It Pays To Be George Clooney's Wife: Amal Reportedly Raises Hourly Rates At Law Firm As Demand Spikes Like Wildfire

Without a doubt, it pays to be married to George Clooney. Just ask Amal Clooney (formerly Alamuddin). According to a Sun report, the internationally celebrated human rights lawyer is in high demand. As such, Amal charges a hefty hourly rate for consultation services.

George Clooney's wife is raking in the dough, for sure. Ever since Amal, 37, emerged as the silver fox's steady romance, her rates have risen. Today, if you want to chat with Mrs. Clooney about a legal matter at Doughty Street Chambers in London, it will set you back £500 an hour or $742.00 an hour.

Among her clients is the embattled Wikileaks founder and editor-in-chief, Julian Assange, who remains housed at the Embassy of Ecuador in London under political asylum.

Although the hourly rate Amal reportedly charges appears high, she is not taking full advantage of her star appeal as the better half of the Gravity actor. A retired attorney, who wishes to remain anonymous, described Amal Clooney as a "rising star" among law professionals.

"That does seem to be a high fee. That works out as £4,000 a day [$5935.00]. There are no set rates, but usually, barristers will charge around £200 to £300 an hour $297.00 to $445.00]. The very best people can charge more."
Amal and George Clooney wed in September of last year, and since then, they've been on a tear in their respective careers. But despite what the headline suggests, remember how the old saying goes: "Behind every great man, there's a great woman."

Hang on a minute......what's the going rate for a leading barrister anyway? Does it include the VAT? And is it dependent on negotiation depending upon the case?

I don't believe there is such a thing as a 'normal' rate anyway.

I employed an Inner Tenple lawyer a couple of years ago for nothing as important or complicated as any of Amal's cases (it was a possible, and small, house purchase, and the bill was in the thousands (£).

And let's not forget many of her cases are either pro bono or charging very little. In the case of Mohammed Fahmy she charged 5% of her normal fee, and that including lobbying the likes of David Cameron, Steve Harper and John Kerry.......

If this turns out to be true, then I suspect it's being used as a deterrent for time wasters, because I think the fees in most cases are negotiable, and if it's not, Gossip Cop will be issuing a denial before long

They do not say how much she charged before so there is no way of knowing how much of a raise has taken place. The retired attorney also said she is not taking full advantage of what she could ask for.  I think she charges on a case bases those that can pay do and those that can't she cuts her fee or waves it.

This story was originally published by The Sun.  What's their reputation?   Where did they get their info?  As usual an anonymous source was used to legitimize the story. We don't know if the figures quoted are true.

And I would agree that her fees probably vary depending on her clients.  Amal has worked on some high profile cases (even before George)  and can probably charge a high hourly fee.  Not too many lawyers charge on the cheap.

To me that sounds to be one of those tabloid stories that are just made up.
How much did she charge before she was married to George? / Did her amount increase after she married him?
How much is the amount for a barrister with her specific qualification? Is there an average amount for human rights barristers?
Does this amount include VAT?
Does she really charge this amount regularly? She also works pro bono so her other cases pay for that as well.

So for me the question is what's the intention for this article. To me it sounds as if they try to impeach Amal's credibility. So the usual crap...

Amal is working the Nasheed case pro bono and Geoffrey Robertson said in a Huffington Post article that she works low profile and pro bono cases.

How much she gets paid and which cases are free are her business. I'm sure her clients expect privacy and that is how it should be it is no ones business other than Amals.

I am so very sorry Annemarie.  You are very right.  Amal's business should not even be in the news feeds.  Someone should tell her PR that I guess.

The media makes Amal their business.  They are still intrigued by her.  Whatever public info they can find out about her cases they will seek it out and report it.  And obviously some of these outlets have an agenda to present her in a certain light since she is George's wife.  I personally don't believe she has any PR team working to put her in the news.  Other than what Doughty Chambers provides.

There have been important wide-reaching cases like  Fahmy and Nasheed in which Doughty Street and Amal have wanted to bring international attention to because of the international impact on human rights.

