The star of Hail, Caesar! on American politics, the Oscars race row and his favourite performer of all time

What you see is what you get with George Clooney. Over the course of 30 major films, and one seminal TV medical drama, the actor has made a career out of being the dashing matinee idol – both on screen and off.
Whether he’s playing Danny Ocean, the gang leader in the Ocean 11 heist movies, or meeting fans on the red carpet, the 54-year-old is never less than charm personified. Highly polished and beautifully coiffured (a recent survey revealed that the perfect man would have Clooney’s hair), he emulates the devil-may-care nonchalance of a Cary Grant or Clark Gable.
But get him on the subject of Donald Trump – the loud-mouthed billionaire who has divided the Republican party, and mystified the world, with his campaign for the American presidency – and that famous sangfroid disappears.

"This is an election cycle and we tend to go through some craziness,” he says when I ask about ‘The Donald’. “The idea that this xenophobic, fascist theory that we are going to ban Muslims from our country or we are going to kick 12 million Mexicans back down to the border and build a wall they are going to pay for - none of that is ever going to happen.
“This country isn't going to do that. All this chatter is going to be going around for another two or three months but eventually all the insanity will stop and we will start to talk about issues that really matter."
It may be wishful thinking. Against all expectations, eight months after declaring his candidacy, Trump is still leading the field of Republican nominees, despite, or perhaps because of a series of outrageous pronouncements. This week could be decisive. If Trump sweeps the board when a dozen states and one territory vote on “Super Tuesday”, the nomination will almost certainly be his.
But Clooney – a diehard Democrat and a fervent supporter of President Obama – refuses to countenance the thought.
Clooney admits that he, too, has been guilty of hiring only white actors on the five films he’s directed

“I feel very confident that, in the end, the issues will matter,” he says.
We are talking in the Four Seasons hotel in Beverly Hills where Clooney has come to publicise his latest film, a new Coen Brothers comedy set in the golden age of Hollywood called Hail, Caesar!

Clooney plays veteran movie idol, Baird Whitlock, an amiable buffoon who is kidnapped while filming a Ben-Hur style epic, causing a huge problem for studio fixer Eddie Mannix, played by Josh Brolin.
To be honest, the role is not exactly a stretch for Clooney. Not only is he obsessed with old Hollywood but he also has a well-documented penchant for practical jokes (he once attached a bumper sticker to Brad Pitt’s car that bore the legend “F**k cops") which must have helped him with the film’s slapstick scenes.
"I know something about the 1950s," he says. And so he should because his first father-in-law was Oscar-winner Martin Balsam, and his aunt and uncle, whom he lived with when he moved to LA from his native Kentucky in his twenties, were singer Rosemary Clooney and Oscar-winning actor Jose Ferrer.
“My aunt Rosemary's house was party central for a long, long time and she and Jose would throw these wonderful parties," he recalls. “When he was 20 my father spent the night there drinking with Marlene Dietrich. Gregory Peck and his wife Veronique used to have big parties too and I would go there and Jack Lemmon would be playing the piano and it was a fun, exciting time."
Clooney himself has watched all the epics that were made in the Forties and Fifties.
"When I grew up and was going to the movies they weren't making those Technicolour movies or sword-and-sandals epics, but television showed them all so I would watch Spartacus and Ben-Hur over and over again and those films were so much fun.
“The Robe was always on at Easter and we watched the Wizard of Oz on a black and white television so for years I didn't know that it changed colour halfway through."
Clooney says he based his character in Hail, Caesar! on Victor Mature.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Clooney starred alongside Sandra Bullock in Alfonso Cuarón's 2013 sci-fi blockbuster GravityCredit: Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures
“Victor Mature is one of my favourite performers of all time," he says. "He tried to get into the Los Angeles Country Club but they told him, 'I'm sorry Mr. Mature, we don't allow actors as members.' And he said: 'I have 75 films to prove I am not an actor.'
"Those epics are funny but they only work because everyone takes them completely seriously. If there is any sort of winking at all, they completely fall apart. Why I loved Victor Mature is he still had an accent like he was from New Jersey or the Bronx and his hair was always died black and I just love the idea of a guy who says, 'Alright, let's go do another one of these sandals movies and then I'll go and hit the golf course.' He is one of my favourites."
Hollywood has changed a lot since then, of course, but the run up to this year’s Oscars, which take place on Sunday, has been dominated by a row over the absence of any black actors from the shortlist. It has led to a pledge by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to improve the diversity of the voters who decide the nominations and criticism by many that studios are simply not making enough films about black people.
Clooney admits that he, too, has been guilty of hiring only white actors on the five films he’s directed.
“Chris Rock [Sunday's Oscars host] said he didn’t recognise anybody who greenlights films, that [none of them] looks like him, and that is where we are at and I think that is the most important part.
“I brought this up and someone said, 'Well, you haven't directed films with African-Americans in the lead' and that's true, but four out of the five films I’ve directed have been historical films and you can't really change the race of those people.”
He thinks the reforms announced by the Academy are a step in the right direction.
“It's good the Academy is bringing in more diversity and they should and we all agree they need to pay more attention to that," he says. "But they have had many years when that hasn't been an issue. It's good they’re bringing a lot of younger and more ethnic people into the fray.”
Clooney himself is a veteran campaigner. He supports various charities and has brought attention to humanitarian crises like Darfu, Haiti and the 2004 Asian tsunami. At a time when most celebrities are nervous about speaking up on hot button issues he has been vocal about topics ranging from Iraq to gay rights.
Clooney and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, occasionally throw parties at their English home on a 5.5 acre island in the Thames at Sonning Eye. But they are very different types of get-togethers from the old-style Hollywood parties.
"It's not with a lot of famous people," he says. "It ends up being with a lot of politicians. My wife just got President Nasheed released from solitary confinement in the Maldives after he was jailed for political reasons and he came over to the house to say hello.
"It's less about stars and more about people that she and I work with in other parts of our lives."
They divide their time between their homes in Los Angeles, Italy and England but he admits the major problem for the couple is finding time to see each other.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Clooney in Hail, Caesar!
"We have to figure out our schedules," he says. "Our deal is that neither of us can be away for more than a week and so far, in general, that’s worked out pretty well."
They will certainly be together tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles as they join the rest Hollywood in the annual back-slapping ceremony. Clooney, of course, will look his usual suave self in black tie. But he has sympathy for Amal.
"It's a difficult thing when you're a woman trying to get ready for a ceremony because it has to be a dress nobody else has worn and hair and makeup has to be right and I'm playing basketball until half an hour before we have to go,“ he says. “It’s really not fair on her.”

