Changed from April 8 to May 13. Also the distributer has been changed to Sony instead of TriStar.

There's a bunch of films coming out in the same day:

This doesn't sound good. Postponing a release date usually means they're still working on finishing (or fixing) the film, but if they're changing distributors that could affect the release date, too.

Changing the distributor is more concerning. To me it says that there were disagreements - possibly disappointments? - with the original distributors. Maybe they didn't like the way the film was turning out and didn't want to put too much money behind publicizing it.

I wish Way2Old was posting. She'd probably know.

Lizzy don't worry you missed the point here.
This film used to be under the sub-company of Sony-aka Tri-Star, which is less powerful than the big studio Sony.
The last films via Tri-Star, especially The Walk tanked in a miserable way.
Their marketing for films must be questionable.
BTW, when Tri-Star acquired this project in the first place, they were still under the lead of Tom Rothman, who later became the Chairman of Sony Studious.
Thus, IMO, that it's Rothman who values the film seriously enough to promote it to his hands, showing Sony's confidence on Money Monster.
May has been a hotter month than April in boxoffice obviously.

Sevens, I hope you're right but I still have my doubts. From the beginning it seemed to me to be a poor man's remake of "Broadcast News" - which was brilliant. Any remake would compare badly. I hope I'm wrong.

Post by Sevens Sat 05 Dec 2015, 19:06

Sorry Lizzy I've never seen "Broadcast News" but found that was a comedy/romance? which is totally different from Money Monster, a drama/thriller about finance and stocks.
If you have doubts,  did you read the script review I posted days ago? That should give you some clues about its plot. it's said it's more like "Network" and "Dog Day Afternoon", "Inside Man" which are all great films. and the main plot doesn't happen in the studio. an original script, non-remake.
actually I've got the script yet haven't start reading...not sure if I want to be spoiled before even seeing the movie.

Embarassed Shame on me! I meant "Network", not "Broadcast News" (although that was a good movie, too).

I haven't had the time to read the script, but I want to as soon as possible. I don't think it will spoil the movie - especially if this isn't the final draft and there have been revisions.

"Money Monster" moves to 13th May, 2016 Empty Re: "Money Monster" moves to 13th May, 2016

Post by Way2Old4Dis Sun 06 Dec 2015, 16:05

So...

A few people have asked via PM and e-mail about my insight on this. First of all, I'm flattered that anyone would think I had any worthy "insight," but when it comes down to it, your guess as to what this means is as good as mine.

But, I will tell you what I know.

I had heard some time ago that Money Monster was going through a heavy edit in post-production. Because no re-shoots were involved, I assume it was for things like pacing or maybe technical improvements. But, at the base of that would be that the studio didn't care for the cut turned in by the director.

That isn't necessarily bad. Lots of very good, award-winning movies have been "fixed in post."

But then comes the push in the release date. First, I thought it was a bit unusual for a $30M film to be held back a year after filming is completed. As a rule, people who invest in mid-budget ($20-40M) projects want a quick turnaround on their money, so those movies come out fairly quickly after completion of filming and post. So something was unusual from the start. Now that it's done but being pushed back, I think the producers (and remember that Smokehouse is one of them) are hedging their bets.

TriStar, also one of the producers, is a division of Sony. So the movie now has the parent company as the distributor instead of its smaller specialty division. Why? Could be any number of reasons, and probably a combination of them. Could just be an executive decision. Could be that the new cut is much better, and the studio wants to treat it like it knows it has a hit. Could be that they still have reservations, and they are moving to protect the stars, all of whom they want to continue to do business with (remember that George/Grant/Smokehouse have a deal with Sony, and they have to consider their future projects in the context of past ones), or they are moving for Sony to absorb a financial hit that TriStar can't afford. Could be a decision to change marketing direction, and Sony would rather oversee it and take its fee as distributor.

So then you look at the release dates. The April date was the same day The Boss is coming out, and it is tracking very well. The May date has Snowden and a few other lesser-known projects. So the thinking could be that it's better to risk being first or second among several films expected to do decent but not blockbuster business, rather than risk being a distant second in a two-horse race.

But again, I'm just speculating. I don't know. It could be just a matter of the number of screens available vs the number they want to get it on, and we're reading way too much into this.

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and are looking forward to your respective holidays, if any at all.

"Money Monster" moves to 13th May, 2016 Empty Re: "Money Monster" moves to 13th May, 2016

Post by Way2Old4Dis Sun 06 Dec 2015, 17:25

I forgot to add this:

In movie writing credits, if there is more than one writer, their names are separated by either "&" or "and," which do not mean the same thing. "&" means the writers worked together; "and" means it was a separate rewrite or revision, not done in collaboration with the previous draft(s).

This movie has three writers. The first two co-wrote it. The third comes after "and." Now, that may mean nothing. But usually, when a writer sells a script at the studio level, they are given, by contract, first crack at the rewrite or revision. So it looks like this movie had to have a clean-up guy come in and fix it to the studio's liking. Almost all scripts go through rewrites. But to me, the more "and" or combinations of "&" and "and" in the credits, the more issues the project has.

