the majority of support of white men. What does it say about men in our country who condone the comments that Trump has made about women over the course of his career.... No wonder rape on college campuses is such a huge problem!

Let's just say that the media is in a state of bliss covering this 2016 election. It doesn't get better than this guys

I stayed up to 4am watching debate, many in my Country did.....U.S is the next parish, we worry about them....We question how it came to this?  We, as a nation, see the lighter side of life and thought he was a joke! we had so much commentary and craic about The Don ...and to brutally honest we didn't think Hillary was the best apple in the barrel either....So how did it come to this....

I don't know many if any U.S political figures....so I have no answers re; who should or could be standing there, and worthy of the esteem of the people....I thought it was interesting that the most sensible  thing Hillary said was a quote from Michelle Obama....Maybe the wrong wife ran.....

The world is a mess....I don't know how many times it has been said to me that isis would never have been tolerated 25 years ago....But I also think Trump and Clinton would not have been tolerated either.

Begs the question
Where have all the good wo/men gone.

I have heard speculation that Hillary did not really want Donald to tank so badly that the party would look more seriously into ways to dump him.  She does not want to run against some last minute substitute (if that is even possible) who might be able to take advantage of her clear weaknesses as a candidate.  Maybe she is that smart and strategic.  Or it could just be spin.

I am sure she had new things she could have needled him with and didn't. I believe there will be more to come on Trump (although how any one who has been listening the last 18 months is not convinced is beyond me)
