Thanks PAN. Been waiting to see everyone all decked out for the premiere. The men look dashing and all the women look stunning. Lots of black. So I really appreciate Amal's gown. It looks like a buttery yellow. Just beautiful.

George looked sharp in his tux - as always - and Amal's gown was absolutely wonderful but a bit difficult to walk the red carpet and the stairs, especially if it was windy as well. Lysa Heslov looked beautiful in her silver dress as well, and I'm quite happy that they colored up the scene of all the black tuxes and dresses.

I think George is in heaven. Sandwiched between two of his favorite women.

Julia looked gorgeous too. The necklace she wore was the sparkle and focal point for her black gown. Beautiful. And contrary to Lainey's view that Julia was channeling Angie Jolie, Julia has her own style. Julia's look tonight looked like Julia.

Amal though stood out to me. Her gown was amazing. The color, the fit on her and the gown's easy elegance.

Donna - Elegant, but hardly easy! Between walking all over the train, almost baring her crotch in the wind, and an almost-nip-slip, that gown must have been a nightmare to wear!

Before you go ballistic, I'm not putting her down. She looked lovely in the dress, but whoever designed it should have used their brain as much as their imagination. When worn in real life, garments face conditions not present on the runway or in the salon - things like wind and stairs and other people walking nearby. A little common sense in the design would have made the dress a lot easier for a real woman to wear.

I was referring to the fabric as being "easy". Flowy. It was a bit complicated wearing it. The train caused a bit of problem. But Amal handled it just fine. With help from her hubby and a bit of humor. Nothing of consequence was exposed. Lots of leg .....
But I've seen so much more on red carpets. In cleavage alone.

Its such a beautiful dress so I hope Amal didn't regret wearing it. IMO she stood out as one of the elegantly dressed women on the carpet.

I hope we will see more of Lysa Heslov's dress. Only saw one pic of her. It looked like a beautiful silver gown. Grant looked very cool in his tux and wearing shades.

As far as I have seen there is no dress code they can wear what they like. there were women dressed in different colors. In the the group shots on the Stairs Amal waits at the bottom  and when they have finished she goes up the stairs and joins them. If any of their dates had been with them at the bottom say Danny Moder he would have been in the pictures accompanying Julia. I have seen this before at other Cannes.

Mel - Thanks for posting the video. After seeing it I have to wonder what Amal was thinking when she decided to wear that dress. Didn't she walk around in it beforehand? Didn't she consider that  she might have problems with a long train with so many people around? Didn't she anticipate what could happen with a waist high slit on a windy day? Personally, I would have asked for a scissors and cut the damn train off!

I hope George sends notes of apology to his co-stars who spent an uncomfortable photo shoot trying not to get tangled in his wife's dress. Maybe next time she'll wear something more manageable or else wait on the sidelines with the rest of the spouses. This was supposed to be a press event for the film, and instead it turned into an Amal event. This kind of publicity may help her brand, but I don't think it will help the movie.

I think she chose the dress because she liked it, I don't think they took into account the wind how could they the weather changes.  As for the train many women wear gowns like that. For this event to me that gown was perfect next to George she looked amazing I think George was pretty happy with her and that dress.

I also think no matter what Amal wore she would have gotten the attention she is George's wife and to some she is interesting.

George does not need to apologize these people attend events like this all the time and women do wear these gowns.

Two really different perspectives from last night. Personally I didn't see anyone looking uncomfortable or upset about Amal's dress. Even Amal and George were chuckling over her misbehaving train. Everyone looked like they were enjoying a lovely evening.

I don't think any apologies are needed. The train of her dress was too long and she stepped on it. That's all. Also to me it seems like the cast was perfectly fine with Amal there. If George had preferred her not at the red carpet, he would've directed her elsewhere.

If I'm standing for a photo with the principals of a movie, in my best dress or tux and probably tight shoes and a camera-ready smile plastered on my face, then had to wait while a woman who isn't even in the movie had to deal with her slit and train, I would be miffed.

If I were the non-principal woman with the slit and the train, I would apologize to the people who were being photographed because they actually made the movie, and I had forced them to wait. And I would do so without the help or insistence of my over-indulgent husband.

Way2Old - AMEN! And if you watch the video Melbert posted you can see the other gentlemen in the photo shoot more focused on trying not to step on her  dress than on posing with their co-stars. I don't care how many other women wear dresses like this, IMO a little more thought should have gone into whether it was a practical choice for the event.

If she loved the dress so much that she had to wear it, the least she could have done was have them shorten the train so other people didn't have to spend the night avoiding stepping on it. This was a crowded event, not a runway show.

The length of the train is directly proportional to the amount of attention. Ask Beyonce and Rihanna -- both of whom make their livings being the center of attention at certain functions. (But they bring a paid staffer to handle their trains, and don't need to have an event person leave other duties to attend to them.)

I get the appeal of the dress. I get the need to live up to or past expectations. I just think a little more consideration was in order. "Oh, this dress is a handful and I don't want you to have to deal with it. Go ahead and do your shoot, and we can do our photos at the bottom of the stairs later."

The dressed was designed that way so she wore it, I don't think any of the people there cared what Amal wore. It was not about her. As for the photo she did what she was supposed to stay at the bottom until the stars finished and then joined them. This is how it is done I have seen this before.