The Telegraph is saying that he and Amal will be at the Oscars tomorrow.  It's not a direct quote from George and I think most of us thought he wasn't attending.  Interesting.  Either Telegraph is making an assumption or .....

And since the interview was for Hail Caesar promotion I would think it would have taken place a few weeks ago.
It seems that some of these quotes I have read in other articles.

Donna,
I had the same feeling that it wasn't a 'real exclusive interview' but small parts of other interviews. I bought some magazines since George's visit in Berlin was mentioned, and you wouldn't believe who got exclusive interviews Rolling Eyes
In the interview which was mentioned here I wasn't sure about whether they talked about the oscars which will be tomorrow of the pre-oscar party which will take place today (but not at the Dolby Theatre, I guess)...

I think this interview was recent and they're going to be at the Oscars. The writer references them twice. Once when he says "...the Oscars, which take place on Sunday", then again when he says "They will certainly be together at the Dolby Theater in  Los Angeles as they join the rest of Hollywood in the annual back-slapping ceremony".

A "Hail Caesar" event is not an annual back-slapping event. Besides, with all the controversy surrounding the Oscars this year I think George would definitely want to be there to support the Academy.

Mm,  well, John Hiscock is a Telegraph writer based in LA, and has done many interviews with His Nibs.

But I think he was with many other journalists from world outlets in the Four Seasons for the Hail Caesar junket.

The article's been published ahead of the Oscars in the Telegraph magazine and he's pulled out the Trump statement as headline because it's timely.

As for the Oscars, the Clooneys are not on any advance list - and I can't imagine he'd be there unless he was presenting. We'll see.

My guess is he'll be at the event tonight tho - just like last year..........

I'm going to record it because it's Sunday night for us in Europe...
So I guess I'll be able to watch it Monday in the evening. I did it as well last year and was really disappointed because I thought it was boring compared to the shows hosted by Jon Stewart and Ellen de Generes. I also don't expect George to be there, and if he should be it would be a bonus.

That article is a mish mash of things George has said he said most of those things during the  Hail Caesar premier. Maybe the writer was assuming he would be there.

I think he will be at tonight's event not at the Oscar's he really has no reason to be there. I can't see him putting on a tux for no reason if he is not presenting or

receiving an award.

