George Clooney: Stars upset about Hollywood diversity have a point

Hollywood thought leader, Oscar-winner and Academy voter George Clooney says he's sympathetic to the simmering frustration about the lack of diversity in the Oscar nominations and in Hollywood in general.
In an interview with Variety, the Hollywood "statesman," as the industry daily put it, lamented that "we're moving in the wrong direction" on the status of African Americans in entertainment, on and off screen, and haven't even addressed the lack of opportunities for Hispanics.
"I think that African Americans have a real fair point that the industry isn’t representing them well enough," he said. "I think that’s absolutely true."

It wasn't this bad 10 years ago, he said.
"I think around 2004, certainly there were black nominees — like Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman. And all of a sudden, you feel like we’re moving in the wrong direction."
Clooney spoke up after — for the second year in a row — Oscar nominations for acting went to white stars only, setting off bitter tweets on Twitter (#Oscarssowhite) and vows to boycott this year's Feb. 28 ceremonies by Jada Pinkett Smith, Spike Lee and Michael Moore.

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs issued a statement Monday saying she, too, was “frustrated" about the lack of inclusion and promised "dramatic action."

Clooney did not indicate he plans to join the boycott. But he was on board with the exasperation. He said there were at least four films this year that were robbed of nominations.
"Creed could have gotten nominations; Concussion could have gotten Will Smith a nomination; Idris Elba could have been nominated for Beasts of No Nation; and Straight Outta Compton could have been nominated," he said. "And certainly last year, with Selma director Ava DuVernay — I think that it’s just ridiculous not to nominate her."

Idris Elba: Diversity dearth is cross-pond problem
Clooney also argued that it goes beyond just who's picked and who's not.
"I don’t think it’s a problem of who you’re picking as much as it is: How many options are available to minorities in film, particularly in quality films?," he said.
And the situation for Hispanics in Hollywood is even worse, he said.
"We need to get better at this. We used to be better at it."
And finally George Clooney said it perfectly! The lack of diversity isn't just about black performers [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Of course, Clooney, too, came in for some pointed criticism.
4) I'll be blunt: would you tell George Clooney, "Change yr own industry before lecturing us about the world"?

I love George, I really do, but I kind of wish he hadn't jumped into this discussion - even though I know there's no way he would want to stay out of it. The thing is, his track record of hiring minority actors for his films isn't so great. He really needs to step up his own game before he calls anyone else on the carpet.
As for boycotting the Oscars, well, that should be an individual choice. Asking Chris Rock to back out of the hosting gig is unfair. He'd be trashing his career and the people pressuring him to boycott know it. IMO Whoopi was right saying he could use the night as an opportunity to make the point that the Academy needs to step up.

I think George is right on with his views on the ethnic disparity with the Oscars. Good for him. Glad he spoke up. And if he does get criticized for not hiring minorities for his own films then he can answer for that. And I think he's willing to do that. He knows where he's at in this controversy.
This issue has been going on for a few years. I think it's time to step up the "conversation" and action.

Interesting to note that on most sites with this report, many are saying that they think the nominations were based on merit.

Re: george-clooney-stars-upset-hollywood-diversity-have-point
I had the same thought, Lizzy. Maybe the guy whose casts are typically white as the driven snow isn't the best person to comment on this particular issue. Heck, he just started making films with full-realized female characters like two years ago, so he should probably keep his nose out of this one. Maybe if more people focused on actually making casting and staffing decisions that would increase opportunities for artists of color rather than just expressing their disappointment when this happens every year, things would actually change.
I agree that Chris is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Sure, he'll probably take some hard shots at the Academy, but they'll just laugh, pat themselves on the back for taking the shots, and continue business as usual. Now if some of the nominees boycotted, that might at least make them stand up and take notice (will never happen). I'd love to see some major organizing among white and black artists (and Hispanic and Asian and everyone else) to make it impossible for the Academy to find presenters or performers for their broadcast. Kind of like the Entertainment Tonight boycott George led before. Hey, there's an idea if you want to get involved, George!