How about she wanted to look good and make George proud which I think she did.

Long trains on dresses are not new she is not the first to wear one, no matter what she wore she would have gotten
the attention , like it or not she is George's wife. Next time it won't be that interesting the press will be over her.

Mmm, well George was very aware of what she was wearing. He mentioned it to camera somewhere and said there could be a lot of fun with the train...

As for stealing others' thunder that's exactly what I thought. But then you look at the newsreel and it looks as tho she lost her handler - and I don't mean George - becos everywhere else things went to plan, she was sitting somewhere else inside and Bryan Lourd looks after her on the way out until His Nibs goes to meet her.

But that would explain all the giggles between them at the top of the stairs......

And as we know, the whole event is bonkers - in a nice way  -with different promotions and different stars turning to promote on other films' premiere nights........

PAN, I guess I don't think she stole anyone's thunder. Whether she had a handler or not the whole dress situation just seems overblown. We know that she and George have good senses of humor so I suspect they just dealt with it and laughed about it. And it wasn't about her.  In the scheme of events last night at Cannes this seems so trivial.  There were lots of stars out, wearing a number of attractive and not so attractive gowns.  Lots of people interviewed.  Amal wasn't the focus.  She wasn't interviewed.  But anytime she is out she gets attention.  So did lots of people walking the red carpet.

why is she standing with the actual stars... are you serious, melbert???????????????????  Because she's brilliant, she's a fashion icon................honey-they're spending a whole lot of money to make her famous..emperor's new clothes, baby, emperor's new clothes.  After 2 years, you haven't learned this?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] can't copy the photo, but she's got her hand under his jacket on his ass. Real class. . And let's not forget the perennial gazing into each other's eyes cause we're so in love pose.

So, what's all this mean, IMO.... and I really hope I'm wrong about this...........take the focus off a less than stellar movie premier at Cannes, and focus on the oops shots of her struggling so beautifully in an awkward fashion moment.

She wore yellow to stand out.  She wore a long train to stand out.  She posed with the STARS cuz' George wanted her to stand out.  WHY?  Because she's his wife?  So what!  SHE wasn't in the movie and should not have stood out!  Yes, the others were distracted by the train.  Watch the video again.

Any of the others could have worn another color they chose to wear dark colors. Thee are no rules that say you have to wear black. And she stood out so what this was not about Amal she dressed to accompany her husband .
What was important was the movie her dress will have nothing to do with whether that movie fails or not. They all got dressed and went to the premiere Amal in a  Yellow dress and Julia with no shoes on the carpet.

They all looked like they had a good time and it was a good evening when they were leaving.

And Caitriona had a few wardrobe malfunctions the same day by flashing her underwear:

I had seen another pic of the whole cast where she stands next to George but can't find it at the moment.

Think Jessica Chastain looked the best on the red carpet. Her dress was simple and stunning at the same time. Loved her hair and jewellery too. For me her clothes fitted the best.

The whole Amal-parade made me angry so much. I know I shouldt tell everything I think but I really like to as Im entitled to write down my opinion. As I saw Jodie's face she didnt look happy at all. Especially when Amal after the 100th times flipped and played with her dress. I mean if you dont know how to wear something or how its going to work on the red carpet then dont wear it!!
Honestly made me ill watching her trying to prove how important and famous she is at that night which btw wasnt and shouldnt have been her night at all. She could have easily just showed up, posing with hubby a few mins then go upstairs and wait inside until the photocall is taking place with the cast as its their time to shine and promote the movie.

It didnt help that she stood out with her giant yellow gown and that long train with her skinny grotesque figure. Like she could have easily disappeared at any time inside the layers of the dress.

Think this was the last time I wrote a comment about her as it turns out I just really cant stand such an unrealistic and  overacted exhibitionism. I dont think the next time - as Im sure there will be a lot of premiere/festive/happening etc. time in the future- I will be able to stop myself from using such a bad language.

Btw I would be really curious how she would react when a bunch of actors would just show up and 'd start posing and distracting attention from her at supreme court or when she's working.

DoubleZoe, you're absolutely entitled to your opinion. Just as there are many Amal fans here, there are others who are less taken with her and don't think everything she does is perfect just because she's married to George. Feel free to post your opinions - just try to keep it civil! Smile

I absolutely and totally agree! That was the point I was trying to make in my earlier post. I can't imagine she didn't try the dress on beforehand. If she didn't anticipate the problems she'd have, the people around her should have! IMO, her only excuse would be that she literally had nothing else appropriate to wear.

I agree she didn't belong in the cast photos, but I blame George for that. He seems determined to treat her as if she's another one of his wannabe girlfriends who craves media attention to build their career. Who knows? Maybe she is just like that. Or maybe that's the only way he knows to show his affection. In his world, if I like you I make you a star.

Well, that's a little harsh. Not that I haven't been that annoyed with her myself, but you need to take a breath before you let it out. According to her supporters she can't help being skinny, and pointing it out is mean. I think it's just a statement of fact, but what do I know?

Very Happy I'd love to see her face! Somehow, I don't think she'd appreciate it at all.

Oh, and by the way - to those who still think she's not a celebrity: Amal and her thigh gap were the lead story on TMZ yesterday. According to them it apparently goes all the way up to her crotch. They had pictures. The Kartrashians better watch their backs! Very Happy