Chris was talking about how the women on the red carpet always get asked what they are wearing.  Men don't (well actually they do but there never is as much fuss about the men).  Anyway, Chris said something to the effect that it's not news when the men are all wearing black tuxes.  Now, if George Clooney came wearing a lime green suit with a dragon's tail coming out of his ass that would worth talking about
(I'm paraphrasing).  It was funny when Chris said it and got quite a laugh from the audience.

The show was ok but it was pretty political.  Lots of comments from Chris about the diversity issue in Hollywood.  Even Vice President Biden was there and introduced Lady Gaga's original song performance. He was there to support a new effort for people to speak up when they are aware of sexual abuse of men and women.  And Gaga's song was centered around this theme.

I do wonder about that though. I wish George would have expanded on that comment. Seems to me when you are going to direct a movie the director primarily and possibly the producers come up with a cast. Possibly they send a list of the actors in contention to the studio and the studio in turn goes back to them with who it will support and who it won't. Is that what George was saying???

Anyway an excellent and candid interview. Like that he takes some blame for being part of the problem in Hollywood. And he is so right about the lack of any international news making the airwaves in the states right now. You got to read the New York Times to get any sense of what's going on overseas.

I remember I read an interview with Kirsten Dunst a while ago and she talked about why she decided to add a second citizenship some years ago and became German as well (her father was German). She said that it's sometimes an advantage to have dual citizenship because they sometimes accept only a limited number of Americans on set (I think it has to do with financing a movie). So they choose to have an American writer and one actor. And then they can choose her, and she wouldn't count as an American actor but as a European which would fulfill the demands.

So there's a lot going around we don't know about...

Carolhathaway - I think that's a way of ensuring that there's work for their own people. I don't know if that's done here, too but I know there are a lot of actors from all over the world acting in movies made here.

As far as there being a "list" I'm sure there is one in the sense that the studios want a bankable "name" cast. They want to make as much money as possible and, until recently, that meant casting from a relatively small pool of actors who were guaranteed to draw an audience. That seems to be changing, so maybe the concept of a "list" will change, too.

WWHS - Some of the talking heads were discussing the primary results and said Trump's base is mainly blue-collar white males with less than a college education. Not surprising. The most disaffected group. People who are getting screwed by the economy and looking for someone to blame.

It's so sad. Do thy really think Trump would look at them twice if he wasn't trying to get their votes? They're gum on the sole of his shoe, and he'll scrape them off at the earliest opportunity.

George Clooney: "Donald Trump is insane" Empty Re: George Clooney: "Donald Trump is insane"

Post by fava Mon 07 Mar 2016, 20:14

I have a neighbor who is a Trump voter. She is college educated, with a great and lucrative management career in the financial services area.  Her social views are very conservative (anti-gay marriage, pro-gun, etc).  She likes Trump because she feels she has been biting her tongue for years because every one is "too politically correct".  She hates to be made to feel like a bad person when she makes a negative comment about some group.  "He tells it like he sees it" --in other words, the fact that he has no filter appeals to her. Not a reason I would vote for someone, but that is how she feels.  She does not trust politicians because most of them have little "real world" management or business experience.

A study last week showed the most accurate factor predicting a Trump voter was a belief in authoritarianism (more than education, income, etc.)  Scary for our US democracy

fava - Not being a fan of political correctness myself, please forgive me when I say your friend is proof positive that higher education is no guarantee of intelligence.

She likes him because he validates her desire to say whatever she wants without having to think if it is rude or hurtful? What is she going to do when the witch-hunts start? Trump has said he wants to do away with freedom of the press because the media don't say nice things about him all the time. Can freedom of speech be far behind?.Apparently he's the only one allowed to say nasty things to people.

This is a vulgar man who has no respect for the things this country stands for. He is willing to dismantle the Constitution to serve his own ends. Louis C.K. was right and people like your friend need to wake up!

Thanks fava for your comments about your neighbor.  I actually don't know anyone who is a Trump supporter.
If I had a friend who was I'm not sure what I would or could say to them.  It's a very heated topic.

Trump wants to appropriate himself as king of our country.  And there are many people who are willing to fall into line and support him.  No matter what.  It's almost like people are blind to any faults he may have.  People say they like that he is politically incorrect.  These people have completely misunderstood his rude, obnoxious, bullying and vile comments for political incorrectness.

I suspect there are a lot of dirty dealings that this man has been involved in over the decades.  But his followers don't care.  They have so little regard for the people in our government and who are running our country.  They are willing to forgive him any discretions.