Donnamarie - Of course he's right and of course he'll defend himself if he has to. The thing is, he's not just an actor anymore. He's a writer and a producer - both positions which allow him to support minority actors and projects.
He said the problem is really that projects aren't getting made which would be more inclusive. Well, why isn't he making them? Why isn't Smokehouse producing them?
Maybe earlier in his career he couldn't really change anything, but now he's got the power to make a difference. He can do things he thinks would help and he can influence others to act. It really isn't enough to just pay lip service to the situation when he's in a position to do a lot more.

Lizzy you're right on your question of why isn't George and Smokehouse doing projects that are more inclusive of minorities. In front of and behind the camera.
George is pretty savvy and quite smart when it comes to Hollywood, the movie industry and the players in that industry. No one needs to tell him that by what he said today he must include himself in being part of solving this problem. I've always thought George a really genuine guy so I'm hoping he and his production company will be part of the solution he's advocating.

Oh, colour me sceptic here, but didn't we see the same thing a couple of years ago when he was up for oscar nominations and wanted more publicity and suddenly he was all over the whole 'not enough women in Hollywood' bandwagon, despite noticeably having (at that time) directed and produced films that were almost entirely always all male in the key roles?LizzyNY wrote:I love George, I really do, but I kind of wish he hadn't jumped into this discussion - even though I know there's no way he would want to stay out of it. Re: george-clooney-stars-upset-hollywood-diversity-have-point
In the Guardian article it says that George talked to 'Variety' about this issue. To me it would be important if he brought it up himself or if he was asked by a reporter of 'Variety'. They ask him about pretty everything including politics, and this is about his own 'playground' and business.
So if he was asked what he thinks about it, how should he have reacted? Say 'This is not my business' although it is? He always stands for the rights of minorities so of course he would speak for them. So 'No comment' wouldn't be the right answer as well because that could also mean that he doesn't agree with these complaints. Of course he could have said what he did and then added: 'But look, I feel guilty as well cause I fail at this.'
If I remember the last movies I saw there weren't many colored actors... If they would just say: As long as the color of skin doesn't have any meaning for the role we can as much have a colored or Hispanic. Just as having them for women as much as for men.
I try to remember: On Sunday I saw 'Peanuts - The Movie' with my kids, and I only remember one colored child in the movie. I mean, there were only kids, not just the usual gang but also other kids at school, school assembly and ice skating on the pond, and I only remember one colored child. I'm sure they could have put in much more...
It shouldn't be an issue but it is.
I saw an interview with a German actress the other day, and her parents are from Thailand. They came to Germany when she was just a small child, and she said that when she wanted to become an actress she was told that there wouldn't be any roles for her. And when she started acting she only got jobs as as a prostitute or a masseuse. And when she got more jobs in every movie it had to be explained why she speaks German with no accent. Now - after quite a while in the business she's just an actress.
We've got a host of a talk show with Ethiopian roots, and I remember when I saw him on TV for the first time and he spoke with a certain dialect which is spoken in Northern Germany I was confused because this seemed to be so weird, to have a colored person who speaks this dialect. But this lasted only one second.
When we registered our children at school we had an ice cream in town afterwords. It's about 15 miles away from our town, and they've got a well known university which is specialized in mining engineering. So many students come from Africa and Asia as much as South America. And my kids started to stare at the entrance of the university which was just across the road, and then I realized that they'd never seen a colored person before. At the school they'd been before there wasn't a foreign child with a different skin color at the whole school!
But this didn't last very long, now it's just normal. And that's how it should be.
I think we need to stop stereotyped thinking. And it helps when you see minorities (can't think of a better word) on TV and in movies because then you see them as a matter of course.

