Re: February 2016 Chit Chat
I always enjoyed reading stories about Trump because in the past I thought he would never have a chance to become presidential candidate.
I guess I'm wrong, and if the Republican alternative would be Cruz I wouldn't be happier if I were U.S. citizen and Republican...
But can I tell you something? We've got a new party in Germany who calls itself 'Alternative for Germany' (AfD).
They first started with bashing Greece because of their financial crisis and wanted Germany to leave the Eurozone. They actually had some people who made quite interesting complaints (constructive critics). Then, suddenly, this party found a new theme: Refugees which they constantly call immigrants. They became quite radical so most of the intelligent people left the party, and now the leaders talk about building upnfences and walls at the borders and shooting people who want to come to Germany. Most of it is populism - the German-Austrian border has a length of about 550 miles (including the Alps), the German-Czech border about 500 miles, and then we also would have to close our border to Poland with a length of 300 miles. No problem to close them since everything was opened because of Schengen, and we also have no border patrols anymore.
But do you know what worries me the most? If you read comments on social medias (I know I shouldn't do it but then you don't know why people are so frustrated)? People agree with that! Of course you can shoot someone who's coming to Germany because he has no right to do so! So that's a crime which justifies the use of weapons! But - just against men and women, not against children!
This so much sounds like Trump, and I'm asking myself in which world we live...
Up to 1989 we had a border with self-shooting-devices (I still know this vocabulary) on the other side, and people who wanted to leave the GDR were shot. Do people forget so easily?

Carolhathaway - IMO we're living in a world where many people aren't thinking rationally. They're reacting out of fear, and people like Donald Trump are taking advantage of that. I'm disgusted with all our politicians and only wish there was a candidate who had something positive and practical to offer. That would be someone I could vote for.

Yes, it's terrifying me. The UK's the same: we're even talking about pulling out of Europe - and this is coming from our main political party, not some whackjob extremist.

Re: February 2016 Chit Chat
In the case of a Trump and even Cruz I have BIG problems with the people who support these guys. Their supporters are looking for easy answers and swift action. Enough with diplomacy and compromise. I think so many of their supporters are not that informed and really don't understand how government works. And at this point they don't care. It's naive to say the least. Trump in particular plays on that naivety.
Whoever is the next President HAS to work with the Congress. Unfortunately Obama has even had to come to terms with his hope and change vision. Sadly. The far right just refused to give an inch to any legislation that was supported by him. And the atmosphere stirred up by the far right made it even more difficult for moderates in either party to convince anyone to pass anything. So hence a nonfunctional Congress. Although there are a number of decent politicians who want to do their jobs the extreme element in Congress won't work with them.
Therefore not much has been accomplished by the current Congress ... or the last one for that matter.
The idea that Trump thinks he can make things happen his way if he becomes President is laughable and the people who support him should know better. Unfortunately they are blinded by the light.
And I agree with previous posts that fear mongering is a major player. I think it's up to all of us as adults not to give in to the rhetoric we here from all these politicians. We need to stay levelheaded and not overreact. The world is NOT coming to an end as some of these extreme politicians would like us to believe.

Re: February 2016 Chit Chat
1) It isn't naive, it's plain freakin' ignorant! Having been a teacher for more years than I care to count I can tell you we have stopped educating in this country. Many of our "students" know nothing about our country - our history, our government, our laws. They know they have rights, though. However, what those rights are might just depend on which cop show they watched on tv last night.Donnamarie wrote:1) I think so many of their supporters are not that informed and really don't understand how government works. I'm not a conservative, but I am a bit old fashioned. Civics should be taught on every grade level and civic and moral responsibility need to be taught alongside the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
2) I think both sides are to blame. Even decent candidates end up beholden to pressure groups and lobbyists in order to get funding for a campaign. It is ridiculously expensive to run for office, especially on the national level and until something is done to correct that these guys are going to say what the money people want to hear and suck up to them once they're elected.
3) If we keep going the way we are we'll get a lot closer to blowing ourselves to bits. I don't know the answers, but I don't think anyone running for the presidency does either.

Re: February 2016 Chit Chat
It's really interesting to see and read thatvwe all seem to feel the same about politics. I even thought: "We didn't have a war for more than 70 years, maybe we just feel too comfortable and need something that shows us how important and valuable peace, democracy and freedom are, and that they are not self-evident." But therefore we would just need to listen to people who'd gone through hell to come to a country where they are not attacked or starving - and we got more than one million of them during the last year...
And yes, I think you're right: They cause fear and they make politics with the - maybe normal - suspiciousness we all have to everything which is not as we are - look differently, speak another language or even just another dialect.
Politics is also never just black and white - there are so many shades of gray inbetween...
We tend to idealize a person and think he or she's a saint. After a while we realize that it's just a humsn being who's not perfect, and he or she also has to make compromises and deals to continue to work. Sometimes I think that those who just critizise should be in the position to be responsible. Not that they need to discover what it means to lead, but for their supporters to see that they would fall flat as much as the others do. If there was a recipe for peace, health and wealth for the whole world somebody would have found it already (or maybe somebody has found it and was assassinated immediately afterwards ).
One guy from our village is somebody who always critizises everything, politics, economists etc., locally as well as nationwide and globally, he always writes letters to our local newspaper and wants them to be published. I met him the other day at our local pub, and he grumbled about a business decision our mayor had just made. I recommended him to go into politics to have an influence on these decisions (because the mayor decided this with our council). Then he went on to talk about our chancellor. Nobody has asked him about that. He would let the refugees stay at the borders, wouldn't feed them, wouldn't give them a home. So I tried to explain to him that we don't have referendums in Germany and that we elect people to decide things for our country. He didn't stop so I was a bit unfair and told him that nobody asked me either if want to pay for his living. This guy had gone to school for 13 years, went to university for five years and never took a real job. Now he's in his fifties, and my taxes are still used to pay for his living, there was no referendum about that. I guess he won't talk to me again .
I think sometimes you really have to talk back to people who just talk bulls..t.

