George Clooney agrees to tone down his 'unsightly and intrusive' CCTV cameras outside his £10m Oxfordshire mansion to keep the neighbours happy

  • Residents complained about the cameras' white protective covers
  • The actor has changed them to a dark green to blend with the countryside
  • There are eight cameras around the property and ten on the house
  • He bought it with wife Amal after their wedding in 2014

George Clooney has agreed to change the colours of the CCTV system of his Oxfordshire mansion to appease his new neighbours.
Residents of Sonning complained after he planted a screen of cameras on and around the £10 million Mill House, calling the installation 'unsightly and intrusive'.
Clooney, 54, who bought the property with his wife Amal, 37, in October 2014 after tying the knot in Venice, has now agreed to change the colour of the cameras' protective covers, South Oxfordshire district council said.
He won planning permission in August 2015 to erect up to eight cameras on 18-foot wooden poles in the grounds, and a further ten fixed to the house itself.

George Clooney has agreed to change the colours of the protective covers of the security cameras installed on his Oxfordshire property in Sonning

The actor bought the house with his wife, Amal Alamuddin, in October 2014, after they got married in Venice. The couple are now carrying major extension work on the property's annexe

The Clooney's mansion has a a gym, a steam room, a library, a study, a family room, a formal dining room and a cellar. The development of the annex will add a 12-seat cinema for private screenings, a new pool house, a pergola and a hot tub
But neighbours complained about the white hoods on the black cameras, three of which overlook the river.
The actor has had them changed to dark green to blend in with the countryside.
South Oxfordshire district councillor Paul Harrison said concerns were raised by David Woodward, chairman of Eye and Dunsden Parish Council, and he had received complaints from three residents.
He said: 'The camera itself is a black unit but there was white protective housing on the top of it, which prompted concerns.
'David Woodward contacted me about that, and I went and had a look and found it was unsightly.
'It was quite bright, a brilliant white. I thought it was out of character and would destroy the visual aspect.'
He raised the issue with planning officer Emma Bowerman, who wrote to the actor's agent.

Councillor Harrison said: 'From our point of view it's very good that the applicant, or the agents, have listened to the views of residents and addressed the problem.'
The couple installed CCTV to act as surveillance in case burglars or stalkers try to intrude.
Eye and Dunsden Parish Council previously objected, claiming that the wide range of cameras would represent a ‘potential infringement of the privacy of neighbouring properties’.
The luxurious Thames riverside home has cameras encased in protective vandal-resistant domes, which can be tilted or panned to face any direction around the house.
The council said the poles would be a 'visual intrusion' into the village's conservation area, adding: 'A more appropriate security system could be achieved by a greater number of inward-facing low-level cameras.'
The Clooneys got permission to install the current cameras after their planning agent, Paul Butt, submitted an amended application, which planned to reduce the height of the two tallest CCTV support posts.
South Oxfordshire council planning officers rubber-stamped the amended plans, ruling that they 'would not be detrimental to the special architectural and historic interest of the listed building or its setting'.

The nine-bedroom house, a Grade II listed building, is located on a four-acre patch of land that straddles the border between Berkshire and Oxfordshire

The Clooneys have until August 2018 to complete work on their property according to the council's decision notice, which says it has to be carried out within three years of the date of consent
The house is a Grade II listed building, meaning it is a particularly important construction of more than special interest.
Senior planning officer Paul Lucas said the cameras would not be detrimental to the character and appearance of the site or the surrounding conservation area nor would they be 'unneighbourly'.
The council's decision notice says the work must be carried out within three years of the date of consent, which is by August 2018.
The nine-bedroom building sits on a four-acre stretch of land straddling the border between Berkshire and Oxfordshire in the picturesque quietude of the River Thames.
Extensive renovation work is currently taking place on the hideaway, where scaffolding has been erected while builders fix the roof.

The couple, who were granted permission to set up eight cameras on 18-foot wooden poles on the property and ten on the house itself, have been seen at the village pub, The Bull Inn, and at the neighbouring Mill at Sonning riverside theatre
While they cannot extend the listed manor house, the couple were recently granted planning permission to do major extension work to the neighbouring annexe, which currently houses a boathouse and a greenhouse.
The stunning property has a gym, a steam room, a library, a study, a family room, a formal dining room and a cellar.
The annexe development will add a state-of-the-art 12-seat cinema for private home screenings to part of the greenhouse.
A new pool house, a pergola and a hot tub will be built on to the back of the existing riverside boathouse next to an 18m swimming pool.
New boundary fencing is being added around the riverside estate and new solid gates fitted for added privacy and security.
The Clooneys moved out over Christmas 2014 while repairs were done to the listed property and they awaited the decisions on their planning applications.
They have been spotted dining at the village pub, The Bull Inn, and taking in a show at the neighbouring Mill at Sonning riverside theatre.