George Clooney on White Oscars: ‘We’re Moving in the Wrong Direction’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Film Editor, New York @RaminSetoodeh
Last week, for the second consecutive year, the Oscars nominated 20 white actors as the best performances of the year, a decision that generated widespread controversy. Twitter erupted in a “Oscars so White” hashtag, and the New York Times asked if the Oscars were “so dumb.” Over the weekend, Spike Lee announced plans to boycott the ceremony, and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs issued a statement saying she was “frustrated about the lack of inclusion.” Variety asked Hollywood statesman George Clooney for his thoughts about what the industry needs to do.
George Clooney: If you think back 10 years ago, the Academy was doing a better job. Think about how many more African Americans were nominated. I would also make the argument, I don’t think it’s a problem of who you’re picking as much as it is: How many options are available to minorities in film, particularly in quality films?
I think we have a lot of points we need to come to terms with. I find it amazing that we’re an industry that in the 1930s, most of our leads were women. And now a woman over 40 has a very difficult time being a lead in a movie. We’re seeing some movement. Jennifer Lawrence and Patricia Arquette have made the loud pronouncement about wage disparity, have put a stamp on the idea that we got to pay attention. But we should have been paying attention long before this. I think that African Americans have a real fair point that the industry isn’t representing them well enough. I think that’s absolutely true.
Let’s look back at some of the nominees. I think around 2004, certainly there were black nominees — like Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman. And all of a sudden, you feel like we’re moving in the wrong direction. There were nominations left off the table. There were four films this year: “Creed” could have gotten nominations; “Concussion” could have gotten Will Smith a nomination; Idris Elba could have been nominated for “Beasts of No Nation;” and “Straight Outta Compton” could have been nominated. And certainly last year, with “Selma” director Ava DuVernay — I think that it’s just ridiculous not to nominate her.
But honestly, there should be more opportunity than that. There should be 20 or 30 or 40 films of the quality that people would consider for the Oscars. By the way, we’re talking about African Americans. For Hispanics, it’s even worse. We need to get better at this. We used to be better at it.

I go back and forth on this: in the ongoing conversations and controversies about #OscarsSoWhite, is it a good thing or a bad thing that white celebrity allies are entering the conversation? I think it’s a mixed bag. It’s good to know that white allies will publicly stand up for diversity, but it also feels like the media treats the issue differently – as in, with more respect – once white celebrities chime in. It’s a conversation that’s been centered around Chris Rock, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Spike Lee, David Oyelowo and other black artists, and is that the way it should be? Should the conversation be insular, within communities of color? Or should it be a larger conversation amongst artists of color and white artists?
I ask these questions because George Clooney has just entered the conversation, like the proverbial white knight. To be fair to Clooney, Variety makes it clear that they approached him for his take on the situation, and they’re the ones calling him a “Hollywood statesman.” Here’s his statement about #OscarsSoWhite:[From Variety]“If you think back 10 years ago, the Academy was doing a better job. Think about how many more African Americans were nominated. I would also make the argument, I don’t think it’s a problem of who you’re picking as much as it is: How many options are available to minorities in film, particularly in quality films?

And now a woman over 40 has a very difficult time being a lead in a movie. We’re seeing some movement. Jennifer Lawrence and Patricia Arquette have made the loud pronouncement about wage disparity, have put a stamp on the idea that we got to pay attention. But we should have been paying attention long before this. I think that African Americans have a real fair point that the industry isn’t representing them well enough. I think that’s absolutely true.

I was looking through the list of black Oscar winners and nominees throughout the history of the Oscars, and I think an argument can be made that there is an ebb and flow with diversity being recognized and rewarded. That argument was made last year by none other than Spike Lee as well, that some years are just more diverse, and that some years it feels like every nominee is white. But two years in a row with potentially great and worthy options for diverse nominees getting snubbed, it does feel like the Academy is going backwards.
I also have to give Clooney some credit for not pretending to be the white savior. He doesn’t have the answers and he’s not pretending he has the answers. It’s good that he’s acknowledging the problem though.