Lizzy I so agree.  He is a vulgar man.  And an embarrassment to our country.

Jon Voight is a Republican, supported G.W. Bush and Sarah Palin, critizised Obama and is close to the Tea Party. So for me that's no surprise that Voight supports Trump.
I just ask myself what his daughter Angelina thinks about that...
I don't think they are on the same political line.

But of course there are two different political camps with supporters on each side.

Hands up I know sweet FA about US politics....but my well worn, bad ass gut tells me that either side don't look so rosy....

The Donald, nuff said.....BUT the fragrant Hilary, really?....Is she the only hope America has.....

History has a habit of repeating itself....be careful America....while you are concentrating on the very important decision of POTUS....Look to see if you are missing something.....

I have heard it said that The Donald is a decoy....but why not Hilary too.....

Keep track of what is happening in the world outside U.S....That is where the rise and fall will happen.....

Be the President of your own world.....What would you do, if you don't have a line, a strategy.....then don't expect your POTUS to have one for you....

I know, I'm Irish we do come out with some crap....we are a nation of gabbers.....one of those gabbers said "Ask not what your Country can do for you etc....."

That was the 60's, a very innocent time....if he said it now he would change the word Country to World....Blame t'internet web....I do.....

Pin your colours to the mast of you....

WWhs your right I have heard that said as well Trump is the decoy , but who they want to be president I don't know.

Bernie Saunders would probably be good but lets be honest they all have their draw backs.

There are no perfect people and definitely no perfect politicians.

All I know is the fact that Trump has gotten so far says a lot about America we are sliding backwards .

Unfortunately many Americans are uniformed about our government, international and national issues.  And many Trump supporters just don't feel they need to know what the facts of important issues are.  They like the way Trump talks.  They can identify with his rhetoric.  Trump is not very articulate at all.  Maybe people like that too. He talks on their level, not above them.   And just this morning he claimed that all of Islam hates Americans.  Oh boy.

I don't think he is a decoy.  Im not sure he thought he would be as successful as he has turned out but once he pushed the right buttons he found he had a solid following. Remember he was the person who started the birther controversy about Obama back in 2012.  A lot of people never let go of that.  I think he saw a real opening.

There is no perfect candidate.  Hillary and Bernie both have their negatives.  But far less than Rubio or Cruz on the Republican side IMO.  The Donald is in a league of his own.

Every politician has made compromises during his or her career, even if it's just to support an industry in his or her district. Which is what they had been voted for, but it may also lead to an unequal treatment once the politician applies for a position in national politics...

But since people like to simplify and categorize, and neither politics nor life is just black and white...

And it's always easier to believe that everything which goes wrong is somebody else's fault.
"We're the good guys, they're the bad ones!"
"We're the greatest!"
"If you vote for me, everything will be as good as it was 50 years ago!" (and since most people either haven't lived at that time or glorified those times, they believe it)
"Everything that goes wrong is the fault of the strangers in our country / of the jews / of the muslims!"
"We're going to attack every country and government which doesn't share our values!"
There are politicians like Trump everywhere.

carolhathaway I was reading a New York Times article the other day about the Alternative for Germany party headed by a woman Frauke Petry.  Her politics and message seems similar to what Trump is advocating.  It sounds like a  far right, nationalistic group hell bent on getting rid of Merkel for allowing refugees into the country.  And seems there is a large following supporting this group. Supposedly she made a statement that refugees should be shot at the border if they try to enter illegally.  Am I reading that right?

George Clooney: "Donald Trump is insane" Empty Re: George Clooney: "Donald Trump is insane"

Donna,
that's what really worries me about that.
I always thought that after Hitler and the Nazis we're immune to that - but it turns out we're not...

I had talked about it in the February Chit Chat.
This 'Alternative for Germany' (AfD) was founded a few years ago by some people - most of them weren't politicians - because they thought that the Euro doesn't work anymore. So they fought Greece and were quite aggressive and one-dimensional about that. Then the refugees crisis started, more and more refugees came to the EU, especially to Germany, and now it's all about them. Most of the former leaders left the party or were forced to leave it because its orientation has just changed.

And some weeks ago Frauke Petry, the new leader of this party, was asked in an interview how refugees could be restrained to come to Germany, and she said that the border patrol has to protect the border, and that they had to shoot refugees if necessary. Afterwards another leader of the AfD, Beatrix von Storch, (a member of the European Parliament, elected nearly two years ago because of the Euro crisis) was asked what she thought about what Frauke Petry had said. And she answered that she thinks the same but they shouldn't shoot children.
What really worried me about that was that many people who commented that on social medias, agreed with that!