Seems a bit fussy on the part of some of the residents in my opinion.  The cameras are on their property and they don't look that obtrusive to me at all.  Saw the pic that PAN had posted on another thread.  What a fuss.  But of course our George isn't going to give them a hard time.  He doesn't want to cause more commotion than he already has by the extensive renovation.

It seems to me that if the DM can get pictures like the ones in this article, then there isn't all that much privacy on the property. Solid fences and cameras might offer some protection at ground level but they are really exposed from above. I don't think any of his other homes offer such an open view of the property.

Post by NotAvailable Tue 05 Jan 2016, 08:29

Ooh. You're right Mel. UGH. Its not an attractive place to me anyway. I have never liked the all brick situation and that ugly roofing too. Guess I like more imagination in the look of a place. Well, with that kind of money anyway.  But I understand that they can't change the building much.

The fact of its private location may be why it was chosen. Island like and surrounded by river, right? Looks that way to me. For the life of me, I seem to feel a lack of interest in seeing its insides, if the outside is an indication.

Just me tho. Looks very boring to me. But oh well. It seems to be what they want. He seems to be bowing down to her so he must be foot tucked in mouth, head over heels kind of dumbness, who would do almost anything for her...

Maybe it expresses her tastes more than his tho. But whatever, I have a feeling there will be new photos soon of them inside it, doing some swanky thing party with the world's elite, hobnobbing much.

Thats what this "grand" little estate seems to be promoting, as far as I can see... The river looks more interesting to me. But I am a backwoods woman, who likes to fish some, and it looks like it would hold a few. Hope they would be safe to eat tho.

Maybe I should move back to the country. City life has its conveniences, but it lacks imagination and creativity. Doesn't really encourage that much. Not the type to go running to balls, museums of fancy trot things, and spend spend spend in stores until you're loaded down with more nice garbage to sell off in a garage sale...lol(well, over the years)

Their little spot is a country scene in the middle of a big city, even it the area is a small town like quality. That big city is not all that far from them.

In the country where I was raised, the nearest city is really a small town like city. Called a city. Locals still say howdy, or sometimes, just hello or hi. with a drawl.

But it has one huge disfavor about it. Not much commerce. Hardly any jobs. One would have to travel almost a 100 miles to get one. Housing is also more like, what did you say you put it together with?(one guy made his house with fit together joints) Can you imagine what happens to that wood as it weatherizes and swells, then shrinks? OOPSY, I think. Might come right apart some day, if those joints bust out of their seams from damp time swelling...

Hope not tho. Poor man. He lives alone, and can continue to. It would be very tough on a family to have to up and move when he has spent most of what he had, on it.

But back to the conversation... Not liking the look of it all that much. I'd be wanting to move away...to LA again. Sunny, warmer in the winter, only the cooling bill will be the biggest, water conservation, but if one plans carefully, have just enough, near the blissful ocean and beaches(I only like the sun on the beaches for a little while as it makes me sleepy) and lots more to do there.

Look at that place. Nowhere to garden or do your own little thing like that... too stuffy looking. Too rigid looking. And mention those grumpy neighbors. Who would want to try to befriend a prickly hedgehog? They sound about as inviting as a nest of angry wasps.

Just me I guess. I can take the grumps or leave em. Give me some freedom in my own spot or they can keep away. Bet the council would object if George was the type to ask if he could have a chicken house, a few farm pets and garden to feed his pets from.  As if his highness would come back down to earth tho... Shes changed him, I feel.

Think hes wasted a lot of his savings on her whims... Hope he remembers to do the hide the money trick, from himself, so he can't waste it. Put it into a trust where he can't touch it, until a certain time passes. Prolly no tho.

Oh well...I sort of hate to watch what may happen next... if she does divorce him, prolly will grab as much as she can, before doing it. Things he won't remember until he goes over an inventory list, later on...the house too prolly.

But let me stop gabbing now...maybe my "friend" has changed his mind by now and decided to come back home...where he belongs, if hes a lick of sense. Drives me bananas...(thinks he looks like George...hahahahaha) Poocher gut and balding top...don't think so...rounded eyebrows, thin lower lip...good kisser but but runs out right after the hoho moment, to clean up for a night out or business meeting.

Tho hes not an exec or anything. Business can be anything where you make a deal or a sale. His Dad's shop...