Everything old is new again. JMO, but our guy does sometimes jump on the band wagon......these 2 topics, letter writing and press conference to read aloud to the world how the press was to blame for Princess Diana's death. There was a NY paper ( Post or Daily Mail-- help me out New Yorkers) right after the press conference that basically told George to shut up. Anyone else remember this??Katiedot wrote:Oh, colour me sceptic here, but didn't we see the same thing a couple of years ago when he was up for oscar nominations and wanted more publicity and suddenly he was all over the whole 'not enough women in Hollywood' bandwagon, despite noticeably having (at that time) directed and produced films that were almost entirely always all male in the key roles?LizzyNY wrote:I love George, I really do, but I kind of wish he hadn't jumped into this discussion - even though I know there's no way he would want to stay out of it. During ER days- TV Guide did an interview with everyone on the cast.. Eric's interview was going to be published during a holiday week, when basically tv guide sales would be down. George had to make a statement about it. Or how about his request for all celebrities to boycott Paramount because HardCopy ran photos of him and Celine that he felt were intrusive ( it was them walking around the Batman set cuddling). He brought it up during a Larry King interview with him and Nicole Kidman while promoting Peacemaker. The look on Nicole's face was priceless.
Point of the rant- I sometimes feel George makes public statements, so he appears to be relevent to the times, he's a newpaper man's son, he's defending the little guy.

He does jump on these topics, and to be fair to him, I think he's genuinely passionate about these topics. One of the reasons I've been a fan for so many years is that he's not a man without an opinion! The thing that annoys me is that in recent years, I think he's become more vocal about issues when he's needing publicity for a film or a nomination. Perhaps that's just my perception.PigPen wrote: JMO, but our guy does sometimes jump on the band wagon. I'm sure Variety contacted him because he is the 'issues go to guy' but I'd also guess they come to him for a quote on many issues. Not sure that he always gives them a response unless it suits him. Again, just my perception.

Re: george-clooney-stars-upset-hollywood-diversity-have-point
I think George is passionate about certain issues for sure. And it sounds like Variety did contact him. And this issue does suit him. It would have been awkward not to respond and knowing George as we do he does have strong feelings about this.
He should know all too well that his statements could backfire on him because he has not himself been part of the change so far. I hope he will follow up in some way soon to show that he is making an effort through Smokehouse Productions.
I agree with most of what you said Katiedot except for the comment of him needing publicity. Maybe I'm in the minority here. I just don't think he would "use" this issue to get PR for his new movie(s) coming out. He gets all the PR he needs without having to work for it IMO.

That's a wrong impression I guess. He did protest and get himself arrested, or advocate the industry not to be afraid of Sony hacking and blame the media's wrong direction in coverage about both Sony hacking and Amal's religion, or defend himself and his relationship with the President Obama over that fight on dinner, or criticize another banker's wrong blames on Sony's investments in 2013...those all happened at times when he had no films to sell. George doesn't back from stating his opinions on controversies or setting the facts straight. I think he truely cares about those issues when he speaks that out loud. He won't only choose publicity times to make statements.

And I really feel this debate, compared to other foreign country issues, relates so closely to him as an Academy voter himself that he couldn't stay in silence anyway.

Re: george-clooney-stars-upset-hollywood-diversity-have-point
I believe Variety approached him for the interview. His career has put him in a position where he knows a lot about many facets of the industry so he's a logical choice to ask - and whatever he said would get a lot of press - for the Academy as well as for him. I do think there are times when he uses this kind of situation to gain interest for one of his projects, but I think this time it's just coincidence.
I also think he enjoys being asked his opinion on all industry-related issues, as well as his other causes. I'm not sure he would have chimed in on this one if he hadn't been asked (because of his own record on the matter) but I'm also sure that he was totally sincere. I'm interested to see if he acts on it.
I'm curious to see whether any of this will change anything. I also wonder if more people will watch the awards now just to see what Chris Rock will do.
By the way, is there any reason or George to be at the Academy Awards this year?