I almost never pay to see a movie with two or more "and" writers. They have to come to me.

And there you have your useless factoid for the day.

[Lizzy, I am enjoying the season. I love Thanksgiving, could take or leave Christmas, but my oldest granddaughter loves it, and the spirit is contagious.]

PP - He may be in LA but I don't think he's involved with the writing side of this film - at least not at this stage of the game. He may have made suggestions during filming, but IMDb lists 3 writers and (luckily?) none of them is George.

I always get nervous when there are so many people involved in creating the core of a project. It tends to prove the old saying, "Too many cooks spoil the broth".

It probably doesn't matter, though. If the film bombs they're going to blame George anyway. They won't say Jodie Foster can't direct, or the writers blew the script. They'll just say another George Clooney movie flopped. Mad

Great to hear from you again!

What is your view on the many apparently 'failed' films of the moment?

Can ALL of them really be that bad? Are there too many? Are folks only turning out for the really big names? And is the youth demographic more dominant than anything else?

Or is there something different at play here? Online included of course........

Yeah, but the common thread  with Monuments Men ( in the opinion of some- not being a typical Clooney hit ), Tomorrowland, Crisis and
( hopefully not a flop) Money Monster is George.  Unfortunately, he does seem to be on a bit of a roll to this regard.

PP- Agreed. And if anyone noticed, a lot of the press for "Hail, Caesar" calls it a Coen brothers/Clooney film - even though the cast is crammed with stars and the plot sounds more focused on Josh Brolin's part than George's. Guaranteed, if the movie isn't good the headlines will all be about Clooney's latest flop. Mad

IMO blame to George for Monuments Men is justified as he was in creative control. I read the book and a better book about the same subject (the Rape of Europa) and, again IMO, the tone of the whole movie as an old fashioned WW2 movie with broad comic elements and caper overtones was a mis-step.

The other movies can't be totally laid at his door step.  Especially Tomorrowland--he was one of the lead actors for gosh sake's, not the director.  I didn't see Our Brand, but I have to wonder if the choice of this movie was not out of sync with current film goers--even the ones that go to small independent movies.  Concept seemed dated and the inspiration was 10 years old.

Fava - I agree that George isn't infallible. I think he and Grant make interesting choices in the films they produce and the ones they write, but there is room for improvement.

I believe that when they are responsible for the major decisions in the production, or when George is the standout leading man, then the success or failure of the film should be laid at their feet.

My complaint, which I will shut up about after this, is that for some reason George seems to be held responsible for the fate of anything his name is associated with - no matter what his part in the production. Anything he's associated with in any way seems to end up "a George Clooney project" to the critics. IMO, not fair!

Lizzy, You are right, it's not fair.

I think some people still feel the big name star will draw people to the theaters and if they don't, the star is at fault because their name failed to draw the crowds.  Don't agree as I think there are not so many now who see everything a star does no matter what the content, reviews, etc.

My belief is there is also bit of "ageism" where George is concerned.  Because he is in his mid-50s, some see his romantic leading man/action movie/blockbuster days as over and any movie that does not do as well they attribute to him failing to be a box office draw.  I don't agree, but there you go.

I guess you're right. People like to categorize everything and everybody. And I think critics do so as well. So whenever an actor does something new the stereotyped thinking doesn't work anymore, and that's stressful and requires thinking...

Though I didn't really appreciate George's role in MM, I've almost always enjoyed the characters he has played.  Up In The  Air, The Descendants, Michael Clayton (especially), his Coen Brother roles, Syriana, The American and Three Kings are standouts for me.  So I'm really excited to see how he plays Lee Gates.

The standouts for me are GNGL and The Ides of March - in terms of 'All My Own Work'.

And yes, Donnamarie, your list is full of good things. And the Oceans films are great fun of course.

So to have MM and the produced 'Our Brand is Crisis' not doing so well, is something of a shock.....but in a way not surprising given the law of averages - but not what we expect!! A helluva lot to live up to - and in a changing climate of choices to watch film...........

True PAN.  And agree on your choices of his directorial efforts.  But then I would also want to include Confessions. But as far as his acting efforts those I listed are standouts to me.

I know George can't get it right all the time.  But this cluster of lackluster projects he's been involved with lately have obviously left some critics claiming that Clooney is a has been.  I resent it and it does make me worry a bit.  But I also know George just needs one successful movie to get it all back on track.  I also think George and other serious filmmakers have their work cut out for them to tell thoughtful stories that most moviegoers want to see.

I was reading a recent article about how the Steve Jobs movie bombed at the box office. Made about $18m. Despite glowing reviews by critics of the movie and especially Michael Fassbender's depiction of Jobs.

I think it's really difficult for serious stories about serious subjects to succeed in this age of lowbrow comedy, comic hero and action packed tentpole movies.

This fall I've seen The Martian which is a really good and optimistic piece of storytelling.  But for me Bridge of Spies (Spielberg film) and a small film Brooklyn were even better.  I would recommend all three.