Glad to see there is general agreement about Trump. The idea that in the US democracy he can accomplish things as president through the sheer force of his personality is ludicrous. I am astounded by his narcissism and I'm not sure he even really believes half of the stuff he says as it is so off-the-cuff and ego-driven. And don't get me started on his temperament....

Re: February 2016 Chit Chat
Mel,
I think you're right. We've had discussions about politics and Trump every month, and I guess it's going to dominate the monthly chit chat threads - well, maybe till November when it's all over!
By the way: Cruz won in Iowa, but Trump was very close. What do you Americans think about that? Did Cruz get so many votes because people really prefer his politics, or did they just want to vote for the lesser of the two evils?
Sorry if this question should offend somebody here (I'm sure there are Republicans here as well), I'm quite conservative and also christian as well but Cruz' opinions are just too conservative and religious for me, in my opinion they are a step backwards. And Trump - well...
I'm not sure about the Democrats. Don't know if I would vote for Clinton or Sanders, I think they both have positions I like and others I wouldn't agree with. And the voters seem to feel the same...
It's actually interesting to watch the election process from the 'outside'.

Carolhathaway: I know many US democrats who do not think Cruz is the lesser of two evils. Sad to say, there many areas in which he may be worse than Trump.
I'd be fine with an election thread within the party in the kitchen area.

If there are enough people who want to talk about this, then I'm fine with someone opening a new thread in this part of the forum. Otherwise, if it's just going to be a few people sharing their thoughts from month to month, then the chit chat thread is fine.fava wrote:I'd be fine with an election thread within the party in the kitchen area.

Re: February 2016 Chit Chat
Cruz appealed to the religious right ... the evangelicals in Iowa. Which there are quite a few. And I agree with fava. Cruz is just as dangerous as Trump. Just in a different way. He was happy to be a part of shutting down our federal government a couple of years ago. He is currently a senator and he is not well liked in the Congress.
I don't put a lot of weight into the Iowa Caucuses. Many past winners never go on to become President. And Iowa is not that representative of the U.S. as a whole. Especially in terms of diversity.
If it seems necessary I am fine with a separate election thread too.

Just curious, but do you guys have an equivalent to our Groundhog Day? Asking a rodent when Spring is coming has to be one of our stupidest traditions!

LOL Katiedot. Bowl really refers to the shape of the stadium where football games are played. They are shaped like a bowl. They are circular and the seating rises up all around from the playing field.

Yep, something similar: we've got St Swithun's day (can't be bothered to google when it is). The story is that if it's raining on St Swithun's day, it'll continue to rain for another 40 days.LizzyNY wrote:Just curious, but do you guys have an equivalent to our Groundhog Day? I actually made pancakes for pancake day (shrove tuesday)! First time in forever AND I didn't poison anyone! I like to think of that as a win. The fact that we had to buy a new frying owing to scorch marks on the old one that just wouldn't come off is entirely irrelevant!

Does baking cupcakes (vanilla with raspberry icing) with my ten-year-old granddaughter count? Especially since I'm in the middle of a 30-day 'no junk sugar' thing and didn't/won't eat any?

Re: February 2016 Chit Chat
I'm in a real good mood because I just got tickets for my husband for two Springsteen concerts in Munich and Berlin (after New York didn't work). The only thing which upsets me is that I won't be able to go due to other appointments.
But he's really happy and that's important for me...

That's great carolhathaway. I remember you had tried getting tickets for the New York concert with no luck. And you got tickets for two concerts! Sounds like your husband is a lucky man. To have you!

it's me - That article was fun. Some of those look-alikes are really hard to tell apart. The writers even mixed up Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal! They say everyone has a double somewhere, so maybe we do too!
Carolhathaway, congratulations! I hope he has a great time.

Aaah I kind of missed the February chit chat. Sorry didn't see it before. February doesn't exist for me this year. I wait for March LOL.
I'm doing ok. Thanks. I hope you too. All my bones are back on track hehe.
Only thing I have since two weeks is something with my ears. I have a problem with my balance. Did you know that your equilibrium is in your inner ear? I didn't. Something is not in place as it should be in my ear which can happen but it takes up to 3 weeks until it's back to normal. And there is no medication for it. You can just wait. Until then I fell dizzy, my head is spinning and can't always hold my balance. It sometimes looks funny as if I would be drunk lol. I feel sea sick since two weeks now.
Did anyone else had this before?

Nicky,
my sister had the same problems years ago. Not nice at all, she said xhe felt as if she was drunk all the time...
You're really having problems with your health at the moment
I really hope that you'll feel better after these three weeks...