The thing is, his track record of hiring minority actors for his films isn't so great. He really needs to step up his own game before he calls anyone else on the carpet.
As for boycotting the Oscars, well, that should be an individual choice. Asking Chris Rock to back out of the hosting gig is unfair. He'd be trashing his career and the people pressuring him to boycott know it. IMO Whoopi was right saying he could use the night as an opportunity to make the point that the Academy needs to step up.
I agree on what you said. And I really wonder if in future if he does more movies with great roles for black people.
Katiedot wrote:He does jump on these topics, and to be fair to him, I think he's genuinely passionate about these topics. One of the reasons I've been a fan for so many years is that he's not a man without an opinion! The thing that annoys me is that in recent years, I think he's become more vocal about issues when he's needing publicity for a film or a nomination. Perhaps that's just my perception.PigPen wrote:JMO, but our guy does sometimes jump on the band wagon. I'm sure Variety contacted him because he is the 'issues go to guy' but I'd also guess they come to him for a quote on many issues. Not sure that he always gives them a response unless it suits him. Again, just my perception.
mmh not sure if this is the case as it is now Oscar season and I guess the right moment to talk about it.
But I think what I really like to see more is, when George for example is nominated for an Oscar and THEN he speaks out like this and then it would be interesting to see if he goes or not and if he goes what he will do. That would be more effective. But I'm sure if George goes to the Oscars again one day we will not speak about black people again probably more about his wife and the dress. He should go to the Oscars this year walk the red carpet and spread the word now. You know what I mean or do I explain myself stupid ?

My issue is with Jada and Spike , they both have axes to grind with the Oscars. Spikes film didn't get nominated and Will didn't get nominated although there was talk he would be nominated.

Nicky, you explain yourself very well! And you're right. If he's at the Oscars this year they'll probably ask him about this, but I don't think it will last. After the show is over I'm afraid things will go back to business as usual.

I still think it was good for George to stand up for changes in the movie industry's shortcomings in diversity. And it has been pointed out by more than one media outlet that George himself is not practicing what he's preaching. But I think he's fully aware of that and he did use the word "we" pretty much throughout his statement to drive home the point that the industry needs to do a better job. He includes himself.

Does anybody know how the process of voting for the Oscars works?
I mean, they say that there are more than 6,000 members of the Academy. Do they get a list of - for example - five or maybe ten actors and can choose between them? Or can they enlist the name of their favorite actor? Because the list would mean that there's a pre-selection with much more chances to take influence, the alternative would mean without a predetermined conclusion...

In my view there is no way George would choose to go to the Oscars unless he was nominated for something. I could be wrong but I don't think it's something he enjoys.
It would be interesting to see how he voted.........
Here's Michael Caine telling everybody to calm down, and how it took him years to get an Oscar and explaining that you can't vote for an actor just because he's black
He's also says the up side of not being nominated is that you don't have to go and sit there for hours!

Well, I don't think you can blame him for "Hail Caesar" as, as far as I know, he is just acting in it and does not have any decision making role other than accepting the part in the first place. When he is the producer and director and therefore calling the shots? Yes he is a bit of a hypocrite as far as roles for women and minorities. Do I think this exclusion is intentional? No. He makes the stories that appeal to him and you can't really blame him for that. Those making decisions need to think more inclusively when choosing project, casting and hiring for behind the scenes. And that doesn't mean taking a male role and changing to female with a minor rewrite. It also doesn't mean considering black performers for only "black" content like civil rights topics, or women only in the roles of wives/girlfriends/moms, or asians as martial artists (Oceans series comes to mind). If only a small number of roles exist, it's hard to get nominations.melbert wrote:3, 2, 1...

Is it possible that there were no really great films or actors this year?
How do they know these members even watched all the films.
Also how do they know who actually did the voting?
Denzel admitted a couple of years ago he let his wife choose.

I believe the same complaint has been made for years, not just this year. My understanding is that they have no way of knowing if all of the films were watched or how an individual's vote was cast/influenced.annemarie wrote:Is it possible that there were no really great films or actors this year?

This issue of awards is the tail wagging the dog IMO. The real issue is lack of opportunities to even make films likely to be nominated.

thanks for the explanation. This procedere means that it takes quite some time before they actually know the results of the voting. It's seems okay now with using the internet (I remember having read recently that the members now vote via internet) but how did they handle it before when they had to use mail? I mean, to write a letter to every member of the academy, to wait for their return letter, evaluate them, make a short list, send them to the members again and wait for the answer, evaluate them...
And even if there were less members at that time - sometimes filmmakers work in other countries. I guess they could just hope for no strike at the post...