The day before yesterday a member of a right-wing Greece party in the European Parliament said nasty things about Turks, generalized it. So yesterday the President of the European Parliament suspended him from the ongoing meeting and said that he had been crossing a line by judging a whole nation and that the Parliament will not accept that.

And that's exactly what it is: they start talking issues and wait for reactions. And many people seem to agree with that so they have won. And even if not, they have at least caused headlines, people talk about them, and then they've won as well...

We'll have elections for state parliaments in three federal states in Germany on Sunday, and I really fear for too many AfD-votes...

I can't believe that there are that many people in America that agree with Trump and think the way he does. I especially hope there aren't enough to make him President , I want to believe that there are more intelligent people out there that understand the problems we face and see that Trump is wrong.

I didn't think he would get this far but he has I guess at this point all we in America can do is hope he doesn't get the nomination and if he does the one's who know he is wrong will have to come out and vote.

It has been said that President Obama is to blame for the craziness in the Republican party .
This happens after a two term president , people want something different than what they have had and apparently
Trump fits the bill for some.

George Clooney: "Donald Trump is insane" Empty Re: George Clooney: "Donald Trump is insane"

Post by carolhathaway Fri 11 Mar 2016, 12:24

One thought just came to my mind:
George and others said that you - as Americans - go through this crazy time every once in a while when there's an election. And everything the candidates want, promise and demand is not going to happen.

But apparently many people want to believe everything that is said as a campaign pledge like - in Trump's case - to ban muslims from the U.S., to send Mexicans back, to build a wall and let Mexico pay for it, to make America great again...
It's obvious for everybody who is able to think that these pledges are not going to happen, no matter if Trump should win or not (hopefully). But what about the people who did believe in everything he had promised? He has raised expectations and demands, has made them think that they will have a much better life. And then they will surely be disappointed, and they need somebody to blame for it. And I'm pretty sure it won't be Trump. He will find somebody else they can blame for it.

I don't know a better way to describe what I'm thinking.
It's like showing someone the ideal life if they just did something for you, and once he did it you tell him that he can't have this ideal life because this doesn't exist. Of course we can't prevent anybody from his too naive expectations, but maybe we should be prepared for reactions due to disappointment...

Yes , they will find a scapegoat, some how I think that it will be Obama some how everything they don't get or isn't agreed to will be twisted to be his fault even though he is no longer president.

Thanks carolhathaway for your thoughts on the current political situation in Germany. I know you have discussed before but couldn't remember where you spoke about this. So thanks. Seems that there are some very clear parallels in both of our countries ...

annemarie scapegoat is exactly right. And Obama is the easy scapegoat for all those feeling disaffected. My husband always says after every crisis, or even a snow storm, that we hear about in the news ... well you know it's Obama's fault.

There are many reasons why Trump is where he is right now and most of those reasons can be attributed to the Republican Party. That party is coming apart at the seams. They have done a lousy job of putting credible and moderate politicians in the Congress. They made promises to their supporters for years which they could not keep. The U.S. recession played a big part in adding to people's frustration and anger.

But I do think once we get to the general election campaign Trump's support is going to take a hit. Nationwide his poll numbers are very negative. It's only about a third of the voters who really support him .... mostly Republicans. Hope I'm not just wishful thinking!

I wonder if the media will ever take responsibility for the monster they created? Not that the Republicans haven't done more than their share to destroy their own party, but when Trump first started campaigning the media all thought it was sooo funny. They couldn't stop covering his antics. The more coverage they gave him, the more he amped up his act to give them something to cover. He is, after all, a walking reality show pandering to the worst instincts in all of us.

They thought he was a clown who wasn't really serious about running, and I believe in the beginning it was true. But as he started to get attention from voters (attention fanned by the media) he began to think winning was something he could really do - something he really started to want - just so he could say he beat everyone else. (I still don't think he really wants to actually do the job of being President.)

Now the stupidity of the media is coming back to haunt us. If they hadn't ignored everyone else and drowned us in Trump coverage for months - the "OMG, look what he did now!" kind of coverage - he wouldn't be where he is today. They're beginning to realize what they've done, but I'm afraid it may be too late.

Do you all know 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' by Goethe?

There's one sentence in this poem which came to my mind when I thought about all that:

'Ah, here comes the master!
I have need of thee.
From the spirits that I called,
Sir, deliver me!'