"Money Monster" moves to 13th May, 2016 Empty Re: "Money Monster" moves to 13th May, 2016

Post by carolhathaway Wed 09 Dec 2015, 06:52

Donna,
I realized that I sometimes have to watch a movie a few times to really get the story. There are movies with a simple story that I catch when I watch it for the first time (like 'Inside Out' or a German teenie comedy which are designed for a big audience) but I quite often have to re-watch a movie with a complex story. And there are always movies which are about American subjects and so it's just not easy to get into the story without all the background knowledge (like 'GNGL' because I hardly know anything about the McCarthy era or 'IOM' because we elect our president / presidential candidate differently). But usually I inform myself before re-watching a movie, and then I understand much better what it is about.
Maybe my attention span ( do you say so?) is lower than it used to be but I think that years ago I just consumed movies and didn't think about it a lot so it didn't really bother me when I didn't understand all about it. And maybe others are so used to these easy-going movies and just don't want to think about them that they critizise every movie with a complex story as 'bad' or 'boring'.
For me George's role in 'Monuments Men' wasn't that bad, and the movie wasn't either but I grew up with this story, my father talked a lot about these men and their mission. And he actually really liked the movie.

I also think that - because of the multiple use of medias - we aren't as focussed on one issue at a time as we used to be. When I watch a movie now on TV or DVD now I also have my tablet there to check certain facts about it ('I've seen this actor before. Where?' or 'I just got a mail. Oh, there's a new message on COH. What is it about?) that I'm not always concentrating on the movie as much as I used to do. I've been to a pop concert in a church recently which was terrific, and next to me sat a man who was onstantly  reading or writing onnhis cell phone. He drove me mad!
But should they only do simple movies because we don't concentrate any more? That would be really bad, I think. Because there are important stories to be told. And there's always an audience for it. Should they miss out?

Yep carolh.  I agree.  The general population these days want instant gratification.  Especially when being entertained.  If you are a director making a movie that doesn't involve a significant amount of action but involves thoughtful concentration to a storyline well .... good luck with that.  You have to be talented enough to find a way to keep the audience engaged.  Of course this is essential to any well made movie but it's imperative in our current culture.

I may be simplifying the current state of movie watching but it does exist in a significant way.  And yes competing medias are a big distraction.

Older audiences in general appreciate well written and intricate storytelling.  IMO.  They grew up watching those kind of movies.

"Money Monster" moves to 13th May, 2016 Empty Re: "Money Monster" moves to 13th May, 2016

I think GNGL and IOM were the two really successfully written projects for Grant and George. The other films where they were responsible for the script weren't as tight or well paced. For me there was often a lack of dramatic tension.

I think if they're going to produce, write, direct and (for George) act in future projects they need to analyze what isn't working for them and fix it. IMO, it's the writing. The directing and acting are just fine.

(Sorry, Katie. Way off topic! Embarassed )

We did get off topic didn't we.  Sorry.

Last thought. Agree Lizzy that sometimes the writing and direction are not as tight as it should be.  Tension lacking .. sometimes.  But what the hell do I know.  Just my amateur opinion.  George knows what he's doing.  He knows where he screws up and where he succeeds tho sometimes after the fact.  Making a quality movie and making a movie that succeeds at the box office are often at odds with each other.  As long as George is true to himself that's what's most important.

Done.  Sorry. Sorry.

I'll just add that a chief producer on any project always has a say in the drafts of the screenplay and in how the director shoots the project. That's part of the producers' responsibilities. So even when George and Grant don't write and/or direct, they have a hand in both.

It's only when George is just a hired gun actor (like 'Tomorrowland' and 'Hail, Caesar!') that he's really not responsible for the entirety of the film.

When Jodi Foster directed 'The Beaver,' she lost a lot of the nuanced humor in the script, I thought. She has a very pensive directorial style, for lack of a more descriptive word.(Of course, 'The Beaver' was hampered by the sensationalism of Mel Gibson, so there's that.) But my point is that I think there's a possibility that a level of intensity in the script for 'Money Monster' may have been missed, which wouldn't be George's 'fault'... except that he was there as the lead actor with a respected perspective, and as a producer.

Thanks Way2. Is Smokehouse considered a "chief producer" of 'Money Monster'?  Could George have weighed in heavily on the direction of the film?

Smokehouse, TriStar, and the new company that came up with the financing are the screen-credited producers. I don't know if they're "Smokehouse presents" or "... in association with Smokehouse..." but they are chief producers.

Yeah, everyone --including me!--wants instant gratification these days.  I am not sure that it means that younger people or people in general are not interested in a good story--they may not be looking to major motion pictures for this type of experience as was true when I was growing up and as a young adult.  My daughter is a freshman in college and is in a film and television program.  She loves movies, but she really  loves episodic TV and that is what she would like to work in.  When I asked her why she prefers that, she said that there is so much more that can be done with character development and complex story lines and that is why she prefers it.  Of course, she does not actually watch anything on a television or according to a tv schedule --only on her laptop whenever it is convenient for her. She is actually very selective about what she watches (no reality tv except Project Runway); I guess there are so many choices nowadays you don't have to put up with anything you don't want to.  Maybe folks are binge watching House of Cards, True Detective or Downtown Abbey in the comfort of their owns homes instead of going to the theater.