Re: george-clooney-stars-upset-hollywood-diversity-have-point
There's a great explanation of how Academy Awards nominations are made on Mentalfloss.com (It's too long to post, and besides I don't know how ).
Basically a ballot is sent out to all members in December. They are asked to list 5 nominees in their category (actors nominate actors, directors nominate directors, etc.). There is no restriction on who they can nominate, but there are all kinds of rules about eligibility. If someone doesn't meet those guidelines they're eliminated. The same is true for someone submitting work for consideration. If they don't meet the requirements they can't be considered.
After these ballots are returned (sometime in January) the accounting firm uses a mathematical formula to decide which choices from the ballots will become the official nominations. Once that's done, the final voting is done where all voting members vote in all categories - not just their own.
I hope this helps. The actual article makes it really clear.

Thanks Lizzy. I'll also check out Mentalfloss. What a funny name.
Im a bit taken aback by Micahel Caine's comments. Don't worry. Be patient. It took him years to get an Oscar. And it's good if you do get snubbed because then you don't have to go and have to clap for Leonardo DiCaprio? He says himself that Idris Elba gave a "wonderful" performance in Beast of No Nation. But the voting can't be a "box ticking exercise" just to vote for a black without regard to the quality of the performance. Think he may have contradicted himself.
Obviously there were performances and films with African Americans that could have been included but for whatever reason they didn't get enough votes. The fact that the members of the Academy are mostly older white men may be the reason but I really don't know. Sounds like the Academy needs an infusion of new and younger blood anyway. And I agree it can't just be about the "ticking the box" -- inclusion just for the sake of the numbers.
fava, I agree. It has to start at the onset of a project. Screenwriters, producers and directors, including George need to be more conscientious about hiring actors and other artistic and technical people who are more representative. Studios need to get over playing it safe and making only movies that cash in at the box office. In a way that's the biggest problem. It's all about the bottom line for the studio. I see the box office numbers for so many small films. They don't bring in that much money. And they can't compete with the likes of Jurassic World and Star Wars but they are really well made and thoughtful films. How hard is it to get those films made? George has talked about this before. If a big name star attaches his or her name to a small project it has a better chance of getting financial backing.
I do think this is a problem for Hollywood and not much to do about nothing. How will Chris Rock handle this? How many artists will stand up and speak out about this issue as they are walking the red carpet or accepting their awards.

I think that you can't have a quote for African American actors. Then you'll need another one for Hispanics (is that pc?) and one for Native Americans...
And how should it be quoted? On the proportion of residents? The proportion of actors who are members of the SAG? And what about actors from other countries? Think about all the British actors who have won. Or Jean Dujardin. Should they also have a quote for actors from other countries?
And if not, why not?
If there were more actors with other 'ethnic background' in the movies (and not just chosen because they do a movie about slavery) it would - hopefully - be a quote just as a natural progression. If you would put up an ethnic quote on the movies you would also have to be careful for not thinking stereotyped. It just should be as natural to have an African American to be James Bond, Selma Hayek to play the American president or an Asian actor for Luke Skywalker.

Charlotte Rampling who is nominated for an Oscar has stated that the plans to boycott the oscars are misguided. She also said that calls to get more minority nominees were anti-white racism. Rampling said that maybe black actors don't deserve to be on the final stretch.
So here we have another opinion on the matter.

annemarie I read those comments by Charlotte Rampling. I thought her comments were even more off-putting than Caine's.
It would be nice to hear what Way2 would have to say about all of this. She understands the way the industry works in a way that many of us aren't clued into.

Re: george-clooney-stars-upset-hollywood-diversity-have-point
I'm very confused by some of the things I'm reading. This issue definitely has racial overtones, but I'm beginning to think it is more generational. It's more that a lot of academy members either don't understand - or don't even see - a lot of modern cinema. If they aren't going to see the movies, they can't nominate them.
It appears the Academy is moving to change this by limiting membership to 10 year increments. If you don't work for ten years, you can't vote. I don't know if the changes they're making have to be voted on by the whole membership, but if they do it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