OK, back to topic. I hope this situation works out well for George. But I get the feeling that he may have bitten off a bit more than he really wanted. She seems like a big spender, a rub the elbows with royalty ladder climber, no matter how they want to sell the career ladder...hope it works out for him... shes getting all that she wants.

Just me little opinion and I know, I'm prolly alone in this one. I just don't really care for that house. It feels like, not George maybe. HER...
And its just how I see it...so don't get upset because of how I feel.

Arguing about it wouldn't change how I feel about it. Because feelings come from lots of things, rather than just a few conversations or stupid mags and their panty-twisting million dollar lies about celebrities... scratch Noooo!

You have a right to how you feel , All George's home are big and grand. that is how he likes them. The house in Los Angeles is not small sits on a couple of acres and has many bedrooms as do the other homes. He has a lot of friends and family and enjoys having them come and stay with him. As for him bowing down to Amal no , he loves his wife and I think they chose their home together which most couples do. Close enough to London but with a country feeling for them with peace and quiet and privacy.

So the council missed the covers and George went back and changed them, nit picking at it's finest it would seem.

George would do what is right to not cause a commotion.

Well, NotAvailable, this not a description of George that I recognise at all.

He comes from a small town by a river, where his parents have a house, possibly colonial, surrounded by trees.

His Hollywood house which is mock Tudor and is set on two acres of woodland was bought from money made from ER.

His Cabo home was designed by a highly respected architect from the finest available materials - and is and now covered in trees and foliage and next to water.

His home in Italy is 18th century, bought from Teresa Heinz-Kerry and includes five properties which have been restored, is surrounded by trees and land and is next to the water.

And now his home in Britain is 17th century (I think he said 1673), is a beautiful Georgian building which they have carefully and lengthily restored, and it too is surrounded by trees and woodland (10 acres) and is by water.

And if you watch the interview with Charlie Rose, this is what he prefers to invest in rather than stocks and shares.

He has also referred to LA, Como and London as home..........

Oh, and thanks so much, Mel, for all your techie skills.....

Yep George is a pretty traditional man in his style.  His home in Cabo is actually the exception.  His Como, LA and now Sonning homes are quite classic and conservative in style. He first became aware of the Sonning area of England when he was filming Monuments Men and was very attracted to it.  I have no reason to believe that George bought this home in Sonning except for the fact that he loved it.  And Amal loved it too.

It's a beautiful property IMO.  The "before renovation" pictures won me over.  I hope someday we get to see the renovated version.  Im sure George wanted the interior changes to reflect the historic integrity of the property.

George is his own man.  He has shown himself in that light for years and years. i don't think he would ever betray his core values and principles for anyone.

This security light issue is much to do about nothing IMO. Except for a few testy residents of Sonning.

re: the cameras.... read the article online, a comment from a reader made a good point- if the situation were reversed...someone moved into George's neighborhood and installed cameras that  may invade his privacy and had ugly (white covers , green covers, who cares what color), how would he react???

I know he's trying to keep the peace... but.

Risking going off topic ( and I'm sure Katie or Nicky will bitch slap me if I do)...  Not Available Today wrote if she does divorce him...never gonna happen kids.  Not after  that HUGE wedding, complete with an armada down the canal enroute to the wedding.  George would be a laughing stock.

I know this area very well as I'd written before because I've been there many times. And it's really beautiful and also a very wealthy area. Last summer when I visited our twin-town in Oxfordshire we were told that they are going to build new homes for 20,000 new residents (in a town of 25,000!). I couldn't believe it since in my area we're constantly losing inhabitants due to aging of the population and less jobs.

To me this house goes to the homes George owned before in L.A. and Como: traditional houses with a history.

His first house he bought and sold wasn't at all like any of these. Smaller and maybe more suited to a younger George. I saw a picture of it once. and was surprised. Think it was on Mulholland drive. May have been the one he had with his first wife. Not sure.

He does seemed to have gone a bit more to the impressive styles of the rich and famous. But its hard to put a lot of info into small messages. Its just my opinion. I really don't like that type of house, just me personally. But I don't have to live with it, thank goodness.

Guess I am not too easily impressed with grand or huge if its too "touch me not' like these old buildings can be. And they prolly would not like my ideas. I wouldn't choose half the crap I've seen on some well spent walls and draperies...

But I am not an expert either. Just know what I def wouldn't like, don't follow me around to see what I would tho... hehehehe it might be a bit wearing...