That hourly rate is not out of line with what expert lawyers charge.  That is not what she makes--she must have overhead for staff, office space, etc.

Doesn't she work for a law firm?  As such, I believe the firm dictates her basic fees.  In the US, lawyers working for a law firm, submit their hours billed to the firm, and they are paid by that firm at whatever rate their contract dictates.  If her "rates" have increased, how much if that increase is she receiving and how much goes into the firm's accounts?

It would seem that she works hard, whether in London, or abroad.  She's been criticized often about her time spent with George and not "working" but with computers and cellphones at hand wherever you are, she can definitely find time to work "at home".  I'm sure that George, wherever he is, spends a good deal of his "at home" time working.  He's got a lot of irons in the fire at all times.  I'll go now - had to finally put my two cents in - too much criticism again.  MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS 2016.

So, did Doughty Street Chambers make the announcement, the same way they "announced" the engagement?  Personally I don't care how much she makes, how she makes it or when.  I do however find it odd how  information such as this finds it's way to the press ( see above re: engagement) and then people complain that G &A are victims of lost privacy.  Just my opinion, kiddos.

There was no announcement just an article from the sun which is a gossip paper. As for who talked that could be any one who works at the law firm.

To me it is not odd it got out people can get paid for spilling what they know or in some cases make up , let's be real the papers are not checking their information to see if it is true or not.

Very well said Pattygirl.

Amal is a barrister, so a little different from the States in that she doesn't work for the firm, but has joined a chambers where she has been offered a place and where she'll have an office and staff and be part of a team (or not as in the case of her being part of Ben Emmerson's team - he works for Matrix Chambers - on a number of briefs appointed by the British Government or the UN)

How about we call this story journalistic creative writing?  Why are we giving this story any credibility at all?  How do we know that The Sun got their "facts" right?  There is no evidence from this article that Doughty Street made any announcement or volunteered this info to the press.  This is one gossip tabloid with an angle.  And even if The Sun did find out how much she bills a client so what?   What's the point?  None of us are privy to her workload and all of her clients and how she charges each and every one of them.  Which ones are pro bono or charged at a reduced rate.  Or at her "usual" hourly rate.

Amal is an accomplished attorney.  She's not cheap but neither would any other lawyer be handling some of her high profile cases.

Donna,
very well said. Thank you! We need to put it all into the right perspective. And a barrister of Amal's specific qualification can't be compared with a small town lawyer who mostly deals with divorces  and house purchases - neither can Doughty Street Chambers be compared with a one man law firm...

These tabloids also said these things during the times his GFs were with him. Going on about how their lives improved because of being his GF.

Its sounds like more of that, to me. Mentioning money made, so the importance of being his GF or in this case, a wife, gets attention, and makes the gals and her, look extra smart, as in, they are taking advantage of the opportunities that come with the relationship.

And perhaps its more about countering all the bad stuff that makes it look like the fame game ruins things for them.  Maybe PR mending of a fence.

But if not, we know its happened many times before. Mags may be making it up, or following a certain direction of thinking, that they all seem to have.

As his wife, her odds of making more money are pretty sky high. I think thats just a given. And Mags prolly know that, even if they couldn't prove anything.  And her job happens to be pretty important in the humanitarian field.

The more she makes, the more influence it gives her for more clients. Because that will also go to impress some of those in the higher class of problems, like war criminals, and give her that IN DEMAND appearance.

And also allow her to work for more Pro Bono cases as she can easily cover them. Thats prolly of more importance than it might first appear. Some of those Pro Bono cases seem like they would be pretty expensive to do, as she prolly sometimes has to have a tight and very good security for some.

But I could be wrong of course. maybe somebody has to cover her security, no matter what. I know I'd want to make sure I had the best in some of those cases. And the firm might not be able to get the best, at times.

But hey, its only opinion. Nothing factual here... just musings... I like everyone else here, have a few... Have a great Holiday and hope you all had good Christmases... Drink 3 santa Drink 2

Apparently it's different in the UK: she doesn't work for a law firm.  The chambers she 'works for' is more of an association of lawyers.