NotAvailable,
I've never seen a photo of his former house in L.A. but I remember that George once said in an interview that during his second season on ER he decided to move to a house which wasn't situated as close to the street. I guess that fans who had found out where he lived tried to get to his house, and I think it's quite understandable that he wanted to be a bit more 'out of reach'.
I also guess that before ER George was able to just jog in the streets or walk in the parks, go to a gym or go out to have a drink. When he got more and more attention this became more difficult for him because people followed him everywhere and didn't leave hom alone. So he had to find a way to avoid this by staying at home and just appearing in public when he wanted to and didn't mind being photographed or asked for autographs.

Of course this is just my suggestion but if you think about all the huge estates famous people have I might not be far from truth...

Well, I think that if I did exceptionally well in life, I could just about manage to put up with something that was a tad larger and more elegant - with an extra three wings, let's say, and beautiful gardens.

Wouldn't change the fact that I'd still be sitting on the floor cross legged with a bunch of books and newspapers strewn across the carpet. And not above flicking a crumb of a work surface a la George from time to time either.....

I think what people don't realize is George is a Taurus , he pretty much lives up to his sign. Taurus love beautiful things their surroundings must be attractive and comfortable.  Great food and wine are very important to them. He will spend money to have the luxuries he desires.
His homes are investments but also they are beautiful and he enjoys sharing them with family and friends.
Amal is very well taken care of and he will make sure she wants for nothing only the best will do for him and his wife.

Being a celebrity has made him much less public I think. He can't just go to dinner or walk down a beach without press and fans wanting pictures. His homes are where he can entertain and have privacy . The size of the homes has more to me to do with the amount of family and friends he and Amal have.

He can afford to change the camera covers to a less intrusive color.  He bought a historic property (with a lot of laws covering what can be done with it) and with neighbors.  He should change the covers.  Looks like that is what happened. I don't blame the neighbors for complaining.  They are losing some of their privacy too, which might be of concern to them as they are filmed every time they walk by one of the cameras at the edge of the property.

Totally off topic, but thanks PAN for finding that site. Give Flowers What an amazing collection of photos! I couldn't help scrolling down - and down - and down...
before I realized I was back to 2010! Very Happy It reminded me again how much he's aged in so short a time. He really did look much younger not that long ago. Hope it's genetic and not health related.

Lizzy
I also scrolled down for quite a while, what an amazing collection of photos!
I more realized how different George looked before and after his summer vacation. He looked so tired and plain on the photos of the 'Tomorrowland' premieres (which of course was stressful) compared to the ones taken after the summer...

It is a really nice collection of pictures.  I haven't scrolled through all of them yet but later.

There's one shot of the property today with a weeping type of tree hanging over the river.  Just lovely.  Even in the winter the area looks so lush.

I see what PAN and annemarie see in how George lives his home life.  I'm not a believer in astrology but good food, wine and being with the people he loves and admires are at the top of his "how I want to live my life" list.  In past interviews he has touched on the importance of these things in his life.

I don't think he cares that much about all the trappings of wealth. He obviously loves motorcycles and has probably spent a fair amount of money on this love. Clothes I don't think are that important to him.  Sure he has quite a collection of designer suits but generally he dresses down.  We've all weighed in with our 2 cent comments about that!

His acquisition of properties over the years has been incremental.  He didn't all of a sudden get rich and famous and buy all these homes.  Different reasons and circumstances have led to his purchase of each of his homes.  He likes to be comfortable.  Remember how his friends talked about his LA home reminded them of a frat house before Rande renovated it for him. I do think his homes are very important to him.  It's where he can truly be himself, relax and be with his family and friends.

Amal will want for nothing as far as he's concerned.  I certainly agree with that.

Yep, that sounds like the man we all know. It's the same in Italy too: whenever there was even the slightest hint of a rumble of a possible complaint, he'd change something. I'm sure that if he stood his ground, he'd 'win' against these complainers, but he never ever does. He must be an outstanding good neighbour (assuming you've got nothing against barbecues and skinny dipping).

Thanks a ton for posting these! This is pretty much the green I was expecting and don't think it's too bad. The white looked nicer, but the green does blend in more.

LizzyNY wrote:It seems to me that if the DM can get pictures like the ones in this article, then there isn't all that much privacy on the property.
I would guess that these are all on the outside of the property, so visible from the road. Or did you mean the aerial pictures? In which case yes, but with drones there's nowhere that's particularly private any more.

Don't take this the wrong way please, but that seems like such an odd thing to say. At what point did George state that none of this is his choosing and taste?

Donnamarie wrote:Yep George is a pretty traditional man in his style.  His home in Cabo is actually the exception.
Yes, I've wondered about that too: the style of that home is so different from what we've seen of his other homes.

Katie and Donna,
I just checked Cabo on wikipedia. If you look at the history of this place (it's actually quite a small village with about 1,000 inhabitants, I'd thought it's much bigger) people started to live there at the beginning of the 20th century, and at first there were only fishermen living there. So I presume there were just fishing huts for quite some time until it was discovered as a holiday destination. So if you don't want to live in a fake or false traditional house you may opt for a very modern house style as a contrast. And I guess that's what George and Rande decided. If you think about George's other houses I think that he would either have a 'real' historical house or a modern one.
I personally like all his houses (from what I saw in newspapers and interviews), I think that it's not easy to modernize a house and also keep the style of it. It requires a lot of experts (or a lot of a good taste and also knowledge) and money.

I thought the same annemarie.  And it being a beach house lends itself to contemporary design.

George Clooney agrees to tone down 'unsightly and intrusive' CCTV cameras outside his UK mansion Empty Re: George Clooney agrees to tone down 'unsightly and intrusive' CCTV cameras outside his UK mansion

I've been to Cabo myself. In the end of 2014. Just before New Years. The only place where there may be a 1000 ppl, might be the GATED community where he would have his house.

There are two parts of Cabo. The part in San Jose, and the southern part San Lucas.  Both have those places they call down town, poor places to live.  And both are teeming with regular ppl, I mean, less well off, who must work hard for their money.( You rarely ever hear Up town)

But I don't know how many villages may exist there as well, in the outskirts. When I passed the area where his resort was, saw much rebuilding being done to large places. It did look smaller than the city areas.

The population comes more to being nearer a million, if one actually took a head count. I saw so many ppl and getting lost was way too easy. I lost my camera so fast, on the first day...

But its a fun place to see. Have to watch out for scammers tho. Credit card companies won't honor many sales there because of the scams that are prevalent there. I kept trying to pay what I owed in my hotel fare, and had to put a call in to my card company.

Gals, the men there are looking for nice looking older ladies... Not sure if its to have a good time with them, or to find some way to rip them off, but I met several who seemed nice.

But one young fella laughed and said my callers like the cougars in women. I laughed too. Me NOT that type, hahahahaha...

Someone who maybe hasn't been to Cabo, must have put in that information. Think they would gasp, if they went to the downtown areas...

I wish I could have gotten some pics. Had to worry about paying for my hotel fare or I would have risked more to get another nice camera. I wanted those pics....

Take plenty of cash with you. Only way to get it done there. Not many places even have a regular card swiping unit. My hotel finally did get one and I breathed a sigh of relief. My card company still gave me grief tho. Took them a while to straighten it out and pay the hotel.

I was trying to save a little money as my cards were not working as intended. Only had 2 that worked and they already were well used. I got a cheaper hotel but nice family run one. Had walks every day with these men who wanted to show me around Cabo. Each one had a dif view and story to tell. All fun and interesting.

And I wouldn't have done that, unless I could tell by things, that they were OK. I'm a cautious lady. You can tell by how their friends we met along the way, greeted them.

Of course one was more serious than the rest. But i reckon it would be a risk to bring him to Ohio. Cold place by comparison and hes too generous for the type of most here.  They be rolling him before he knew it. He had a job that he could travel a lot with. But I could tell, he liked it there and I think he wanted me to stay there with him. I couldn't do that. Have too many responsibilities here.

OK getting back to topic.
George hasn't said anything really, all that much about the house. Of course, he will be changing his tastes, to more fit hers. As for the foot in mouth, it was just a funny image that popped into my head... Some men do actually imitate that a BIT... bow done to her, see the way he bowed over her hand? Sandies too? lol it was really a bit of humor and my sense of how things there.

Nothing to take wrong. We all have opinions and mine comes with a large does of humor. Hes a lion hearted one, and prolly has to bite down on something on occasion... to keep all things calm and cool...while the lady of the manor entertains her guests at times... the pic with the prince and Pierce was interesting. He, George, seemed preoccupied with something... Amal was all eyes for 007, or so it seemed...

That would make sense. I'd also guess that Rande's taste dominated the design of the place and George was happy to go along with it, because why not?

Katie, I think you're right. He seems to not really care much how his place is decorated as long as it's comfortable. He even said (in the home tour he did for Charlie Rose) that the Studio City home wasn't decorated to his taste - but he was ok with it because Rande (who did the decorating) had such good taste.

I think the same thing happened in Cabo. It was just easier (and maybe safer?) to leave it in Rande's hands.

Both houses are beautiful.  Architectural Digest described George's house as darker and clubbier than Rande's which is said to be brighter.  More open to light.  In the magazine piece Cindy said it was the first modern house she thought she could live in.  Maybe George felt the same way.
